This was primarily a John song, and was released as a single in April 1965 and later included on the “Help!” album. It’s another track with a distinctive riff played by George on the Rickenbacker 12 stringed guitar, and an interesting coda section.

Like “A Hard Day’s Night” from the previous year, it feels like a step forward from everything that went before, both lyrically with its more sophisticated theme and musically with more avant garde and complex instrumentation. It was also the first Beatles track to exceed 3 minutes.

Here it’s the 3rd of 6 songs to receive points from every voter.

  5. Europapa probably not coming to do a Think About Things then - it’s done incredibly well to be in the Spotify Top 50 for a few days having not been performed in the final though.

It would be great to get 4 Eurovision songs in the Top 40 - obviously the worst case scenario is only getting 1 as 3 of them are looking precarious.

This John written song that opened “Abbey Road” and was the grittier double A side single twin of “Something”. It was inspired by counterculture figures speaking to him after he and Yoko had been joining anti Vietnam war protests, whose slogan was “Come together - join the party!”

The song’s bluesy style was the subject of a lawsuit for its similarity to Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me”, which no doubt inspired it. Ringo placed tea towels on the drums to create the distinctive damp sound.

This would also have reached the Top 10 including chartjack2’s votes.

  7. This group is much much weaker than the last, only redeemed by some great dance tunes.

8 Underworld Cowgirl 6th Top 40 for this group with a live version of a 04' track: it's marvellous with their usual stream of consciousness style

8 Madonna Music 872nd #1 and her 10th: an excellent electro-pop song with quite an unusual but striking and effective monotone chorus

7 Agnelli And Nelson Hudson Street An enjoyable euphoric trance tune from the production duo that captures the bustling atmosphere of the New York street

7 Element Four Big Brother UK TV Theme The work of a production duo including Paul Oakenfold: it's a great track and was the sound of the summer with the show

7 Yomanda On The Level Another hot for this Northern Irish DJ: I prefer this to "Sunshine" and really enjoy the frantic nature of the instrumental

6 Baby D Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Remix) I love the original, and this garage remix with MC Tails works surprisingly well, retaining much of the beauty of the record

6 Glamma Kid Bills 2 Pay Last hit for this Jamaican performer based around a sample of Blondie's "Rapture": it's quite messy but a really strong tune

6 Madasun Feel Good Last of their 3 hits before they were sadly dropped: nothing Earth-shattering but once again sweet and sincerely performed

5 Robbie Rivera Presents Rhythm Bangers Bang Only Top 40 for this Puerto Rican house producer who's worked on other hits: it's nice and I like the scat style hook on it

5 Tru Faith And Dub Conspiracy Freak Like Me A cover of a 1995 song that was a minor hit here: there'll be a much better version but this is quite a nice garage effort

4 The Bloodhound Gang The Ballad Of Chasey Lain Their 2nd and last hit: this get points for being bery catchy but the vocals are incredibly scratchy and the lyrics very crude

4 Lil' Kim No Matter What They Say The lead single from her second album and a perfectly decent Latin influenced RnB effort but it's not at all remarkable

3 Bon Jovi Say It Isn't So I find the vocal effect on this where he sounds like he's underwater quite odd, and it's quite an unremarkable song otherwise

3 Toploader Just Hold On The 3rd hit from "Onka's Big Moka" and a big step down from the enchanting "Achilles Heel": quite bland and throwaway

3 En-Core Featuring Stephen Emmanuel And Eska Coochy Coo Only Top 40 for this UK garage artist and London singer: it's fine as a backing track but doesn't really go anywhere for me

2 A1 Take On Me 873rd #1: covering an all time great clearly worked for them but it isn't very good and the distortion on "twooo" is ill advised

2 Daphne And Celeste School's Out Their last hit and it's probably the most listenable, but actually quite a dull cover suggesting they were running out of ideas

1 Lolly Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Last of her 5 hits: there's no attempt to be creative with this cover, and there's something about her vocal tone I don't enjoy

1 Kid Rock American Bad Ass His last Top 40 until he strikes gold in 8 years, but it's very shouty and lyrically obnoxious with an air of unpleasant bravado

  8. Much as I love The Code it isn’t hugely catchy, so in a way I’m surprised it’s done as well as it has on streaming. The two catchiest songs in the competition were Europapa which has been handicapped and Rim Tim Tagi Dim which hasn’t taken off post contest for whatever reason.

It’s back to back George as this song from the “White Album” lands here. The plaintive ballad was written after the group’s return from India and might be thought to lament the disharmony within the group or the state of the world generally. George’s friend Eric Clapton contributed to the recording. Originally it was going to be a simple acoustic track but in the end it was given a much heavier rock style production.

This received chartjack2’s belated 50 points, and the scores for the next few are so close that this would have come 8th with his votes counted. :o It’s certainly a beautiful and mesmerising track.

  10. Don't think he had anything in the 2016 EOY either - other than that it's been every year from 2011 onwards.

It appears not - I’d assumed Thinking Out Loud would have been lingering enough in 2016 to make it but I guess that’s before streaming really took over.

  11. Actually I have Saturn right on the 155k required for #100 so must be just outside.

Like That I have very close too, around 153k.

Hell N Back can’t be far off either, though I haven’t worked out how much it must have done this year before it re-charted.

I’ve long thought auto-qualifying isn’t all it’s cracked up to be as it actually means you’re statistically likely to have a higher proportion of very low finishes in the final. Better that the song is put out of its misery in the semis if it isn’t good enough.
