looking outside the top 10, this is a great one from Eurythmics that peaked at #12
but it was single number #4 from Be Yourself Tonight

1ST FEBRUARY

Out in the lead from the off A-ha had an easy week this week selling another 75,650 as it easily saw off the competition from Nana Mouskouri who only sold 54,995 doubling her sales and leaping 8-2. In doing so she pushes Dire Straits down 2-3 (49,895) and at No 4 we have our first new hit this week.

Yes it’s been a whole 3 weeks since Madonna was in the top 10, outrageous, so to make up Sire have re-issued “Borderline”, a song which only made No 56 when it was released in June 1984. Madonna has quickly developed from singer into brand and as such no remix or new promo has been commissioned for the song, and indeed it proves it doesn’t need it rockets 15-4 (41,599) to become her 9th top 10 hit and now means that her only single to make the top 75 and not go top 10 is the unlucky “Lucky Star” which only made No 14. It is of course available on her debut album which itself sold a quarter of a million copies last year off the back of her outstanding popularity in 85 and is back in the top 20 this week at No 14 whilst “Like A Virgin” continues its top 10 residency at No 8 and hasn’t been lower than No 12 since it was re-issued last August.

Billy Ocean continues his trend for hitting the top 10 with every other release as his film tie in “When The Going Gets Tough” declares its intentions with a 28-6 (26,214) climb. It is featured in the forthcoming Michael Douglas/ Kathleen Turner/ Danny Devito film “The Jewel Of The Nile” which is due out here in May though was a Christmas hit in the US, and if you see the promo for the track you’ll also spot those stars miming the backing vocals.

It’s been a long time coming but Five Star finally record a top 10 single with “System Addict”. It’s the bands 8th release and is stylistically a far step from their first single “Problematic” in 1983, their biggest hit to date was “All Fall Down” which made No 15 last year and helped the debut album “Luxury Of Life” to No 24. The band have been marketed as a Jackson 5 for the 80s seeing as they are all siblings and clearly the tight choreography in the video’s is designed to re-inforce this feeling, their last 4 singles have had increasingly poor chart returns peaking at No 15,18, 25, 45 so it is with some surprise that they’ve lifted a seventh single from the album and that is ascends 13-10 (22,593) to become their biggest hit! The album also reaches a new peak this week climbing 27-18.

Fine Young Cannibals move 10-8 (23,086) to equal their peak attained by “Johnny Come Home” last year, but nothing else improves week on week, Mr Mister dip 4-5 (28,849), Pet Shop Boys slide 3-7 (23,273) and Cherrelle and Alexander O’Neal seem to have reached Sunday as they fall 6-9 (22,916).

1- THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV- A-Ha (75,650)
2- ONLY LOVE- Nana Mouskouri (54,995)
3- WALK OF LIFE- Dire Straits (49,895)
4- BORDERLINE- Madonna (41,599)
5- BROKEN WINGS- Mr Mister (28,849)
6- WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING- Billy Ocean (26,214)
7- WEST END GIRLS- Pet Shop Boys (23,273)
8- SUSPICIOUS MINDS- Fine Young Cannibals (23,086)
9- SATURDAY LOVE- Alexander O Neal & Cherrelle (22,916)
10- SYSTEM ADDICT- Five Star (22,593)

8TH FEBRUARY

At 37 letters long “When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going” becomes the joint longest worded chart topper in UK history today (or third equal if you include parenthesis) and a first for Billy Ocean almost ten years to the day when his first hit “Love Really Hurts” entered the charts. His ascendancy was in doubt as an early lead was eaten away by defending champions A-Ha thanks in part to TOTP exposure, when the dust had settled just a couple of thousand separated the two songs but Ocean hang on with 56,780 to A-Ha's 54,570 which brings the latter's tally to 282,115 and is now the best selling single of the year which is admittedly just 5 weeks old. Incidentally you won't be seeing the movie stars replicate their video cameos on TOTP as Devito isn't a member of the musician's union and the union has already effectively said he wouldn't be able to perform the mime on the show!

Promoting a forthcoming opera via the pop charts is an unusual promotional campaign but it’s paying dividends for Andrew Lloyd Webber whose new opera is called “Phantom Of The Opera” though rehearsals have not even began for the piece the lead eponymous single climbs 12-7 (27,625) for Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley. For Brightman it’s her third top 10 smash following on the heels of “Pie Jesu” last year, but Harley has been out of the limelight and the top 40 for 10 years since the height of his fame with Cockney Rebel, the pair have been allocated the top roles in the forthcoming Opera and we’re promised more hits from it before the opening night!

That such a legendary influential figure in pop music as James Brown should be without a top 10 UK hit seems an anomaly, and one that is rectified this week with “Living In America” which is taken from the new “Rocky IV” movie in which Brown snags himself a cameo role to boot. Just like Steve Harley, Brown has been absent from the top 30 for 10 years and his previous best was No 13 with “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” in 1966 and so waits over 20 years to finally do better, his song flies 19-8 (25,483) and is co-written by former Disco singer Dan Hartman.

Currently on tour in the US Simple Minds pluck a second single from “Once Upon A Time” and see it score their third straight top 10 smash, “Sanctify Yourself” crashed in at No 17 last week and now rises to No 10 (22,678). The album debuted at No 1 last November but hasn’t troubled the top 20 again after it dipped out six weeks after release, however it is now resurgent climbing 15-10 and the European leg of the tour will start on the 23rd which is also helping sales.

Madonna performs well this week, “Borderline” nudges 4-3 (49,929), but Five Star make a better improvement 10-6 (29,478). A fair few slipping as well, Nana Mouskouri fails to become the first Greek to top the charts in 10 years as she moves 2-4 (47,668) and Dire Straits tumble 3-5 (35,292) but they spend their 8th week at No 1 on the album charts and even Fine Young Cannibals reverse 8-9 (24,361)

1- WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING- Billy Ocean (56,780)
2- THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV- A-Ha (54,570)
3- BORDERLINE- Madonna (49,929)
4- ONLY LOVE- Nana Mouskouri (47,668)
5- WALK OF LIFE- Dire Straits (35,292)
6- SYSTEM ADDICT- Five Star (29,478)
7- PHANTOM OF THE OPERA- Sarah Brightman & Steve Harley (27,625)
8- LIVING IN AMERICA- James Brown (25,483)
9- SUSPICIOUS MINDS- Fine Young Cannibals (24,361)
10- SANCTIFY YOURSELF- Simple Minds (22,678)

'The Going Gets Tough...' has a good message in the title/chorus but its been overplayed and its a bit slow. I much prefer 'Caribbean Queen' and 'Love Really Hurts Without You' from Billy Ocean

'Living In America' is a great upbeat song

'Phantom of the Opera' is good too, an influence on later symphonic rock bands.

Borderline the best in that top 10 by miles

Phantom of the Opera is nice enough

That Billy Ocean song is so joyous and upbeat for me an absolute classic and I love how Ocean looks like he’s enjoying himself a lot since he’s finally reached the top spot!

15TH FEBRUARY

Billy Ocean dominates the field this week and scores a new 1986 record of 115,923 copies, more than double the figure of the runner up Madonna who sold a more modest 46,104 copies of “Borderline” which is actually in decline at retail. Ocean just signed a new record deal in 1984 and has seen his stock rise over the last two years with a string of hits to rival his 70s heyday including of course a US Chart topper with “Caribbean Queen”, indeed his current hit currently rests at No 2 over there stuck behind the record at No 10 in the UK this week which we’ll discuss below.

Forerunners of the punk movement The Damned were the first punk band to release a single, an album, and tour the US, but for all that they’ve had 10 charting singles since 1979 without ever getting higher than No 20. They were of course the band that contained Captain Sensible until he left in 1984 but the group have progressed from punk to goth rock over the years and last year’s “Phatasmagoria” album proved their biggest hit of the decade, now stand alone single “Elouise” powers 18-4 (38,216) to mark their entrance into the big 10. It’s a cover of the Barry Ryan classic from 1968 which peaked at No 2.

Switzerland isn’t a country which is naturally a generator of pop stars but in the increasingly continental nature of the UK charts over these last few years Swiss band Double are the newest pop stars. Their track “Captain Of Her Heart” sees itself propel 14-8 (24,089) to become the second Swiss act to make our top 10 as far as I can tell, the group’s first album is due this summer.

Su Pollard is of course best known as an actress starring in the BBC comedy “Hi- De- Hi” as Chalet maid Peggy Ollerenshaw, but she tried her hand in the pop world last year with “Come To Me (I Am Woman)” which peaked disappointingly at No 71. She’s doing considerably better with her new single “Starting Together” which is the theme to the recent BBC documentary “The Marriage” which finished last week and sends the corresponding track 34-9 (24,072) this week to make her a bona fide pop star. There is an album in the pipeline as well you lucky people.

And so onto the current US No 1 and the song holding Ocean off the top over there, yes Whitney Houston is back with her follow up track to the chart topping “Saving All My Love For You” which itself is at No 56 this week. “How Will I Know” was written, it appears, for Janet Jackson who passed on it and ends up in Whitney’s hands, she must be regretting that decision seeing what it has done for Houston as it rockets 19-10 (24,021) this week, her debut album also reaches a new peak moving 8-6 on the album charts.

Five Star continue to impress 6-3 (38,386) but are too far behind the top 2 to progress further at present and were lucky to hold off the Damned who ran them close, James Brown launches 8-5 (35,598) whilst A-ha retreat 2-6 (31,280) and Nana Mouskouri slides 4-7 (29,716).

1- WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING- Billy Ocean (115,923)
2- BORDERLINE- Madonna (46,104)
3- SYSTEM ADDICT- Five Star (38,386)
4- ELOISE- The Damned (38,216)
5- LIVING IN AMERICA- James Brown (35,598)
6- THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV- A-Ha (31,280)
7- ONLY LOVE- Nana Mouskouri (29,716)
8- CAPTAIN OF HER HEART- Double (24,089)
9- STARTING TOGETHER- Su Pollard (24,072)
10- HOW WILL I KNOW- Whitney Houston (24,021)

'Eloise' is good, its goth rock as you say but also has some Big Country style guitar/synths. Stadium indie rock certainly now big at that point with Simple Minds making top 10 the week before.

How Will I Know reminds me melodically of 'Who's Zooming Who?' by Aretha Franklin (#11 hit in very early 1986).

Captain of Her Heart is a nice chillout track, very Bill Withers-esque and also reminds me of Sting/The Police with that style of saxophone solo.

Agree that Living In America is a great upbeat bop and of course James Brown was long overdue a top 10.

That Su Pollard record is horrendous.

Amazing that The Damned managed a big hit albeit in the form of a cover. I'm a fan of their goth sound in general happy.gif

My favourite addition since I last commented is probably 'Phantom of the Opera' laugh.gif

22ND FEBRUARY

Billy Ocean slackens the pace slightly but still managed to shift 106,913 copies to take his tally to 312,613 copies and should overtake A-ha as the best seller of 86 next week, it should have some legs left on it as Ocean’s album “Love Zone” isn’t due for release until May, however it can’t make the top in the US where it recedes to No 3 unable to get past Whitney Houston, she incidentally flies 10-5 (39,083) here this week and is hoping to dethrone Ocean in the forthcoming weeks.

His grip on the top spot is still firm-ish however Su Pollard rushes 9-2 (65,263) thanks to TOTP and might pose a threat next week and the Damned also progress 4-3 (48,093) but seem to have run out of speed.

Diana Ross however is very much the next big challenger to Ocean, “Chain Reaction” has been penned by the brothers Gibb for the star who has been missing from the top 10 for 4 years, quite a dry spell for her with even the Michael Jackson penned “Muscles” failing to find a place. It shoots 14-4 (45,203) this week to become her highest peaker since “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” back in 1981, Jackson also helps her out on her title track from the current album “Eaten Alive” which was also the first single taken from the album but bombed at No 71 last September and the album itself failed to go to top 40. It re-enters this week at No 96, could “Chain Reaction” yet salvage the era for her?

For the last 4 years Survivor have been in the one hit wonder club, but when your only hit is “Eye Of The Tiger”, a song which spent 4 weeks at No 1 and sold 980,000 copies (it’s still the 12th biggest single of the 80s) then the situation isn’t that bad. That hit was of course from the “Rocky III” movie, and what do you know they’ve done the theme for the “Rocky IV” film which has already provided James Brown with his first top 10 single which this week ebbs 5-9 (32,000). Survivor’s track is however making leaps and bounds up the charts this week jumping 15-8 (33,473) could it take them all the way again?

Three other fallers to cover briefly, Madonna dips 2-6 (37,893), Five Star drop 3-7 (35,938) and Double steer themselves 8-10 (25,398)

1- WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING- Billy Ocean (106,913)
2- STARTING TOGETHER- Su Pollard (65,263)
3- ELOISE- The Damned (48,093)
4- CHAIN REACTION- Diana Ross (45,203)
5- HOW WILL I KNOW- Whitney Houston (39,083)
6- BORDERLINE- Madonna (37,893)
7- SYSTEM ADDICT- Five Star (35,938)
8- BURNING HEART- Survivor (33,473)
9- LIVING IN AMERICA- James Brown (29,444)
10- CAPTAIN OF HER HEART- Double (25,398)

1ST MARCH

Making it a month on top Billy Ocean clings on though his sales dip considerably at 80,342 which is enough to send it to the top of the YTD list with 392,955 worth of sales but it was struggling all week to fend off Diana Ross’s “Chain Reaction” which moves 4-2 (74,681) and failing some miracle will be number one next week. it wasn't however the initial chart topper as the week began!

That miracle could come in the form of Sigue Sigue Sputnik, a band formed by former Generation X bassist Tony James and who much has been said, hyped, and expected from. The band’s first release has been surrounded by considerable promotion not least of all being featured on the current box office smash “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Love Missile F1-11” really takes off as it debuts at No 7 this week, the second highest ever entry position for a debut hit excluding charity ensemble’s beaten only by Neil in 1984 (and depending on how you view the Style Council). The track is produced by Giorgio Moroder and attracted 27,591 buyers this week.

Paul Hardcastle’s “The Wizard” has been announced as the next “Top Of The Pops” theme and to celebrate he’ll doubtless be happy that he’s got a second top 10 single with “Don’t Waste My Time” which features an uncredited vocal by Carol Kenyon who also went uncredited on Malcolm McLaren’s “Madame Butterfly” and Heaven 17’s “Temptation”. The single glides 13-8 (26,214) this week.

The Bangles are an LA based four piece who rose to fame stateside thanks to a promo which featured Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy, that promo brought them to the attention of a certain popstar called Prince who penned “Manic Monday” for his girl group Apollonia 6 but was given to the Bangles as Prince allegedly fancied Susanna Hoffs. It acts as their first single from their second album (though debut release here) “Different Light” which is out next week as the single marches 24-10 (22,525).

Survivor look like they will be unable to match the heights of “Eye Of The Tiger” as “Burning Heart” can only advance 8-5 (42,330) with a TOTP boost.

Four fallers to summarise, Su Pollard started brightly this week at No 1 as the finale to "The Wedding" aired last week but she was overtaken early in the week and when all the sales were counted failed to make her expected challenge to the top as she ebbs 2-3 (71,502) just ahead of the Damned who retreat 3-4 (43,333). Whitney Houston wouldn’t be troubling the top spot either as she moves 5-6 (41,820) and Five Star dive 7-9 (24,157).

1- WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH THE TOUGH GET GOING- Billy Ocean (80,342)
2- CHAIN REACTION- Diana Ross (74,681)
3- STARTING TOGETHER- Su Pollard (71,502)
4- ELOISE- The Damned (43,333)
5- BURNING HEART- Survivor (42,330)
6- HOW WILL I KNOW- Whitney Houston (41,820)
7- LOVE MISSILE F1-11- Sigue Sigue Sputnik (27,591)
8- DON’T WASTE MY TIME- Paul Hardcastle (26,214)
9- SYSTEM ADDICT- Five Star (24,157)
10- MANIC MONDAY- The Bangles (22,525)

Manic Monday is the best of the lot <3
too bad Whitney only peaked at #5 with How Will I Know, much much better than Saving all my love which went all the way to #1

Sigue Sigue Sputnik were beyond bad
