Top 50 one hit wonders of the last 30 years
An Australian gay-icon now, who's dance-pop crossover song collected many awards. http://i50.tinypic.com/2hmcxtk.png #12 Sam Sparro http://i46.tinypic.com/2nm0gv5.png The Song: Black & Gold The Year: 2008 Chart Points: 2,001 points Chart Run: 32-21-7-6-6-7-5-6-7-6-7-10-9-13-16-20-23-22-25-26-30-29-40-X-50-X Peak: 5 Weeks in chart: 24 eHuebHTD-lY Comment: Australian singer Sam Sparro caught the eye of soul sensation Chaka Khan while singing in church. From then he went on to star in a McDonalds advert and have a music career. His debut, self-titled album was home to hit "Black and Gold" a song we wrote while working in a London coffee shop. The song charted in 13 countries. His second album released in 2012 was a success in Belgium and across Europe but failed to make any impact anywhere else. Sparro is still writing music. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2008: "21st Century Life" #42 (Australia) 2012: "Happiness" #1 (Belgium) 8/10 - Like Aloe Blacc it's too soon to call. But it's possible that he can get another single to re-enter. However it's not looking likely.

American rapper gone singer made it big with his recession appropriate song. http://i45.tinypic.com/2jfklrk.png #13 Aloe Blacc http://i46.tinypic.com/2exbhhi.png The Song: I Need A Dollar The Year: 2011 Chart Points: 1,925 points Chart Run: 49-25-22-15-9-4-2-2-3-5-10-14-13-5-7-20-22-27-33-43-45-45-38-41-X Peak: 2 Weeks in chart: 24 nFZP8zQ5kzk Comment: Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III decided to us the name Aloe Blacc as a stage name for releasing music. As one half of the 90s rap duo Emanon he has released 5 albums and toured Europe and the US. As part of his second solo project Blacc released "I Need A Dollar". 15 charts from all over the world saw the song enter thanks to multiple television appearances and the promotion of iTunes single of the week. Israel and Belgium saw Aloe Blacc top the charts. His album "Good Things" saw 2 more singles being released. Blacc has now rejoined Emanon. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2011: "Loving You Is Killing Me" #8 (Austria) 2011: "Green Lights" #69 (Austria) 8/10 - Although it's still very soon to bestow the title of one hit wonder on Aloe Blacc, as he has rejoined Emanon, it's quite possible we'll never see any solo work of his again. However all it will take is for one of his singles to feature in a TV show or movie to see it re-enter now in the new Top 100.

Australian reality show runner-up who achieved the strange feat of charting in Ireland and not in the UK. An feat seldom achieved by non Irish acts. http://i48.tinypic.com/2eq42hf.png #14 Shannon Noll http://i49.tinypic.com/2hyx6l3.png The Song: What About Me The Year: 2004 Chart Points: 1,885 points Chart Run: 2-2-4-6-5-5-6-6-11-13-10-6-5-8-8-11-13-15-22-32-46-X Peak: 2 Weeks in chart: 21 kqyIwZpr5y0 Comment: In 2003 Australian Idol premiered on TV. Shannon Noll, managed to get to the final before losing out to winner multi-million selling Guy Sebastian. Noll's debut single, a cover of the Moving Pictures' single "What About Me" topped Australian charts and went Top 10 in New Zealand. Surprisingly, the song managed to reach #2 in Ireland, possibly the only country in Europe for it to chart. Since 2004 Noll has had 9 top ten hits in Australia but never charted in Europe since. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2004: "Drive" #4 (Australia) 2004: "Learn to Fly" #1 (Australia) 2004: "C'mon Aussie C'mon" #2 (Australia) 2005: "Shine" #1 (Australia) 2005: "Lift" #10 (Australia) 2006: "Now I Run" #6 (Australia) 2006: "Lonely" #8 (Australia) 2006: "Don't Give Up" (with Natalie Bassingthwaighte) #2 (Australia) 2007: "Loud" #3 (Australia) 2007: "In Pieces" #26 (Australia) 2011: "Switch Me On" #42 (Australia) 8.5/10 - His career is still strong in his homeland, despite it fading out slightly. It is possibel for him to chart again, especially after the randomness of his first entrance. Despite that, he is a one hit wonder.

German pop-rock band whose best selling single fared much better in Ireland than in the UK. A strange occurrence. http://i45.tinypic.com/sv2rz7.png #15 Fool's Garden http://i49.tinypic.com/20ihmvl.png The Song: Lemon Tree The Year: 1996 Chart Points: 1,877 points Chart Run: 25-8-6-2-2-2-2-1-2-2-3-3-4-4-7-9-12-12-18-19-X Peak: 1 Weeks in chart: 20 phEnpdDusss Comment: German music group from Pforzheim have had a career spanning over 20 years. When they first debuted they're self-titled EP it received little success. Success came with their 2005 release Lemon Tree. Although it only reached #26 in the UK the song went to #1 across the water in Ireland along with Austria, Sweden, Germany and Norway. The song sold over a million copies across Europe. They're career has not faltered and have been releasing albums since. They're eighth studio album "Who Is Jo King?" was released in 2012. Hits That Could Have Charted: Wild Days 1996: "Wild Days" #37 (Austria) 1997: "Why Did She Go?" #76 (Germany) 2000: "Suzy" #75 (Germany) 9/10 - They're career is still alive and it's possible they might get another entrance. Apart from that in most countries "Lemon Tree" is their only hit so they're mostly going to be one hit wonders as the are struggling to make an impact in they're homeland. The most recent single from Fool's Garden "Innocence" sounds like this. -vq2ZW_W8Bk

Now, an American front man who went solo for an album before rejoining his band. This act is responsible for spring-boarding his featured act to super stardom. http://i48.tinypic.com/161droj.png #16 Travis McCoy http://i50.tinypic.com/6qbl36.png The Song: Billionaire (feat. Bruno Mars) The Year: 2010 Chart Points: 1,841 points Chart Run: 2-5-5-5-6-8-15-15-14-14-12-8-9-14-16-26-38-44-45-49-X-36-48-X-48-X Peak: 2 Weeks in chart: 23 8aRor905cCw Comment: Gym Class Heroes front man Travis McCoy went solo during a 2010 hiatus. The singer gained worldwide recognition with the band after several global hits, his relationship with to-be megastar Katy Perry, and his solo work featuring in songs by Taio Cruz and Kelly Rowland. This time as the main artist he took up-and-coming superstar Bruno Mars under his wing in a collaboration that charted in 19 countries. The song reached #1 in The Netherlands and Israel and #2 in Ireland and New Zealand. McCoy released two more singles off his debut solo album "Lazarus" before joining back with the Gym Class Heroes and released more hits including collaboration with Adam Levine. He still features in songs and has recently lent his hand to British girl group Stooshe. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2010: "We'll Be Alright" #14 (Netherlands) 6/10 - Although he is a one hit wonder as a solo lead artist, he has featured in many hits with his band and as a featured artist so he doesn't really deserve the title.

"Baby Cakes" reached the Top 100 in 6 countries across Europe including a #3 peak in Ireland. They're follow-up "Wink One-Eye" was suggested as a 2nd single but never officially released. The group then disbanded a year later. Hits That Could Have Charted: this was their only release. 10/10 - They only ever released one song. So technically they're not only a one hit wonder, they're a one song wonder.

The song only peaked at #14 but managed an impressive 22 weeks in the Top 30. Séan was tipped to follow in the footsteps of Daniel O'Donnell, but unfortunately fell short when he never got another single into the chart. He did work with Daniel however when helping him co-write an album, and on a duet on his own 2006 album, "Life Is A Teacher". Hits That Could Have Charted: this is his only release. 8/10 - mostly an album artist, Sean O'Farrell is a singles-one hit wonder which isn't surprising given his chosen genre and the era he was starting at.

The song went Top 10 in 7 other countries across the world across 3 years. In Ireland, the song reached its global peak at #2. Since then Vanessa Amorosi has gone on to release a further 5 albums. A Grammy award winning country act who are newbies to the music scene http://i49.tinypic.com/iogs52.png #21 Lady Antebellum http://i50.tinypic.com/2bnygl.png The Song: Need You Now The Year: 2010 Chart Points: 1,783 points Chart Run: 18-3-6-9-14-25-26-30-34-36-43-39-39-45-34-37-29-36-47-48-X-36-42-X-38-48-38-43-X* Peak: 3* Weeks in chart: 26* *has charted in 2012 eM213aMKTHg Comment: American pop country group Lady Antebellum formed in 2006 but shot to worldwide fame in 2009 off the back of the album "Need You Now". The single of the same name was the biggest hit from the album charting in 23 countries worldwide. The song went top ten in 7 of these countries and #1 in Israel. "Need You Know" won the Grammy "Record Of the Year" and "Song of the Year" and has sold over 5 million records. In Ireland, the song last 26 weeks in the Top 50. The song has since charted in 2012 and has it's total weeks count up to 42. Since Need You Know, Lady Antebellum have released another album which has done very well in the US but fails to make ripples in Europe. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2009: "I Run to You" #27 (US) 2010: "American Honey" #25 (US) 2010: "Our Kind of Love" #51 (US) 2011: "Just a Kiss" #4 (Canada) 2011: "We Owned the Night" #29 (Canada) 2011: "Dancin' Away with My Heart" #46 (US) 2012: "Wanted You More" #34 (US) 7/10 - It is still too soon to say whether or not Lady Antebellum are one hit wonders. They have had one globally successful song and several successful follow-ups. It is very possible that they can chart again off the back of a new album or movie soundtrack. However, until then, it's looking like Lady Antebellum will be living off the glory of their Grammy-award winning song.

Now a classical singing phenomenon who entered of the back of his multi-lingual multi-million selling single. http://i50.tinypic.com/14w511k.png #22 Andrea Bocelli http://i50.tinypic.com/ints9u.png The Song: Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro) (feat. Sarah Brightman) The Year: 1997 Chart Points: 1,766 points Chart Run: 26-1-1-1-2-2-2-4-6-8-11-14-19-21-25-28-35-X-30-X-29-X-40-X-50-X Peak: 1 Weeks in chart: 21 qtivSTZrezc Comment: Italian classical singer Andrea Bocelli topped charts across Europe with his multi-lingual recordings of Con te Partiro. The song was #1 in Ireland, Austria, Germany, France and Switzerland. In Belgium the song was #1 on the Wallonia and Flanders chart and went on to be the highest selling single of all time. The song to date has sold 12 million copies. In Ireland the song can still be found lurking around the bottom of the iTunes top 200. The song has re-entered 3 times since it's release in 1997. In the Uk the song was kept off #1 by Olive's "You're Not Alone" and Eternal's "Wanna Be The Only One". Bocelli's career is still as poignant as it once was and has spanned 13 studio albums. He is the biggest selling singer in the history of classical music wit 80,000,000 copies sold worldwide. Bocelli has an album due out next year and releases an average of 1 song per album. Hits That Could Have Charted: 1994: "Il Mare Calmo della Sera" #24 (France) 1995: "Per amore" #15 (Netherlands) 1995: "Vivo per lei" (with Giorgia) #24 (Italy) — — 1996: "Vivo por ella" (with Marta Sánchez) #1 (Spain) 1997: "Ich lebe für sie" (with Judy Weiss) #1 (Switzerland) 1997: "Je vis pour elle" (with Helene Segara) #1 (France & Belgium) 1999: "The Prayer" (with Celine Dion) #8 (Canada) 2001: "Melodramma" #9 (Belgium) 2006: "Somos Novios (It's Impossible)" (with Christina Aguilera) #39 (Italy) 2006: "Because We Believe" (with Marco Borsato) #1 (Belgium & Switzerland) 2006: "Ama Credi E Vai" (with Gianna Nannini) #9 (Italy) 2009: "White Christmas/Bianco Natale" #16 (Portugal) 4/10 - although the song is technically a one hit wonder, he doesn't deserve this title as he as had an astounding career. Granted most of the songs he records are not in English, drastically reducing the chance that they will enter the chart, however he has had some (English) singles released in Ireland that never charted. This is mainly because he is an album artist. Despite all that, he is a singles-one hit wonder so gets notched up to a 4.

The lead single "Pumped Up Kicks" charted in over 17 countries, in which it managed #1 in Poland and Slovakia. The song has sold over 5 million copies. The band have had some minor success with follow-up singles off the Grammy nominated album, but none that charted in Ireland. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2011: "Helena Beat"[A] #70 (Canada) 2011: "Call It What You Want" #39 (Australia) 2012: "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" #56 (Canada) 2012: "Houdini" #98 (New Zealand) 5/10 - It is hard to tell which way this one will go, it is possible that they will chart again off the second album (especially with the new Top 100). However it is possible tat the second album might not live up to the debut and will flop! However it is still too soon to deem them one hit wonders, hence the 5/10.

These songs along with his up-and coming "Nothing I Won't Do" helped him win the 'Best Dance International' award in The Netherlands. Off the back of this, "Come With Me" reached the British Isles made Top 10 in brother countries. Special D managed a total of 5 hits off his debut album "Reckless" and then never released anything after. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2003: "Home Alone" #11 (Netherlands) 2004: "Nothing I Won't Do" #8 (Netherlands) 2004: "You" #18 (Netherlands) 2005: "Here I Am" #7 (Finland) 10/10 - technically a global one-album wonder, Special D vanished after his debut album. The incredibly low likelyhood of him charting with songs off that debut album in the new Top 100 means he deserves the full 10/10.

The Republic of Ireland managed to get to the quarter finals before being eliminated by the home team. This is to date Ireland's most successful outing at a international tournament. The song has been recently named "The greatest Irish song ever written" by Bono. Hits That Could Have Charted: this was his only release. 9/10 - Liam Harrison's was bound to be successful with "Give It A Lash, Jack", due to the success of The Irish Soccer Squad. However it's unclear how many songs he has released since, as records are unclear. It is likely that Liam was simply a songwriter but his Myspace page suggests he's "released" other songs. Due to the doubt, Liam will get a 9/10.

Their debut single "I Like The Way", charted in 10 countries across the globe excluding Ireland. Their highest position was a #3 smash in the UK. After touring the world, Dylan Burns and Kaz James, the duo behind the music, recorded a second album and subsequently decided that pursuing their solo careers was more important than the second album, and therefore split. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2005: "Round and Round" #35 (Australia) 10/10 - It seems that the act themselves were happy to be known as one hit wonders, as they split before trying to follow-up their hit. They get the full 10 because the probability that any other song by them will enter is highly unlikely.

By the end of 2009, they had achieved worldwide success with their single "Shake It". Top 10 in US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Austria, Germany, The UK, Ireland and Japan. Their follow-up Seventeen Forever managed some adequate success in some of these countries but never made the Irish top 50. In 2010 the band split due to disputes between lead man Mason Musso and Trace Cyrus, both of which split to pursue solo projects. Musso has retained the name Metro Station for his solo projects. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2007: "Kelsey" #25 (New Zealand) 2008: "Seventeen Forever" #42 (US) 9.5/10 - Although they did have success with "Seventeen Forever" in many countries, meaning they arent' one hit wonders there, The fact still remains that they are a one-hit wonder in Ireland. The possibility of "Seventeen Forever" re-entering now the chart is a top 100 is plausible, that's why they lose the 0.5.

Now for a half-Irish half-English duo who split up quite shortly after the success of their only song http://i50.tinypic.com/27zdwzp.png #29 Nizlopi http://i46.tinypic.com/25fj2c4.png The Song: The JCB Song The Year: 2005 Chart Points: 1,694 points Chart Run: 1-2-1-2-2-2-2-3-2-3-7-10-10-13-19-29-35-36-46-X Peak: 1 Weeks in chart: 19 k3WhQB7Hq0Q Comment: Two-Piece band from Warwickshire, emerged out of nowhere to be in contention for Christmas #1 in 2005. "The JCB Song", a song about how band member Luke Concannon's dyslexia made him want to escape to help his father at work, was #1 in the UK and Ireland the week before Christmas on both sides of the Irsih sea, but fell to #2 the following week in both cases. In the UK X-Factor winner, Shayne Ward stormed to the top with "That's My Goal". In Ireland, Irish comedian Mario Rosenstock snatched the last non-X-factor Christmas #1 to date with the parody of Will Young's former Christmas #1 "Leave Right Now", poking fun at Roy Keane's departure from Manchester United football club. Nizlopi's follow-up "Girls" never made the Top 50. In 2010 the band split officially and now Concannon's working on solo material in Galway. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2006: "Girls" #91 (UK) 10/10 - An act and song that emerged from under a rock and then climbed right back under that rock straight after. Their song is semi-associated with Christmas and still gets below mediocre airplay around Christmas.

Now time for an Oscar and Golden Globe wining song http://i49.tinypic.com/72bpxt.png #30 Glen Hansard http://i46.tinypic.com/2lv216o.png The Song: Falling Slowly (feat. Marketa Irglova) The Year: 2008 Chart Points: 1,673 poits Chart Run: 50-45-22-9-11-15-15-3-2-3-6-14-15-18-16-20-27-32-39-41-45-X Peak: 2 Weeks in chart: 21 CoSL_qayMCc Comment: Academy Award winning Glen Hansard, one of Ireland's most successful musician took the country and the world by storm when his feature film "Once" hit the silver screen. Hansard who was front man from the multi-platinum selling The Frames became the first Irsh born singer to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song. "Falling Slowly" which is bound to be near the top of the should-have-been #1s in Ireland list, only reached #2 but also achieved a #8 hit in Canada. the song has been covered by Il Divo and American idol winner Kris Allen and The Jonas Brothers. Czech singler Markéta Irglova features in the song and also shares the Oscar fame. Hansard and Irglova have now formed a folk rock duo, The Swell Season. Between The Frames, The Swell Season and solo work, Hansard has released 11 albums not-including the "Once" soundtrack. This year his solo album "Rhyhtm and Repose" reached #3 in Ireland and Top 20 in the US. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2012: "Take the Heartland" (from The Hunger Games) 2/10 - As a solo artist, he only writes songs for movies. So technically he doesn't have a solo-singles career, and isn't a one hit wonder. He is an album artist and is only here because his song was so good off one of the albums that it ended up charting. So he's here, for being too good. Because of this he doesn't deserve to be a one hit wonder.

Now a Californian band who had a hit while supporting a band who will appear later on in the chart. http://i49.tinypic.com/2saf09e.png #31 HelloGoodbye http://i47.tinypic.com/301m142.png The Song: Here (In Your Arms) The Year: 2007 Chart Points: 1,643 points Chart Run: 49-21-10-7-4-2-2-3-3-4-5-8-7-11-16-22-24-34-44-X Peak: 2 Weeks in chart: 19 6-KQ1tp_qOQ Comment: Power pop group Hellogoodbye from California, finally saw success after six years of hard work. In 2006 they toured the UK with the Plain White T's, and by the next year both bands would see their debut singles shoot up to the Top 10 in the UK and Ireland. "Here (In Your Arms)", although originally released on Halloween '06, didn't make it's impact until the summer of '07. The song reached #11 in Canada and #14 in US where it went on to achieve platinum status. In Europe, Hellogoodbye charted in Sweden, The Netherlands as well as the UK and Ireland. Their highest peak globally was, in fact, in Ireland where their song reached #2. The album that followed "Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!" contained the singles "All of Your Love" and "Baby, It's Fact" neither of which charted anywhere. After this, the band began to disband as some members wanted to finish their college education. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2007: "All of Your Love" 2007: "Baby, It's Fact" #81 (UK) 10/10 - Another perfect example of a one hit wonder. The only other song by there's that seemed to chart anywhere was in the UK and at a measly #81. Unfortunately this one-hit wonder status doesn't really come as a surprise as nobody really expected much longevity out of the band.

We're off to Romania next, to a DJ who became the first Romanian to be #1 in Ireland. http://i47.tinypic.com/15eehyo.png #32 Edward Maya http://i50.tinypic.com/14tbvbp.png The Song: Stereo Love (feat. Vika Jigulina) The Year: 2010 Chart Points: 1,638 points[ Chart Run: 17-6-1-1-1-1-3-4-7-13-12-15-15-20-21-28-32-42-42-X Peak: 1 Weeks in chart: 19 p-Z3YrHJ1sU Comment: 26 year old Romanian DJ Edward Maya had the European summer anthem of 2010. "Stereo Love" went Top 5 in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK. The song features fellow Romanian singer Vika Jigulina. The song went top 10 in Canada except featuring Canadian singer Mia Martina instead of Vika. "Stereo Love" was Edwards debut song, his only other work was on the 2006 Romanian Eurovision entry "Tornero". His follow-up also featured Vika Jigulina and was called "This Is My Life". Even though he remained a huge hit across Europe, he never managed to chart in the Britsh Isles since. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2010: "This Is My Life" (featuring Vika Jigulina) #2 (France) 2011: "Desert Rain" (featuring Vika Jigulina) 2012: "Mono in Love" (featuring Vika Jigulina) 8.5/10 - Edward Maya seems to be at the beginning of his career and may re-chart with a new hit, even though, he probably won't. His hit was huge and hasn't charted with another. So in essence he's the perfect one hit wonder, however it's too soon to say.

Next is a US country singer who found once off fame in Europe. http://i49.tinypic.com/2zfu0i8.png #33 Uncle Kracker http://i45.tinypic.com/219qgqx.png The Song: Follow Me The Year: 2001 Chart Points: 1,614 points Chart Run: 8-3-1-2-3-3-5-5-6-8-10-15-22-25-33-37-41-42-36-X Peak: 1 Weeks in chart: 19 0Gjx-ZQuQ_Y Comment: Michigan native Matthew Shafer aka Uncle Kracker made his worldwide debut with "Follow Me" in 2001. The song topped 5 charts and went Top 5 in several others including UK & USA. In Ireland however it made it all the way to #1. After a week however the juggernaut that was Kylie's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" knocked it off the top spot. The follow-up sing "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" only charted in Australia at #23 and never made any other charts. However his 2nd and 4th album were home to further Top 10 hits worldwide but never made it back in the Irish charts. His most most recent album "Midnight Special" was released this year. Hits That Could Have Charted: 2001: "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" #23 (Australia) 2002: "In a Little While" #18 (New Zealand) 2003: "Drift Away" (featuring Dobie Gray) #9 (US) 2009: "Smile" #3 (Australia) 8/10 - In some countries he has gained some repeat success however in Ireland everyone only knows him for the one song. However there is a chance that he may come back with a hit, so because of that he's earned an 8.

Now an Academy award winning singer who recorded the featured song in her Christmas movie. http://i47.tinypic.com/2ue1b9u.png #34 Kate Winslet http://i48.tinypic.com/34gvkhx.png The Song: What If The Year: 2001 Chart Points: 1,601 points Chart Run: 2-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-3-5-8-9-14-22-22-30-45-50-X Peak: 1 Weeks in chart: 18 _vId_4r925o Comment: In the run up to Christmas in 2001, "Christmas Carol: The Movie" hit the silver screen, with this song as the centerpiece of the film. The song was released as a bid for Christmas #1. Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman stole the Christmas #1 in the UK but Winslet proved the champion in Ireland lasting six weeks at #1. The song also topped charts in Belgium and Austria and went Top 10 in The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. Hits That Could Have Charted: this was her only release. 1/10 - As Winslet is an Academy Award winning actress, she hasn't got a music career and only did this song as a once off. So she's not a one hit wonder, just owner of a once off hit.
