Love Embarrassment, great record and their first non-Nutty Boy single, the album is also a goodie. Spandau looked very silly when they did TOTP, as did most of the throwback costumes. The record was decent though, but their best was to come in 1981. Mostly though they under-whelmed me, however my mate is a long-time big fan so seen them in concert at least 3 times and every time I came out feeling underwhelmed, a few decent ones here and there along the course of their career though. Not True....

13TH DECEMBER
 With Christmas just a fortnight away the singles chart starts to reap the benefits with 6 of the top 10 discs recording a sales increase- which of course means that four tracks don't and one of those is ABBA who again pull off a double for a third week with "Super Trouper" on both charts, but last week the single only sold 94,000 bringing an end to 6 weeks of the No 1 track topping the 100k mark. The song does move over the 400,000 mark though to 434,000 to be exact and is just 60,000 behind their previous chart topper "The Winner Takes It All" in the process. Another faller is Blondie who recede 2-7 and in doing so lose 32% of the previous weeks sales as they drift to 58,000 but have now sold 541,000 copies of "The Tide Is High" which is now their biggest seller of 1980. Both tracks should finish 1980 in the top 10 of the year.  Onto brighter news, and probably ABBA's replacement at No 1 next week and subsequently the festive chart topper. St Winifred's School Choir is a name you may not recall but you've heard them on a record before and a No 1 record at that, as they provided the backing to Brian & Michael's 1978 No 1 "Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats & Dogs", and now they have a record of their own "There's No-one Quite Like Grandma" which this week powers 16-2 (89,000) running ABBA close, as far as the bookies are concerned the race for the festive No 1 is all over now this has shot up the charts having the Kids market to itself.  Proving what might be the only real challenge to St Winifred's is Jona Lewie who scored his first hit as an artist earlier this year with "You'll Always Find Me In the iamspamspamamiAt Parties" which peaked at No 16. He has of course been in the music industry since the late 60s and most notably was in Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs who hit No 2 in 1972 with "Seaside Shuffle". 8 years later he finds himself back in the top 3 with "Stop The Cavalry" which ascends 15-3 (82,000), the song has been a hit in various territories over the summer only just makes it here at Christmas helped by some festive lyrics, watch the battle ensue next week between these two.  The Police can't quite pull off another debut at the top this week, as the follow up to "Don't Stand So Close To Me" is released. "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" does however slam straight into No 9 (52,000) so they won't be disappointed, and it has 2 weeks to rise to the top so next week will be the best indication if it has the legs to pull of a festive surprise! Every other Police song to debut in the top 10 has gone onto be a No 1 smash for them so there's form here.  After generating some press in the summer whilst on tour and with some famous fans, the Stray Cats created a label race to sign them in the UK and the first spoils of their work with Dave Edmunds is "Runaway Boys" which this week bolts 23-10 (48,000) for the US rockabillies whose debut album is out in the new year. Apart from those already mentioned, Madness hold at No 4 with a 28% increase in sales to 77,000, Spandau Ballet fall back a place to No 6 despite an 11% surge sales wise to 62,000 and Eddy Grant climbs one spot 9-8 with an improved 7 day tally of 54,000. Only the Boomtown Rats slip in sales down to 62,000 as they drop 3-5. 1- SUPER TROUPER- Abba (94,000) 2- THERE’S NO-ONE QUITE LIKE GRANDMA- St Winifred’s School Choir (89,000) 3- STOP THE CAVALRY- Jona Lewie (82,000) 4- EMBARRASSMENT- Madness (77,000) 5- BANANA REPUBLIC- Boomtown Rats (62,000) 6- TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT- Spandau Ballet (62,000) 7- THE TIDE IS HIGH- Blondie (58,000) 8- DO YOU FEEL MY LOVE- Eddy Grant (54,000) 9- DE DO DO DO, DE DA DA DA- The Police (52,000) 10- RUNAWAY BOYS- The Stray Cats (48,000)

Like Jim, 'To Cut A Long Story Short' is the best thing Spandau Ballet ever did for me too.
'Stop The Cavalry' is one song from the annual festive crop that I'm still not bored of <3 I suppose it has only re-entered the top 40 once since release which probably helps. |

I too think that is the best Spandau Ballet song. It's safe to say that if I'd have been listening to music back then I'd have firmly been team Duran Duran.

'To cut a long story short' is probably their BEST song artistically but do prefer listening to some of their mid 80s like 'Only When You Leave'.
Love that Jona Lewie track. Shame it doesn't figure high in the Spotify dictatorship Christmas playlists anymore. Don't get me started... Didn't realise 'Banana Republic' made top 3! |

I preferred jazz-funk Spandau after they'd worn out the frocks n frills run of singles and switched to Don't Need This Pressure On's club vibe going on in 1981. St Winifred's - my grandma was with us at the time, after visiting for my brothers wedding and having a heart attack some days later. She wasn't a huge fan of it, but that might have been feeling poorly still.
Stop The Cavalry was fab, still sounds fresh. Great to see Jona Lewie getting another big hit. I was disappointed with De Do Do and it became the first current Police single to not top my chart since Roxanne, Canary In A Coalmine should have been the next single. Runaway Boys had that dave Edmunds production class and was a big shot in the arm to the growing rockabilly scene - Mansfield was all about rockabilly at this time. Personally, this week I was in a state of shock at the news of John Lennon's murder, a total hero to me and I was hugely upset, I was unemployed at the time so it pretty much took over my life for quite a while. Obviously I bought the current single, and then the album for a christmas present, as there would be no more John Lennon new music ever. Beatles movies re-run on TV over Christmas and the Andy Peebles interview on radio meant there was no getting away from it dominating the media into the new year. |

 Twas the week before Christmas and the charts are anything but quite! The destination of the festive No 1 spot seems to have been decided by the events in New York last Monday and by Mark Chapman who of course shot John Lennon dead, an event which is solely responsible for the turn around of "(Just Like) Starting Over" which catapults from 21-1 this week. The song has thus far had the following run 30-20-13-8-10-21 and was heading out of the top 30 based on Monday's sales by all indications but as news broke on Tuesday Morning the single flew off the shelves and records a sale of 148,000 copies, that's the 2nd biggest weekly tally of the year and lifts its total sales which now stand at 329,000 and with a bumper week next week could sail into the top 10 for the year- a fitting tribute. With shops ordering in some regular festive favourites John Lennon also features on the No 45 track "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" with his wife Yoko as this was already available in small qualities but which is being given a full release this week and could see another massive leap next week- perhaps even dethroning himself? On the album charts "Double Fantasy" rockets 46-2 and is only denied by the ever powerful ABBA. Those events were of course what prevented the inevitable rise to the top for St Winifred's School Choir who hold at No 2 despite a sale of 128,000 easily the best sale for a record in that position this year previously held by Fern Kinney who sold 120,000 at no 2 back in March, they must fear their chance at the top has now gone. In the end Jona Lewie proved no challenge to either though he sold 114,000 copies at No 3- itself a record for the bronze spot in 1980.  There's only one entry into the top 10 and it's the band of the moment (in press terms) Adam & The Ants. Third release from "Kings Of The Wild Frontier", "Antmusic" dashes 16-10 (39,000) and is naturally accompanied by a stunning music video which should ensure it becomes another smash though it may need to wait for Lennon mania to fizzle out. Two climbers in the top 10, the Police move 9-5 (74,000) and Stray Cats 10-9 (39,000) but both are well out of the running for next week and the other 4 are all falling. ABBA drop 1-4 (82,000) Madness slip 4-6 (59,000), Boomtown Rats slide 5-7 (43,000) and Spandau Ballet dip 6-8 (40,000)- next week it's the big one! 1- (JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER- John Lennon & Yoko Ono (148,000) 2- THERE’S NO-ONE QUITE LIKE GRANDMA- St Winifred’s School Choir (128,000) 3- STOP THE CAVALRY- Jona Lewie (114,000) 4- SUPER TROUPER- Abba (82,000) 5- DE DO DO DO, DE DA DA DA- The Police (74,000) 6- EMBARRASSMENT- Madness (59,000) 7- BANANA REPUBLIC- The Boomtown Rats (43,000) 8- TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT- Spandau Ballet (40,000) 9- RUNAWAY BOYS- Stray Cats (39,000) 10- ANTMUSIC- Adam & The Ants (39,000)
