Well hello there! Yes it's back, the title says it all, the sales week by week for 1985. We'll count down all the sounds of the year and hopefully generate a few "almost forgotten gems" along the way. As always thanks go to MFR, Vas tariner, Youtube, Wikipedia, MW, popscene, and a few other sources who have helped over the years. Here's the links to previous threads if this isn't your year!

1983

1984

The Internet can't tell me everything so I'm relying on the Buzzjack oldies to throw in some pertinent facts that I may be unaware of (I was only 3 when the decade began) and to discuss the tracks. The format will be the same every week with TOTP performances where available for those songs new to the top 10. So sit back and enjoy every top 10 hit of the 80s (eventually). So don't you forget about...

Looking forward to this! Amongst others, interested to find out the sales a certain song took on while at #2.

I'm intrigued to see what a #1 from recent times sold back in 1985...

I don't think of 1985 a being a year full of huge sellers but I'm not sure whether my thought is based on fact or not - looking forward to finding out!

12TH JANUARY

With a slew of review shows of 1984 it is perhaps not surprising that new hits struggled last week and as a consequence there’s little new to discuss.

With the exception of one song everything else saleswise slides, none more so than the current No 1 which remains Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” it loses 46% of its sales week on week to still post a still healthy 92,769 and bring its 5 week haul to 2,241,399, it is now the biggest selling single in UK pop history! And it’s still at the top of the charts!

Wham! Are still playing second best for a fifth week in a row but held up much better than Band Aid with a sale of 58,106 which also means it has sold 897,005 in total and should pass the million mark sometime this month unless it collapses dramatically. Its ongoing appeal of course is down to the group promoting the AA side “Everything She Wants” with radio on board, parent album “Make It Big” is virtually at the million mark now and has overtaken their debut “Fantastic” which is just shy of 850,000.

The only song to gain sales this week belongs to Foreigner who post a sale of 38,131 to leap 10-4 but they still lag behind Madonna who rebounds 4-3 (52,462) to provide “Like A Virgin” with a new peak, it only lost about 20,000 sales week on week which means it could supply us with a surprise No 1 next week if the Wham!/ Band Aid stranglehold continues to loosen at its current rate.

Tears For Fears continue to move in the right direction 8-7 (28,594) even with lost sales whilst Paul Young holds at No 9 for a fourth week (25,126) but the rest are falling. Paul McCartney finally croaks 3-5 (36,091), Toy Dolls keel 5-6 (31,790), Ray Parker Jr is exorcised 6-8 (27,625) and Frankie Goes To Hollywood lose their Christmas cheer 7-10 (18,139)

1- DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS- Band Aid (92,769)
2- EVERYTHING SHE WANTS/ LAST CHRISTMAS- Wham! (58,106)
3- LIKE A VIRGIN- Madonna (52,462)
4- I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS- Foreigner (38,131)
5- WE ALL STAND TOGETHER- Paul McCartney & Frog Chorus (36,091)
6- NELLIE THE ELEPHANT- Toy Dolls (31,790)
7- SHOUT- Tears For Fears (28,594)
8- GHOSTBUSTERS- Ray Parker Jnr (27,625)
9- EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE- Paul Young (25,126)
10- THE POWER OF LOVE- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (18,139)

19TH JANUARY

The festive hits finally feel the cold this week with Band Aid surrendering the top spot after 5 weeks, they sold just 66,113 last week and slide 1-2 but they do go over the 2.3 million mark to compensate. It is replaced by Foreigner who score their first UK No 1 single with “I Want To Know What Love Is” which only managed to sell 73,882 itself, the album from which it is cut “Agent Provocateur” also finally makes the top 10 climbing 17-5.

Digging a little deeper on the headline however and we have a bit of an argument over Band Aid brewing! The single it transpires was deleted on 31 December and so stocks of the track are now becoming increasingly hard to find and so it’s descent from the top may have more to do with this than any real decrease in demand.

The reason for the deletion seems to be that the music industry isn’t as keen to continue to sell the single after the holiday period at what is effectively a loss for all concerned and are trying to put pressure on Bob Geldof to allow them to mark up the price of the single. Geldof is already allegedly incensed by some record shops who haven’t been towing the line and who have been selling the single at the usual price for singles from the moment it was released. Geldof’s response to this request to increase price was to delete the single!*

Some new blood arrives in the top 10 with Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson’s “I Know Him So Well”. The song is penned by Tim Rice and Benny and Bjorn from ABBA, and with the group on a seemingly endless hiatus the two songwriters are branching out in different directions, this track is taken from the concept album “Chess” which focuses on the cold war relationship through the medium of the rivalry in that game. The track’s chorus takes “inspiration” from the chorus of the ABBA song “I Am An A” and fires 34-6 (27,438) this week to become both Paige’s and Dickson’s 2nd Top 10 single after “Memory” in 1981 for Paige and “Answer Me” in 1976 for Dickson, the two stars of course play the lead characters on the album, there are plans to make it into a west end show in the near future.

Rap royalty is with us again in the top 10 in the form of Melle Mel & The Furious Five with “Step Off” which ekes 11-8 (25,959), despite the furious five being in the top 10 before (1982’s “The Message” as well as Melle Mel (on last year’s “White Lines”) it’s the first time they have been on a top 10 hit in the currently credited form. With Grandmaster Flash having left the outfit they are currently in litigation stateside over royalty rights.

Debut single “Trees & Flowers” failed to chart but with strong support from John Peel and an extensive publicity push second single “Since Yesterday” proves the breakthrough single for Strawberry Switchblade. The Scottish Duo Jill Bryson & Rose McDowell first did sessions for Peel back in late 1982 which got them a record deal and their current single, which has already been in the charts for 10 weeks, finally progresses 32-10 (22,576) now that the Christmas flurry has passed.

Tears For Fears return to a sales boost and continue to climb 7-5 (44,387), but Ray Parker Jr also rebounds 8-7 (26,384) despite a sales loss, whilst incredibly Paul Young clings to the No 9 position for a fifth week (24,616). Wham! dip 2-3 (58,106) that's an increase spurred by the AA Side, and up at retail too for Madonna who regardless dips 3-4 (56,661) but has now sold 529,227 copies.

1- I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS- Foreigner (73,882)
2- DO THEY KNOW ITS CHRISTMAS- Band Aid (66,113)
3- LAST CHRISTMAS/ EVERYTHING SHE WANTS- Wham (58,922)
4- LIKE A VIRGIN- Madonna (56,661)
5- SHOUT- Tears For Fears (44,387)
6- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (27,438)
7- GHOSTBUSTERS- Ray Parker Jnr (26,384)
8- STEP OFF- Grandmaster Melle Mel & Furious Five (25,959)
9- EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE- Paul Young (24,616)
10- SINCE YESTERDAY- Strawberry Switchblade (22,576)

Everything Must Change set a new record of 5 weeks in total at a #9 peak. The next song to set a new record at any Top 10 peak was Kiss Me More with 6 weeks at #3 in 2021, which has since been surpassed already.

Didn’t know the story about ‘Do they Know it’s Christmas’ being deleted. Assume it was new prints available that December or just leftovers?

A fan of both versions of 'I Want To Know What Love Is', love the choir on the original especially.

'Shout' and 'Like A Virgin' also great!

'Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is' did create a template for later 80s and early 90s power ballads but it is not one of my favourites. My favourite power ballads of the 80s are still to come.

'Step Off' is like a hip hoppier part 2 of Chaka Khan's 'I Feel For You' - it uses the same intro.
