Round 6: Year End Survivor #112
A strong Top 5. I’m now going for Good Charlotte: it’s catchy but the lyrics are a little silly.

Round 6: Year End Survivor #112
A 6th place for Jordin has been tattooed into the archives. This was the 1st hit for the “American Idol” star and originally charted in April 2008. However it did not peak until much later in the year when it reached #24 following the success of “No Air”. 6th: Jordin Sparks - Tattoo 18/30 votes (60%) 7th: Pussycat Dolls - Hush Hush: Hush Hush 10/31 votes (32%) 8th: Ja Rule featuring Case - Livin’ It Up 13/33 votes (39%) 9th: Destiny’s Child featuring T.I. and Lil Wayne - Soldier 12/30 votes (40%) 10th: Sergio Mendes featuring The Black Eyed Peas - Mas Que Nada 12/32 votes (32%)

The Killers for me: one of my very favourite songs from that period.

The Final: Year End Survivor #111
Don’t tell her, but Madonna has been resoundingly beaten, leaving the final we probably all expected. The 2nd single from “Music” reached #4 in December 2000. The country-dance style of the track drew comparisons with Sheryl Crow. 3rd: Madonna - Don’t Tell Me 20/31 votes (65%) 4th: Flip & Fill - Shooting Star 18/32 votes (56%) 5th: Alesha Dixon - The Boy Does Nothing 13/33 votes (39%) 6th: Sean Paul - Temperature 14/31 votes (45%) 7th: Feist - 1234 10/32 votes (31%) 8th: Cascada - What Hurts The Most 12/34 votes (35%) 9th: Nickelback - Someday 10/30 votes (33%) 10th: Westlife - What Makes A Man 21/33 votes (64%)

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
“Without Me” isn’t a big Eminem favourite for me, so again I’m looking further down the chart for the top highlights. 9 DJ Shadow You Can't Go Home Again Only his 2nd Top 40 and the 1st was in 1997: this is a really beautiful, calming and mesmerising instrumental dance track 8 Korn Here To Stay Their biggest hit to date and a reminder of how emotionally powerful this style of music can be when it isn't too shouty 8 The Electric Soft Parade Empty At The End The OCC have this as a double A side with "This Given Line": it's their last Top 40 and both great tracks in their usual style 7 Eminem Without Me 927th #1: the very strong lead single from "The Eminem Show" with the "guess who's back" riff that will become iconic 7 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Spread Your Love Their 4th single and biggest so far: this has a really strong baseline and swirling guitars and could easily be from the '90s 6 Rhianna Oh Baby Only Top 40 for this English singer and it's a really pretty track: shame a Barbadian artist with a similar name will come along 6 Atomic Kitten It's OK! A 3rd Too 3 hit since they really became superstars: nothing groundbreaking but an enjoyable song and I like the violin lines 5 Ian Van Dahl Reason Their 3rd hit as each one peaks lower than the last: the usual high emotion dance that works well but has a limited shelf life 5 Westlife Bop Bop Baby This entering at #5 was a shock after 10 #1s and a #2: it's a decent upbeat track in a similar style to "World Of Our Own" 4 A Starbucks Quite a surprise that they followed up the heavy but great "Nothing" with this very poppy number: it's fine but not special 4 Ms Dynamite It Takes More 1st solo hit for this UK artist: really strong production but the melody isn't that interesting and the lyrics are a little tedious 3 Lauren Waterworth Baby, Now That I've Found You Only hit for this "Pop Idol" contestant signed by Pete Waterman: this '60s cover doesn't do much with the song but is sweet 2 The Saw Doctors This Is Me Only Top 40 this century for this Irish folk rock band: it's a very happy go lucky track that I don't really think goes anywhere 1 Billy Bragg And The Blokes Take Down The Union Jack Last Top 40 as lead for the protest singer and it's horrid: just a bunch of political tropes strung together over a guitar line 2002 Week 23: #1324 08/06/2002 Will Young Light My Fire 1 {1}-1-6-14-17-24-32-32-38-40-48-42-50-57-69-71-61R(2)-44-47-44->20 #1325 08/06/2002 Ant And Dec We're On The Ball 3 {3}-4-9-16-26-41-51-54-50-36-70->11 #1326 08/06/2002 DJ Otzi Hey Baby (Unofficial World Cup Remix) 10 {10}-19-27-42-73R(2)-67R(2)-75->7 08/06/2002 The Sex Pistols God Save The Queen {2002} 15 {15}-30-44->3 #1327 08/06/2002 Busta Rhymes/P Diddy/Pharrell Pass The Courvoisier - Part II 16 {16}-23-34-48-60-61-63-71R(95)->8 #1328 08/06/2002 Ozzy Osbourne Dreamer/Gets Me Through 18 {18}-20-29-40-45-59->6 #1329 08/06/2002 Bell And Spurling Goldenballs (Mr Beckham To You) 25 {25}-32-36-56->4 #1330 08/06/2002 The England Boys Go England 26 {26}-46-52->3 #1331 08/06/2002 Ferry Corsten Punk 29 {29}-51-66->3 #1332 08/06/2002 Reel You Take Me Away 31 {31}-55->2 #1333 08/06/2002 Orbital Rest And Play EP 33 {33}-59-74->3 #1334 08/06/2002 Dario G Carnaval 2002 34 {34}-50-71->3

The Best Song Contest in the World... Ever! Part IX - Results
I had a terrible start to the series and wasn’t even on the leaderboard at all until edition 5, so I’m chuffed to have turned it around and climbed into the Top 10. Also I like that my 2 best results have both been ‘60s tracks, The Electric Prunes and Nina Simone. They couldn’t be more different from each other and I think they’re the only ‘60s tracks that have been entered by anyone in the whole series, so hopefully that shows that old stuff can be varied and can do well!

“Azizam” having fewer plays on its 3rd day than 2018 song “All The Stars” (2 months after the Super Bowl boost) is pretty wild. That doesn’t mean it won’t recover or be a big hit; it’s more a reflection of how things are in 2025.

Quite tough but I went for Robyn. Even though I did vote for it to win first time it was in quite a weak group and isn’t one of her best.

Round 8: Year End Survivor #111
Shooting across the sky into oblivion are Flip & Fill. This was a cover of a 1998 happy hardcore song and their biggest hit, reaching #3 in July 2002. They had another 6 hits afterwards but none of them graced the Top 10. 4th: Flip & Fill - Shooting Star 18/32 votes (56%) 5th: Alesha Dixon - The Boy Does Nothing 13/33 votes (39%) 6th: Sean Paul - Temperature 14/31 votes (45%) 7th: Feist - 1234 10/32 votes (31%) 8th: Cascada - What Hurts The Most 12/34 votes (35%) 9th: Nickelback - Someday 10/30 votes (33%) 10th: Westlife - What Makes A Man 21/33 votes (64%)

Round 5: Year End Survivor #112
Next to be silenced are the Pussycat Dolls with their last hit before their long hiatus until 2019. The single was remixed to have a more dance-like style and included an interpolation of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”. It had a 15 week download era Top 75 run, peaking at #17 in July 2009. 7th: Pussycat Dolls - Hush Hush: Hush Hush 10/31 votes (32%) 8th: Ja Rule featuring Case - Livin’ It Up 13/33 votes (39%) 9th: Destiny’s Child featuring T.I. and Lil Wayne - Soldier 12/30 votes (40%) 10th: Sergio Mendes featuring The Black Eyed Peas - Mas Que Nada 12/32 votes (32%)
