Idg all those "x with the correct song" lol. Surely a lot of acts can debut top 10 with the right song? Like, even some who are not A-list. For lead singles right now I'd say Drake, Eminem (yes, still), Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Beyoncé (with a proper release), Little Mix, Adele.......... and I think those are it tbh. Maybe Justin Timberlake too. I don't think Jess Glynne and Sam Smith are an automatic top 10 debut. Look at what happened to Jessie J and Rita Ora (who had a lot of release pop buzz like Jess) or Emeli Sande and Duffy (who had a first album trajectory similar to Sam Smith). Or even with Katy Perry, who everyone thought was a shoo-in. Cheryl Cole wouldn't even go top 20 in the streaming age. She had super front-loaded #1 songs which I don't think translate to a top 10 debut nowadays.

There are some indications she will carve in eventually. The first one is that Universal's big boss has made clear no act can have exclusives and she is distributed worldwide by Universal. Of course, she is so huge I am pretty sure she can still be an exception but the fact there'll be so much pressure from her WW distributor to make it available on the platform might work. It definitely worked with Drake. Also, she is a worldwide act but she can still gets even bigger in a lot of regions around the globe. She hasn't even done a proper arena tour across Europe yet and she is big in Latin America but can get even bigger. Spotify exposure is a must in those continents. So there ya go.... I mean, of course she is huge enough to shun Spotify and still be successful. Beyoncé does it. But, at the long run, it wouldn't really benefit her and her and her team are usually very business-minded and micromanage every detail.

Taylor Swift is a "girl next door" type and is the biggest of them all in the US. I feel like, right now, Little Mix are definitely among the biggest in the UK. Around the world, however, I don't think they will ever get to that level despite thinking they are super charismatic and talented. The reason for that, imo, is that their music is very teenybopper and, even when they try to chase current trends, they are always a bit late. In the UK, they are huge because they have full media support and people know them through the press and TXF but I don't think they'll ever get radio support around the world, which they'd need to get big. Like, I find comparisons with 5H tiresome and pointless most of the time but 5H sound is much more appropriate for top 40 radio around the world and are very in line with current trends (Worth It; Work From Home) so that's why they gotten so much airplay. Also, when it comes to boybands vs. girlbands, they have the same public (girls) but boyband sales are driven by passion imo so they get huge really fast and fizzle out somewhat fast too. Girlbands' success, on the other hand, happen when people truly connect with the girls so it may take awhile longer for them to get familiar but, once it clicks, people are more attached to them imo. Also, girlbands tend to attract bigger gay fanbase and I feel like the gay public is really faithful.

Stooshe, Neon Jungle, Girls Can't Catch, etc. were never properly successful, they aren't even comparable. They didn't had short shelf lives, they had no shelf lives at all. Spice Girls are also a really drastically different case (and they never had a 4th era). When girl groups are properly successful, they don't have short shelf lives at all. Sugababes were huge in their 4th era (Taller In More Ways); Girls Aloud reached their peak in their 4th/5th era also (GH/Tangled Up/Out of Control). The Saturdays were pretty stable throughout most of their career (although their sales were always mediocre, bar their first album). Anyway, I am not trying to dismiss Little Mix success. I think what they achieved is hugely impressive. But girl groups -- when successful -- tend to have long shelf lives (compared to fellow bubblegum pop acts).

Not really (when it comes to girl bands). The UK market always had successful girl groups with somewhat decent shelf life (unlike other Western markets).

I don't know, I feel like girl groups have larger shelf life than boybands. Girls Aloud come to mind. Sugababes also took awhile to reach their peak. Even The Saturdays lasted for awhile and had different peaks/buzz despite their limited commercial success. While highly impressive, I don't find their trajectory particularly unique.

Harry Styles definitely does not need it and I am pretty sure he want to distance himself from 1D and the sinking ship that is TXF with his huge Hollywood movie coming and all. Liam and Niall are not on good terms with Cowell. I couldn't imagine Zayn in it either but he is still somewhat associated with SYCO (it was part of his deal to leave the band) so maybe.... All 1D boys, except for Louis, are obviously desperate to cut their SYCO/1D ties and appearing on TXF makes absolutely no sense for them marketing-wise. Plus, their first solo single will have huge buzz either way so it's not like they'd need The X Factor exposure. I can imagine Emeli, Louisa, Little Mix, 5H, James Arthur and Olly. Also, Global acts to ensure Capital FM support to SYCO acts. I doubt acts such as Drake (who literally never performs on TV, much less on cheesy TV shows such as TXF) will be on the show but hot newcomers (i.e.: Shawn Mendes; Zara Larsson) are a given imo. I am pretty sure this had more to do with Bieber not wanting to do the show due to scheduling reasons than Simon wanting to ensure a 1D #1. He would never pass up a performance by such an A-list act. Plus, as someone mentioned, he had huge acts with similar release dates several times (notably, Little Mix and Ellie Goulding).

Being fair, Apple Music was on its second week back then. It probably has a bigger market share now, although I'm sticking with Spotify. And regarding Coldplay, they are against free streaming on the first few weeks. They made it available to premium streaming services but not Spotify because they denied their request to make it available only for Premium users.

LMAO @ people crusading against streaming. It's 2015. Streaming is legal, many pay for it and it's the preferable method of consuming music to millions. It is a completely legitimate way of measuring a song's popularity and profitability and it'll only grow bigger and bigger while digital sales will keep falling. Yup. Ellie had huge support from all power players in the industry from day 1. She was prepped and primed for super-stardom, had won both the BBC Sound of 2010 and the BRIT Critics' Choice and "Starry Eyed" was hammered down by the radio. I mean, it's pretty obvious she had stellar promo, otherwise she wouldn't debut straight at the top. Of course, now she's bigger than ever -- she couldn't have afforded Max Martin and Greg Krustin otherwise -- and her promotion is on "international A-list star" level so yeah... those are lackluster results. Although she is a consistent seller so there's still hope... and as I am sure it has been said already in this thread, if the album doesn't pick up, she'll just run back to the studio, re-do the whole thing and put it out as a re-release.

He'll be in the US promoting his album hardcore and if he had pre-taped his performance we'd probably have heard something by now. And I don't know about 1D either.... Surely, if they were on this week they'd had announced it already since they have a huge fanbase and it'd be a very good opportunity to cause some buzz (which the X Factor really needs). So yeah, I find it unlikely they'll be on this week, but who knows. I agree Jess Glynne is the safest and most logical bet.
