You generally don’t pay songwriters, they almost always do writing sessions on spec, however big they are. It’s all about taking a gamble in the hope you end up with a cut on a hit song. Big producers however do charge huge day rates.

Mama is #2 on The Pop List and it’s on Today’s Top Hits. And it’s only seven places behind Baby on Hot Hits. Baby has never been on the previous two playlists. I still don’t know the reasons behind it but I do feel bad for Marina.

I still think Baby will go Top 20 after Royal Variety and Top 10 in January. It's just a question of whether radio gets tired of it just as it's starting to pick up on Spotify.

In terms of streaming numbers, Baby has grown very healthily. Today is it’s best day outside release day (and possibly album release day, can’t remember). I’m now confident Marina is getting her first Top 10 in January. Plus I reckon official Top 20 following Royal Variety next week.

Is Baby actually climbing, or is that just the missing data?

Clean Bandit performed Baby on the Royal Variety show and it's being broadcast a week today, 11th Dec. Hopefully that will give it a boost? But otherwise yeah, January peak!

Baby has been moved up a bit for the second time in the past few days. It's not much, but I'll take it!

Mama had 850,000 global streams yesterday. It’s going to have a good debut.

I am so interested to see if this manages to break through in any countries other than the UK. It's not doing well on Spotify anywhere yet, but then a lot of countries are still heavily streaming Solo. It's doing really well on radio airplay in lots of places... would be really interesting if it managed to break through in the US... the one chart that includes radio airplay. Any thoughts?

The weird thing re the Baby radio / streaming debate is it’s been No.1 on Shazam for most of the past two weeks. So you’d think it’s a sign that people were liking what they were hearing and wanting to stream.

Question - Solo is currently Top 100 in about 25 countries on Spotify. How well was it doing internationally after a few weeks? Just wondering if Baby's relative lack of traction on Spotify worldwide is a sign of the song not connecting, or if it's totally normal at this stage. You'd *think* this has international hit potential written all over it!

It's definitely not hitting the public in a big way! But feels like the decision not to promote on playlists like I Miss You has only added to that.

I’m waiting one more week to see if Baby gets Radio 1 A List and playlist support for album release week. Otherwise I really think it’s someone at Spotify or even at the label with anti-Marina bias.

Baby is definitely not looking great, but there’s still a chance with all the album promo in a week’s time, Royal Variety performance and let’s see what the label can do with Spotify playlist support. Haven’t quite given up yet!

Can anyone with more knowledge of the Shazam charts than me tell me how promising an indicator it is that Baby has been #1 on Shazam for the past four days. Does it usually signify that a song is going to get a decent official chart placing? Or can it not always translate over?

Where is Baby?

I reckon that Shazam result plus the fact that it's the lead single for an album stuffed with hit singles, and is about to get a major label push, means it's looking pretty good right now.
