 Thank you for all the suggestions for your chart flops of 2011, now we look at the next year, 2012. What songs do you remember from this time and why do you remember them fondly? These could be songs that failed to make the UK Top 40 Singles Chart, or even the Top 75, but they have to have been released as a single at some point during the year. I will nominate something in a little while that I personally enjoyed in this year, but for now, it’s over to you.

Marina and The Diamonds two follow ups to 'Primadonna' both missed top 40 and this one even nearly missing top 200 altogether peaking at 193, ouch.

This wasn't as much of a flop as I remembered given it got as high as #17 but it did only spend three weeks on the chart and came after Dappy and Tulisa had achieved #1s.

Santigold only made #96 with this despite featuring on an overplayed advert at the time.
 Solange didn't even make a chart entry with this - though it was released independently and before she received proper recognition in 2016. This should have been massive! Frank Ocean's singles never made the top 40 (though Lost may have done later? Idk) but should have: Kendrick Lamar only made #57 with this - should have been bigger! Oops not them having 20 consecutive top ten hits and a couple releases later miss the top 40 with this. Why they never went with On The Metro I have no clue. Madness! Ok this did make the top 40 but a #33 peak for a single leading her second album release was a massive flop by her standards. She was really screwed over by radio though. I think Capital was promised the premiere of Elephant but Radio 1 ended up playing it first and she got blacklisted by the one major radio station that actually supported Start Without You. This didn't even chart which is criminal! Nearly forgot this megaflop from Leona! It sold "fewer than 600 copies" therefore failing to chart in the official top 200. To be fair, it was very Leona by numbers at that point and received 0 radio support so destined to flop. #Glassheartwasrobbed |

'Lovebird' was such a baffling choice, especially when the shape of her career was in a bad enough state at that point. I remember 'Fireflies' was originally planned as the single and that would have been a better choice.
That Girls Aloud one charted at #97 off the back of a Children in Need performance and the official single was cancelled (although I'm still not sure it would've made the top 40 regardless) |

Really liked the Kendrick track and absolutely loved the Santigold track at the time.

Gosh where do you begin with this year? I was probably listening to Radio 1 the most this year, with an occasional switch over to 1Xtra. Capital was also played a lot by a housemate so there was a wide exposure to music going on haha.

It originally peaked at #61 as 110% in 2012 whereas If You're Never Gonna Move was its #41 peak in 2013 so actually the rename and re-release benefitted the song, just not enough!

At one point I thought this would get to No.1. Super catchy, a rap from Eminem, but it didn't chart in the UK at all.
This was No.1 in nearly every country it was released but No.66 here. Radio here should have taken a chance on it. A very half-arsed comeback from Steps before they properly relaunched in 2017 with the epic Scared of the Dark, this actually pretty nice ballad from their awful Christmas album got to No.82. Well we did have a big Eurovision hit that year in Euphoria by Loreen, but the UK sent dear old crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, who sang first with a very unmemorable show opener completely forgotten by the time voting came. It peaked at No.60 here. A great comeback from No Doubt in 2012 that resulted in only a No.85 hit, but I still listen to this gem a lot. I liked this follow up to Drive By just as much as its predecessor, the chorus is kind of ridiculous but I found it funny. It peaked at No.50. I remember Ai Eu se Te Pego from holidays in Portugal. It has a similar accordion sound but more MOR than Danza Kuduro which was a UK top 20 hit the previous year.

'50 Ways To Say Goodbye' should have gone top 40. A solid follow up!
Keane only made 46 with lead single 'Silenced By The Night'. Ronan's return to solo material didn't produce any top 40 hit in 2012 with 'Fires' only at 76. Lemar also missed the top 40 and even top 150 at that for the first time with a lead single with 'Invincible' and this one isn't from 2012, released in 2001 but didn't chart at the time until this particular year when it peaked at 84. 'Tribute' is one I saw on the music channels so much at the time. A fan of it too! |

Yes to No Doubt, but we can't forget 'Looking Hot', even an X Factor performance couldn't get this in the top 100. Did it even make the top 200?
Nelly Furtado's long-awaited comeback barely produced one hit. I forget which singles were picked for the UK so I'll post the title track here: M.I.A.'s 'Bad Girls' criminally missed the top 40, stalling at #43! I liked 'Girl Gone Wild' much more than 'Gimme All Your Luvin', definitely sounds like 2012 lol. Peaked at #73 and 'Masterpiece' also scraped the top 75. And this should've been a bigger follow-up to 'Call Me Maybe'  |

Totally forgot about No Doubt, Furtado and MIA! 2012 delivered so many great flops! No Doubt SHOULD have had a hit since they had an XF slot. Missed opportunity!

I guess in as much as anything could be released by this point. The download was definitely available in the UK and the song was being played on music channels etc, can't remember if it had much of an airplay push - maybe the lyrics held it back in that regard.
I think it charted in a few countries, like top 50 or so in Ireland. I expect it just missed the chart here. |
