Vulnerable, messy & bratty: The pop girlies having a moment
Sounds like modern Pop is having it's Grunge moment

Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own feels out of place to me and I'd happily bin off Beautiful Day myself, but otherwise probably the obvious contenders

Naff Lyrics - indulge your love of old odd lyric silliness
As it's written by Springsteen there's always more to it and a curly-wurly is apparently a New Jersey expression for a fancy car. Many of the lyrics actually make sense when you look in to them

Ignore. Made a mistake

The one stop definitely looked possible, if remote, given the numbers Sainz was posting in his first stint

Yeah I know why it happened. It's just ridiculous how many viewers/voters did not understand what they were watching unfold

Shaking my head at Hamilton winning driver of the day despite being out thought, out raced and out played in every way by his teammate today. And he did not look happy afterwards

Personally, I wouldn't say it was a waste of time. A brief bit of background info on each track helps encourage others to engage with the discussion more. As an aside, I would've been happy to help with the write ups and the same offer applies to any future rates.

Great to see Sparks pop up in there. Not in my top faves but a very worthy addition. As for Talking Heads... Way back in 1987 when I started buying CDs, their album Fear of Music was the first I went out and bought. It remains as one of my top 10 albums of all time.

That whole area of the Ardennes is beautiful and the great thing is that much of the old circuit is still intact and can be driven on including the legendary Masta Kink - the one Jackie Stewart called 'the most dangerous corner in the world'. Fancy the 15K run?

Mercury Prize 2024
Of course. When I suggested Bob Vylan should be nominated, I completely forgot that the artist/label has to pay for the privilege of being allowed as a nominaton. And now I remember why the list is pretty bland every year.

Kraftwerk were absolutely amazing. Their '70s/'80s output from Autobahn to Computer World is up their with the likes of Bowie for a flawless run. Trans Europe Express is a phenomenal album and their output from that decade is beyond influential. They're one of those bands that, the more you understand electronic music and the more you listen to them, the more you realise that they are almost as influential as The Beatles.

Bullet and Bad are proper U2 classics. Elevation is pretty naff meanwhile.

2024 Formula One Season
I've walked around it from the other side of the fencing. We did so in 1998 during free practice and there was a section out by Stavelot that had little more than a thin wire fence - literally posts and wire of the sort to deter sheep, not even barbed wire, and only a few metres from the fence to the actual track and this side of the fence was a small stream and a few shrubs between there and the pathway. It was so close to the track and so undefended that you could easily breach and be on the track in seconds. Thankfully, there was the deterrent of armed police with dogs but still.... When Hakkinen came by on a quick run it was quite a moment and you could really feel the power those cars had. I'll probably never be as close as that again to one driven in anger. It's probably changed loads since then but I wholeheartedly recommend if there's only one track you go to make it that

Still No 1? How the music charts lost their lustre
I used to listen to the charts religiously during my younger years, throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s regardless of whether I liked much in the list (often not) but it always seemed like something important to be aware of and pretty much everybody knew what was at the top. The addition of downloads didn't change that either but for some reason sometime in 2010 I just lost interest. I don't quite know why either. It wasn't because of the music really, although there was little I cared for in the the top 40, that had often been the case anyway. I just no longer seemed to care what was happening in the chart and whilst I can recognise every number one from the late 50s onwards (regular music quizzer too - both setting and entering for years) once I get to 2010 I only know a few here and there for each year. And it seems in the wider world that's very much the case. I work with people of all ages and have two 20 something kids, one who is particularly obsessive over music, but neither have any interest in the charts. For that reason I can see exactly what the article is saying. I don't think the charts are any better or worse - how could it be it's just a data list at heart - but it does seem that it's no longer an important part of everyday society. It's like going to Church these days, everybody knows it's still there but hardly anyone does it anymore.

2024 Formula One Season
The first driver to be younger than me and win a race was Ralf Schumacher in 2001 but the first time I had a moment over a driver's age was when Rubens Barrichello entered the sport in '93. He and I were both 20 years old at the time

Rumours continue to suggest that Adrian Newey is close to signing for Aston Martin. Apparently the offer is worth £84M over four years. Also, fun trivia time - Following Sunday's victory, Oscar Piastri is the first driver born in the 21st century to win a Grand Prix.

2024 Formula One Season
The F1 comission has unanimously voted against extending the point scoring positions in a race down to 12th. It will remain that only the first 10 finishers will score points. They have also agreed to increase the minimum weight limit from 798Kg to 800Kg for 2025. This will allow the driver weight allowance to be raise from 80Kg to 82Kg - the first time this has been raised in 5 years. A further extension to the amount of testing allowed has been agreed - from 3 days this year to 9 days from 2026, mainly due to the new regulations. The decisions will not be official until approved by the World Motor Sport Council.

Portishead's Dummy is a fantastic album and is a must for any essential '90s albums list. The follow up was good but I just couldn't get on with the Third album

Glad you liked it Julian. :D Numb was potentially my wildcard too but I just waited long enough to see if anybody nominated it and I could pick something else, so thanks for that too. There's definitely an Industrial influence on it and it stood out as quite different for them at the time. It was also a rather unusual choice as the first single from Zooropa and came in the rare format (at the time) of a video single. And one of the few where The Edge 'sings' lead vocals.

Personally I much prefer the original version of The Sweetest Thing. I find the single version quite annoying. Staring at the Sun is very underrated though
