Warren G ft. Nate Dogg - Regulate

I'm not a huge hip-hop fan but sometimes it hits me where it needs to. Regulate is effortlessly cool and great for chilling to when I want to feel a little bit gangsta (who am I fooling?)

    Manic Street Preachers - Faster

Like a red-hot branding iron to the face, Faster is as caustic as anything they've ever done but not without head-spinning melody. Whereever James summons up the taut, angry, twisted post-punk barrage of fury from after the somewhat funky Gold Against the Soul, who knows?

As a taster for the intimidatingly grim Holy Bible album it could not have done a better job. Richie's lyrics spoke of high-brow intelligentsia among whom he placed himself. Every second of this is essential to my life.

A very, very underrated song from Milla Jovovich could never stand a chance of dislodge Faster. It should have been huge.

The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)

    2 Weeks :o

The jump from the Experience album to Jilted Generation was fairly unpredictable and to preface the album with this - (for many, a contender for greatest dance song ever) was a smack in the face for fans expecting more tinny cartoon-rave.

The usual amalgam of beats, synths, samples and killer riff was all in place and nearly 20 years on it still thrills.

In 1994 many songs didn't really get as many weeks as they warranted and this is no exception. The rest of the year is filled with stone cold classic songs at number 1 (with perhaps one arguably not so classic but we'll have that argument later)

Another song that just makes my insides turn to mush. The lyrics are frank reflection on loneliness and hopelessness. That final chorus is so powerful. One of their very best songs, in my opinion.

And to another movie theme. I never understood the fascination with Bruce Springsteen - a lot of my friends who are really into music worship him - but this song just pulls at my heart-strings.

The part where he sings ain't no angel going to greet me, it's just you and I my friend.....is just

The main theme from the film The Piano could not be anything less than breathtaking, and The Heart Asks Pleasure First didn't shy away from that responsibility. Michael Nyman is more associated with orchestral music but this ravishing, enthralling piece is the best thing I've heard from him.

In the year I fell in love with piano music (thanks to Tori's Under the Pink) I couldn't get enough of this amazing piece.

  7. I intentionally avoided the YTD threads all year so I could be relatively surprised when they count down the best sellers of the year. And now we might not even get a countdown  :(

You deserve some sort of award for that. I dont even care for the charts that much and I can't help but visit those threads.

    The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm

    6 Weeks

A song that the word magnificent was invented for. The build for the second chorus makes me take flight. When Billy sings "burn, burn, burn" the dramatic release of the strings, kettle drums and bells is something that reminds me of why I love music so much. I know his voice isn't for everyone but I like the tones of yearning that it brings to Disarm.

Both Disarm and Bluebeard are highlights of the year and suppress Suede's Stay Together into third place. However, it out performs many of the number 1s of 1994.

  9. But if she had produced the 'Best Female Album' then surely she should be the one awarded, seeing as this award is based on the quality of the music? I don't understand your logic.

This has always been my stance on things. How could the female who produced the best album not be the best female?

You dont need to dominate all 12 months of the year to be the best female of the year. It should be purely down to album quality.

    Cocteau Twins - Bluebeard

    1 Week

Isn't it strange how sometimes amazing music seems to echo what's selling higher up in the charts and yet goes unnoticed by the masses? The Cranberries managed to spend most of Feb and March of 1994 in the Top 20 with Linger but Bluebeard hardly registered at all. It is their most directly accessible single, in my opinion. I certainly loved it instantly and it's characteristically multi-layered structure is enchanting and ravishing in equal measure.

Far from some of their abstract work, it peaks and falls in easily identifiable sections. It did seem their best chance at a hit and is indeed their second biggest hit in the UK charts. A travisty.

It only spent one week at number one in this rundown because of an upcoming landmark single (for me, anyway).

Well, well, well...if only all of their "4th single of an album"s were as good as this. In fact, it's been quite a while since ANY of their singles managed to be so down-heartedly amazing. The lines "There is no true love, just a finely tuned jealousy" has to be one of their best couplets.

James' voice is at it's peak for me too.
