BJSC 162 Entry (February 2024)

Artist: Paul Elstak, The Viper & Boogshe
Song: Rave, Rinse, Repeat

Dutch Hardcore DJ Paul Elstak started his career as a DJ in 1987 when he was hired as a DJ at Rotterdam Discothčque Bluetiek-Inn. Here he played with the Dutch house music pioneer Peter Slaghuis. During this time, he collaborated with Rob Fabrie and Richard van Naamen to form Holy Noise, with whom he released a string of releases on the Hithouse record label (owned by Slaghuis). In 2001, he started a new record label at Rige Entertainment, called Offensive Records.

The Viper’s music is notoriously energetic, and he has build up a huge supply of hits throughout his illustrious career. He has put out some of the most widely loved remixes and bootlegs in the hard dance scene. His extensive history travels far beyond the studio, as he plays for crowds in all corners of the globe, including United Kingdom, Russia, Italy and Australia among many others. It’s in his home country of the Netherlands where the highlights continue to pile up.

MC Boogshe, The Netherlands’ leading female MC brings the best of both worlds – a mixture of house, dance and hardstyle with a hint of HipHop. This lady brings a whole new sound to the dancefloor. Boogshe is not only a MC, but also a singer/songwriter and studio artist. After this international success it did not take very long until she got discovered by various national and international DJ/Producers and collaborated with names like Laidback Luke, Swanky Tunes , Felguk, Coone, Bassjackers, Deepack, Sub Zero Project, Endymion, Ralvero and Showtek to name a few.

Rave, Rinse, Repeat is a throwback to the happy hardcore scene of the 90’s. With pulsating beats, infectious melodies, and euphoric drops, this track takes listeners on a journey through the highs of the dance floor. The dynamic production keeps the energy levels soaring, making it impossible to resist moving to the rhythm. Whether you're at a festival or simply looking to ignite your own personal rave, this song delivers an adrenaline-packed experience that will leave you craving more.

What a ride that was in Sovarasma for BJSC 162! The hosts made us feel so very welcome and delivered a truly suberb contest, and shortly after, we ran a survey across all regions of Zanmatony, and the results suggest this is the best presented song contest Zanmatony have taken part in ever before! w00t.gif

Twelth place is where Zanmatony finished in the final this time around, which is very respectable for our ravey entry this month, and this became our second qualifier of the year so far.

Let's turn our attention to the votes Zanmatony submitted on this occasion, starting with the second semi final votes;

+12 A*S*Y*S & Kai Tracid – Rave The Planet {Rolloland} [QUALIFIED]
+10 DIAMANTE – 1987 {Břtanikkä} [QUALIFIED]
+8 KAWALA – American Adrenaline {Freidland} [DID NOT QUALIFY]
+7 The Veronicas – Here To Dance {Taahino} [QUALIFIED]
+6 Leblanc – Palladio {Danćviia} [QUALIFIED]
+5 Valtos & Elephant Sessions – 1990 {FSR Rontvia} [QUALIFIED]
+4 Together – Hardcore Uproar {The Spodic Empire} [DID NOT QUALIFY]
+3 INXS – Don't Change {Bronzil} [QUALIFIED]
+2 Dead Poet Society – My Condition {Kylienips} [DID NOT QUALIFY]
+1 Hélčne Vogelsinger – Cognitive Dissonance {Eastovka} [QUALIFIED]

When the final was announced, these were the votes Zanmatony sent;

+18 DIAMANTE – 1987 {Břtanikkä} [5th]
+15 Akini Jing – Call Me Shadow {Séyetana} [6th]
+13 Leblanc – Palladio {Danćviia} [14th]
+12 Golden Features – Vapid (feat. Louisahhh) {Dobago} [9th]
+11 A*S*Y*S & Kai Tracid – Rave The Planet {Rolloland} [41st]
+10 Zorza – Memory U {Cor Lupus} [24th]
+9 INXS – Don't Change {Bronzil} [11th]
+8 Hélčne Vogelsinger – Cognitive Dissonance {Eastovka} [8th]
+7 Valtos & Elephant Sessions – 1990 {FSR Rontvia} [32nd]
+6 Grossstadtgeflüster – Ich Kündige {Sovarasma} [1st]
+5 Glockenbach & Öwnboss – Secrets (feat. Jazz Montell) {Ben's Sanctuary} [34th]
+4 glass beach – commatose {Scotland 2} [22nd]
+3 Lawrence Hart – First Light {Fljótavík} [27th]
+2 The Human League – The Sound Of The Crowd {Singerpurear} [16th]
+1 The Veronicas – Here To Dance {Taahino} [21st]

For the second month in a row, Sovarasma, our esteemed hosts, have won, and Zanmatony were able to have supported them once again with their votes. happy.gif

BJSC 163 Entry (March 2024)

Artist: High Pulp feat. MonoNeon
Song: Never In My Short Sweet Life

High Pulp are a Los Angeles-based experimental jazz collective whose sound hints at times to everything from Miles Davis and Duke Ellington to Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. Their songs balance meticulous composition with visceral spontaneity, and the performances are nothing short of virtuosic, fueled by raw, ecstatic horn runs ducking and weaving their way around thick bass lines and dizzying percussion. An inexplicable force pulled the collective together to produce the high-octane jazz, funk, hip-hop, punk, psychedelic cocktail that soon became their signature sound.

MonoNeon is a bassist from Memphis, TN and has been playing bass since began teaching himself to play at the age of four! He is a colorfully dressed experimental bassist that posts prolific jams to YouTube and has played in sessions with Prince, Domi and JD Beck, and Mac Miller.

Never In My Sweet Short Life is described by drummer Bobby Granfelt as having "so many iterations, so many sections, and so much disagreement internally. We kept tweaking and mining the song until we stripped it down to what we believed was its core - a whimsical flying lotus-meets-the beatles psychedelic odyssey. There used to be an outro with a beautiful horn arrangement, but we opted at the 11th hour to scrap it entirely and opt for a modular synthesizer-lead ambient outro featuring a baritone guitar." Debuting alongside the song is a new animated video in which robots are seeking companionship in the desert.
