The UK and transphobia
I think that's exactly why, the same legislation was introduced in Germany last year for example- they (the Tories) need to keep these culture wars alive to help them politically keep together their voter coalition, and they don't care about who it ultimately harms. It'll be a tetchy #Tyskysour tonight...

Electronic Track of the Week

Shameful. Oh well, the United Kingdom is over. Rise Scotland rise. I'm too angry to formulate a proper response rn.

⬛ SEMI-FINALS ⬛
Nosaj Thing <3 I'd agree with what Rob/Silas/Bré said about sampling- it can be a difficult one to call and on marginal ones you likely won't end up pleasing everyone unfortunately. Personally I think there is a meaningful difference between a sample that uses the melody and/or lyrical theme as a crutch, and a sample that changes or strengthens the original message/themes and transforms it into a very separate work. I think Nosaj Thing easily falls into the latter category, it just samples the drum loop from “Teardrop” - which itself is from “Sometimes I Cry” and that forms a very subtle part of “Blue Hour” - everything else: melody/structure/lyrics is unique. Some artists get a lot of unfair criticism for sampling, largely based on the worst cases, but it's really not easy to get right at all - but done well and the results can be amazing and give a great insight into that artists influences, and also help younger people discover (and just in general highlight forgotten/unknown) great tracks that they may otherwise not know of. Just dig into the samples used for any Prodigy single! Anyway, looking forward to checking the rest out later- busy week at work so it may be Friday before I can have a good listen through. That was the first single I've heard from her and I really enjoyed it, so hyped to hear your entry!

k👠th EOY 2022
Oops at the foot shooting there! 😔 Just listening to the recap now, a really strong EOY with a good mix of lesser known as well as popular dance tracks from the year. “Chaos Energy” remains as immense as the first time that I heard it and “Meli (II)” continues to evoke memories of the summer and that amazing Glasto set the duo did. Ofc Eliza was the most likely (and deserving) to be your #1, I'm so happy for her that she managed to get that huge success given the hard work and effort she has put it, you can definitely tell that it meant such a huge amount to her. It was heartening to see the rest of the community (for e.g. salute) really rallying behind both Eliza and Interplanetary Criminal as it went up the chart. Such a moment, especially as female DJ representation within dance music is worse than in the music industry in general, which is already poor. I'm hopeful that this will be an inspirational moment for all those up&coming young female DJs and producers to see that they can make it and make it big on their own terms. PS- Found this video from a couple of years ago that I thought you may enjoy.. uGmIzCAFfLg

Have your politics shifted?
There is definitely a lot of anger and increasing levels of animosity out there- we see that being exploited and used to generate revenue on social media. I think (and I am only really speaking for myself here) that there is an element of nihilism in Millennials now, and maybe partly in Gen Z too? When you think about what has happened since many of us entered the jobs market in 2008, e.g. a near continuous decline in living standards/public services and stagnation in wages as well as worsening wealth inequality and job security, endless corruption and injustice that goes unpunished, and disenfranchisement from near continuous defeats of progressive politics, then it's really not that surprising. Everything is getting worse over time, and every voice or movement that tries to change things for the better is comprehensively defeated and destroyed. So, what's the point?

Chez EOY 2022
“There’d Better Be a Mirrorball” is very Richard Hawley, which was funnily enough who they beat to the Mercury music prize in 2006 - with Alex Turner proclaiming 'Someone call 999! Richard Hawley's been robbed!'. I've really grown into the album over time, my Dad lent it me after he played it when he visited last autumn. I wasn't initially that impressed when it was first released but like you say it begins to reveal itself upon repeated listens. “Wall of Sleep” is a great choice too, one of my favourites of the year but only the 3rd best Daniel Avery track behind the SHERELLE inspired “Higher” and the incredible “Chaos Energy” (my #4 of 2022). Not sure if you've heard the album in full at all but it hits upon most of the great touchstones of dance music in the 1990s, the title track is very reminiscent of 92-94 Aphex Twin and the aforementioned “Chaos Energy” gives me a Future Sound of London “Papua New Guinea” vibe. Really enjoyed “Golden Air”- that was a great discovery from Nuggets (among many others). : )

Jade's Top 40 | #302 (05.01.23)
Hi Jade, Happy New Year to you, hope 2023 is off to a good start for you and that you had a great Christmas break. First off- That Top 2 is incredible! *.* I'm completely obsessed with Yves Tumor, and “God Is A Circle” is another fantastic post-punk, dark, industrial sounding single, quite the grower as I wasn't massive on it at first but it builds and is now one of my favourite singles of theirs. My friend saw them play Primavera Sound last summer and said that they were great fun, def hyped to hear a new album (fingers crossed it's coming..) The other really hit me over Christmas too and is climbing my chart fast, I've not been overly massive on any Iglooghost tracks before - “Clear Tamei” is apparently the one I enjoyed the most at the time (peaking at 13)- but this is sounding so SO good. I also am following Iglooghost on last.fm .. S/o also to the new entries from Special Interest and I. JORDAN which I have also been enjoying a lot, and to “Voyage en Europe (TDJ Remix)” which sadly leaves your chart this week - the video to the original track by Roland Cristal is iconic. Thanks also for sending Heartworms to Nuggets, that's one of my favourite discoveries from 2022.

⬛ THE WHITE ROOM ⬛
Sounds like quite a cheap unit, was it sourced from Altyr Muunilinst? Much hype for a Bal hosted contest, even if I thought it was going to be a KLF theme when I first saw the 151 thread. *.*

k👠th chart - 6 Jan 2023
Hey Kath, hope you've had a good start to the year. Incredible to see PinkPantheress' commanding the entire Top 3 and “Boy’s A Liar” at #1. Great also to see Pretty Girl in the Top 5, I rly enjoyed her Boiler Room set- “Only If U” (the X Club/Kathaldazia collab) has been a great winter club anthem for me and I'll def be charting “Nice To See You” very soon, her only other major hit so far for me was “Arc” in summer '21. I'm also quite enjoying the new Villager single that dropped over Christmas, I saw that they had a track played in salute's recent Boiler Room set. However my favourite entry of the week has to be: They have been absolutely killing it recently, “God Is a Circle” is so SO good. I love the video too, it's Hemingway directing like it was for “Secrecy Is Incredibly Important To The Both Of Them”. <3 What we need now tho, is an album!

k👠th EOY 2022
Rather than pasting all the songs I love (which is pretty much all of them), I'll try and highlight some of my ABSOLUTE. faves from this amazing chart: 71. BABii feat. Iglooghost - LiiTE Apols for not posting much in her thread about this but I have been loving pretty much everything she has released so far. The whole 2-step/UKG soundscape on SCREAMER and production is absolutely top tier. Hugely underrated IMO. Even in BJSC where she flopped in the final for Cumulonimbia - the home of flops. 68. TSHA feat. Mafro - Giving Up TSHA is quite hit and miss with me but this was a definite hit, got to #8 for me and is now one of three T10 hits for her, the biggest though td remains “Sister” which got to #6 in September 2020 and #57 in my 2020 EOY. 50. KH - Looking at Your Pager BANGER. This was basically my song of the summer- loved it so much I bought the 12" vinyl immediately, and the highlight was hearing it closing the amazing set that Kieran played at Glastonbury with his mum raving in the front row- my number 7 of 2022. : ) 37. I. JORDAN - Always Been This took a while to work its way into my affections but after 6Music Playlisted it I was hooked- they've had bigger hits in previous years but this did go T10. Biggest hit to-date remains “For You” which got to #1 in the summer of 2020. The re-brand has had zero impact on the quality of output so far, hyped to hear more. 27. Caroline Polachek - Billions My number 3 of the year, spending 3 weeks at #1. Hooked from the first listen, really looking forward to the album in February. 21. Shygirl - Cleo I love everything about Shygirl, she comes across so well in every interview I've seen, her asthetic and vibe are always completely on-point and her new album this year was a captivating listen. Great for a night drive. My Christmas number 1 for 2021. 13. HAAi & Jon Hopkins - Baby, We're Ascending HAAi was the most successful artist on my chart this year- everything from “The Sun Made For A Soft Landing” to her collab. with Daniel Avery. All fantastic. Can't decide whether it'll be “B.O.T.A.” or “Chaos Energy” at #1 but both will be amazing choices (or might it be something else??)

As it's you... Of course. A monthly album club with a joint listening sesh sounds like a fantastic idea, similar to the listening thing that Tim Burgess did during the pandemic. Here's how it was made as well. Rk8MkRKj52Q

RabbitFurCoat's Top 100 Acts; 2003-2022
Sant(o/i)gold is great, I became so obsessed in '08 that I bought every single from that first era, even the flop ones that I wasn't as in to (well they were all flops I guess) like “Say Aha” and “Lights Out”.. this was in the golden era of ChCMedia ofc where I was a member of the Roulette Dares!! Great that she's still going even today, I heard a new track of hers on 6Music today which sounded fairly decent. From the self-titled debut away from the singles I really liked “I'm A Lady”, think that would have made a great fourth single. “Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)” is another banger from that time which I bought on CD single too. Only peaked at 3 for me. It got stuck behind “With Every Heartbeat” and “Fluorescent Adolescent” which were two of the biggest songs for me in 2007 so I guess it got hammered by very bad timing.. it actually was #20 in my EOY for '07 (CR: 39-22-07-03-03-03-05-07-09-18-24-28-33-42-49 (15 weeks)) Will enjoy following this as a trip down memory lane : )

January Album of the Month - dandy*
I absolutely love “Song Of Life” - it was No.93 in my Top 100 singles of the 1990s that I broadcast on New Year's Day. I uploaded my CD single cut online as I can't find it anywhere: I have the extended version (8:45) and two other versions called 'Fanfare of Life' and 'Release The Dub'. Spotify need to get them up ! Peaked at 59 in December 1992. <3 This sounds like a great idea to me, good to rediscover some classics or even highlight some undiscovered/forgotten albums. I will make time to give it a listen in full over the next week.

Chez EOY 2022
Ooh great to see another 6Music convert. I've been getting away with putting it on in the office since at least 2015. It only occasionally gets switched over for PopMaster. Anyway, that last five are particularly strong. Great to see “Widow” and “B.O.T.A (Baddest of Them All)” appear earlier in your T40 - two big hits for me also this year, would def recommend seeing WMC live if you get the chance! Can't believe you've not heard from them before, get “Valleys” on your playlist immediately!! (my #1 of 2020) I've also enjoyed “Happy New Year”, though my favourite from Let's Eat Grandma this year was “Levitation” - such a joyful record. : )
