26TH JANUARY

1985 gets going this week with Foreigner easily outstripping all opposition as its sales surge to 119,901 for “I Want To Know What Love Is”, they can also celebrate as “Agent Provocateur” also ascends 5-1 on the album charts to give them a clean sweep.

Foreigner had better not get comfortable at the top though as arguably 1984’s biggest US chart star Prince is coming for his first UK chart topper as “1999/ Little Red Corvette” flies 13-2 (74,970) in just its second week on the chart. To give you some idea of his US chart achievements “Purple Rain” has just completed 24 weeks at No 1 on the album charts and gave him a No 1 single with “When Doves Cry”, though his chart fortunes over here have been mild by comparison. Both the songs on the current AA sided single have been released before and both date from a few years ago, “Little Red Corvette” is currently on its third release after peaking at No 54 and No 56 when released twice in 1983, and “1999” made No 25 in the same year but they’ve now been combined to produce Prince’s biggest single and it should push Foreigner all the way next week.

With a name taken from lead singer’s Paul King surname, king are the next new entrants into the top 10 and much like Prince it took a re-issue. It seems that the record industry is getting much more savvy at marketing previous “flops” in January in order to take advantage of lower sales and the absence of big names who usually have their product out for Christmas. “Love And Pride” peaked at No 84 last May and is now a much bigger hit despite some less than positive comments in the press about the bands rather eclectic attire on some TV Shows. The song powers 21-6 (43,894) to mark their arrival.

Russ Abbot is now a familiar face on TV thanks to his show “The Russ Abbot Madhouse” which regularly attracts viewers in the millions, not that that helped his last single “A Day In The Life Of Vince Prince” which made No 61 back in 1982 shortly after his move to a better time slot. Obviously some fans of his comedy have also been into the record shops and created a hit of “Atmosphere” which hurtles 18-10 (29,546) this week.

A good few climbers this week within the top 10, Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson halve their position 6-3 (66,215), whilst Tears For Fears again move up 5-4 and are actually accompanied by a sales increase finally to 52,632, Strawberry Switchblade repeat the feat of Paige & Dickson by halving their position 10-5 (44,285). On the flipside three of the big Christmas hits take a hard tumble, Madonna 4-7 (43,435), Wham! slip 3-8 (36,057) and Band Aid dive 2-9 (32,504). For “Like A Virgin” it could sell its 600,000th copy this week, but Wham! will finally pass the million mark in the same period with sales of “Last Christmas/ Everything She Wants” now standing at 991,984 in just 7 weeks ordinarily a spectacular tally in the time frame, but once again it is dwarfed by Band Aid’s current tally of 2,340,016 as it prepares to leave the top 10.

1- I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS- Foreigner (119,901)
2- 1999/ LITTLE RED CORVETTE- Prince (74,970)
3- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (66,215)
4- SHOUT- Tears For Fears (52,632)
5- SINCE YESTERDAY- Strawberry Switchblade (44,285)
6- LOVE AND PRIDE- King (43,894)
7- LIKE A VIRGIN- Madonna (43,435)
8- LAST CHRISTMAS/ EVERYTHING SHE WANTS- Wham! (36,057)
9- DO THEY KNOW ITS CHRISTMAS- Band Aid (32,504)
10- ATMOSPHERE- Russ Abbot (29,546)

Two excellent Prince songs there, Love And Pride is great too. A brilliant song called 'Atmosphere' did belatedly make the Top 40 in the 1980s, but Russ Abbot's wasn't it.

I just happened to get to a video in my YouTube subscriptions that counted down the top 200 best-sellers of 1985, so a timely refresher of songs likely to appear here. No spoilers of course magic.gif

'1999' / 'Little Red Corvette' is an excellent release from Prince indeed, he was killing it around this time.

'Love & Pride' is one of those songs I could recognise for years but didn't know what the artist / song combo was for a long time.

Had heard of and liked Atmosphere for a long time but didnt know it was a novelty song by a comedian until quite recently.

Good songs by Prince, especially 1999, and Love and Pride by King is great one of the last new wave songs really.

Mad it took so long for 1999 etc to become hits!!

Great increasing sales for Foreigner there, fantastic song!

Some thoughts on 1985 overall, I always thought totps so called golden era ended around this time for some reason, 1981 - 84 was by far the best period in the shows history with all the new sounds merging in the chart and some huge bands playing repeatedly every month whereas post 1984 that era of bands quietly disappeared trying to break America or just simply didn’t have any more songs. The studio and everything also became a lot more professional and image conscious. I remember a tweet I read summed it up - in 1981 it was like a group of friends had come for a party and to have some craic whereas by 1985 it was like a professional group of artists had come and were forced to play against their wishes

the Prince songs are ok-ish for me but not big big favourites, but glad he finally gets some recognition in the UK after how massive he's been in the US
much prefer When Doves Cry to any of those two...

the King song is ok-ish, like but don't love...

'1999' is a good one from Prince. I also prefer 'When Doves Cry' though of his releases around this time.

'Love & Pride' is good as well. I playing that at the start of the year, another case of charting low originally before getting a re push!

'Atmosphere' I first came across watching some TOTP episodes during the first lockdown laugh.gif it's fine for a novelty track I suppose. Jolly and funny but naff too.

2ND FEBRUARY

Under pressure all week Foreigner managed to cling on for a further 7 days, selling 105,383 in the end to bring it to 428,740 copies over the last few months, they also dominate at No 1 on the albums front and the single rises to the top slot in the US marking a quite remarkable week for the act. It was chased hard by both Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (3-2, 94,469) and Prince who though he dips 2-3 sold an impressive 91,834 in the process.

You might not have heard of the husband and wife duo Ashford & Simpson, they’ve scored just one minor hit in 1978, but you’ll certainly have heard their penmanship. “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough” and “I’m Every Woman” are just two examples of their work but they’re now also bona fide popstars with “Solid” which powers 13-6 (49,878) this week to become their first sizable hit.

Long a good album seller Bruce Springsteen has built up a firm fan base in the UK as a serious singer with politically themed musings on the US psyche. He’s not troubled the singles chart however with “The River” being his biggest hit making No 35 in 1981, that was until last year when “Dancing In The Dark” was released and went all the way to the dizzy heights of No 28 but did go all the way to No 2 stateside. Once again it has taken a re-issue to see the track lift off but take off is exactly what it does as it launches 20-10 (27,030) this week, it also reactivates the parent album “Born In The USA” which entered at No 2 last June and now returns into the top 5 10-4 helped by an Arthur Baker remix which is a hit in the clubs.

King continue to improve 6-4 (77,843) whilst Tears For Fears relent 4-5 (50,507), and Russ Abbot is also on the move up 10-8 (43,996). Strawberry Switchblade and Madonna are on the way out however dipping 5-7 (47,600) and 7-9 (31,433) respectively, in the US "Like A Virgin" is finally deposed from the top after 6 weeks, meanwhile "Since Yesterday" actually improved sales!

love both Solid and Dancing in the Dark, great tracks.
I agree dancing in the Dark is pretty commercial, much prefer songs like I'm on Fire
crazy how many songs in the 80s flopped first time around even for big names like Prince or Bruce

9TH FEBRUARY

The top slot changes hands this week as nothing could prevent Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson from ascending 2-1 on a strong sale of 101,728 despite no TOTP exposure such is its current appeal to the public. Though female duo’s have topped the singles chart before (Baccara among others) it’s the first time that two female solo acts have combined to score a chart topper, it’s also a tenth chart topper for Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and a second for Tim Rice after “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”.

UK dance music continues to innovate and evolve with the second Art Of Noise single “Close To The Edit” which improves vastly on the No 82 peak of their debut “Beat Box” last year. Their current single actually started life as a remix of their first which has now taken on a new life and rushes 21-10 (26,945) but it’s already in its 12th week being another one of those tracks which was left out in the cold in the festive rush moving 62-41-45-44-45-46-46-43-38-30-21 so far. The group contains Paul Morley and Trevor Horn which helps to explain why the act are on the ZTT label and sample Yes on the track which of course Horn produced.

A good few climbers within the top 10 to discuss, King float 4-2 (86,972) and could yet pose a threat to Paige/ Dickson and Ashford & Simpson drift north 6-4 (67,864) with their sights on the runner up spot next week at least. Bruce Springsteen still has a spring in his step 10-6 (45,339), he’s followed by Russ Abbot 8-7 (40,273) getting the last laugh on his detractors.

Foreigner relent 1-3 (74,290) and Prince ebbs 3-5 (65,059), Tears For Fears are finally on their way out 5-8 (35,887) with Strawberry Switchblade 7-9 (33,031) completing the set.

1- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (101,728)
2- LOVE AND PRIDE- King (86,972)
3- I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS- Foreigner (74,290)
4- SOLID- Ashford & Simpson (67,864)
5- 1999/ LITTLE RED CORVETTE- Prince (65,059)
6- DANCING IN THE DARK- Bruce Springsteen (45,339)
7- ATMOSPHERE- Russ Abbot (40,273)
8- SHOUT- Tears For Fears (35,887)
9- SINCE YESTERDAY- Strawberry Switchblade (33,031)
10- CLOSE TO THE EDIT- Art Of Noise (26,945)

The synthy part near the end of Close To The Edit sounds more like something from 1990 chart dance like LFO/Together or something!
