  1. Genuine question but why do people use the expression 'vinyls' these days? How exactly did that come about? I mean, in the record collecting community the plural of vinyl was always simply vinyl but since the format has become popular again it has changed. Anyone know how or why this came about?

  3. Nothing to do with history books as such, as I remember the whole thing. Perhaps I condensed the timeline a little though a miss-recollection and for me and all my mates reacting so strongly from day one. The episode aired in Dec '92 and yes he did win the Grammy in '93 but that event was held in February before the fallout really began to hit home and the winner was likely already decided before the organisers heard about it. Bobby Brown dropped him from his tour in early Feb and although you are correct that he managed to have the 2 hits in 1993, very few promoters were willing to book his shows and by the mid year he was forced to make a public apology. His Grammy winning album itself sold poorly both in the US and UK, for a winner and his late 1993 follow up failed to chart in either territory. After one further contractual obligation he was dropped by his label having achieved no further successes. Ask yourself why would Epic decide to drop a rising artist with a double Grammy win and a high profile a little over 12 months after the show aired. They wouldn't normally but he was basically poison by this time as the fallout had only snowballed. Where The Word was a niche late show for drunks and night owls and not seen by loads of viewers, news and details of the comments took a little longer to gather momentum than they do in these days of the internet. I strongly remember though that every time the re-issues of Mr Loverman or Housecall came on radio and TV at least one person would bring up the story and as more and more people heard about it and the knowledge spread his reputation fell faster and faster.
  4. I got rid of 2 large boxes of compilation CDs a couple of years ago as they were just taking up room and I only bought most of them as they were useful for when I used to set music quizzes - back in the days before Spotify and the like made it really easy. At the time I had over 3,000 CDs plus about the same in CD singles. I probably got rid of a couple of hundred but I also took them all out of the jewel cases and keep them in a slim plastic sleeve now, as it saves so much space. I don't buy CDs anymore unless it's for an artist who I am particularly invested in and they need the financial support. That's the same with my vinyl. I don't play them but I will buy every version for an artist that warrants it.
  5. Actually no, the one you're thinking of was at Long Beach in '83. He only managed to win from 17th on the grid this time.
  6. Didn't Britney basically retire from music though? I don't exactly follow her closely but I understood she packed it in after her hugely successful Piece of Me tour and just before what would have been the highly lucrative Las Vegas residency. Walking away at that point doesn't seem like a fall to me.
  7. In the early 1990's, Shabba Ranks was the world's biggest Reggae star, a double Grammy winner and the fastest rising new artist on the scene, with people falling over themselves to get him on their show. Then he exposed himself as a vile homophobe on Channel 4's The Word and was promptly dropped from his world tour, ditched by his label and the world cancelled him so hard that few have had such bigger falls . He limped out a further couple of poorly received albums and then promptly disappeared down the toilet he belonged in.
  8. Now you're making me feel old! I agree about Decline & Fall. I just haven't warmed to it. Hiding in Plain Sight isn't quite as bad as I first felt but it's nothing to get excited about. Nicky's vocals have certainly got better over the years. He was terribly flat in the beginning

I also thought that Verstappen's first penalty was harsh. 5 seconds for that any day but then Johnny Herbert was one of the stewards so that made perfect sense once I knew that. Def a 10 second for the second infraction. Felt a bit sorry for Perez. He should have qualified better and he's clearly underperforming but being forced to plod around at the back in a severely compromised car is no way to run what's probably your last home GP. Shame about losing a Ferrari 1-2 as well but to be fair Norris didn't make any mistakes this weekend. Nice for Sainz to get another win too. Probably his last.
  10. Backing vocals are by Lana McDonagh
  11. Very much has an Echo & the Bunnymen vibe to it

Finally got around to catching this after being recommended it by a friend who was at Frightfest. It's frankly quite brilliant and a few minor, personal quibbles aside it just about pulls off the ending. Demi Moore has never been an actor whose work I have enjoyed but she really nails it here and regardless of the likely snub come awards time, it is an Oscar worthy performance full of subtlety, flamboyance and a raw physicality. There's more than a nod to a stack of classic films, many already mentioned here but particularly Cronenberg (both actually) Kubrick and John Frankenheimer's Seconds, plus there's a touch of Frankenstein, a LOT of Jekyll and Hyde, plenty from Society, and others such as the The Fly, The Thing, Carrie and Freaks. The screenplay is brilliant and deservedly won the award there and the score is nicely done too. The SFX too are comparable to those of the legend that is Rob Bottin. As for my minor quibbles, it is kind of predictable plotwise and wasn't as funny as I was led to believe. It's a tad overlong as the ending drags a bit even if the first hour and a half flys by, and whilst I absolutely understand the need and agree it's well done, I found my attention wandering to my phone during some of the Sue workout scenes. It was boring when Eric Prydz did it and I felt the same here. Plus the suspension of disbelief gets a challenging run for the finale. That said, it's an audacious film that shows there's plenty of mileage still there to take well worn ideas and give them a refreshing spin even while using familiar tropes. With a solid two for two in her filmography Coralie Fargeat is clearly a rich talent to keep a close eye on.

I'm still intrigued by the rumours that have been saying Perez's future has already been decided and that they're waiting until after Mexico before announcing he's out
  15. Great, I will add Delirious and Starfish & Coffee to the playlist tonight

Russell was ahead indeed but because Bottas had already ceded the corner by the time Russell moved across to the outside he's therefore forced him off track. As for Verstappen the difference between yesterday and Las Vegas is that at COTA the car was deemed under control - misjudging the line does not automatically mean out of control - but in Vegas Max was determined to have lost full control due to the slippery surface, hence a penalty. If that T1 L1 incident had have played out the same in 10 laps time I suspect Verstappen gets a penalty

I can't yet comment on the Sprint and I'll have to look back at the event as I try to ignore them as much as I can, but in the race Russell does clearly force Bottas wide when he had no reason to, Valterri had already backed out of the move, so I agree that was entirely justified as a penalty. I agree that there's an exploit around the rules on your second point but that's a rules problem and not a stewarding one. It's worth remembering that drivers and teams helped to set these rules too. It's pretty clear some drivers know what they can and can't do more than others. Opening laps are always viewed much more leniently though and every driver takes advantage of that because they know it. Almost no-one ever gets a penalty for anything there as long as it's not egregious. However, I don't agree Verstappen forced Norris pff as he was clearly off the throttle and full lock at the time but most importantly Max was ahead at the apex on T1 so broke no rules. It was identical to that late race moment where Norris broke the rules by making it in to an overtake. I don't see anything in today's race that I take issue with, having seen repeated angles of the areas I initially thought were questionable.
  18. Jacked has been my favourite track for years but I have to admit I've found Warplane to be the first thing she's done that I find underwhelming

When it goes online, check out Anthony Davidson's analysis of the penalties around Norris/Verstappen and Russell/Bottas. I'm not certain those are the ones you're thinking of but both decisions are completely correct according to the rules. I initially thought the one for Russell was harsh but actually was right on further viewing. The Sky team's (Button, Davidson, Patrick) conclusion basically boils down to Verstappen understands the rules better than anyone else and the circuit's need tweakingwith gravel/grass to prevent this being an issue

That was a textbook example of how to defend against a faster car. And a Ferrari 1-2 is a great result

COTA really suits both the Red Bull and Max's style, not so much Perez though, as you can see from his grid position Additionally Red Bull identified their issues back at Monza and have improved the handling slightly since. Ferrari look strong here too.
  22. Quite a few there I'm familiar with and they're all fairly decent so that's a good start
  23. Fangtasy has been announced as their next single.
  24. I agree about '92 in general, though it did have its moments. Australia was one - 20 laps of Senna hounding Mansell for the lead until they collided, with Berger shadowing Patrese right behid them. Then as Berger fell away Patrese retired leaving Berger to fend off a menacing looking Schumacher. Weirdly I can recall that in great clarity but can't remember Canada this year that well at all.
