  1. Nelly’s run has been good but it’s gone the way of all good things. This was the 3rd of 4 huge hits from the “Loose” album, reaching #4 in December 2006. It appears here on the strength of its 2007 sales: I wonder whether it also made the 2006 list…? 3rd: Nelly Furtado - All Good Things (Come To An End) (44%) 4th: Lily Allen - LDN 15/33 votes (45%) 5th: T2 featuring Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken 14/28 votes (50%) 6th: Avril Lavigne - Don’t Tell Me 15/33 votes (45%) 7th: Eminem - When I’m Gone 8/30 votes (27%) 8th: Stereophonics - Handbags & Gladrags 10/31 votes (32%) 9th: Puff Daddy featuring R. Kelly - Satisfy You 27/29 votes (93%) 10th: Cliff Richard - Santa’s List 18/30 votes (60%)
  2. I hadn’t realised until the last few survivors how much opprobrium there was for Razorlight. I really like “Wire To Wire” and I’m switching to S Club, which is quite sweet for a slushy charity ballad but not something I care to revisit.
  3. So good to know ya but it’s bye bye Ordinary Boys. “I Luv U” peaked at January 2007 and was one of the first bunch of hits to chart a couple of weeks before its physical release. It followed Preston’s “Big Brother” stint in 2006 and subsequent relationship with Chantelle Houghton. However the Ordinary Boys would never chart again after this. 6th: Ordinary Boys - I Luv U 14/32 votes (44%) 7th: Abs - What You Got 12/31 votes (39%) 8th: N Dubz - I Need You 11/28 votes (39%) 9th: 50 Cent - Just A Lil’ Bit 10/31 votes (32%) 10th: Ronan Keating - I Hope You Dance 14/27 votes (52%)
  4. I hope Geraldine also prepared a 9th place song. This was the first of 3 hits for the Peter Kay alias, reaching #2 in October 2008. Of course Peter Kay had 2 charity #1s in his own name too, so all in all a chart history most actual musicians could only dream about. 9th: Geraldine - The Winner’s Song 13/30 votes (43%) 10th: Peter Andre - Insania 13/33 (39%)

  7. I’ve just no idea what “Back To Friends” sold before it entered the Top 100, but it can’t have been doing much as it’s shifted 156k since then. Could the 6.5 year run for “Someone You Loved” be coming to an end? Moved 92-96 this week.

  11. It’s time for my 3rd and final 10/10 of the year. Not everything Coldplay have done in the last 25 years has been brilliant, and lately it’s mostly been quite bland. But this was when their sound, Chris’s voice and the storytelling came together to make something incredibly moving. The reverse car crash video is exceptional too. We also have a couple of the best pop songs of the period here in “Dirrty” and “Stronger”. 10 Coldplay The Scientist A beautiful lyrically heartbreaking song delivered with one of Chris Martin's finest most vulnerable vocal performances 9 Christina Aguilera Featuring Redman Dirrty 940th #1: she steps right out of the pop girl bubble and does something very exciting and gritty, enhanced by Redman 8 Sugababes Stronger/Angels With Dirty Faces "Stronger" is a wonderfully powerful and introspective track with great production; the other side is more ordinary 7 Santana Featuring Michelle Branch The Game Of Love An excellent track whose vocals were tried by several others before passing to Michelle: last Top 20 for both artists 7 Shakira Objection (Tango) Originally in Spanish, the tango style of this seems really authentic and it's another delightful quirky track from her 6 Kylie Minogue Come Into My World Another "Can't Get You…" style track: not as good as that but has a hypnotic quality and is very strong for a 4th single 6 Rammstein Feuer Frei The title means "fire freely" and it's a slightly demonic track: doesn't quite grab me like "Ich Will" but also powerful 5 Tenacious D Wonderboy 1st hit for this US band about a made up superhero: I love some of it but the story needs too much spoken explanation 4 De Nuit All That Mattered (Love You Down) Only hit for this DJ with "Do You Really Like It" style production sampling '80s song "Love You Down": it's not bad 3 Ashanti Happy I quite like the flute riff that accompanies this: beyond that it's quite a dull RnB track that fades into the background 2 Shy FX And T Power Featuring Di And Skibadee Don't Wanna Know This samples J Lo's "Let's Get Loud" and lacks a strong hook: very little about it that "Shake Ur Body" doesn't do better 2 Blazin' Squad Love On The Line This samples Another Level's "Freak Me", and like their chart topper is fairly raucously performed and lacking originality 2002 Week 48: #1605 30/11/2002 Will Young Don't Let Me Down/You And I 2 {2}-9-16-27-33-26-32-44-61-71-73R(5)-74-75->13 #1606 30/11/2002 Jennifer Lopez Jenny From The Block 3 {3}-8-11-18-24-18-20-29-47-54-55-54-67->13 #1607 30/11/2002 S Club Alive 5 {5}-14-25-34-38-35-35-47-66-74-63R(3)-55-63-68-72-70R(6)->16 #1608 30/11/2002 Mariah Carey Through The Rain 8 {8}-21-28-36-45-42-44-58->8 #1609 30/11/2002 Rikki And Daz Featuring Glen Campbell Rhinestone Cowboy (Giddy Up Giddy Up) 12 {12}-25-31-42-54-54-60-64->8 #1610 30/11/2002 Sum 41 Still Waiting 16 {16}-26-32-41-53-53-65->7 #1611 30/11/2002 Lasgo Pray 17 {17}-28-35-44-63-56-59->7 #1612 30/11/2002 Kelly Llorenna Heart Of Gold 19 {19}-33-46-72->4 #1613 30/11/2002 Paul Weller Leafy Mysteries 23 {23}-58->2 #1614 30/11/2002 The Music Getaway 26 {26}-55->2 #1615 30/11/2002 Snoop Dogg From Tha Chuuuch To Da Palace 27 {27}-39-47-58-67-68->6 #1616 30/11/2002 Suede Obsessions 29 {29}-69->2 #1617 30/11/2002 Sound Bluntz Billie Jean 32 {32}-49->2 #1618 30/11/2002 Royksopp Poor Leno {2002} 38 {38}-67->2

  13. I also think of “Don’t Play That Song Again” and “No Dream Impossible” together even though they aren’t that similar. They’re both from that period when we started to become a little bit rubbish and obviously stuck in the ‘90s in our approach when others had moved on. Neither is particularly bad but the whole package was lacklustre. NDI is the better song but DPTSA the more competent performance. “Embers” was a lot worse than either of those for me. The song does sound perfectly nice on radio and seems to come from the same fixing mindset as “Dizzy”. I saw an interview with him where he said he’d really worked on his physical fitness, but then he was out of breath from the beginning. I felt so bad for him. Still it remains the only double 0 since the 2016 format change so legendary for that.
  14. Nelly now, though it’s a lovely atmospheric track.
  15. If you look with your eyes you’ll see that Lily has been eliminated. “LDN” was her 2nd single after the chart topping “Smile”, reaching #6 in September 2006. It includes a Colombian porro style sample. 4th: Lily Allen - LDN 15/33 votes (45%) 5th: T2 featuring Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken 14/28 votes (50%) 6th: Avril Lavigne - Don’t Tell Me 15/33 votes (45%) 7th: Eminem - When I’m Gone 8/30 votes (27%) 8th: Stereophonics - Handbags & Gladrags 10/31 votes (32%) 9th: Puff Daddy featuring R. Kelly - Satisfy You 27/29 votes (93%) 10th: Cliff Richard - Santa’s List 18/30 votes (60%)
  16. Switching to Ordinary Boys - a rather drippy track and those lyrics are something else.
  17. He dressed up in his best khaki, suit and ting but we still weren’t that impressed. “What You Got” is based on the 1977 song “Uptown Top Ranking” which reached #1 for Althia and Donna. The Abs track reached #4 in August 2002 and was the 1st of his 3 solo Top 10 hits. 7th: Abs - What You Got 12/31 votes (39%) 8th: N Dubz - I Need You 11/28 votes (39%) 9th: 50 Cent - Just A Lil’ Bit 10/31 votes (32%) 10th: Ronan Keating - I Hope You Dance 14/27 votes (52%)
  18. Might be on my own for now but went for “Emotion”. The original doesn’t do a lot for me in the first place and this even less - a shame this put an end to their run of great singles. Geraldine is kind of fun.
  19. 1st to be booted out of the Survivor jungle is Peter Andre. In conjunction with his stint on the ITV show Chris Moyles pushed for “Mysterious Girl”, which had only previously been a #2 hit to be given a re-release. It reached #1 in March 2004. Following that “Insania”, supposedly composed while he was on the show, reached #3 in June. 10th: Peter Andre - Insania 13/33 (39%)

Seems slightly odd to rule out “Love Me Not” which is currently in pole position, though I realise it would need to avoid ACR while “Ordinary” succumbs.
  21. The top 3 here are all great records, but “No-One Knows” wins for its timeless brilliance. 9 Queens Of The Stone Age No One Knows Their highest peak: this is wonderful from the urgent stomping accompaniment to the dark lyrics and wailing vocals 8 Yeah Yeah Yeahs Machine 1st hit for this US band: I love the gritty, assertive style and the accompaniment is like a relentless whirring machine 8 Missy Elliott Work It I love the backwards parts in the chorus and the assertive, old school feel to this: the whole track oozes style and flair 7 Moby In This World Another of his hits built on a very well chosen religious chant style hook: "Lord Don't Leave Me" by The Davis Sisters 7 Xzibit Multiply Xzibit only has 3 hits and this one was small, but it's a really well produced and catchy hip hop track with Nate Dogg 6 Dannii Minogue Put The Needle On It Her 1st solo hit in ages: while I don't think it develops as much as it could I admire her for this hard edged dance track 6 Shania Twain I'm Gonna Getcha Good The lead single from "Up!": hard to follow such an enormous era and I think this is a very nice effort with cute lyrics 5 Phil Collins Can't Stop Loving You A cover of a song by William Nichols giving him his last solo Top 40: the style suits him and he performs it very well 4 Britney Spears I Love Rock 'N' Roll Well it is the 5th single of the campaign so maybe a lazy cover is forgivable: she does do a decent performance of it 4 BBMak Out Of My Heart Their last hit and a huge underperformance from a lead single: I actually think this is quite nice though unremarkable 3 Sophie Ellis-Bextor Music Gets The Best Of Me I know it's a 4th single but this is where she went off the boil and never quite came back for me: just quite lightweight 3 Darren Hayes I Miss You His 3rd hit and he's gone back down the soppy ballad route: he does deliver this sincerely but it isn't really my thing 2 H And Claire All Out Of Love/Beauty And The Beast Like with Steps their last hit includes a twee showtune cover, while the 1st side seems to be a poor "One For Sorrow" 2 Westlife Unbreakable 939th #1 and their 11th from their 1st greatest hits album: very much the standard formula with nothing distinctive 2002 Week 47: #1593 23/11/2002 Christina Aguilera Featuring Redman Dirrty 1 {1}-1-3-6-10-19-32-45-60->9 #1594 23/11/2002 Blazin' Squad Love On The Line 6 {6}-13-23-29-39-44-36-37-51-54-60-38-70->13 #1595 23/11/2002 Sugababes Stronger/Angels With Dirty Faces 7 {7}-9-13-18-25-30-27-31-38-50-62-69-63->13 #1596 23/11/2002 Kylie Minogue Come Into My World 8 {8}-22-35-40-46-56-45-46-57-73->10 #1597 23/11/2002 Coldplay The Scientist 10 {10}-25-32-38-45-49-60-67-65->9 #1598 23/11/2002 Ashanti Happy 13 {13}-24-29-36-43-57-49-56->8 #1599 23/11/2002 Santana Featuring Michelle Branch The Game Of Love 16 {16}-28-36-43-59-73-70-62->8 #1600 23/11/2002 Shakira Objection (Tango) 17 {17}-30-34-41-48-52-47-54->8 #1601 23/11/2002 Shy FX And T Power Featuring Di And Skibadee Don't Wanna Know 19 {19}-34-43-58->4 #1602 23/11/2002 Tenacious D Wonderboy 34 {34}-59->2 #1603 23/11/2002 Rammstein Feuer Frei 35 {35}-60->2 #1604 23/11/2002 De Nuit All That Mattered (Love You Down) 38 {38}-61->2
  22. I think I’d probably put Jemini slightly higher just because the song itself is a bit of a bop, though I agree everything else is dire. And Josh Dubovie would probably have been my bottom though I agree Englebert is the most obviously terrible artist choice.

  25. “Hard Rock Hallelujah” is surely the biggest and best remembered, in the context of the competition anyway.
