  2. Well it has to be Spiller again. “Who The Hell Are You” was way too similar to “Don’t Call Me Baby”. The 3rd single wasn’t bad though.
  3. “Goodies” is fine but it’s all a bit one note and plodding. “1, 2 Step” would have been a much better addition to the #1 canon. I’d have that lower. Think you’ve got “Get Right” about right! One of J Lo’s strongest hits I’d say, and I like that it is unapologetic in it’s “annoying” style. “Sometimes…” would be in my Top 10 certainly: it’s simple in production but there’s so much genuine emotion in the vocal that it really works.
  4. “Groovejet”!
  5. “Move” is #95 doing about 4k per week. It seemed incredibly stable in the early part of the year and then fell off a cliff.
  6. 12 To 12 373k WISL I think around 370k Where Is My Husband! 319k That may be all we’re expecting plus Christmas songs and possibly an oldie or two reappearing. I suspect we’ll lose: Mutt Burning Down Guess Move Cruel Summer The Giver Dakota

  9. Aus takes this one ❤️
  10. You’re missing out on some top notch Aussie humour. (Voted LeAnn nonetheless.)
  11. “Rise” very easily for me. A very tasteful sample, whereas the “Canon” sample is pretty naff for me.
  12. “Reach” by a mile
  13. A fantastic top 9 here: I feel quite harsh on Gary really. And I’ve decided to give the very rare triple 9. Soft Cell is an obvious huge highlight but the Uktravox and Soft Cell tracks are real titans of the synth-pop age too. 9 Soft Cell Tainted Love 484th #1: one of the all time great covers with a synth pop makeover and a crazed but commanding performance from Marc 9 Ultravox The Thin Wall A surprisingly low peak for their lead from a new album, but it's a superbly powerful and atmospheric track about nightmares 9 Genesis Abacab An epic synth track following the ABACAB structure: this feels like it goes on a journey and I love how the instrumentals develop 8 UB40 One In Ten After a run of more and more moribund double As this is their best hit to date: social commentary captured in a hypnotic hook 8 U2 Fire 1st hit for the Irish band who won't have big success for a bit: doesn't feel like they've found their later style yet but it's great 8 Siouxsie And The Banshees Arabian Nights Their usual dark, stark and brooding sound with intensifying, fearsome and biting vocals over a pulsating and menacing beat 7 Cliff Richard Wired For Sound The title track from his 24th studio album, this is very much top drawer Cliff and a lively track with some interesting rhythms 7 The Rolling Stones Start Me Up It's on the light hearted side but this is certainly one of their strongest later hits with a really infectious and joyous style to it 6 Gary Numan She's Got Claws A more jazzy sound than previous hits but the melody is quite like "Cars", and it's the usual jungle of synths and intense vocals 5 Aneka Japanese Boy 485th #1: I actually quite enjoy the clumsy cultural references, but beyond the catchy tune there isn't that much replay value 4 Modern Romance Everybody Salsa 1st hit for this UK band: this is quite a catchy piece of Latin style pop but it doesn't have a huge degree of musical substance 3 Tenpole Tudor Wunderbar Their 2nd and last Top 40 with a similar gung ho energy: it feels rather like a football chant and they mispronounce the title 3 Randy Crawford Rainy Night In Georgia A cover of a Brook Benton RnB song from a decade before: it's nicely sung but manages to be a rather boring overall package 2 The Nolans Chemistry Another attempt at sunshine pop from them but the chorus doesn't pop at all and ultimately it feels very pedestrian and flat 1 Enigma I Love Music Another all purpose medley of varying quality covers with no obvious unifying theme: we all love music but arguably this isn't it 1981 Group 15: 9 Soft Cell Tainted Love 484th #1: one of the all time great covers with a synth pop makeover and a crazed but commanding performance from Marc 9 Ultravox The Thin Wall A surprisingly low peak for their lead from a new album, but it's a superbly powerful and atmospheric track about nightmares 9 Genesis Abacab An epic synth track following the ABACAB structure: this feels like it goes on a journey and I love how the instrumentals develop 8 UB40 One In Ten After a run of more and more moribund double As this is their best hit to date: social commentary captured in a hypnotic hook 8 U2 Fire 1st hit for the Irish band who won't have big success for a bit: doesn't feel like they've found their later style yet but it's great 8 Siouxsie And The Banshees Arabian Nights Their usual dark, stark and brooding sound with intensifying, fearsome and biting vocals over a pulsating and menacing beat 7 Cliff Richard Wired For Sound The title track from his 24th studio album, this is very much top drawer Cliff and a lively track with some interesting rhythms 7 The Rolling Stones Start Me Up It's on the light hearted side but this is certainly one of their strongest later hits with a really infectious and joyous style to it 6 Gary Numan She's Got Claws A more jazzy sound than previous hits but the melody is quite like "Cars", and it's the usual jungle of synths and intense vocals 5 Aneka Japanese Boy 485th #1: I actually quite enjoy the clumsy cultural references, but beyond the catchy tune there isn't that much replay value 4 Modern Romance Everybody Salsa 1st hit for this UK band: this is quite a catchy piece of Latin style pop but it doesn't have a huge degree of musical substance 3 Tenpole Tudor Wunderbar Their 2nd and last Top 40 with a similar gung ho energy: it feels rather like a football chant and they mispronounce the title 3 Randy Crawford Rainy Night In Georgia A cover of a Brook Benton RnB song from a decade before: it's nicely sung but manages to be a rather boring overall package 2 The Nolans Chemistry Another attempt at sunshine pop from them but the chorus doesn't pop at all and ultimately it feels very pedestrian and flat 1 Enigma I Love Music Another all purpose medley of varying quality covers with no obvious unifying theme: we all love music but arguably this isn't it
  14. I missed the last poll oops! For what it’s worth: Duran Duran - Girls On Film Soft Cell - Tainted Love Ultravox - The Thin Wall Genesis - Abacab OMD - Souvenir
  15. I can’t say I’ve ever enjoyed anything by Crazy Frog but I guess in some ways there’s more creativity in that than in some of the others here. I get the impression most of Tony Christie’s stuff is very crony but “Amarillo” is a bop and a perfect choice for a fun charity single. “All About You” is a big favourite of mine. It’s absolutely beautifully done and has a soulfulness that not many noughties hits have. I think it might have made my Top 5 despite being dragged down a little by the other side.
  16. Going for Bryan Adams now though it’s quite a pleasant little tune really.
  17. McFly - fine but not memorable.
  18. Gah this group is pretty poor all round; but as Chez reminded me how much of an ordeal “Stickwitu” is I’m going with that.
  19. Hopefully not too hurt at being thrown at early in two different survivors in quick succession are The Kittens. “Love Doesn’t Have To Hurt” reached #4 in April 2003, the same week Avril’s “I’m With You” reached #7. It was the 6th of their run of 10 straight Top 10 hits that started with “Whole Again”. 8th: Atomic Kitten - Love Doesn’t Have To Hurt 9/28 votes (32%) 9th: Embrace - World At Your Feet 8/26 votes (31%) 10th: R Kelly - Happy People / U Saved Me 21/29 votes (72%)
  20. We gave it more love than most of Ronan’s efforts but Boyzone are out. This reached #5 in October 2008 and was their 1st hit together since 1999. They would have one further Top 10 in 2010 in the wake of Stephen’s passing. 5th: Boyzone - Love You Anyway 9/27 votes (33%) 6th: Lyte Funkie Ones - Girl On TV 12/29 votes (41%) 7th: Michael Bublé - Everything 10/27 votes (37%) 8th: Atomic Kitten - Ladies Night 10/31 votes (32%) 9th: Lil’ Bow Wow - Bow Wow (That’s My Name) 13/30 votes (43%) 10th: Lostprophets - Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast) 23/33 votes (70%)
  21. This was announced as the 1,000th #1 at the time, which seemed more than a little anticlimactic. I also prefer the bouncier “I Got Stung”, but acrisply aside from the one to come Elvis’ 18 #1s aren’t really his best songs anyway. The #2s are where it’s at with “Hound Dog”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “In The Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds”.
  22. I’m not sure if it will be “A Sky Full Of Stars”, “Dakota” or “Just Keep Watching” dropping out!
  23. It’s medley central but the big ‘80ths synth pop bands are really coming good, and Duran Duran are producing some of their best material of the decade. 8 Duran Duran Girls On Film 1st smash hit for them and one of their best loved hits about the dark side of the fashion industry: this is delightfully punchy 8 The Human League Love Action (I Believe In Love) Their 1st really big hit, doing so well on the strength of "The Sound Of The Crowd" which has even more bite, but this is great too 8 Kim Wilde Water On Glass/Boys "Boys" has a similar feel to "Kids In America": both tracks are great high octane pop hits, but this somehow missed the Top 10 7 Debbie Harry Backfired Her 1st solo hit which didn't do very well but it's a swag filled number with rapping and singing which showcases her versatility 7 Stevie Wonder Happy Birthday The 1st of 2 #2 hits with this title in quick succession: it's a lovely joyous track, albeit the chorus has been rather overplayed 6 Electric Light Orchestra Hold On Tight A rockabilly inspired hit from them that's very sweet and cosy, perhaps slightly verging on cheesy and not one of their finest 6 Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Hooked On Classics A medley but classical: this one works really nicely, showcases great pieces and is a breath of fresh air compared to the others 6 Bill Wyman (Si, Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star 1st solo hit for this Stones guitarist: this is very unusual and perplexing but I quite enjoy the Franglais lyrics and carefree style 5 Eddy Grant I Love You, Yes I Love You This only just made the Top 40 though he'll be back with a bang next time: it's not bad but the synth noises feel slightly cheap 4 Voggue Dancin' The Night Away Only hit for this Canadian disco duo: the track is quite nice but the vocal parts lack punch and it doesn't quite feel complete 3 Shakin' Stevens Green Door 483rd #1: a cover of a 1956 song which Frankie Vaughan took to #2: this isn't badly done but certainly doesn't feel necessary 2 Carl Carlton She's A Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked) Only hit for this US RnB singer who also covered "Everlasting Love": the lyrics are fairly poor plus the song isn't up to much 2 Lobo {NL} The Caribbean Disco Show A medley of reggae tracks: certainly not enjoyable but at least the theme makes some sense and the overall result is cohesive 1 Tight Fit Back To The 60s Producer Ken Gold enlisted session musicians to create this 15 minute '60s medley: some of the vocals are ropey and it's a slog 1 Startrax Startrax Club Disco An even longer medley seemingly ripping off the Stars on '45 idea with poorly recreated disco hit clips: no redeeming features 1980 Group 14: #520 01/08/1981 Tenpole Tudor Wunderbar 16 51-36-21-20-{16}-17-27-36-69->9 #521 01/08/1981 Siouxsie And The Banshees Arabian Nights 32 44-37-34-{32}-34-37-54->7 #522 08/08/1981 U2 Fire 35 39-39-36-{35}-39-49->6 #523 08/08/1981 Aneka Japanese Boy 1 60-19-4-{1}-2-3-6-13-21-34-49-62->12 #524 08/08/1981 UB40 One In Ten 7 54-23-16-10-{7}-9-12-26-33-50->10 #525 01/08/1981 Soft Cell Tainted Love 1 62-45-26-9-2-{1}-1-2-2-8-12-20-22-28-36-66-70R(8)-45-57-46-43-52-63-68-64-68-72R(19)-50-54-58-61R(130)-43-45-45-55-66->36 #526 08/08/1981 Enigma I Love Music 25 52-31-{25}-25-27-34-40->7 #527 08/08/1981 Randy Crawford Rainy Night In Georgia 18 69-40-30-22-20-{18}-21-31-36->9 #528 22/08/1981 Genesis Abacab 9 27-12-{9}-13-18-28-42-58->8 #529 15/08/1981 The Nolans Chemistry 15 57-29-26-{15}-20-26-34-54->8 #530 22/08/1981 Ultravox The Thin Wall 14 37-19-{14}-14-15-25-40-59->8 #531 15/08/1981 Modern Romance Everybody Salsa 12 71-38-29-16-{12}-14-23-27-42-68->10 #532 29/08/1981 Gary Numan She's Got Claws 6 15-{6}-10-16-33-39->6 #533 29/08/1981 Cliff Richard Wired For Sound 4 27-11-{4}-5-6-14-20-37-45->9 #534 29/08/1981 The Rolling Stones Start Me Up 7 28-13-{7}-9-16-23-37-53-74->9
  24. I wonder if “Golden” or “Ophelia” will be #1 given how the Demon Hunters tracks have been fading this week!
