The UK Singles Chart, Four Years Ago
I really liked Mad World at the time because of Donnie Darko- but, in retrorespect, the Gary Jules version of Mad World wasn't very good really. But it did stop the Darkness getting to number one, which is very good indeed. I think the best track on that chart by far is Too Lost In You by Sugababes.

UK top 20 6 years ago
My favourite from there is Feeder- Just A Day. Brilliant track, still play it today. But I also like the songs by Kate Winslet, S Club 7 (it is a decent pop song), PPK, Kosheen and, surprisingly, Dannii Minogue. Worst for me are the songs by Hear'Say, Ian Van Dahl, Stereophonics, Steps, The Tweenies, that awful Hermes House Bands cover- and Cliff Richard. That medley of Somewhere Over The Rainbow and What A Wonderful World he did isn't even original itself. It's a cover of a much better version by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole that he did in 1993. The rest are all quite average I think.

Teacher charged over teddy row named Muhammad
It is ridiculous that all that erupted over naming a teddy bear whichever way you look at it. By the sounds of it there may be more to all this than this than meets the eye. I think there have been good points made that this teacher and this issue has just been used as a political pawn. Of course it could just be as silly as it looks.

School nativity plays under threat
I live in a town with quite a large Muslim population, and I've never experienced any objection whatsoever from Muslims about Christmas. Quite the opposite, Asian taxi drivers for example often wish people a Merry Christmas. It does seem to be overly sensitive middle class white people responsible for all this "PC" sort of thing- which in the end does nothing but cause more trouble.

Skunk Anansie
Yeah, I loved them. One of my favourite bands.

Judgement proves why Human Rights Act must be axed
I love how papers try and mislead people so much. I really don't understand why this judgement "proves" the Human Rights Act must be axed. Then again the Sunday Express is one of the reactionary papers.

Tutankhamuns face unveiled to the world
I remember hearing a lot about Tutankhamun in school, so I was interested in this.

Heather Mills's real enemy is staring at her in the mirror
I agree with the original post- Heather Mills is her own worst enemy. The way she's been carrying on in the last few weeks won't have done her any favours whatsoever. It should have been obvious the media would crucify her after those outbursts, so she was at least fairly stupid to not realise that. Either that or she just likes all the attention whether its positive or negative. She is a gold digger as well. Paul McCartney isn't innocent in that- unless he is incredibly naive. He must have been very pleased with himself that he could pull a much younger woman, an ex model no less, and he must have known that she wouldn't give him the time of day if he wasn't as wealthy as he is. It's always happened. He knew, or should have known, what he was letting himself in for. But that doesn't mean that Heather Mills deserves sympathy.

Byeeeee JK & Joel
I neither love or hate her. I'm kind of indifferent to her. I've always been surprised she seems to generate such strong opinions from people though. JK and Joel were rubbish, so I'm glad they're gone. I thought Wes wasn't too bad actually. I always thought he was similar to Scott Mills.

The Billboard Hot 100 - October 13
I suppose Britney's proved there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Radio 1 chart show news
I agree with you. As dull as Fearne and Reggie are, Tim Kash was a far worse presenter, and as the executive producer Andi Peters will have had more effect of what went on with the show than any of the presenters would have.

Reverend and the Makers // State Of Things
I liked it. I will definitely get this album. Heavyweight Champion Of The World was great.

Big Brother 8 - Discussion Thread
They might not need that huge a cull. The past few series of Big Brother/Celebrity Big Brother have had a final six, and the Twins now count as one housemate, so that means there are nine left. So they can get away with only getting rid of three before the final week. I wonder if they'll have a "all housemates up for eviction" twist within the next two weeks with a double eviction? If so, that would hopefully take out Grotbags Carole and her pet lizard Ziggy. I can't believe I used to like Carole. Ziggy has been consistently awful though. I hope Gerry goes soon as well, he gets more irritating by the day.

Big Brother 8 - Discussion Thread
I agree completely. Of the ones nominated, I want the simpering wet lettuce that is Kara-Louise to go. She's dull and her reaction to the other housemates nominating her was pathetic. All they said about was that she is boring. Jonty managed to laugh off what was said about him and Amy took it all quite well considering what was said about her.

Comedians who think they can sing
Just remembered one of the crappest of all: Richard Blackwood. A rubbish comedian and an even worse pop star, he somehow manged to get to number 3 in 2000 with 'Mama Who Da Man' and had a couple of other hits as well.

Radio & TV presenters
Terry Wogan had a single out once. 'The Floral Dance', getting to number 21 in 1978. Denise Van Outen dueted with Johnny Vaughn for charity once, singing a cover of the Kylie/Jason track 'Especially For You'. It reached number 3 in 1998. Johnny Vaughn's voice was awful. To be fair, Denise Van Outen wasn't too bad. I think she was in musicals and stuff before she was a TV presenter. She also dueted with Andy Williams on a new version of his song 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' which got to number 23 in 2002. Ant and Dec when they were known as PJ and Duncan.

Actors who believe they can sing
Kate Winslet got to number 6 with 'What If' in Christmas 2001. She had a pretty decent voice actually. Russel Crowe has a band called 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. Quite a lot of soap actors have tried to make albums or singles. One of the most bizarre was Coronation Street actor Matthew Marsden dueting with Destiny's Child for 'She's Gone'. Bill Tarmey (Jack Duckworth) has released a few albums apparently, I seem to remember them being advertised on TV a lot about 10 years ago. I could be wrong, but I think the guy who played Curly Watts in Coronation Street released an album as well. Will Mellor, somewhere between him being in Hollyoaks and being in Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps got to number 5 with 'When I Need You' in 1998. Oh, and Sally Lindsay who played Shelly in Coronation Street has technically had a number one single, as she was in St. Winifrid's School Choir.

Comedians who think they can sing
Tracey Ullman had a few hit songs in the '80s didn't she? One of them was a cover of Kirsty MacColl's 'They Don't Know'. It was never released, but Jennifer Saunders sang 'Holding Out For A Hero' while playing the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2. Peter Kay, sort of. Well, to be fair I don't think he thinks he can sing, and he didn't actually sing on 'Amarillo' and he and Matt Lucas were both playing characters when 'singing' '500 Miles'. Actually are novelty comedy records included in this thread or is it just those who have made 'serious' attempts? Because if not, that could include Harry Enfield as Loadsamoney and that awful dance track he did for Kevin And Perry Go Large. Plus Cat from Red Dwarf had a top 20 hit with 'Tongue Tied'.

Big Brother 8 - Discussion Thread
They were horrible to Amy when she went in the house, and for no good reason. All the others had a say in which housemates to swap, and it looked like Liam and Ziggy were the ones taking charge of it. Amy was just the scapegoat. Gerry is a hypocrite as well. He boasted about sleeping with 3000 people or whatever and said he shouldn't be judged for it, so he has no business calling anyone a "slag" really. That usually happens though. The quieter housemates come out of their shells a bit when the loudmouths have been evicted.

Big Brother 8 - Discussion Thread
I have to agree, I enjoyed the talent show and thought we should have been shown more of it rather than a show full of Chanelle's pathetic tantrums. I've also liked the Big Brother TV task this week, it's been good fun.

Artists taking credit for other's songs
Some of you may remember that there was talk of a film being made about 'Sk8ter Boi'. Thankfully it seems like it's stuck in development hell for eternity, but around the time they were talking about it being made Avril Lavigne was moaning that she didn't have any say in it... and her 'co-writers', the British songwriter team called The Matrix said in an interview they were working very closely on the film. Now if Avril Lavigne had written 'Sk8ter Boi' then surely she would have had some say in it. Anyway, I'm not at all surprised by this article. Most of the information in it has come out in some form before. They often try to make artists who are just singers look more credible by giving them an undue writing credit, and as the article says it has been going on since at least Elvis Presley. Like the article says, sometimes if an A-list act uses one of a writer's songs the act gets a writing credit as the song would be more likely to be a big hit if a well known act uses it. It also can work the other way round as well- sometimes someone who wrote a substansial amount of a song doesn't get a writing credit. For example Quincy Jones has claimed he did uncredited work on some of Michael Jackson's songs.
