Confirmed

But I'm almost certain a veto will be coming my way. Still, thought I'd try my luck

Aaaaaand as expected, my potential was stolen from me. Well this sucks. And in my first contest, too. Oh well! Good luck to everyone!

:(

People should be nicer to new members tbh.

There seems to be loads of double artist confirmations this time around!

(I mean I haven't, but y'all look like you've been played!)

If it ends up that the person who has travis' song was one of those who posted in his thread, I'll be thourougly disappointed. Not really a nice way to treat new members on their debut contest :')

I tried to enter last night but Cody's told me I'm actually banned this month, which I hadn't realised! :////

I'd misinterpreted the rules unfortunately, having thought that late votes which arrive within the host's extended deadline would be only subject to deduction, with the country in question able to compete the following month, regardless of whether the host made the decision to extend prior to or after the original midnight deadline.

I have no one to blame but myself on this so I'm not necessarily looking for special treatment here, but I do think that the rule is overly harsh when a person takes the time and effort to listen to an entire final, organise their votes, and has them included in results without undue inconvenience caused to the host (as hosts can extend deadlines at their own discretion). Inclusion of as many countries as possible ultimately gives everyone a better, more representative final, and if someone submits votes a matter of hours after the initial deadline so as to support this, I feel a significant deduction to hamper their song's chances is a sufficient penalty and discouragement from doing it again. I do realise that if a country had DNQ'd in the semis and votes late in this way they'd go unpunished, but ultimately they made the effort to meet the host's timings and I think that's the most pertinent thing. More often than not, people failing to vote on time is simply due to life getting in the way rather than laziness or disrespect for the rules of a contest as uniquely enjoyable as BJSC. Voting in good time and having your say included by the host as normal but your participation excluded the following month, after already suffering a deduction, is a bit of a kick in the teeth and acts against the spirit of the contest IMO. I completely understand the importance of rules and incentives/disincentives in BJSC, but this is a bit much for something that's ultimately supposed to be a fun way to share music! That's how I see it anyway, and genuinely not because it's me who's been banned!

As I said, I was wrong to be disorganised and miss the original deadline, and I apologised to Lotti at the time as I really don't like messing anyone around. To give a bit of personal context to this though, I was on holiday with my parents and brothers who I hadn't seen in months, and when I realised the deadline was hours away and not the following day as I'd thought, it was a choice between continuing in their company or rushing away for the rest of the evening with my headphones (and battling with very patchy hotel wifi)! I was extremely grateful that she extended submissions to midday because it gave me a chance to finish listening properly and participate as intended. I did sacrifice time with my family that morning though in listening through and voting, primarily because I love BJSC and wanted to ensure I could enter the next one. Ironically the reason I was never inclined to tell mods I might have trouble voting on time was that I would've seen it as bending rules, but I realise I should've done that in good time, and now I find myself in this situation!

I'd really love to be able to participate this month, however I'm not expecting an exception to be made for me. I do think it's worth considering relaxing the rule on penalties for (reasonably) late votes though. We're talking about generally no more than a 12-hour time frame after all - does falling in that period really warrant double punishment/ a one-month ban? Perhaps the deduction on late votes could be increased from 15% to further disincentivise using the host's chosen grace period and offset a removal of the ban in these cases.

I have to admit I honestly did not realising that extending the deadline after midnight (which I believe I only did by a few minutes anyway) would result in bans for the nations even if they did vote! Completely a mistake on my behalf Noah and I apologise, if I known this was the case I would've extended the deadline a few minutes BEFORE midnight, but I guess also my fault for not reading the rules on extending deadlines :')

Noah voted on time with my new deadline and managed to do so despite the fact I never even got round to sending reminder PMs, which seeing as he was on holiday at the time I think does count for a lot!

I know it's nothing to do with me really but even though I realise you're not asking for an exception I hope you're able to compete Noah.

Anyway, I've confirmed!

Thanks Lotti - I don't blame you at all by the way!

don't worry, I honestly take the blame for this one! next time i'm throwing diva tantrums i'll read the rules first

(I really do hope the mods consider your argument though, as I think this is a different case to most countries being banned!)

Without confirming or denying anything (as I have no idea what Travis theoretically sent), how would it be deemed as not nice? It's an entire different scenario if someone stole a song which was from the potentials posted in a national thread and was only exposed to it from there but if the circumstances was that the individual who got the song first had been hearing it since day 1 of its release then surely there shouldn't be a "you're new so I'm gonna have to bow down and just give it to you" kinda attitude? It's a fair playing field this contest and every member should be treated equally regardless if you've participated for years or if you've just newly established yourself in the contest.

Noah, your case is going to be discussed amongst us as your post (from what I've interpreted) is essentially an appeal so we will get back to you as soon as we can! ^_^

The things is though with this new method of sharing potentials (which I still feel very unsure about and after this month definitely don't agree with) how can we tell whether a song has been genuinely stolen or not? Once a person has registered interesting in a particular artist in their thread, I for one would definitely never think of sending said artist if I had them as a potential before as to me it seems underhand. I don't think this fight to the death attitude is something which will seem particularly welcoming to newcomers, if travis' posts earlier in this thread are anything to go by I believe this is the case.

But then again it goes back to another point that "if someone posts a song in a thread they essentially claim it and have it reserved for the contest", which is entirely unfair surely? That just means it's a rush to post songs in a national thread which defeats the purpose of a confirmation then as the purpose of the latter is to give an even playing field for all competitors of this contest.

As with the point of stealing songs from a thread, there unfortunately isn't a way of proving how a song is sourced by each individual and I most certainly hope no one does this at all. If the statement was to be directed to me well, I'm an avid follower of Asian Pop and I can guarantee you that I did not steal a song from Travis's thread (I've actually heard of all of them welllllll before he posted in the thread)!

Our half a nation have confirmed for our 50th anniversary entry :cheer: Now just to hope it doesn't get vetoed for any reason.
