  1. "Out Of Control" LOVE it - there are so many great parts to that track and the Chemical Brothers are one of the few artists that I have loved all the way from when I was a teenager in the late 90s/early 2000s through to the current day. They've had two number 1s on my personal chart since I started it in late 1999; "Star Guitar" and "Galvanize".

Thanks for sharing with us Tony, it has been a fascinating trip down memory lane for me (and I'm sure others). Would love to see you do a 2000s one (so I can compare your taste with my actual chart of the time) though from 2006 onwards it gets a bit difficult because many of the best songs didn't actually make the T75 and when downloads come in 2007 I found a huge decrease in % of songs that I was charting concurrently with UK Top 75 hits. These days it is rare to have more than 2 T75 hits in my chart at the same time. :(

Also, I did expect you to put "Adagio for Strings" as your last #1 - it was held off #1 for me by Len's "Steal My Sunshine" (my first ever #1).

Aye. All I need is about 6 or 7 songs per month to keep my Top 3s going.

You may not have heard the last of Adagio for Strings. :D

I like all of those, Alex, except Womanizer. Which I really hate.

You're welcome. I enjoyed doing it. Thanks for commenting, thanks also to Doctor Blind, Dandy*, SKOB, Sinner, Mattias and others who commented. It made it easier to carry on.

I think I'll be doing a 00s one but I only have Musicweek scans up to the end of 2007 so I'm not sure how complete 2008 or 2009 would be. I'll probably forget lots of good stuff from those years

The Charlatans - My Beautiful Friend

    3 Weeks

And now at the end of my favourite decade for music we have a band that thus far never troubled this chart very much. This is is my favourite Charlatans song by far. It has a snaking guitar line that hooked me instantly.

Perhaps an unremarkable song to end the decade on but that's the way it is.

Blur - No Distance Left to Run

    3 Weeks

Blur were amazing at sad songs. One of their best sad songs, No Distance Left To Run was the pick of the three singles taken from 13 - it should really have been Trim Trabb which would have been a worthy single of the year. Coffee + TV was good (I killed it by overplaying). I never liked Tender.

    This is heartbreaking.

A second one weeker for one of THE bands of 99. Anthemecism a-go-go. Google Chrome says anthemecism isn't a word :(

I can't decide if this or Driftwood is better. Whichever it is they're both better than Why Does it Always Rain on Me? which I've always found overrated.

The Chemical Brothers - Out of Control

    4 Weeks

Also closing their 90s account with an number 1 single (in this chart, at least) is the Chemical Brothers featuring Bernard Sumner from New Order. A propelling track which twists itself into a fractured New Order song with the introduction of some characteristic Sumner guitar work in a punishing but ecstatic breakdown.

Their last very good single (I'm reluctant to call it great for some reason) and a stand out on Head Music - there weren't many :(.

Watching the video again it strikes me that Brett Anserson has a very Sharleen Spiteri way of walking, or maybe it just looks like a Texas video.

As some DJ joked at the time, the intro harpsichord sounds like when the bad guy turns up on The Smurfs. :D

Anyway, this was my first taste of Destiny's Child (and to the term automobills). I love the sparsity of the production. And the sass.

    Orbital - Nothing Left

The best track(s) on their 1999 album The Middle of Nowhere. They weren't shy of opera (apparently this is the plural of opus) and this is their last proper one coming in at over 16 minutes.

The instant highlight on This Is My Truth, they would leave it to be the fourth single. It would easily have fitted on Everything Must Go with its torrential strings and eurphoric "in-between, in-between, in-between, in-between" climax.

I got very emotional when I saw them play it live in 1999.
