Chart Commentary

For the second week in a row, there's a top 10 clearout, with five new tracks entering within the top tier. Out of the five, three are from artists who have never achieved a top 10 hit before, while two are from established artists who already have a plethora of top 10s. One of the latter is Lady Gaga, who scores this week's highest new entry with surprise single The Cure. It instantly matches her personal best of #3, also achieved by Applause and Perfect Illusion, although I must say I prefer it to both of those!

Lady Gaga
2013 25 Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) | AT | 25-X (1 week)
2013 03 Applause | 1 | 3-4-6-8-11-18-24-30-38-38-X (10 weeks)
2013 33 Aura | AT | 40-33-X-33-X (3 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 07 Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly) | 2 | 18-22-30-X-25-29-37-X-30-7-12-19-27-33-X (12 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 13 Venus | AT | 13-20-32-X (3 weeks)
2013 34 Sexxx Dreams | AT | 34-X (1 week)
2014 08 G.U.Y. | 3 | 8-13-21-29-X (4 weeks)
2016 03 Perfect Illusion | 1 | 23-3-7-17-35-X (5 weeks)
2016 36 Million Reasons | 2 | 36-X (1 week)
2017 03 The Cure | NAS | 3-... (1+ weeks)

The highest climber this week comes from American singer/songwriter Kiiara, who scored her debut hit last week when Whippin entered at #33. It leaps up this week to #9, giving both her and featured artist Felix Snow new personal bests. Felix Snow has one prior chart hit, on Era Istrefi's #16 hit Redrum earlier this year.

Kiiara
2017 09 Whippin (feat. Felix Snow) | 1 | 33-9-... (2+ weeks)

Felix Snow
2017 16 Redrum (Era Istrefi feat. Felix Snow) | FEAT | 16-21-28-30-38-X (5 weeks)
2017 09 Whippin (Kiiara feat. Felix Snow) | FEAT | 33-9-... (2+ weeks)

Re-entering at #10 after initially peaking at #31 is Places by French DJ Martin Solveig. The track is quite comfortably his highest peaker, with the only competition coming from #27 hit Do It Right from last year. It's technically featured vocalist Ina Wroldsen's first top 10 hit, although she sang vocals on Calvin Harris & Disciples' #6 hit How Deep Is Your Love in 2015.

Martin Solveig
2016 27 Do It Right (feat. Tkay Maidza) | 3 | 27-X (1 week)
2017 10 Places (feat. Ina Wroldsen) | 4 | 31-40-X-10-... (3+ non-consecutive weeks)

Ina Wroldsen
2017 10 Places (Martin Solveig feat. Ina Wroldsen) | FEAT | 31-40-X-10-... (3+ non-consecutive weeks)

The highest of the new tracks in this week's top 10 is from Maggie Lindemann, who jumps 11 places to #2 with Pretty Girl. American singer Maggie has never made my chart before, so of course scores a new personal best this week. Pretty Girl is impacting with two different versions - the original mix (which is getting the bulk of the plays), and the Cheat Codes x Cade remix, both of which are combined for chart purposes. It's very unusual I'll ever be into two versions of the same song at one point, and the only other instance I can think of is Little Mix's Touch, which impacted initially with both the album version and the acoustic version.

On Monday, I went to see The Tide live, and as a result, they see a boost in this week's chart. Put the Cuffs On Me rebounds one place to #5, and first hit Young Love re-enters at #34. The Click My Fingers EP makes a belated debut in the album chart, heading straight for the top spot, and EP tracks The One You Want and Holding On To You make singles chart debuts. I actually got a selfie with each of the members too magic.gif click: Levi, Nate, Austin, Drew

Sign of the Times holds on at #1 for a third week this week, making it only the second song in the past year to get over two weeks at #1. The other was Louisa Johnson's So Good at the tail end of 2016, which also notched up three weeks. He has competition next week from Shawn Mendes, who enters at #7 this week with There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back, and Charlie Puth, who is new at #15 with Attention. Both tracks will climb high next week and I'll discuss them in more detail then, but can Shawn score his fourth #1, or Charlie his second? Or will Harry retain his crown?

1. Harry Styles - Sign of the Times - 1-1-1-
3. Lady Gaga - The Cure - 3- ** HIGHEST NEW ENTRY ** Didn't get the fuss about this at first but it's proved to be a grower and I can see now why it's doing so well! Would be great if it could become a Top 10 hit for her against the odds.
4. Cheat Codes feat. Demi Lovato - No Promises - 1-2-2-4-
5. The Tide - Put the Cuffs On Me - 28-4-6-5-

18. JP Cooper - Passport Home - 9-18- I can't decide if Radio 1 will support this or not?
19. Rag'n'Bone Man - Skin - 22-31-19-18-14-22-32-X-8-14-19-

Hi Joseph

Harry Styles already your longest-runner of the year then, just out of interest what is the longest #1 ever here?

The new Shawn track is very good! Imagine it being huge & probably the next #1 if Clean Bandit can sneak a week this Friday.

Nice to see Places re-enter so high, didn't chart for me but I'm still a fan.

Heard Attention at the weekend, didn't love it but it's better than his last few IMO.

Great chart!

Hey Mango, thanks for commenting biggrin.gif

3. It's great to hear Gaga just making a straightforward pop song again, The Cure is her best in a while for me. It took a few listens to cement itself in my head but I really love it now!
7. I totally agree, it's great that he's not being swayed into some tropical track or something and is remaining true to his own style.
15. I hope it grows on you! I can't resist it right now wub.gif
18. I'd say so! They gave September Song a lot of support so I'd be surprised if they snubbed it.
39. It'd be good to see it become a hit but sadly I think it'd be like going against the tide sad.gif

Hey Dobbo! biggrin.gif Thanks for commenting!

Conrad Sewell's Hold Me Up holds the record for most consecutive weeks, with six in 2015, while Girls Aloud's Something New holds the overall record with eight non-consecutive weeks at the top in 2012! Very rare that a song gets more than a couple of weeks at the top though.

I'd love for Shawn to snatch another #1! Especially as many thought he'd be a one-hit wonder after Stitches.
