Who Let The Dogs Out was never my cup of tea but it's quite lyrically funny looking back and I was always fascinated by its chart run - 13-14 and then a leap to 2 and all those weeks in the top ten, what happened there? Very unusual for 2000. It's never really licensed to compilations these days, I don't know if it's hard to license or if compilers are just trying to forget it ever happened.
I guess it treaded water in week 2 as the new release effect faded but interest was building. Then I think the 14-2 jump was slightly deceptive as it was on very low sales: interestingly it then had a big sales increase in week 4 but dropped 2-4 thanks to the competition. Then by the time it came back to #2 it was doing properly strong numbers.

A really strong week overall: it’s very close between the Top 2 but “Silence” just edges it. The full 8.5 minute version of the Airscape remix is totally worth it and I don’t think I know a more emotionally powerful trance record.
9 Delerium Featuring Sarah McLachlan Silence (Remixes) A sublime and euphoric remixed trance track: this builds to a huge outpouring of emotion with the beautifully expressive vocals
9 All Saints Black Coffee 876th #1: like "Pure Shores" this has William Orbit production, and it's a very special, beautifully tender and dreamy track
8 Supersister Coffee The 2nd great coffee related song of the week: a bit of a camp classic and an excellent pop song that should have been bigger
7 Everclear Wonderful Highest peak for this US rock band: a catchy charming song about pretending everything's OK as parents are getting divorced
7 Eminem The Way I Am It's quite self absorbed lyrically and a rather aggressive track, but musically it's very strong with excellent gritty production
6 Rolf Harris Fine Day This is good light hearted fun: I enjoy the scat style verses, the folky instruments, the barn dance feel and the jolliness of it
6 Texas In Demand The lead from their greatest hits album: it's a really nice heartfelt pop song; maybe a little too similar to "Say What You Want"
5 Stephen Gately I Believe His 2nd solo single that missed the Top 10: I prefer it to the lead though and it's a sweet song and charming performance
4 Baha Men Who Let The Dogs Out? One of the biggest selling non #1s of the decade for this Bahamian group: a bit silly for my taste but a quirky and inventive song
4 Vengaboys Cheekah Bow Bow (That Computer Song) An intriguing but slightly creepy song: the 1st verse turns computer terms into innuendo and the 2nd is about getting STDs
3 Whitney Houston And Enrique Iglesias Could I Have This Kiss Forever Only Enrique's 2nd Top 40: this collaboration isn't too bad but it plods somewhat, is oversung and lacks a compelling melody

This is George’s best performing song here and his most famous, written in 1969 and appearing on “Abbey Road”. It reflects joy and relief on the arrival of spring, which at the time might have brought him some respite from the troubles in the band. The track is unusual for having several time signature changes, and was an early user of a Moog synthesiser.
In 2010 it was the 3rd highest chart entry when the group’s catalogue became available to download, behind “Hey Jude” and “Let It Be”. It is the group’s most streamed track on Spotify, currently with nearly 1.3 billion plays.
This received Top 10 scores from a whopping 12 voters and a maximum from Jade. chartjack2’s votes would have pushed it into bronze position.

Some more excellent electronica here: of course the highest new entry of the week is from a recent Apprentice star! That may be the catchiest record of the week but there are a few others I prefer.
8 Roni Size And Reprazent Who Told You Highest peaking hit for this UK drum and bass duo: a very striking and delightfully manic track with relentless offbeat rhythms
8 Sister Bliss Sister Sister A minor hit for this DJ who was in Faithless: it's great and I really enjoy the echoey strings and the distorted inaudible vocals
7 Monsta Boy Featuring Denzie Sorry (I Didn't Know) Only hit for this UK garage duo to be covered by Joel Corry: the vocals are slightly scratchy but it's a really great heartfelt track
7 Placebo Slave To The Wage Musically this is less unusual than "Taste In Men" but still sounds great, and the lyrics about the rat race are very well written
6 Architechs Featuring Nana Body Groove 1st of 2 hits for this brotherly garage duo: I really like the plucked string riff and it's a very clever, catchy and smile inducing track
6 SuReal You Take My Breath Away Only hit with this credit but it's the DJ also know as Lange: one of those nice ethereal trance tracks with a soaring female vocal
5 Orion Eternity Only hit for this Finnish DJ: quite a chilled out trance track with some gentle strings and slightly cheesy whispering, but enjoyable
5 DJ Luck And MC Neat Featuring JJ Ain't No Stoppin' Us Their 3rd Top 10 before the diminishing returns kick in: tamer and less remarkable than the others but with a nice sound world
4 Iceberg Slimm Nursery Rhymes Only Top 40 for this UK rapper in the Jay-Z style with a children's chorus: quite catchy but his rapping style is a bit over the top
3 The Beautiful South Closer Than Most Lead single from their 7th album: their themes are always interesting but musically I find this a pedestrian version of their style
2 Melanie B Tell Me Her 2nd solo hit: this doesn't do much for me as there's no subtlety and it's angry throughout with no real melody or shaping

Another John song that was a pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre here. Its promotional video was also a key early example of that medium. Like its double A twin “Penny Lane” written by Paul, it’s based on real childhood memories. Strawberry Field was a Salvation Army house and garden in Liverpool: the site is still there and was opened to the public in 2019.
Like “Tomorrow Never Knows” the track uses Indian instruments and experimental techniques such as backwards recording. It’s also the most celebrated use of a Mellotron keyboard. John considered it his best work with The Beatles. Apparently Brian Wilson, who had been struggling to complete the Beach Boys’ “Smile” album, said on hearing the track that they’d got there first with what he wanted to do.
This received Dot’s 50 points and was in the Top 10 of more than half the voters, with nobody giving it less than 12.

This was the last single while the band were together and the title track of the last studio album. It debuted at #2 in the UK but was held off by the rather eclectic “Wand’rin’ Star” by Lee Marvin, but did top the Billboard chart after achieving the highest ever debut there at #6.
It features backing vocals from Linda McCartney, the only time she contributed to a Beatles song, a guitar solo from George, and a backing orchestra which features quietly in the single mix. Clearly it isn’t the most inventive Beatles track musically but I still find the lyrics and the simplicity of it moving.

Some enjoyable lesser known electronica here but it’s the well known one that takes the top spot!
9 Zombie Nation Kernkraft 400 Only hit for this German DJ which samples a 1984 computer game: it's a brilliantly stirring and unique techno house track
8 Soulwax Too Many DJs 1st Top 40 for this Belgian DJ act also called 2manyDJs: a very enjoyable and rocky track with interesting elements like beatboxing
8 Anastacia I'm Outta Love Debut hit for this US singer and a great chart run: this has an old school soul sound about it that works perfectly with her big voice
7 Timo Maas/Martin Bettinghaus Ubik 1st Top 40 for this German producer and another interesting and enjoyable electronic track that seems to cross into other genres
6 Green Day Minority The lead single from the "Warning" album and it romps along nicely: not a stand-out of theirs but a fun and well written song
5 Pink Most Girls My favourite of her 1st batch of hits and you can see glimpses of her star quality here, but still quite a run of the mill RnB song
5 Scott And Leon You Used To Hold Me 1st hit for this UK garage duo with an 80s cover: it isn't dramatically different from the original but a decent and enjoyable effort
4 Foo Fighters Breakout 4th single from "There Is Nothing Left To Lose": it's pleasant but it feels like Foo Fighters by numbers to me and not distinctive
3 Billie Piper Something Deep Inside I remember watching this on TOTP with my parents and them saying disparagingly it's a typical 2000 song: they weren't wrong
2 Sisqo Unleash The Dragon "Thong Song" had so much drama and this feels so flat in comparison; I couldn't care less whether the dragon is unleashed or not
1 Mariah Carey Featuring Westlife Against All Odds 875th #1: Phil's original at least had sensitivity; this is overblown but it's Mariah's final chorus that elevates it from bad to terrible

This was the closing track on “Revolver” in 1966 . As well as using Indian instruments and an irregular drum beat, it has backwards guitar playing and uses sampling techniques based on pre-recorded segments. The idea that you would make a track only for a recording and not for performance was quite new at the time.
The initial critical reception was mixed - one NME journalist expressed confusion that we are being asked to relax and float downstream in the midst of seagulls and noises that sound like they’re from outer space. However it is now seen as a pioneering track not only of the psychedelic rock genre but of electronic music.
Didn’t this do well here? It’s the only track not on the original red and blue albums to even make the Top 20.

Never Be Alone and Angel Numbers / Ten Toes must be close to dropping out as well though? Although maybe not close enough for Bad Habits to jump them next week
Yeah Never Be Alone I think will hold for 1 more week but it’s very much on the way out. Angel Numbers / Ten Toes I’m indeed expecting to be jumped by Bad Habits next week. Expecting at least 2 new entries though.

2024 Albums Year To Date Estimates
in UK Charts
48k at #56
Sales for The Highlights in 2024 will be a fair bit higher than 2023 even though it won’t be the year end #1 due to extra tracks having been added to the album and their streams counting to it.
