BJSC 187: Confirmations
I do get the simple practical concern that if a couple of songs are going to turn a 2 hour semi into 3 hours that’s a 50% larger investment of time than you might have set aside. At the same time I think it’s nicer if there doesn’t have to be a limit to what is sent. Separately I very much doubt anyone votes for the long songs just because they’re long, any more than someone would vote for a song just because it’s short.

My Eurovision rankings, country by country
5 Vukašin Brajíc - Thunder And Lightning (2010, 17th) A strong and gritty rock track that didn’t deserve to give them their lowest finish since 1997. He has a distinctive voice that I really like. 4 Hari Mata Hari - Lejla (2006, 3rd) Their best result ever and a powerful ballad. Its strength really lies in the rich accompaniment of traditional instruments. 3 Regina - Bistra Voda (2009, 9th) Quite an intense and very well sung number. I really enjoy the drum roll and the march-like feel to the slow chorus that builds to an exciting climax.

Biggest Duets
“I Got You Babe” jumped out at me as being missing, maybe due to a lack of 60s sales data.

Round 7 : End Of Year Survivor #148
Shania for me now. Actually surprised at The Klaxons cover doing that well: think it’s already outperformed the far superior “Golden Skans”.

Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
A couple of big pop classics competing with “When Doves Cry” here. “Time After Time” makes me feel all gooey inside so I’ve let that pip the Prince masterpiece. 9 Cyndi Lauper Time After Time This is such a beautiful and special ballad: the way the lyrics and melody weave together is just fabulous 9 Prince When Doves Cry His 1st big hit here and a US #1, this is one of his very best songs with great lyrics and instrumental elements 8 Tina Turner What's Love Got To Do With It Her 1st original hit of the decade and joint highest peaker, it's a fabulous and lyrically profound pop song 8 Billy Joel Goodnight Saigon/Leave A Tender Moment Alone "Goodnight Saigon" is an absolutely epic Vietnam war commentary: the other side is nice but more ordinary 7 Ultravox Lament A much smaller hit than "Dancing" but another great song with all their usual dramatic elements and power 7 Lloyd Cole And The Commotions Perfect Skin 1st hit for this Scottish group: it's a really interesting song with a stream of consciousness narrative style 6 The Bluebells Young At Heart The 1993 re-release will make this the 687th #1: it's a jolly country flavoured cover of a Bananarama song 6 Alison Moyet Love Resurrection Her 1st solo hit after the disbanding of Yazoo: it's more soulful rather than synth heavy but a nice record 5 Ollie And Jerry Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us 1st of a couple of hits for this US dance pop duo: it's a strong chorus but otherwise only mildly enjoyable 5 Thompson Twins Sister Of Mercy The #11 peak for this brings their run of huge success to an end, and it's a decent but unremarkable song 4 The Human League Life On Your Own This has some nice synth elements, but the chorus is a little repetitive and overall I don't get much from it 3 Shannon Sweet Somebody Her last Top 40: this one goes into the boring post disco lane and has none of the sparkle of her other hits 2 The Jacksons With Mick Jagger State Of Shock I can see why this collaboration was rejected from the "Thriller" album: a lyrically rather basic rock number 1 Gary Glitter Dance Me Up His 1st hit for a while, still very much in the glam rock style but with terrible lyrics and a raucous vocal style 1984 Group 13: #1439 14/07/1984 neil Hole In My Shoe 2 5-{2}-2-2-7-13-25-35-49-66->10 #1440 14/07/1984 Echo And The Bunnymen Seven Seas 16 26-17-{16}-26-31-43-63->7 #1441 14/07/1984 Phil Fearon And Galaxy Everybody's Laughing 10 28-15-12-{10}-11-16-26-31-40-54->10 #1442 07/07/1984 Shakatak Down On The Street 9 45-33-21-15-{9}-14-17-24-36-45-65->11 #1443 14/07/1984 Divine You Think You're A Man 16 38-26-17-{16}-18-22-31-38-50-67->10 #1444 30/06/1984 Mighty Wah! The Final : End Of Year Survivor #147
If it was “Better Off Alone” I’d vote for it, but I can’t really go against “Dog Days…” here.
-
RabbitFurCoat Ranks the 2012 #1s
“Hall Of Fame” is just average. I’m not a big Little Mix fan in general: I think that era of pop has aged quite quickly, but I do like “Wings” a fair bit. A really credible first single proper, and they had a few others I still think are good. “Diamonds” is probably my favourite out so far. I really enjoy Sia’s emotive writing and it’s a very strong performance.

Ultimate Survivor 14 : Round 8
Great final 3 but it’s “Chase The Sun” for me.

Club Bizarre 35: Instrumentals II [Voting]
I sense quite a lot of people didn’t vote before the deadline so AllStar probably felt in quite a difficult position as well. Nobody wants a massive bloodbath of non voting deductions. Not having a go at those who didn’t vote on time as it’s easily done, but he might have had a window of opportunity to do the results which then closed.

My Eurovision rankings, country by country
10 Fazia - Sva Bol Svijeta (1993, 16th) Their 1st entry and a pretty good effort with some nice folky elements, and I really enjoy the backing singers’ parts. 9 Laka - Pokušaj (2008, 10th) A rather confusing song and performance but it somehow works and has an enjoyable chaotic energy. 8 Dalal and Deen featuring Ana Rucner and Jala - Ljubav Je (2016, DNQ) The 11th place in the semi for this comeback entry was so unfortunate: they really threw everything at this duet with the cello melody, the impassioned singing and the frenetic rapped section. 7 Maya Sar - Korake Ti Znam (2012, 18th) A beautiful ballad that doesn’t have the interesting instrumental features of many of their other later entries but has a real understated quality. 6th Marija Šestić - Rijeka Bez Imena (Ријека без имена) (2007, 11th) This has a rather mystical feel to it with the dance-like accompaniment, as well as a brilliant lead vocal.

Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
“Relax” has the wow factor but I enjoy “Two Tribes” more with its war-cry spirit. However “White Lines” has to top the group for being such a defining track within its genre. 9 Grandmaster And Melle Mel White Lines (Don't Do It) 1st hit for this US rap group who had already broken up: a brilliant and absorbing piece of old school hip hop 9 Frankie Goes To Hollywood Two Tribes 536th #1: a wonderful whirlwind of a track about the Cold War, and the longest running #1 of the decade 8 Nik Kershaw I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me {1984} A re-release of an earlier flop giving him his biggest hit: an excellent song also protesting about the Cold War 8 The Pointer Sisters Jump (For My Love) An exciting and punchy electropop song that I think surpasses "Automatic", for which a cover will peak higher 7 Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark Talking Loud And Clear Not their most intense but a very dreamy and pretty song from them: I enjoy the jangly synths and oboe 7 Elvis Costello I Wanna Be Loved/Turning The Town Red A contrasting double A: both very good but I particularly enjoy the melancholy charm of "I Wanna Be Loved" 6 The Art Company Susanna Only hit for this Dutch group: it's an earworm and an enjoyable song, with nice vocals and a reggae beat 6 Scritti Politti Absolute An interesting and unusual track: I prefer "Wood Beez" but this has good moments and distinctive vocals 5 Michael Jackson Farewell My Summer Love The title track from an archived songs compilation: it's nice but it makes sense that it's from an earlier time 5 Nick Heyward Love All Day This is quite a pleasant and summery little song, though nothing too deep and something I would seek out 4 Bananarama Rough Justice A comedown in chart performance after 5 Top 10s, and I don't think the social commentary works so well 3 Change Change Of Heart Another post disco style hit 4 years after their last one: it seems a little out of date and is not very exciting 3 Lionel Richie Stuck On You After a run of surprisingly strong singles we're back to a boring and rather saccharine ballad from Lionel here 2 Rod Stewart Infatuation About a man obsessed with a new tenant in his building: I don't enjoy the shouty clunky style on this at all 1984 Group 12: #1425 23/06/1984 Ollie And Jerry Breakin'... Friday Chart Predictions
Oh I don’t tend to think of Bo Rhap as counting because its main run was only 9 weeks and the second was a special double A side much later, though from the songs chart point of view it does count.
