2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | 2010

the eighth iteration of my EOY personal chart thread is here, and once again it has been a great year for music, which will be showcased in this thread over the course of the next 2 months.

firstly, the tradition of the hate chart being announced first will continue - the 10 worst hit singles of 2016 will be counted down. I will then briefly reflect on the year in albums, TV and film before the main event: counting down the top 250 songs of the year.

the chart year started in December 2016 and will finish in two weeks time, so the songs countdown will not start until then.

but before anything though, let's take a look at last year's top ten.

01 Kungs vs. Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl

02 MK & Becky Hill - Piece Of Me

03 Era Istrefi - Bonbon

04 TheFatRat - The Calling (feat. Laura Brehm)

05 Calvin Harris & Rihanna - This Is What You Came For

06 Martin Solveig - Do It Right (feat. Tkay Maidza)

07 SeeB - Breathe (feat. Neev)

08 Zara Larsson - Lush Life

09 Alan Walker - Faded (feat. Iselin Solheim)

10 Croatia Squad & Lika Morgan - Make Your Move

it was a big year for Kungs who spent 12 weeks at #1 with 'This Girl' and easily claimed the year-end #1 title, with follow-up single 'Don't You Know' finishing at #23 for the year. Subsequent releases have made very little or no impact however so we will definitely be seeing a different face at #1 this year.

here are the #1 singles of 2017 so far, and if past history is anything to go by one of these singles will be the year-end #1... or could we end up having a non-#1 at the top for the first time?

01 Zara Larsson ~ I Would Like (06/01/17 - 13/01/17) 2 weeks

02 Aly & Fila meets Roger Shah and Susana ~ Unbreakable (20/01/17 - 10/02/17) 4 weeks

03 Gareth Emery and Standerwick ~ Saving Light [feat. HALIENE] (17/02/17 - 17/03/17) 5 weeks *

04 Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson ~ Symphony (24/03/17 - 02/06/17) 11 weeks *

05 Calvin Harris ~ Rollin [feat. Future and Khalid] (09/06/17) 1 week

06 TheFatRat ~ Fly Away [feat. Anjulie] (16/06/17) 1 week

07 Jax Jones ~ Instruction [feat. Demi Lovato and Stefflon Don] (23/06/17 - 30/06/17) 2 weeks *

08 Calvin Harris ~ Feels [feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean] (07/07/17 - 11/08/17) 6 weeks

09 Avicii ~ Without You [feat. Sandro Cavazza] (18/08/17 - 15/09/17) 5 weeks *

10 Avicii ~ Lonely Together [feat. Rita Ora] (22/09/17 - 03/11/17) 7 weeks

11 Rita Ora ~ Anywhere (10/11/17) 1 week

Start speculating now and the hate chart will hopefully start tomorrow.

EOYs already? :o This year has flown by!

Hype anyway :cheer: Hoping to see Saving Light nice and high and hoping Friend of Mine makes an appearance!

I'm making it a tradition to be the first to open an EOY thread. :P

Both of those songs will be somewhere in the top 100!

Much excitement!

I actually think there could be a surprise this year for your EOY #1.

Ooh really, what kind of surprise? ;o

THE HATE CHART

haters-gonna-hate-gif-1.gif

Before we crack on with the ten WORST hit singles of 2017, let's remind ourselves of last year's horrors (even if it would be better for the sake of my sanity to never remember of these tracks' collective existence ever again):

:puke: =01 // Shawn Mendes - Stitches

:puke: =01 // Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better

:puke: 03 // Meghan Trainor - Me Poo

:puke: 04 // DUNCE - Cake By The Ocean

:puke: 05 // Charlie Poof - One Call Away

:puke: 06 // One Direction - History

:puke: 07 // 5 Seconds Of Summer - Girls Talk Boys

:puke: 08 // Fifth Harmony - That's My Girl

:puke: 09 // DUNCE - Toothbrush

:puke: 10 // Niall Horan - This Town

and the HALL OF HATE:

2016 :puke: Shawn Mendes - Stitches / Treat You Better

2015 :puke: Hozier - Take Me To Church

2014 :puke: Idina Menzel - OMG SCREECH (Let It Go)

2013 :puke: P!nk - OMG SCREECH (Just Give Me A Reason) [feat. Nate Reuss]

2012 :puke: Chris Brown - Don't Wake Me Up

2011 :puke: Bruno Mars - Grenade

Which song will join the above horrors? Let's look at the contenders:

• OMG SCREECH (not Pink)

• ""grime"" artists

• Look what she made me do

• A former Wundee member

• A country song even more awful than most

#10 Zedd & Alessia Cara - Stay

And the award for the worst dance hit of the year goes to this. Zedd as Cody knows too well is one of my least favourite people in dance music at the moment which is a shame because he started off so well with 'Spectrum' and 'Clarity' but then gradually got worse ever since... until he got to his all time low point in 2017. Which brings us to 'Stay', which sees Zedd losing all of what he previously was all about in order to get a cheap hit and going all generic future bass on us. Well I know he already did that with 'Starving', but that was different with him being the featured artist, and that was actually surprisingly good. What's so different about this that makes it offensive enough to end up in my Hate Chart then? For one I've never been a fan of Alessia's voice, and with the exception of MK's remix of 'Wild Things' she has not had a hit for me. Mostly though I don't like the way the production just grinds to a halt for the chorus, the robotic backing vocals and the lyrics are painfully basic too, and the drop is nothing to get excited over with it sounding like The Chainsmokers watered down. All in all, quite an annoying song. It is quite sad that he was rewarded with his biggest hit to date with his most generic trend chasing tosh but I guess that's what the public are like. Really though I am still not over 'Clarity' not being the massive hit it deserved to be - It peaked at #27?! NUMBER TWENTY SEVEN?!?

27?

did you read the OP? :P

basically my chart year is like Billboard's so November is the last month of the year, so I'm doing the hate chart and other things in anticipation for the main event!

#09 Jake Paul - It's Everyday Bro

Now this song is objectively worse than a lot of what's yet to come, but this chart is not about objective song quality, rather what I disliked the most throughout the year. This song I was rather conflicted with, as it did bring us a lot of dank memes but it is beyond laughably awful. Jake comes across as the most obnoxious person on the planet not just in this song but in general, and we really don't need these types of people doing well on YouTube when there are actual funny YTers who don't rely on manufactured drama or pranks for views. Also, he cannot rap for shit, the lyrics are just terrible and the hook is just him putting on an annoying voice. None of his friends can either and the whole thing is just embarrassing, it amazes me that this is what pre teens are genuinely into now /OAP. The whole YouTubers doing music phenomena has really passed me by anyway, barely any of them are actually well written. Except for Pink Guy and jacksfilms (for the memes that is, I don't stick them on my daily playlist).

#08 Bruno Mars - That's What I Don't Like

Sometimes Bruno is bearable, on rare occasion he's actually great ('Uptown Funk'), but sadly he continues to release a lot of blegh. And so the token 'I'm so romantic and sexy' song of the era came from 'That's What I Like' which followed '24K Magic' which did fairly well on my chart, peaking at #39. It's such a boring song and there isn't a lot to it, and if it wasn't for the overexposure it wouldn't have made it this far up the hate chart. At least I don't live in America though where this was another #1 for him. I suppose what really makes this offensive is Bruno's wailing voice, but it's not a song I would have enjoyed anyway.

Is this really gonna be the opposite of my chart? The only one we agree on is It's Everyday Bro and I even think that's worse than you're giving it discredit for.

Probably. I seem to remember you disagreeing with a lot of last year's hate chart too

I think I just have a higher tolerance for songs in general

#07 Zaylor - I Don't Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker)

Another year means another number of attempts by former 1D members to stay relevant and after Zayn's first album flopping he took the route of doing a soundtrack single, and not just that but adding Taylor onto it. Following on from the previous Fifty Shades soundtrack singles from The Weeknd and Ellie Goulding that were boring, I very much expected the same from this. Unsurprisingly that's what we get, a really drab unsexy boring song - and if I'm to trust what I've heard about the film it accompanies then they suit each other "well". Zayn has a very weak voice which can't carry the song, his falsetto is painful. At least Taylor is somewhat bearable here but this is not the last we see of her in the hate chart.

#06 Ed Sheeran - Multiple Boring Songs From 'Divide' That Blend Into One

Oh Ed Sheeran, the man who changed UK chart history forever when the entirety of 'Divide' landed in the UK top 20. Just goes to show just how bloody overrated this guy is. And for a while he was inescapable on the radio, the news, everything. Now his comeback singles aren't the reason he's here, those are quite decent but I wouldn't play those out of choice now either. What I really hate from him are songs like 'Perfect', 'How Would You Feel', 'Happier', 'Dive' and any other soppy love ballad that makes me want to punch a wall. How are people not bored of this yet? :| They're not just slow and boring, but offensively so.
