Without You didn't do much for me to start with but has grown on me a lot over the weeks, so this new one might as well. We Were Only Young is definitely the best so far though!

On the topic of radio, I had a look on the Airplay Top 40, and to be fair there are some more interesting songs in there. However those songs are also ones which aren't doing anything in the lower reaches of the Top 100 either, and so the amount of impact those songs will feel in the chart would be quite low, whereas other songs in the airplay chart (most of which are quite old) would be pushed up. Of course this isn't including any sort of ACR for radio which might affect some things but that's another complication. The other thing to note is that the songs in the airplay chart that aren't in the official chart are pretty much all by established artists who no longer get chart hits, and so newer artists would almost universally be hindered by including airplay.

Here's a set of rules that crossed my mind a little while ago: When a song hasn't reached a new sales (i.e. chart units) peak in three weeks, it gets put on a 'ratio path', where in each continuing week it goes to 1:200, 1:300, 1:600, 1:1200 etc. and stops at a point in which the song would be definitely out of the charts. The song stays on this path regardless of whether it increases or decreases in sales each of these weeks. However, if a song reaches an all-time new sales peak, or its highest sales record within the last 10 years, it gets completely reset and goes back onto SCR. The idea being that songs that are still on the way 'up' stay in the charts regardless of how long they've been in there, but songs which stick around for ages after peaking will be gone quickly, leaving space for new songs. Of course the argument against this will be that it's skewing the charts so much that it's not a useful metric any more, which I can't argue against, other than asking what the purpose of the chart actually is for the music industry - is it measuring the levels of success for new songs / artists, or seeing what the most popular songs are even if they're a year or so old? The alternative would be leaving the charts as they are and 'revamping' the niche charts like the Rock / Dance charts to make success on there a more prestigious thing, so getting into the 'main' chart is less of an event.

We've reached the semi-finals of the women's AFCON which means that we know who's qualified from Africa now! The big surprise is that Malawi, making their debut at the AFCON and ranked 153 at the start of the tournament, have made the semis and qualified! They join Algeria, Cameroon and Morocco in the World Cup.

The FIFA U20 Women's World Cup is supposed to be starting on the 5th September and hosted in Poland, so looks like that will be the first awkward situation FIFA will have to handle.

The penultimate day is done and that's the Top 10 basically decided! It says a lot about how the Tour has gone when the leader has so much of a gap that he can basically act as a support rider for keeping his team-mate on the podium I guess Del Toro is the first ever Mexican to make the podium of the Tour? Nice to see Pidcock in the Top 10 as well as three French riders (think that's the most in a while), even is Seixas couldn't get onto the podium.

An interesting thing I noticed a while ago is that the Official UK Christian & Gospel Singles Chart (which was launched earlier this year) has a 'hard limit' of 13 weeks on the chart per song - so once a song hits 13 weeks, it's removed the next week, even if it was at #1 on its final week. Which produces some nasty-looking chart runs, but does the job of preventing the chart becoming like, say, the Rock & Metal charts, where every song in the Top 10 has been in the chart for 500+ weeks. All this to say, if the OCC are willing to introduce some more drastic rules for the minor charts, that's a sign they may be willing to do something for the big one as well.

I was looking forwards to this but if there's no coverage on the BBC I don't think I'll be watching - assuming the Channel 5 highlights will just be TNT Sports highlights wearing a Channel 5 dress again!

Also really enjoying this! One of the best dance songs to enter the chart in quite some time.
