 That's pretty much like declaring war on Italy.

Renault have finally confirmed their decision not to build a power unit from 2026 onwards. This looks very much like the first step to a complete withdrawal from the sport to me. Andretti should make them an offer before anyone else does.

I love Mother's Little Helper. Shame it didn't make the top 20 but it's done pretty well for a non single. It was my wild card only because I knew no-one else would pick it and I assumed somebody absolutley HAD to nominate You Can't Always Get What You Want. Pretty sure the latter would have been somewhere round the top 10.

It's definitely among their better singles from the '80s and one of the few from that period I actually have in my library and the video is very memorable too, but for they've done many that a much better.

Thanks very much for the kind words! I can see the Big Country comparison with Magnum now you mention it, but yeah Big Country, for me at least, aren't quite in the heavy rock spectrum. Same with Mr Mister - interestingly cryptic comment on them too. Mind you I have always remembered Kyrie far more than And yes - regarding your spoilered comment, as a card carrying '80s who cited that band as their favourite from 1986 to 1990, that was never going to appear in this compilation. Although to be fair I'm something of a purist when it comes to that particular genre and have had a lengthy discussions of it that even qualifies.

Disc 1 - 1980-1986 - . Kicking off with three absolute titans of the genre - AC/DC, Motorhead and Ozzy, who led where the new breed of Saxon, Iron Maiden, Girlschool and others would follow as British bands dominated the early years. Those early '80s were all spandex and leather, yet as the middle of the decade arrived arrived the US presented two new styles, one a more commercial style with big Pop hooks that became known variously as Glam Metal or Pop Metal. Or perhaps Cock Rock and Poodle Metal if you weren't in approval. The second was Thrash Metal, inspired by the then prevalent New Wave of British Heavy Metal they played a harder faster and more aggressive style. Where the '70s had seen Birmingham as the birthplace of true Heavy Metal, the mid '80s saw California, specifically L.A.'s Sunset Strip as the home of the now fast rising Glam Metal scene and San Francisco's Bay Area leading the way with Thrash Metal. This discs charts the dominance of the British sound in the first half of the decade, punctuated by a few huge US hits with Van Halen dictating the future US sound. Whilst the British inspired sound of rises in the mid '80s. Thusly, Thrash's 'Big 4' of Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer round of the first disc and can easily be skipped for those with more melodic tastes. Disc 2 - 1985-1989 - Meanwhile back in the more mainstream Rock scene, post Live Aid, the world embraced stadium bands and the Metal scene was no exception. Big catchy choruses were in and Metal competed healthily for space in the charts with the likes of Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, a Run DMC revitalised Aerosmith, and Guns N Roses, who some argue were so good they helped kill their own scene by being too hard to compete with. By 1987 Rock fans were buying huge volumes of albums and bands were having huge hits the world over, yet even as early as 1985, in California's deep underground, some Rock fans were increasingly disconnected from the hedonistic and decadent lifestyles of the platinum selling megastars seen on MTV and especially in the notorious documentary 'The Decline of Western Civilisation II: The Metal Years. As such a new style began to emerge, led by a few notable names breaking through - Jane's Addiction, Faith No More and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all played with a rawer, less polished sound that in years to come would become known to all under the catch-all term Alternate Rock. Meanwhile in the Pacific North West something else was brewing in their wake. A change was coming, and less than a year after it's heyday, Glam Metal was about to implode under the weight of its own hairspray. This second disc showcases the dominance of predominantly US stadium Rock and Glam Metal before the end of the decade sees a handful of bands predict the sound of '90s Rock.

It's long been speculated that Lawson's contract stipulated 5 races this season and with time running out the rumours of Daniel leaving now have only grown. I thought yesterdays race nicely highlighted the difference between the two title contenders. Verstappen quietly got on with it, drove consistently despite a difficult car and brought it home in the position needed. Norris had the pace, was only too keen to demonstrate it and despite no pressure at all still managed to make a couple of unforced errors. He was fortunate neither were costly. If he is to seriously mount a challenge he needs to stamp that out and drive smarter. He needs to be remember 'the secret is to win going as slowly as possible'

This is the official line - 'RB team principal Laurent Mekies claimed they arranged Ricciardo’s fastest lap bid because he may not drive for them again after this weekend. “Given this may have been Daniel’s last race, we wanted to give him the chance to savour it and go out with the fastest lap,” he said.' It does however mean that Ricciardo holds the circuit's lap record, so there is that

I've tried but I can't see any way in which Lando was unlucky. He wa spotentially on a decent lap when Sainz crashed but others were more impacted by that (particularly Verstappen) and with over 8 mins to go it was unlikely to have been a significantly fast lap anyway. Did I miss something else

McLaren have confirmed they will not run their 'controversial' mini DRS flexi-wing on the cars again this year. This comes as the FIA were expected to ban it however, since we're passed the point of its greatest benefit (Monaz, Baku etc) it shouldn't really bother them too much. In other news Mohammed Ben Sulayem has suggested the FIA will be cracking down on the broadcasting of driver's swearing on the radio and other instances. Verstappen has been ordered to do some 'public work' due to his use of the f-word during yesterdays press conference. The swearing thing really bugs me. We're talking about an individual in a high pressure, high risk situation, sat alone in his car with only his engineer to communicate with, letting off the occasional swear word, and someone else choosing to broadcast it to the world (and it censored anyway), yet they're taking issue with the drivers as much as anyone else. Let's face it mosy people in that situation would be swearing as some point. Secondly, you can turn on almost any Premier League and hear the players swearing and maybe 30,000 people questioning the referee's self pleasuring habits on any weekend. The grief the driver's are getting for the odd swear word is ludicrous. Swearing it the press conference I get the issue, as you know you're on screen but Verstappen was directly quoting himself in repsonse to a question asked. A simple please mind your language should be enough. It's also worth remembering that a lot of foreign drivers learn English when they arrive hear and much of it is picked up from the mechanics and team personnel which leads to swearing being among the earliest words learned and therefore second nature. As for the race this weekend, so far Red Bull appear to have no grip, Mercedes no pace and Norris and Leclerc are over half a second faster than anyone else so it looks to be between them.

I'm more surprised at the omission of Roxy Music than anything else. An entire generation cited them as hugely influential. Practically all of the Post Punk bands, the New Romantics and any 'arty' band have said they owe a debt to them. Maybe the younger generations only know the later Sophisti-Pop hits and not the really important stuff.

Imagination really is a strange inclusion. They were really only popular for a few years and not even that big. 3 top ten hits and two top 20 albums is all of note. If it was a public vote I suspect Leee John was very busy that week.
