  1. Not being raised up in the slightest are Brian Kennedy and Peter Corry. Westlife’s cover of “You Raise Me Up” had just hit #1 when George Best died in November 2005, and this was performed at his funeral. It was then released as a single with proceeds going to the George Best Foundation, and peaked at #4 in January 2006. 10th: Brian Kennedy & Peter Corry - George Best - A Tribute 13/29 votes (45%)
  2. Being let go next are Five. This came in the midst of 3 #1 singles, 1 before and 2 after, but only reached #9 itself. The obsessive lyrics remind me of “Every Breath You Take”. The single had a slightly odd chart run, re-entering the Top 40 twice, presumably thanks to the bargain bucket. 7th: Five - Don’t Wanna Let You Go (12/27 votes (44%) 8th: The Script - We Cry 8/28 votes (29%) 9th: Nickelback - Rockstar 11/31 votes (35%) 10th: Orson - Bright Idea 8/27 votes (30%)
  3. I’d like to see a fresh winner so I’m going for “Mr Brightside” now.
  4. The BEPs have been stopped before they started. The single reached #11 in July 2004 and spent 8 weeks in the Top 40. The title was understandably changed from “Let’s Get Retarded” which had appeared on the “Elephunk” album. 4th: Black Eyed Peas - Let’s Get It Started 12/29 votes (41%) 5th: Aqua - Cartoon Heroes 14/36 votes (39%) 6th: Snow Patrol - Take Back The City 9/30 votes (30%) 7th: Tweet - Oops (Oh My!) 14/29 votes (48%) 8th: Tweenies - I Believe In Christmas 21/30 votes (70%) 9th: Blazin’ Squad - We Just Be Dreamin’ 14/31 votes (45%) 10th: Steve Brookstein - Against All Odds 11/25 votes (44%)
  5. How can a Eurovision song have been never performed at Eurovision? It never appeared in the final, a semifinal, a dress rehearsal or an afternoon preview. Wikipedia says “Iceland has been represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 37 times since its debut” and 2020 isn’t one of them. And surely if it’s open to interpretation, as the phrase “Eurovision song” without any clarification is, you’d give the benefit of the doubt in Pointless.
  6. Well I can’t complain at 6th place for 10 minutes of white noise! I thought this was one of the most horrifying things I’d ever heard when the distorted noise came in at 1:39 (hope it didn’t give anyone a hernia), but found it utterly mesmerising and beautiful at the same time! I’m glad quite a few people enjoyed it. Congrats Doctor B and thanks very much to you and seven for the 12s, and also Leww for the 10 plus hosting such a wonderful theme!

Xenomania were very wisely picked to write the girls’ single, having already written the #1 “Round Round”. The result was a 4 week #1 for the girls. However it was only the first of 20 consecutive Top 10 hits for them over nearly a decade, a record for a female group. This of course is a wonderful record with drum and bass and electropop influences. David Sneddon knocked this off #1, reminding us that reality TV producing good music would remain an exception rather than a rule.
  8. I have done hundreds of these reviews now across three threads and I’ve been very sparing with the 10s, giving no more than 3 per year. I certainly didn’t expect to ever have to give 2 10s within 1 group, and I’ve never given 4 songs 9 or above either. But “In The Air Tonight” is a big all time favourite and “Vienna” a huge highlight of the decade. “Fade To Grey” and “Rapture” aren’t far off either - there may never be another top section quite as strong as this. 10 Phil Collins In The Air Tonight His 1st solo hit and a stunning, horrifyingly stark, minimalistic and bitterly anguished track with an electrifying drum break 10 Ultravox Vienna 4 weeks at #2 for this smash: an incredible piece of piano assisted electropop which runs away from itself towards the end 9 Visage Fade To Grey 1st hit for this UK new wave band and another unapologetic synth pop masterpiece, which started off as an instrumental 9 Blondie Rapture A #5 following 3 chart toppers but no less marvellous; an incredibly sensual and dreamy track with a quirky rapped section 8 Dire Straits Romeo And Juliet A 2nd #8 for them: it twists the plot of the play but it's a great lyrical story about young love and a warm, well performed song 8 David Bowie Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) About a woman's descent into madness, this is a typically theatrical Bowie song with Cockney vocals and a menacing guitar 7 The Look I Am The Beat Only Top 40 for this UK band: this is catchy has a great raw uncomplicated energy to it and I enjoy the organ accompaniment 7 Barbra Streisand And Barry Gibb Guilty Another Bee Gees composed song from Barbra, this time done as a duet: a strong song that feels much bigger than its peak 6 Adam And The Ants Young Parisians Rather different from the energy of their big Burundi Beat hits, but an amusing track with fun lyrics and a mock French accent 6 Stevie Wonder I Ain't Gonna Stand For It Stevie impersonates a country and western singer with his accent here: an enjoyable song that crosses the soul-country divide 5 Yarbrough And Peoples Don't Stop The Music A US #1 and their only Top 40 sampled in Eve and Gwen Stefani's "Gangsta Lovin'"; I like that part but can take or leave the rest 5 Sad Cafe I'm In Love Again Their last hit: a nice track with a jazzy feel but doesn't have anything to make it stand out and I can see why it didn't do so well 4 John Lennon Woman 474th #1 and the 3rd and last of his immediate posthumous trio: this has some nice elements but feels a little languid to me 4 James Brown Rapp Payback (Where Iz Moses?) A track sampled in hundreds of songs including his "wooo!": as a stand alone track it's fine but more of a groove than a song 3 The Gap Band Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me) Their 3rd hit and another of these funk tracks that isn't very distinctive and passes by without really leaving much impression 3 Rod Stewart My Girl This was a relatively barren period for big hits for him, and this one is nicely performed but a little saccharine and plodding 1981 Group 2: #341 17/01/1981 Diana Ross It's My Turn 16 44-27-25-{16}-22-30-49-71->8 #342 17/01/1981 Heatwave Gangsters Of The Groove 19 59-29-{19}-20-23-27-35-59->8 #343 24/01/1981 Cliff Richard A Little In Love 15 33-17-{15}-16-20-28-39-66->8 #344 17/01/1981 Susan Fassbender Twilight Cafe 21 63-36-29-{21}-21-25-34-66->8 #345 24/01/1981 Madness The Return Of The Los Palmas Seven 7 38-18-14-10-{7}-7-10-18-27-41-71->11 #346 17/01/1981 Light Of The World I Shot The Sheriff 40 68-{40}-41-50-63->5 #347 24/01/1981 Spandau Ballet The Freeze 17 45-24-{17}-18-24-30-33-65->8 #348 31/01/1981 Rainbow I Surrender 3 28-12-5-4-{3}-4-12-22-38-63->10 #349 24/01/1981 XTC Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me) 16 54-34-28-19-{16}-18-23-36-61->9 24/01/1981 The Plastic Ono Band Give Peace A Chance {1981} 33 50-35-{33}-43-68->5 #350 24/01/1981 Honey Bane Turn Me On, Turn Me Off 37 64-{37}-37-47-61->5 #351 17/01/1981 Odyssey Hang Together 36 53-42-39-{36}-37-52-75->7 #352 31/01/1981 The Boomtown Rats The Elephant's Graveyard (Guilty) 26 40-{26}-27-32-42-46->6 #353 31/01/1981 Fred Wedlock The Oldest Swinger In Town 6 52-19-7-{6}-10-13-24-38-46-70->10 #354 07/02/1981 Joe Dolce Music Theatre Shaddap You Face 1 30-3-{1}-1-1-3-10-25-34-59->10 #355 31/01/1981 Slade We'll Bring The House Down 10 58-31-17-{10}-13-20-30-60-71->9 #356 31/01/1981 The Passions I'm In Love With A German Film Star 25 49-34-26-28-{25}-30-34-68->8

German DJ Thomas Brückner, who died last year, turned it into a techno track. The track became an unlikely UK #1. The follow up “Brainwashed (Call You) is also very good but only reached #43. If you listen to the Andrea Martin original song it’s a pleasant piece of soul but doesn’t exactly scream hit potential, and what he did with it is really quite remarkable. It’s quite a stark and bleak soundscape that really conveys the sense of being lonely and trapped. It still sounds just as good now, and it’s amazing that such a hard hitting dance track reached #1 in the midst of the 2003 soundscape.
  11. 6Michael Andrews and Gary Jules - Mad WorldScore: 8/10 27/12/2003 Michael Andrews Featuring Gary Jules Mad World 1 Chart run: {1}-1-1-2-4-5-12-12-23-28-31-43-57-66-70-58R(145)-67-26R(196)-53->19 Originally a 1982 hit for Tears For Fears, it only reached #3 but was the 12st biggest seller of the year. Film composer Michael Andrews composed this version for the soundtrack to the film “Donnie Darko”, and his friend Gary Jules provided the vocals. It emerged victorious in one of the most publicised Christmas #1 battles of the century (2002 and 2009 being other notable ones and also 2 of the only other years to actually have produced great Christmas chart toppers this century). From just 2 weeks on sale it became the 4th biggest seller of 2003, and also made the 2004 year end Top 40. A few years ago this would have been in my Top 3 here. Having known this version first I found the faster paced Tears For Fears version hard to get into at first. However after having delved more deeply into ‘80s music I now definitely prefer the original and this has slid just a little in my affections. It is nonetheless still a beautiful and haunting cover.
  12. About 60k off so not soon, but if the songs don’t tail off it should make it eventually.
  13. “Another Love” will surely be back soon if it keeps doing this well. I have “Daisies” closer to entering than “Victory Lap” - 326k vs 323k.

  16. I preferred the Brian Kennedy version to Westlife’s so spared that for one round and voted for Geraldine.
  17. Went for Esmée - quite bland
  18. Left crying are The Script. This was their debut single, and it peaked at #15 in May 2008 and spent 15 weeks in the Top 75. They would go on to have an even slower burning hit with “Breakeven” the following year, which spent 31 weeks in the Top 75 with a #21 peak.
  19. I do like “Let’s Get It Started” but the other 3 are stronger.

  22. 7Will Young - Leave Right NowScore: 8/10 06/12/2003 Will Young Leave Right Now Peak: 1 Chart run: {1}-1-2-6-5-6-10-12-14-22-17-22-24-34-44-60-64-61->18 This was the lead single from Will’s 2nd album “Friday’s Child”. On its release week this was actually being run close by the dreadful “I’m Your Man” cover by Shane Richie which was the “Children In Need” single. There were in fact distribution issues as the label had assumed Will’s popularity had waned enough for there not to be very much demand. In the end it managed a 6 figure sale and became the 5th biggest seller of the year despite only having been released in November. It felt like this was the moment where Will really became his own artist, and a number of really great singles followed this. This heartbreak ballad suits his voice very well and he sells it brilliantly.
