I think you've hit the nail on the head about timing. I also think that it all depends on what time of year you release the follow-up album - Ive realised artists who are established (Beyonce, Robbie Williams, Take That, Sugababes (Not the recent line-up lol) release around the autumn/winter time to maximise on sales. What lesser known artists should do is release their album in the early spring/summer time as they can get more of the year to get established. A good example of this is Paolo Nutini - He didnt release his follow up at the end of the year but in the summer - and now has Two 1 million selling albums. The fact that the middle of the year is a quiet time for albums - They should make maximimum use of it.
