I received a fairly detailed explanation of the chart management of APC-stats. The original document is in Dutch, but I have tried best to translate into English. >> The compositional process of the Euro 200 is quite complex variety of reasons. Over 6 years ago when we started the chart we were given some problems. As showed not every member of the European Union have their own chart based on sales. Learned from the mistakes of Billboard, but a well known company in this area, we decided not to base the chart on absolute numbers. That means in the extreme case of a track might be sold 100,000 times in Europe and yet is not # 1. The British hit parade and to a lesser extent the German-would provide the list is very dominant in our eyes and gives a false impression of the degree of popularity of a track in the entire European Union. The main objective of the chart is in fact a balanced, consistent and trendsetting image to provide the European consumer, entertainment and music industry. The lack of sales lists, especially in the Eastern European states, did decided us to work with airplay. Criterion is that there is an adequate supply of participating stations to ensure diversity. In some countries, including Poland, are just album sales lists. For our Polish charter, we already used the album chart. Since April 2009 we do so for the most important charts in Europe. This methodology has been largely chosen to ensure that each country has a broad musical picture. Initially it was never the intention of APC-stats to publish the national music charts, but at the request of several radio stations in Europe we are doing so. Initially the Polish and Portuguese charts and then Belgium, Spain, Bulgaria etc. The fact that we compose music pictures by country gives us the opportunity to compare them with each other and included them in the EURO 200. The additional allocation for Airplay and album sales is very different from country to country. It is clear that for the large states like Germany, France and England virtually no airplay data and additional album information is used. For other states, with no sales lists the proportion airplay and album sales are any larger. Our database has calculated the percentage breakdown for the past week for you. Physical Sales & downloads: 75.7% Airplay: 15.4% Additional Album Sales: 8.9% These percentages may vary slightly each week. But you can conveniently assume that the sales ratio of 75% and 25% for the other two indicators. We know that some people use the last two indicators utterly reject. Our friends at Billboard Airplay figures and still use the compilers of the Foundation Dutch Top 40, too. They use as a fourth indicator the Continuous Music Research (CMO). It is regrettable that on the forums people often propositions posited that violate the truth, but that is no different. Often they do not know enough about the method of compiling the charts. To me a clean job to answer these questions as chart manager of EURO 200. I do hope this contribution sufficient information and hope that if there are any questions on your discussion partners, they should contact the chart management. Okay Ash. Thank you for your extensive reaction. Although I still agree with the philosophy of APC-stats, you certainly have some issues that could improve the system. I'll definitely ask for information about the airplay and album data and how they are reflected in the chart. I sent your post to them. I am not aware of any aversion to contribute my calls. You have noticed that I think the PDS & AAS system is an excellent system to measure the popularity of a track. It has always been my intention through my contributions to show that there are alternative charts. :rolleyes:

So a discussion leads to nothing when somebody don't agree with you. That's an interesting point of view. In Egypt lives a guy who thinks the same........(joke)! I never said "official charts" are bad. The Euro 200 however uses these charts I suppose. They add airplay because they find it an important indicator, however it could be influenced by the record companies. In the Netherlands is this kind of activity illegal. Radio stations can receive heavy fines above the media authorities. The airplay data from over 1500 radio stations (which draws from Euro 200) is an important indicator of the popularity of a track. The radio is listened to by millions of people and strengthen the collective musical experience. Pity is that many stations working with music producers, so the contribution from the DJ is minimized. Concerning album tracks: They've been added just because of the downloads. The two most downloaded tracks are counted for the chart, as I told you earlier. It's a fair system I suppose. They have developed a system which shows the popularity of a track. The need to show album-, sales, download-, and airplay-charts seperatly isn't necessary anymore I suppose. They create a chart that gives everyone in one view a picture of the popularity of a track. The Dutch top 40 uses a similar system, however that chart is NOT the official Dutch chart it's far out the most popular one in The Netherlands (The "official" chart is compiled by GFK). Such a system is for chart analysts perhaps less interesting but more for music consumers. Do you really think that the compilers of the Euro 200 and other charts they make, every week by throwing dice to determine where each track is in the charts? There is a clear philosophy. There you can agree or not. Innovative in any case. Instead of appreciating, you come no further than the word "fake". By the way you can't verify the "official" charts anyway. We don't have access to that information, and importantly, you do not know how the information is created. We must assume that information is gathered and processed by their own rules. The Euro 200 is clear about their rules. I guess these charts made by APC-stats are an addition to buzzjack and give a clear picture of the musicscene. It's a way of experience I guess. There's much to say for your opinion, that's clear, but my opinion has supoporters too. I think it is important to know what you want with a chart. A chart for broadcast must meet different requirements than a list of the record industry. Both are related to targets. The trick is to put them on a balanced way and to compare the two interests together. So that gives another dimension to the concept of official charts. Concerning the post on the French chart thread following: I only wanted to make a statement that the add of downloads to the French "official" chart makes it more in line with the French National Top-50. As it looks now has "Mr. Euphorique Mubarak" my reasoned criticism of the French chart removed for the second time. It seems that particular users of this site avoid the discussion on this particular discussion site. They prefer a "chat" about the #29 position of Britney Spears or the #1 position from bla bla bla. The site would be a lot more interesting if there could be a discussion based on arguments. So I start "official" (it's a nice word) with the French National Top-50 Chart.

Quote: IFPI represents the recording industry worldwide, with a membership comprising some 1400 record companies in 66 countries and affiliated industry associations in 45 countries. IFPI's mission is to promote the value of recorded music, safeguard the rights of record producers and expand the commercial uses of recorded music in all markets where its members operate. They compose the charts thus meet the demands of this club. The interests of consumers and the entertainment industry are completely ignored. The Euro 200 uses the soundscans from over 1500 European radiostations (see the rules) I am almost 30 years working in the radio business and had the necessary experience with the record industry. Believe me, there are four large companies who want to control what we hear and see. Airplay charts and additional album sales are a welcome addition to incomplete information from the record industry. (read IFPI) To compile a chart out of 4 indicators instead of 2 (sales & downloads) gives a more complete picture of the European music scene. That's my opinioin. The discussion of "official" charts is irrelevant. Keep on doin' your hobby guys! B)
