James outselling Madness as well. Given Madness had a similar compilation out in 2017 I guess it isn’t a surprise. Both these bands had their first studio album No 1s last two years and I’d be interested to see what their total sales are to compare. Especially are either album near Silver?

Another from Madness just 4 years after their last. As they’ve achieved their only No 1 studio album since then (Theatre of Absurd - C’est La Vie, I’d be interested in seeing how its sales have progressed.

It did go Gold in the UK though. So people obviously listen to it. Plus his follow up album spent 28 weeks in the Top 100 which is no mean feat for a non-legacy album

Madness no 26 midweek album after Enhanced Edition released. Will end really low down. Interesting to see its total sales to date if that can shared on Friday. Despite being their only No 1 studio album, it ranks as one of their longest to hit Silver sales and may well never do so. Very much a sign of the times sadly as I always have valued the physical product yet am as guilty as anyone to settle for streaming.
  5. Enhanced edition of No 1 Madness album Theatre of the Absurd presents C’est La Vie is out on 28th June with many extras. Interested to see if he re-enters the Top 100 or even 50.

With 31 tracks of the digital version of Taylor’s album, I wonder whether it means average streams per track will be fewer than for other albums and so bring down her overall sale equivalents in the long run? Certainly her version of 1989 had a higher proportion of steams than this week’s release. Then again this is a brand new set of tracks so might be more likely to attract physical sales, esp in Week 1

Unless Madness is so far ahead Taylor fans should ensure her streams and purchases get No 1. But it’s a moral victory for Madness. Don’t care about the anti-male act thing. They’ve been a part of British culture and a big part of my life and they’ deserve a No 1 album. Doesn’t detract from what Taylor has achieved which is incredible. So I prefer the underdog here.

As a Madness fan I’d be interested to see total sales of the 3 previous albums released. Especially how near to Gold the last one is - Can’t Touch Us Now. If Taylor makes 15,000 units then I think Madness or Dolly might just stay ahead but you never know with Taylor Swift as those streams by the million can fluctuate. Should be interesting and to be honest I don’t think Taylor’s got a great deal to worry about if she misses one week.

Come on MADNESS. You deserve your first studio album Number 1! In truth Dolly deserves her first in the UK as well. But I’ve not followed her music for over 40 years.
  11. This thread got me thinking about Mr Brightside by The Killers. I think you’ll find it’s spent most weeks in every position lower than about 75. Not had time to check by over 10 weeks at No 100. Will try and let you know each position when I’ve a moment to kill(ers)!
  12. I think it would be good to include both consecutive and non consecutive for higher positions. I believe both Mariah Carey All I want for Xmas is you and Wham! Last Christmas have spent 9 weeks in total at number 2. In fact with Mariah heading for no 1 this week and Wham! at 2 it looks the latter should be the first to spend 10 weeks at number 2.

Come on The Specials!! Never saw that coming especially after Busted outsold them over the weekend. I would love them to hold onto their lead as they were literally one of my very favourite bands in my teens. It would need word to get round and more fans to buy on Thursday because TGS is on track still for No 1 going by past weeks.

Assuming 'Three Lions' falls further from its position of #83, would this be the first time in history that the No. 1 single has dropped outside the Top 100. I know Last Christmas dropped from No. 1 to nowhere at the start of the year but don't think it's ever happened to a No. 1

Has Simon Cowell lost that instinctive ability of knowing exactly what the next pop wave will be? I think PRETTYMUCH are credible performers but quite clearly the most disatrous chart performance for a band allowed the exposure of X factor. Around 6,000 sales for this week. Then Rak-Su have failed to make No.1 and only 28,000 sales for a charity record and being outsold by Wham! and Mariah Carey. There's no doubt that Little Mix and One Direction are/were global successes but they both go back a few years now.

Great to see Madness likely to get Top 5. Just checked that their first week sales of Liberty of Norton Folgate in 2009 were about 19,500. So looks like beating that which is an incredible achievement in an era where sales are generally down. In fact, this week must be their highest weekly sales of a new studio album for decades

Well done Madness. This is an excellent album that disappeared too quickly after release. Nice to have a small revival.
  18. Madness made the Top 10. Just. Yes yes yes yes . The first group to reach the Top 10 with new material (singles or albums) in each of the 70s 80s 90s 00s and 10s. Congratulations.

Gutted that Madness look to be falling outside Top 10 as wanted them to achieve a top 10 in another decade. Hate XF artists overall but have to admit Matt Cardell is deserving as he is a very talented artist and not exactly hyped as some others. The unbelievable one is Mick Hucknall. No publicity at all and nearly up to Taylor Swift which sold over 60000 last week. Expect Madness to end up 12 or 13 behind paloma faith and muse.

Damn it. Madness falling off the face of the Top 10. Do you think it can hold on in there with the number of sales. Am expecting Alt J to rise to Top 10 by Sunday for sure.

That's right. And there are quite a few that have succeeded in the Top 10 in 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s. I am sure when Depeche Mode release their next new material it will go Top 10 as always. They have an incredible string of Top 10s. Very influential band. And to be honest my note about Madness's new material is a little tongue in cheek. They only just made the Top 10 in the 70s with one single in 1979. They just had one week in the singles Top 10 in 1999 with Lovestruck. And then only just made the Top 10 albums in 2009 for one week with Liberty of Norton Folgate. So a much loved live act who will always sell out large venues and get a festival crowd going. But outside 1980-83 and a few incredibly high selling compilation albums have never quite broken into the top tier. But I've always loved them and they have to be applauded for continuing to bring out new material which is not at all bad. Not many 80s bands do this and instead appear at Festivals such as Rewind whilst Madness seem just keep crowds going at places like Glastonbury, V, T in the Park, the Olympics, buckingham palace and so on.

Ok. Not as high as I wanted Madness. I wanted them to beat their last effort in 2009 of Liberty Of Norton Folgate that peaked at 5. But this is an exceptional week for New Entries and by the looks of it Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da will easily outsell the first week sales of Liberty. It needs to shift 20,000 to do this and by my estimation it should do. Great to see a band on the 80s not settle for their smash hits of the past.

It is possible that everyone's forgotten to mention Neil Young. He's been top of Amazon CDs all week and so I expect the album Psychedelic Pill could be vying for a Top 10 spot. Let's see later today.

Thanks to those who helped with the Madness question. Looks like they may be the first group to achieve a top 10 position (in either singles or albums) with new material in each of the 70s 80s 90s 00s and 10s. Clearly the Rolling Stones record of doing this every decade since the 60s far outscores Madness. And their next album should make it 6 decades when it comes. My prediction for Sundays 1. Calvin 2. Kylie 3. Taylor 4. Emile Sande 5. Mumford 6. Madness

This Madness discussion on the chart performance of their new material has got me searching the record books. The question is 'has any band appeared in the UK Top 10 (singles or albums) with new material in each of the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s?' My searches have found big names like Cliff Richard, Michael Jackson and Tom Jones have done this. But can anyone find a band that has achieved this? It is possible that should Madness appear in the Top 10 albums on Sunday, they might be the first band or group to have achieved such a feat.
