  1. A poll could be worth doing. There was a 2021 ABBA rate so maybe too soon to do another. I’d be really interested in the Stones myself but I’m guessing Blondie would get more participants, as most Buzzjackers are millennials who tend to be not that interested in stuff from before they were born.

As for selection criteria, it’s good to make it objective but at the same time you want to make sure the artist’s work is very well represented. One possibility which I considered for The Beatles is singles plus the X most streamed non singles on Spotify.

  2. Thanks for doing this Julian. Really enjoyed the countdown and a worthy winner regardless of my preferences.

Anyone for the Rolling Stones next?

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks to you and others for adding interesting commentaries.

I need a break from running these things but I would certainly participate in a Stones one with interest.

  3. Here is Version 2 with chartjack2’s votes and the original positions in brackets. Happy to call these the final results as they’re slightly more to my taste overall  . Particularly happy to have “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in the Top 10, “Across The Universe” in the Top 20 and “I’m Only Sleeping” in the Top 40. :)

We finish with one of only a few Beatles songs whose primary authorship between John and Paul is disputed, though various witness sources seem to support Paul’s claim. It was included on “Revolver” and of course released as a double A side single with “Yellow Submarine” reaching #1 in the UK.

Musically it perhaps seems less experimental now than it was at the time, when George Martin’s string quartet arrangement was very much breaking with convention. The lyrical theme of loneliness was also very unconventional. “Eleanor Rigby” may be the Beatles song whose lyrics have been most discussed by sociologists and philosophers over the years.

This gained 3 sets of maximum points, fewer and “A Day In The Life”, and unlike 2nd and 3rd did not receive a full house of voters. Nonetheless it wins convincingly thanks to consistently very high scores - 12 top 5s and 15 top 10s.

This was written by Paul and evolved from “Hey Jules”, written to comfort Julian Lennon after his dad had left his wife Cynthia for Yoko Ono. It was recorded during the “White Album” sessions and was the first time they used eight track recording equipment. At over 7 minutes in length thanks to the 4 minute coda (about which much has been written by critics in an effort to make sense of it) it was the longest UK #1 single up to that point.

It was #1 in the US for 9 weeks, a joint record at the time, and in the UK is their only post 1964 pure million seller. Here it received 2 50s, 10 top 10 placings and a lowest score of 15, the highest lowest score achieved in the rate.

  11. I gave Muse’s first two hits an 8 and a 9 but this is the best yet - a proper whirlwind of a song. “Something In Your Eyes” is a really good discovery.

9 Muse Muscle Museum {2000} A re-release of an earlier miss: this feels like more archetypal Muse than their first couple and it's a fabulous throbbing track

8 Ed Case Something In Your Eyes 1st hit for this London DJ featuring Tin Tin Out vocalist Shelley Nelson, with an excellent and beautifully delivered garage track

7 U2 Beautiful Day 877th #1 and the lead from their 10th studio album: this has never quite excited me but it's a lovely, warm and joyous song

7 Warrior Warrior I can't find anything about this act and odd that the 1st hit is eponymous but it's a great club track with a strong tune and vocals

6 Azzido Da Bass Dooms Night {2000 Re-Release} Only Top 40 for this German DJ: I admire how different it is and enjoy it overall but the engine revving noise is an acquired taste

6 Erasure Freedom The lead from their 9th studio album: a sweet and uplifting number in their usual pop dance style but not new or remarkable

5 Robbie Williams And Kylie Minogue Kids A decent effort from this high profile duet: for some reason it's always left me a little cold; I think it just feels a bit lightweight

5 Atomic Kitten Follow Me Their last hit with Kerry: the low peak led to them temporarily being dropped but it's a good tune and their most grown up yet

4 Alice Deejay The Lonely One I prefer this to "Will I Ever" because it doesn't have the sugary sweetness but like that I don't feel this goes anywhere interesting

3 Madison Avenue Who The Hell Are You? One of those follow ups to a huge hit that's incredibly similar but somehow has none of the sparkle and seems a waste of time

2 R. Kelly I Wish He often went for this gospel singalong style at this point - it works better in some others but this is too long and rather a dirge

2 Lionel Richie Angel The lead single from his 6th album, and typical Lionel fare: a cheerful, safe, radio friendly and deeply uninteresting ballad

  12. I sent my list in. It turned out to be much more retro than I expected. There's loads of modern bands I wanted in but I couldn't find one that had a hit more recently than about 20 years ago and so many that didn't have one at all!

I’m planning to lean retro as there’s always recency bias overall.

  13. I'm tempted to do this but looking at the previous list it's clear that if I did it honestly, almost none of the bands I vote for will make the top list anyway.

Do it! I think the retro voice is a bit stronger than 4 years ago but even if you’re the only voter for some it’s worth getting them featured in the countdown.

  14. One cute little stat:

The first vote way back on 31 December from popchartfreak gave 50 to “Eleanor Rigby” and 49 to “Hey Jude”.

The last vote before the deadline in April from Brer gave 50 to “Hey Jude” and 49 to “Eleanor Rigby”.

This was included on the “Help!” album in 1965, but in the US it was released as a single and reached #1. In the UK there was later a “Yesterday” EP released in the UK with 3 other tracks which topped the EP chart. A later single release in 1976 reached #8.

Paul is the only band member on this track. He has said that the tune to “Yesterday” came to him in a dream, and he rushed to the piano upon waking to avoid forgetting it. Initially the words were “Scrambled eggs: oh my baby how I love your legs” until more suitable words were written. It is one of the most covered songs of all time, with over 2,200 known versions.

Here it gained points from all voters, including 10 top 10s and 2 maximums.
