Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
On my phone it all comes out on one screen but makes each row of the table many lines tall to fit the comments. I don’t know how best to get the stuff from my Excel workbook to here? At the moment I’m copying it into a phone note and then copying that into here (if I try and copy straight from Excel it says it’s trying to create a file attachment, and usually thinks for a while and then errors).

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
It’s incredible how many DJ acts there are getting their only hit here, of which some are better than others. The first new Top 2 of the year was a very close race between “More Than A Woman” and “Addicted To Bass”, separated by around 500 sales at the top. I slightly prefer the latter but love both. My first time doing this on the new site - hopefully it comes out readable! 9 Puretone Addicted To Bass Puretone is an Australian DJ; he features singer Amiel Daemion on a brilliantly infectious throbbing drum and bass track 9 Aaliyah More Than A Woman 917th #1: the lyrics feel so fitting for a posthumous hit; a straightforward RnB record but somehow very heartwarming 8 Shimon And Andy C Body Rock Only hit for these 2 drum and bass DJs originally released last September: it's a unique and captivating instrumental 8 Ash There's A Star The 5th single from their very successful "Free All Angels" run, and another really lovely, tender and hopeful ballad 8 Lange Featuring Skye Drifting Away The only Top 40 for British DJ Stuart Langelaan and it's a beautifully euphoric dance track with dreamy floating vocals 7 Dr Dre Featuring Knoc-Turn'Al Bad Intentions A soundtrack single and the only hit featuring US rapper Knoc-turn-al - not quite classic Dre but great and love the riff 7 So Solid Crew Presents Mr Shabz Featuring MDB And Haters Obviously not as distinctive as "21 Seconds" but a strong and catchy garage track giving them a deserved 3rd Top 10 7 DJ Garry Dream Universe Only hit for this Dutch club DJ: a really good instrumental dance track and I enjoy the wood block style main theme 6 Goldtrix Presents Andrea Brown It's Love (Trippin') This reminds me of Kosheen's "Hide U" but not as good: it's a cover of a Jill Scott track and the only hit for this DJ duo 6 Psychedelic Waltons Featuring Roisin Murphy Wonderland Their only hit: I don't know much about the act but it's a nice retro sounding track and Roisin's vocals are always good 6 Dreamcatcher I Don't Wanna Lose My Way Their only hit with a similae style trance track to "Drifting Away" with ethereal female vocals, but not quite as strong 5 Public Domain Let Me Clear My Throat/Too Many MC's Last of their 3 hits and both sides are fairly good, but they're slightly shouty and not compelling like "Operation Blade…" 5 Jay-Z Girls, Girls, Girls I really like the luxurious "ah baby" sample, and it's decent though the "girls girls girls" becomes slightly grating after a time 5 Mark Picchiotti Presents Basstoy Featuring Dana Runnin' Only hit for this DJ reworking a track by Basstoy: this isn't a bad dance song that reminds me of "Ride On Time" in style 4 Backstreet Boys Drowning Released from "The Hits - Chapter One", there's nothing wrong with this song but it's quite standard and lacks sparkle 4 Mr Pink Presents The Program Love And Affection Only hit for this DJ with a remake of Joan Armatrading's "Love And Affection" from 1976, which I'd much rather hear 4 Jon Cutler Featuring E-Man It's Yours Both DJs getting their only hit, with spoken bits sampling "It's Yours" by T La Rock and Jazzy Jay from 1984; this is alright 3 DJ Aligator Project The Whistle Song (Blow My Whistle Bitch) Only Top 40 for this Iranian-Danish DJ: he reached #57 with it before but this remake was huge, and it's trashy but catchy 3 Nelly Furtado On The Radio (Remember The Days) Most of Nelly's early hits have a quirky folk style but this is a very standard pop RnB track without much individuality 2 Milk And Sugar/John Paul Young Love Is In The Air Mike Milk and Steven Sugar were a German house duo: this reworking of John Paul Young's 1977 hit feels unnecessary 2 O.P.M. El Capitan Their 2nd and last hit about their favourite rum: "Heaven Is A Halfpipe" at least had a certain charm which this lacks 2002 Week 4 (as usual repeat Top 40 hits will be skipped): 26/01/2002 George Harrison My Sweet Lord {2002} 1 {1}-4-8-15-30-43-51-65-58-70->10 #1111 26/01/2002 Pink Get The Party Started 2 {2}-3-2-3-5-8-13-16-20-27-23-36-45-53-70->15 #1112 26/01/2002 Christina Milian AM To PM 3 {3}-9-9-11-16-19-29-44-52-64-60->11 #1113 26/01/2002 The Chemical Brothers Star Guitar 8 {8}-23-27-33-49-70-71-67R(2)->8 #1114 26/01/2002 allSTARS* The Land Of Make Believe 9 {9}-17-19-25-39-52-65-74R(2)->8 #1115 26/01/2002 Mercury Rev The Dark Is Rising 16 {16}-39-50->3 #1116 26/01/2002 P Diddy Featuring The Neptunes Diddy 19 {19}-41-55-73->4 #1117 26/01/2002 Wheatus Wannabe Gangstar/Leroy 22 {22}-48-62-68-69->5 #1118 26/01/2002 Elton John This Train Don't Stop There Anymore 24 {24}-46-65-75->4 #1119 26/01/2002 Live Element Be Free 26 {26}-49->2 #1120 26/01/2002 Super Furry Animals It's Not The End Of The World 30 {30}-67->2

Round 8: Year End Survivor #107
All brilliant but went for the Caesars, just because I feel more of an emotional connection with the other 2 I guess.

Round 8: Year End Survivor #107
No longer holding on is Bob Sinclar. “World Hold On (Children Of The Sky)” reached #9 in July 2006. It still does very well on streaming, regularly appearing in the weekly dance chart. I’m sure Bob won’t be too upset as the similarly whistle-y “Love Generation” won the #104 survivor and is through to the ultimate round. 4th: Bob Sinclar featuring Steve Edwards - World Hold On (Children Of The Sky) 12/28 votes (41%) 5th: Mya - Case Of The Ex 10/34 votes (29%) 6th: Missy Elliott - Gossip Folks 17/32 votes (53%) 7th: U2 - Electrical Storm 15/34 votes (44%) 8th: Jamelia - DJ / Stop 11/32 votes (34%) 9th: Nickelback - Photograph 13/34 votes (38%) 10th: Chuckie & LMFAO - Let The Bass Kick In Miami Girl 14/36 votes (39%)

Round 5: Year End Survivor #108
We’re eliminating decidedly lukewarm stuff from Craig David from his 4th album “Trust Me”. “Hot Stuff (Let’s Dance)” peaked at #7 in November 2007, outdoing the #18 peak of the album’s lead single “This Is The Girl”. It was Craig’s last Top 10 hit until his 2015 comeback. 7th: Craig David - Hot Stuff 12/28 votes (43%) 8th: Vanessa Jenkins and Bryn West featuring Sir Tom Jones and Robin Gibb - Barry Islands In The Stream 21/35 votes (60%) 9th: Ronan Keating featuring Yusuf - Father And Son 13/30 votes (43%) 10th: Leon Jackson - When You Believe 12/35 votes (34%)

Buzzjack's Ultimate UK Number 7 Single - 2nd Semi-Final
I’ll always love “Your Song” - I know it’s not adventurous or ground breaking but it’s so full of genuine feeling for me. And “Animal Nitrate” falling right at the end is a shame too.

Round 2: Year End Survivor #109
I actually really really do not enjoy “Hey Baby” and everything else is just about OK ish, so have gone for that.

Round 2: Year End Survivor #109
Son Of Dork was formed by James Bourne after Busted split in November 2005. Their one and only album was called “Welcome To Loserville” and the lead single, “Ticket Outta Loserville”, reached #3 in November 2005. When the follow up only reached #10 James had a moan live on the chart show. 10th: Son Of Dork - Ticket Outta Loserville 15/31 votes (48%)

Are the Charts Real Anymore?
We still have a record of pure million sellers. It’s there in The Chart Vault. 185 songs or so have got there and it’s virtually a closed group now - a few more songs might trickle over the line if you give it a couple of decades. Of course a million paid for sales is more of an achievement than a million streaming equivalent sales. But nothing will likely ever sell a million copies again. Likely nothing will ever even sell 300k paid for copies again. We can recognise that certain totals meant more in the past while still celebrating current hits reaching those milestones. Of course 1 stream = 1 sale and nothing further counts, while making the chart much faster, would mean first week “sales” could be in the millions. So that would surely only aggravate the distortion between old and new totals.

Year End Survivor Results
Year end #105 results: 1st: The Killers - Read My Mind 19/34 votes (56%) “Read My Mind” was the 7th Top 20 hit for The Killers, reaching #15 in February 2007, and having a good chart run for a #15 peak. Brandon Flowers described it as the best song he had ever written, and The Pet Shop Boys teamed up with them to make a remix. 2nd: Gorillaz - Dirty Harry 15/34 votes (44%) “Dirty Harry” was the 3rd single from “Demon Days” after “Feel Good Inc” and “Dare”, reaching #6 in November 2005. Buzzjack's Ultimate UK Number 7 Single - 2nd Semi-Final
Some sad losses - Tori, Ram Jam, Blancmange and Yello just on this page, but it was a pretty stacked semi so inevitable. The highest wild card in Semi 1 came 39th so delighted to see that I’ve at least equalled that! 😎

Round 4: Year End Survivor #108
Craig for me - what a dreary bit of sampling. At least Fergie tried to do something different even if the end product was a mess.
-
Round 7: Year End Survivor #107
I went for Bob Sinclar - great but his #104 winner is even better.
-
Round 1: Year End Survivor #109
Also Son Of Dork for me - quite a lot of meh here but that’s the mehest.

Round 4: Year End Survivor #108
The motley crew have been banished to an island far far away. “Barry Islands In The Stream” was created by the “Gavin And Stacey” characters for Comic Relief. It reached #1 in March 2009 but had a rather ungraceful 1-3-23-51 chart run, leading to it missing the year end Top 100. At the time Sir Tom Jones’ feature on the record made him the oldest #1 artist: Captain Sir Tom Moore holds it now of course. 8th Vanessa Jenkins and Bryn West featuring Sir Tom Jones and Robin Gibb - Barry Islands In The Stream 21/35 votes (60%) 9th: Ronan Keating featuring Yusuf - Father And Son 13/30 votes (43%) 10th: Leon Jackson - When You Believe 12/35 votes (34%)

Round 7: Year End Survivor #107
It’s a case of the ex participant as Mya leaves. She had previously featured on Pras Michel’s huge #2 hit “Ghetto Superstar” and Blackstreet’s Top 10 hit “Take Me There”, and would feature on the #1 “Lady Marmalade” cover later in the year. This was her only solo Top 10, reaching #3 in February 2001. 5th: Mya - Case Of The Ex 10/34 votes (29%) 6th: Missy Elliott - Gossip Folks 17/32 votes (53%) 7th: U2 - Electrical Storm 15/34 votes (44%) 8th: Jamelia - DJ / Stop 11/32 votes (34%) 9th: Nickelback - Photograph 13/34 votes (38%) 10th: Chuckie & LMFAO - Let The Bass Kick In Miami Girl 14/36 votes (39%)
