  1. I don't live in London, so the only free paper I see much of is the Metro, which is fine to read to pass the time on the bus or the train. Most people leave it on the bus or train when they get off for other people to read anyway, which means it all works out.

Have to agree with that. To be honest, I think she's one pop star who does 'deserve' her chart toppers. She is probably among the best of this whole pop-urban/pop-R&B thing that has been pretty dominant this decade. Even her worst number one, Deja Vu, isn't awful, it's just a lazy rehash of Crazy In Love, which like it or not will probably be remembered as one of the defining hits of the decade. She's certainly had a lot copy off her. Euro Music hates that particular genre if I remember rightly though.
  3. I thought it was Jane Fonda's. ;)
  4. Spacedust? That was one of the worst number one singles ever.
  5. Well, she did have that duet with George Michael if that counts. 'I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)' in 1987. That song is pretty c**p though.
  6. I agree with him, well done to Bedouin Soundclash for sidestepping all the daft chart rules, whether they intended to or not. I think the song itself is overrated though.
  7. Fave- Nerina Pallot Worst- David Hasselhoff

Obviously Don't Look Back In Anger. It's a classic! My top 5 number ones from that year are: 1) Oasis- Don't Look Back In Anger 2) Progidy- Firestarter 3) Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds - Three Lions 4) Deep Blue Something- Breakfast At Tiffany's 5) Spice Girls- 2 Become 1- reminds me of my first year of high school
  9. Bat Out Of Hell only reached number 9 on the UK album chart, but spent 474 weeks on the chart, still the second longest chart run ever on the UK album chart. (The longest ever at 477 weeks is Fleetwood Mac with Rumours). With albums how high it reaches isn't neccessarily important compared to how long it sticks around. Look at Steve Brookstein. A number one album that fell very quickly.

The Killers I suppose. It's grown on me now. Cascada on the other hand sounds old as the hills now.

Series 1 and 2 were great, both very funny. Series 3 was hit-and-miss, and 'A Bear's Tail' was awful. If it follows the pattern, this new series is going to be dire, and if the preview clips are anything to go by it truly will be. I think Barunka O'Shaughnessy is going to be in Bo! In The USA as Avid's wife. She might be OK in it, as she was quite good in 'Respectable'.
  12. Most of Jim Steinman's stuff will have been written for Meat Loaf I think. I heard that Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' was written for Meat Loaf but eventually went to Bonnie. Steinman and Meat Loaf fell out quite badly at some point. Meat Loaf did admit later on that the fame went to his head. Around the time that Meat Loaf's commercial success was waning, and a lot of the record company execs were telling Steinman he was the writer so he could write for other, more commercially successful, artists. I'm not too keen on Meat Loaf's new version to be honest. It's OK, but I think this is one of those songs that sounds better when a woman sings it. Some songs sound better when a man sings them. Or maybe it's because I heard Celine's version first. I think her's is the best so far. I thought the singer on the Pandora's Box version was a bit poor to be honest.
  13. That's the thing with the "won't stand the test of time" argument. It's just speculation. There is no way of knowing whether any of these will be remembered in 20 years until 20 years have passed.
  14. Lots of good stuff there. Strange how different the '90s looks from today. My pick of the bunch are: 3 3 8 IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO ME NOW Celine Dion 9 11 17 CALIFORNIA LOVE 2 Pac Featuring Dr. Dre 12 17 6 IF YOUR GIRL ONLY KNEW Aaliyah 13 12 27 GIVE ME ONE REASON Tracy Chapman 35 33 11 STUPID GIRL Garbage 57 55 8 DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER Oasis 59 65 6 READY TO GO Republica 60 57 15 TONIGHT TONIGHT Smashing Pumpkins I loved Republica- Ready To Go, but I had no idea it made the Billboard Hot 100. :o
  15. I think it's the "all-time favourite" bit that's annoyed some of the posters of, shall we say, more advanced years, on here. But I agree with your point, x-The_Royston_Poisoner-x, this list seems pretty acurate to what current students like to listen to at the moment, and as all these lists/polls are relative anyway, I don't think there's a huge problem with the selection on there. (On a side note, I think it's possible for 40 year olds to be students- though obviously most people do it when they're between 18-21.)

Sandi Thom the best? Really? Either way, I can't see her having a career as long as Kate Bush. I can't even see her having a career as long as Lily Allen.
  17. I like most of those tracks. Why do people get wound up over these lists though? Everyone will have forgotten about this list in a week's time, by which point some magazine or TV programme will have made up yet another "Top Ten Whatever Of All Time".
  18. They could go with a soap star as there are no obvious pop acts around right now. Like Shane Ritchie. Then again the lowest charting Children In Need single ever (that I know of) was by a couple of soap stars. Sid Owen and Patsy Palmer taking 'Better Believe It (Children In Need)' all the way up to number 60 in 1995.

Sandi Thom is just as much a novelty record as Chico of Hasselhoff's efforts if you ask me. I agree her's is much, much worse than the other two mentioned in this list though.
  20. Speed Of Sound got to number 8. I think increased download sales are what has made this shift in what does well in the US chart. Because of practically non-existant physical sales the chart was mostly airplay in the early half of this century, so that's why you got the same 6 hip hop/R&B songs in the top ten all year long. Since they increased downloads, the Hot 100 has seen more guitar bands, pop acts and even some dance do well in their chart. You no longer have to be urban or an American Idol contestant to do well on the Billboard Hot 100 now, which is obviously a good thing.
  21. I agree. Lavigne is not a great singer by any stretch of the imagination, but she's far better than Lily Allen. All Lilly does is whine in a mockney accent. I don't dislike Avril that much. She's a joke but at least she's a funny one.

Just wondering if anyone has seen Star Stories on Channel 4. I missed the first one (Posh & Becks), but the second (George Micheal) and third (Catherine Zeta Jones) episodes were both very funny. It's a little bit like Rock Profiles. A lot of the cast seem familiar but I can't quite put my finger on where I've seen them before.
  23. People generally remember the bad stuff more than the good stuff about anything though. I suppose it's human nature. People are more likely to report a bad experience than they are a good experience. Blair has done a lot of good things I think, but they will be overshadowed by the bad descions he made, which have had the biggest impact. The worst of those descions, siding with George Bush with the Iraq war will probably be what he is most remembered for.

BEST: Cord WORST: L'il Chris :puke2:
  25. I wouldn't say Jenny Don't Be Hasty is a masterpiece, but it is a very good track. A lot better than Last Request, which I thought was very dull. Sadly Jenny Don't Be Hasty won't do nearly as well.
