Album of the Year Contender: Le Youth - About Us



A second-time appearance for Le Youth here to start us off, following last year's debut album "Reminders". The album alongside a string of loose singles at the start of the year allowed Le Youth in my Top 5 artists of the year in Spotify Wrapped. I did think "Reminders" was a stronger effort overall but this was a lovely follow-up anyhow showing Le Youth is still one of the top players in melodic house. The collaboration with label boss Lane 8 was undeniably the big hit here which will be making appearance in the singles chart.

Album of the Year Contender: Sub Focus - Evolve



A long-awaited solo record from Sub Focus now, with it being his first since 2013 though he also had a collaborative record with Wilkinson in 2020. Sub Focus certainly helped put drum and bass back on the map with 'Ready To Fly' being one of the year's biggest tunes and there's plenty more like it on the album too.

Album of the Year Contender: Grandbrothers - Late Reflections



Grandbrothers are German electronic duo who base their compositions around the grand piano and any sound effects they can make with it. You may recall their track 'What We See' took the title for EOY #1 single in 2021. Following up 'All the Unknown' which wasn't their debut album but the first I'd heard of theirs after discovering them, it's not quite as great as the previous album (which seems to be a theme this year) however works very well as a full length album listen even if there's only a small handful of pieces that work more as standalone singles (see: the 2 songs of theirs that made my top 2). 'North/South' particularly we could see very high up the EOY singles chart though I link to 'Infinite' below as it actually has a visualiser showcasing the cathedral they recorded the album at.

Album of the Year Contender: Tensnake - Stimulate



Another producer who ended up in my top 5 artists on Spotify wrapped thanks to a long string of singles released from this album - Tensnake had been around in my chart from day 1 when 'Coma Cat' was a big track however 2023 was his most prominent year yet. Containing two outstanding nu-disco tracks which will be contending in the EOY singles chart for a top 20 placing. Although containing five top 40 hits, ultimately this does more of the feeling of a singles compilation with the very few album tracks here not being quite so good so I can't really hand the AOTY title to it.

Album of the Year Contender: Disclosure - Alchemy



A bit of a surprise album release here came from Disclosure who announced they'd gone independent and came up with the challenge to produce an album with no guest vocalists or samples. It made for a more cohesive album listen than their previous album, though ultimately didn't produce as many chart hits as there were two songs here that stood out the most. Nothing here I absolutely loved really but I gotta hand it to them for still going strong ten years after their debut.

Album of the Year Runner-Up: Anamē - Beautiful World



Having put out an album as part of Gardenstate two years back, Swedish producer Marcus Schössow left to persue a new project Anamē with a new collaborator. The resulting album is in a similar style to Gardenstate but even better as a whole, an excellent melodic house effort with a big soundscape. It is the sole album here to produce two #1 singles both of which will make high appearances in the singles chart.

Album of the Year: Ram - Wanderlust



A trance masterclass now from Ram who just edges ahead to claim the AOTY title. When it comes to emotive uplifting trance Ram had already proved himself as one of the best so it was great to see him putting out a studio album after many years (I see his last was in 2015 which I missed), with almost every album track standing out enough for my weekly chart. It was also particularly great to see it also released in a mixed version for a non-stop energy album listening experience. The clear highlight is of course 'What Matters' which could be a strong contender in the EOY singles chart.

Wanderlust. Glad this won AOTY, though Beautiful World is a worth winner as well with Peaceful Avenues being somewhere memorable in my head. I'd probably have it as a runner-up or 2nd runner-up, for my unofficial AOTY came from a hardstyle album.

What Matters was one of my favourite BJSC songs this year - look forward to seeing where it'll appear in your full countdown but I should probably give a few more of the songs from that album a listen! Don't think I realised Disclosure had released an album this year, but giving Looking For Love a listen now and it's sounding quite nice, very laid back.

Bringing back the Mainstream 75 this year, we start off with a rare Spanish language hit coming from Bizarrap & Shakira. Bizarrap is a dance producer who'd had quite a few hits overseas but clearly Shakira was needed to get the UK crossover hit and even with the language barrier the lyrics dissing her ex husband gave the song some virality for a few weeks. Certainly a catchy effort from them anyhow.

Luude & Issey Cross collaborated twice in the year, although I wasn't keen on 'Bittersweet Goodbye' their smaller hit 'Oh My' was likewise a minor hit for me too. Assisted by a sample of the classic 'Porcelain' by Moby which isn't such an in your face sample as what Luude had been doing before and since.

A chart revival came this year for 'Dog Days Are Over' cementing it as Florence's signature hit, thanks to a well-placed spot in the latest (and final) Guardians of the Galaxy film. Although it managed to gain a new UK peak it still missed out on a top 20 spot, it's good in a way that it gets to keep that it's one of the biggest songs ever to miss top 20 as part of its legacy. It's certainly worthy of being considered a modern classic anyhow and worth the revisit.

Bringing Missy Elliott back in the chart very briefly we had girl group Flo who were tipped to be the next big thing but the song went as soon as it came and we haven't heard from them since. It's a fun song that surely would've been a top 10 hit if Little Mix had put it out 5 years ago but I guess it's too hard to push a new girlgroup in current day.

PinkPantheress had one big hit this year that will be yet to come, meanwhile this track ended up stalling lowly as it clearly wasn't quite so catered to TikTok audience. 'Mosquito' is a good direction for her to go in anyhow, it's got a cute aesthetic to it.

A good start to this mainstream 75, I think 'Mosquito' is my favourite song to date from PinkPantheress so a shame it didn't become a proper hit. 'Fly Girl' and 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53' were also great top 40 hits and ofc 'Dog Days Are Over' is an all-time classique *.*

Raye had a great year with 'Escapism' continuing to smash (more on that later!), another big dance feature and finally releasing her debut album. 'Flip a Switch' was chosen as the post-album single anyhow which was a standout of the album for being more catchy and upbeat than a lot of the other tracks though still showcasing her strong vocal talent.

A hangover from last year now from Fred Again who landed in my Top 200 with this previously. 'Danielle' is still one of his strongest efforts yet and ought to have been a bigger hit properly but he wasn't quite at the stage where he could easily get top 40 debuts then. Fred has had a very good year with him having four tracks in the Mainstream 75.

What a year Kylie had! Coming back strong with two songs that will make the Top 200 she eventually put out the album 'Tension' which was my favourite pop album of the year. The standout and focus track was this one which briefly placed in the UK chart.

Metro Boomin managed to get a big hit by getting his friends to remake the big 2004 hit 'I Don't Wanna Know', and sure it was a good modern update of the track helped by The Weeknd being a stronger vocalist. 21 Savage is a great replacement for Diddy too.

Another cover version now albeit more controversial on Buzzjack, although for a dance hit it did underperform a fair bit on my chart anyhow. 'Million Dollar Bill' was a great choice of song to revisit anyhow as I hadn't really thought about that song for years and it works for what it is being a lite house uplift. We will hear from vocalist Alex Mills later in the Top 200 too.

Cheating a little bit for the next entry from Tears for Fears as it's hardly a "2023 hit" but hey, it is a classic and I gave it a bit of a revisit after its chart revival. As one of the best 80s songs it's very much deserved seeing its status get further cemented.

Who'd have guessed The Beatles would be having a chart comeback this year eh? Well they are certainly one of the bands of all time who'd have a great deal of songs in my chart of the 60s. 'Now and Then' of course was conceived in the 70s before eventually coming out now and hitting #1 and it's a very strong effort to be considered their final recording as a band.

Chase & Status had a very good year with five titles charting and all making the Mainstream 75. The most recent of these are naturally the lowest with 'Say the Word' and 'Selecta' both in this section. The former was only a low-charting promo single and not one of their strongest efforts meanwhile 'Selecta' is a big energy banger assisted by a sample of Ashanti which could stick around a bit in the new year.

Sandwiched between are Lord Huron whose track was actually a minor hit a good few years ago but came back thanks to TikTok and the song grew on me from the chart resurgence. It's a bit of a subtle indie ballad but quite lovely after a few listens and would've been worthy of a UK top 40 placing if the OCC were a tad more consistent with their chart rules.

One of the most recent songs here now comes from Jack Harlow, a bit of a surprise entry here as I'm not a fan of his and his previous big UK hits didn't do anything for me. Lovin On Me being a big #1 makes a lot of sense though helped by a very catchy sampled hook and Jack's fun white boy persona.

Another recent-ish track which is still growing in the chart now, coming from Zach Bryan who I'd never expected to make a hit here but I can't deny a very well-written duet. The sparse orchestration assists it a fair bit too and ultimately it's a song that for many has been one of the very few country hits worth getting behind.

Another surprise in the year was Skepta now becoming a dance producer and after a handful of non-hits he ended up remixing a classic Amy Winehouse track. Ultimately it's not that essential of a remake so it fell down my chart rather quickly but it is nice to hear Amy's great vocal over a more modern production I guess.

Next up a song that whilst credited to Jazzy, she is probably the least interesting part of it, with the production doing most of the lifting here. Whilst nothing outstanding it does its job as a gym workout song so got a fair few plays that way. Jazzy will be back later of course.

And here's Fred again.. this time teaming with Skrillex on production bringing dubstep back to the chart. Despite the song having very little melody they managed to make it work with the rumbling bassline being the big focus making for a very unique hit song. It's also assisted a lot by the rap from Flowdan (great name, if only I'd thought of it for myself first).

Noah Kahan first-up with a song that could very well appear higher on this list next year as it's still steadily rising the chart. His style of folk-pop isn't really to my taste for the most part with the exception of this song which naturally became his biggest hit. It's very well done song which is perfect for this time of year too and a breath of fresh air in the chart - UK #1 in January surely awaits it.

Time for another dance remake now because of course, we ended up randomly getting a re-do of "U Sure Do" in the lower quarter of the chart for a few weeks by two faceless DJs. I didn't get into it as much as I wanted to as it's fairly inspired for a commercial dance remake but ultimately isn't quite amazingly good.

David Guetta will make an appearance later on with another big dance remake but for now we get his re-do of "What Is Love" which I quite enjoyed for a couple of weeks before eventually deciding it wasn't really worth bothering with. It's not half as bad as a load of people made it out to be anyhow but he can do better.

Miley Cyrus had the year's biggest hit with 'Flowers' which sure was a well-made pop song but ultimately tired on me long before it tired on the remainder of the general public. If only a certain rap hit had an earlier release date I suspect that would've taken the title but oh well. Miley has had a couple of better tracks but she's done many far worse too so I can't moan.

Randomly taking off on TikTok this year giving it a chart reset we have 'Makeba', which was a lot bigger in my chart at the time of its release but had a little chart revival anyhow also assisted by a new remix. It's a great song anyhow which I'm glad has been a bit more appreciated now, I'd hoped its virality would've translated into a bit more success than it got as it's a very unique pop song but at least it cracked the UK chart briefly.

Starting off the top 50 we have the latest from Dua Lipa. 'Houdini' is an excellent stand-out pop track that proves she is here to stick around as one of the top players commercially. It could of course only get so far with just a month of release but it could very well contend for a spot in the Top 100 next year. We may well see Dua again before long.

Rudimental benefitted somewhat from the DnB revival this year, although not as much as Chase & Status, they did manage one hit in the year. It wasn't their strongest track ever really but a perfectly serviceable pop-friendly DnB track.

Having already been a hit as "Ferrari Horses" the public decided what we really needed was a dance re-do of it as an even bigger hit than the original, and well it's not bad but as far as massive dance hits go the UK has had better. It's good at least to see something this high-tempo for dance get mainstream crossover appeal and also that the focus is more firmly placed on Raye's vocals.

Rita Ora attempted a comeback this year and well, actually had a fairly good pop effort but clearly she's long-past her commercial peak now so the song struggled in the chart unfortunately. The song itself probably would've been more suited to the mid-2010s climate too I guess but it was her strongest of the current era.

We also had Freya Ridings struggle a bit from leaving it too long since her previous album with a song that ought to have been a bigger hit than it ended up being. 'Weekends' was a strong return giving us the sort of pop that she ought to be doing more of over the slow ballads.

Barely counting as 'mainstream' we have the French Eurovish entry which scraped a top 100 placement post-contest. The performance didn't quite go off on the night how I'd hoped which led to a midtable position but it's a very grand and strong song so I'm glad it got a bit of love anyway.

A song you'd perhaps have expected to end up rather highly in my chart now given it's a house effort that crossed over to the UK top 40, alas 'Relax My Eyes' didn't quite hit for me much as I'd liked it to. It's got a great groove to it anyhow though I wish it had better vocals.

Kylie again with the album title track 'Tension' which is another fun pop bop from her. It was great to see her continuing to win me over again with this era although she was never going to be able to make something half as amazing as the album's lead..

Chase & Status have two tracks of their own yet to come but until then here's their team-up with Becky Hill which got her one of her biggest UK hits yet. It was certainly a great switch up for her singing on something a bit more energetic and it worked very well. Hopefully some more bangers to come for her forthcoming album next year. And indeed, life really has been f***ing lifeing xx

Dua Lipa back now with soundtrack hit 'Dance the Night', which is only above 'Houdini' because of timing but hey, it was a bit of a steady grower - and certainly worked well for the Barbie dance scene. How many of these personal charts do I have left before the inevitability of death eh?

Ooh I do like Makeba - nice to see that finally get a chart position after all these years! Dancing is Healing is fab as well - one of the few mainstream songs to hit my Top 40 this year.

Another banga! Rema had one of the year's biggest hits with 'Calm Down' which also became the biggest hit for the afrobeats genre yet. It's certainly a catchy effort and further helped by Selena Gomez whose addition fit surprisingly well with her smooth vocal.

A couple of female vocalist breakthroughs now, first from Kenya Grace whose track 'Strangers' was also self-produced. A rather fresh lite DnB effort with a smooth vocal performance, it was pleasing to hear this as the result after the track broke into the top 40 seemingly out of nowhere. Follow-ups so far haven't been quite so good but we'll see what next year brings.

A rare singer-songwriter ballad breaking through now from Lizzy McAlpine however I am quite open to this type of song when done beautifully as such. It builds very well hitting the emotional impact it aims for which certainly helped it stand out in the chart.

Troye Sivan isn't someone I'm a huge fan of so I wasn't expecting much from a new era of his however when we got a smooth dance bop with a very catchy hook of course I could get on board. 'Rush' does just what its title intends really.

Just missing out on a Hottest 200 spot sadly it is Fred & Skrillex... again! This time with added Four Tet and a Lil Baby sample. 'Baby Again..' is a fairly uncommercial track so for it to have even cracked UK top 100 said a lot about how big a name Fred is now, though it deserved better of course. Quite a hypnotic track which would hit hard in the club, something I'd hope to hear more of from Fred next year.

And here is where we pause the Mainstream 75 and jump to the Hottest 200 as 35 mainstream hits managed to crack it this year (an increase on last year!), let's goooooooo

After the outstanding 'Nova Imperatrix' last year, Driftmoon had a couple more tunes this year although that one was going to prove very hard to top. The closest they got was this, a track with frequent trance guest vocalist Roxanne Emery which is a solid vocal trance effort. First of two for Ram here, although it'll be a bit of a wait for the second to appear. This one is a great almost-instrumental, with some random Spanish spoken words and vocalising for the vibes. Named after the city in Colombia where I suppose Ram must've travelled to for his touring schedule, it's an anthemic trance piece which assisted the parent album 'Wanderlust' get its AOTY title.

Giving I Miss You a listen now - thought I recognised the name Simon Ward, turns out he's the lead singer of The Strumbellas (who will be making an appearance in my EOY - hadn't realised he'd branched out to dance features though!) this song sounds pretty nice though, his vocals go well with the beat and melody.

The lengthiest Lane 8 release yet, 'Woman' is a beautiful instrumental melodic house piece which is one of two songs in the Hottest 200 to cross the 10-minute mark. Now for a song that is very worthy of the word 'epic' as a descriptor, this was another find from BJSC of course with the song itself being 5 years old from this Belarussian orchestral project. Over a decade away from their classic trance collaboration 'I Remember', deadmau5 and Kaskade decided a whole album together was in order. I was very excited for this although ultimately the album wasn't quite as amazing as it could've been. Besides last year's big dance anthem 'Escape' the highlight came from their collab with Sofi Tukker for this progressive meets techno track. It's great seeing Deadmau5 do this kind of commercial dance track with just the right amount of edge anyhow.

Whistle was another one of the better charting songs this year! And Overdrive was a fairly decent BJSC entry as well. Giving Calling For A Sign a quick listen now - sounding decent enough, the drop is pretty good.

2022: Altrice is a producer from Arizona US, whose song 'Places Faces' I found by chance through the Spotify algorithm. A few listens later and I was hooked by its lo-fi beat and looped samples which I'd discover came from Tina Turner 'Private Dancer'. It is reminiscent of the old house trend but I found it to be a rather inventive sample use, and its 5 minute runtime seems to go by rather quickly.
Since then Altrice hasn't yet been able to get a follow-up hit and Tina Turner sadly passed away. Still a tune anyhow.

Was another remake ordered? Well it was an inevitably there'd be one of the classic 2010s Gotye hit, itself a huge #1 in my chart. This one is of course quite inessential but coasts along on the original song being great and not much being changed beyond the addition of a house beat. It works. Kevin McKay is still yet to have a hit song with anything original though oops, another track of his will make an appearance much later on anyhow.

2022: After over a decade of being a big name in trance it was finally time for Gareth Emery to team up with Armin van Buuren. Having been teased weeks in advance I was expecting this to be the most obvious #1 of the year, but it ultimately had to settle for 2nd as Worakls unexpectedly released in the same week. I also would've loved a proper trance anthem from these two but it otherwise lived up to the hype for being a high energy fist-pumping clubland anthem. And there was also the small matter of Owl City finally making another appearance in the chart for the first time in over a half-decade, he does prove to be a great fit for the song.
