Merry Listmas!

as per the last few years, the chart year is from December-November so that I'm not still here in February counting down tracks, and this year I want to try and have at least most of it all done before January too, last year's took way too long.

the top 250 songs based on chart points and playcount of the past 12 months will be counted down starting in December. Until then there'll be a brief reflection on the worst songs of the year, and the best in albums, film and TV (however little there was of it this year).

but before anything though, let's take a look at last year's top ten singles.

it was Avicii who claimed the year's top selling single with posthumous release 'Heaven'. It broke the record for most weeks spent at #1, spending 15 unbroken weeks there throughout all of summer. he also had the album of the year with 'Tim'. could he top the list once again in 2020?

Album of the Year Contender: CamelPhat – Dark Matter



I'm going to break tradition and begin the thread on a positive note this year, starting with my favourite albums of the year. We start with the long-awaited debut album from CamelPhat, an era which began way back in 2017 when 'Cola' became one of the decade's biggest club records and ended up being a commercial crossover smash. 'Panic Room' and 'Breathe' followed it with all three being amongst my absolute faves of the decade. They haven't been able to make anything on that insane quality level since but it is a very solid album, with all of its tracks having made my personal chart excluding the interlude. 'Hypercolour' will be making an appearance in the EOY singles chart, with 'Not Over Yet' and 'Easier' being highlights of the previously unheard material being instant single material. 'Carry Me Away' is also a beauty of a track, a bit more laidback for them but I love it. The album is a great mix of house and electronic dance and it proves themselves to be at the top of their genre.

Album of the Year Contender: Craig Connelly – A Sharper Edge



Now a name you're probably unfamiliar with, unless you were in Club Bizarre when I sent 'Run Away'. Craig Connelly specialises in uplifting trance music which sadly is a very underrated genre these days, not getting a whole lot of streams/attention. This album was one of the surprise hits of the year for me as I didn't consider myself a fan of his before but after putting out a great trance anthem in 'Time Machine' I gave the album a listen. Very reminiscent of classic trance if you're into that sort of thing. The opening track 'Sonic Grey' is another standout with its orchestral intro, then the tracks I charted between 41-50 are all great vocal trance tracks.

Some decent songs on the Camelphat album although can't say I've heard it in full. Cola, Be Someone, Hypercolour and Not Over Yet are probably my favourites so good to see three of those made your Top 10!

I think you'd like most of the album, although I'd recommend listening to it in two sessions, as it is an incredibly long album at 90 minutes. Or at least check out the tracks I charted in my top 40

Album of the Year Contender: Disclosure – Energy



Disclosure finally at long last released their third album 'Energy' following a five-year wait (although we did get some EPs in the meantime - the most recent of which was tacked on to this album's deluxe version so this really is an entry for the album/'Ecstasy' EP combined). Sadly it wasn't quite as good as their first two albums for me but still provided us with some great tunes with them keeping to their brand of garage/house that they do so well. 'Douha' is a big standout from the main album, which will be in the singles top 100. The best of the rest are 'My High' and 'Watch Your Step' which I'm getting back into now with it being the next single (and it is great to hear Kelis on a track again). 'Tondo' was the highlight of the EP which will also be in the top 100 alongside Khalid collab 'Know Your Worth'. Overall, another good year for Disclosure - and this project has helped cement their place in my all-time top 10 most played (currently in 5th).

Album of the Year Contender: Dua Lipa – Future Nostalgia



As I'm sure you're all aware I am mostly a fan of dance music and that will be making up the vast majority of the thread inclusions here, however Dua Lipa has become one of my faves as well with her 2nd album Future Nostalgia. Minus the final two tracks on the standard album, it is full of great pop and I really enjoyed the disco influence in it too - especially the early 00s disco house throwback of Hallucinate which we'll get to in the singles top 100, alongside her rightfully massive leadoff single Don't Start Now. In a chart landscape that I'm growing increasingly away from due to what I'll call "TikTok pop" and rap that I generally don't care for, having a popstar like Dua is much needed and she really proved herself with this record. Dua is now in 6th place in my list of most played female singers of all time, sure to overtake Ellie Goulding by this time next year.

Some great albums here. I really enjoyed finally hearing a whole album from Camelphat, with 'Panic Room' being my favourite.

Also nice to see Future Nostalgia make the cut. Easily one of my favourite albums of this year (although I agree without you about the last two tracks ).

It was great to see the CamelPhat album finally materialise (and not get delayed even further as I feared), certainly a strong debut.
I get the feeling Future Nostalgia will be in the list of most people's favourite albums here, Dua Lipa really is tailor made for Buzzjack's taste (as is another album yet to appear in my top 10 - unranked by the way except for my Fave which I'll reveal at the end).

Album of the Year Contender: Duke Dumont – Duality



Another long-awaited album to follow CamelPhat's – Duke Dumont had been in the mainstream since 2013 but as we all know, it can take years and years for an album to actually materialise from a dance act, if one ever comes. Well 2020 finally gave us 'Duality', long after Duke Dumont stopped chasing chart hits so it is a different album to what I would've expected a few years back, although 'Ocean Drive' did get included for being his biggest world hit and actually fitting well on the album. Although I don't love anything here as much as most of his old hits, it's a good effort of an album. He's certainly evolved as a producer and it's refreshing to see, just a shame it means he can't get hits anymore as the GP only seem to lap up the basic house bops. 'Therapy' and 'Nightcrawler' will be making appearances in the singles top 250, with 'The Power' having done so last year.

Album of the Year Contender: Grum – Deep State



Now, this album actually is just over a year old, and apparently delayed for a year too, although it didn't appear on my radar until 2020, so I'll count it. Grum fell off my radar for quite a few years but recently went through a rebrand, now making great techno-inspired progressive trance. It's all very well produced with dark synths and big drops running throughout the album. I really haven't given the album as many listens as I should but it deserves a spot in my Top 10 nonetheless. The two big highlights here are 'Afterglow' and 'Tomorrow', which will both be seen in the top 100 singles chart.

Album of the Year Contender: Kygo – Golden Hour



Oh Kygo, how you've been very hit-and-miss. Honestly though, there is enough material on this album that's good enough to warrant a place here (particularly as I don't listen to a whole lot of albums anyway), although there's more filler than on the other albums in my list. And that's even without the two misguided attempts at recreating 'Higher Love' that followed afterwards. Kygo sure does know how to make a good dance-pop tune when he wants to though. Nothing here comes close to beating the aforementioned Whitney remix, but 'Like It Is' whilst fairly standard for him is a rather good tune (and gave Zara a much needed hit), and having some Avicii inspired material on the album was great to see as well (particularly 'Beautiful').

I think Disclosure's album is underrated personally, I'd put it about on par with their debut (with 'Caracal' a bit of a step down from both but still solid). There's only really one dud on the tracklist for me ('Birthday', I guess also 'Talk' if you include that but I see it as more of a bonus track / tacked on for the streaming figures) and I'd put 'Douha (Mali Mali)' and 'Who Knew?' (and 'Tondo') up there with their very best songs to date.

Dua's album was great too (a few songs I don't care for but the ones I do like are good enough to make up for it) and CamelPhat's album was super solid and consistent as well, obviously good to have a collection of all of their essential singles and there was a good handful of quality album tracks on top of that, I worried it would start to drag being 21 tracks long but I found myself enjoying it the whole way through. Unsurprisingly not heard these other albums you posted so far x

Hm sadly for me there were a few tracks I weren't very keen on but most of it was at least rather good. 'Talk' was in my EOY top 20 last year anyhow so is my fave of the album if you do include the bonus tracks.
Glad you at least like most of the mainstream choices on here so far anyhow.

Album of the Year Contender: Lady Gaga – Chromatica



The other pop female on the list this year is of course Lady Gaga, who delivered what I'd been waiting for since Artpop giving us an album of dance-pop tunes. She doesn't compromise on vocal quality though giving some great performances. The instrumental interludes were a great idea from her too helping it be her most cohesive album yet. 'Rain On Me' may well end up being my favourite song she's ever done, more on that when we get to it in the singles rundown. The production throughout the album is great too and I'd like to think won't date as much as the RedOne era, certainly not as much as some of the EDM of Artpop anyhow.

Album of the Year Contender: Lucas & Steve – Letters To Remember



Lucas & Steve had been around for most of the 2010s but as ever with dance acts a debut album could only come many years after first becoming prominent. I didn't particularly anticipate an album from them but decided to give a listen as I really enjoyed the lead-in single 'Another Life'. As it turns out they're now into doing very Avicii influenced dancepop so it was very much an album made for my taste. The songs are rather generic but it's done well, they're certainly better as songwriters than most of the acts on the Spinnin roster.

Album of the Year: Gareth Emery – The Lasers



As I suspected would be the case last year when Gareth Emery announced he'd have a new album, it is 'The Lasers' which is this year's Album of the Year. I really am that predictable! Following last year's collaborative effort with Ashley Wallbridge, he went in a less trancey, more song-focused direction for this album. It is also quite unique for a dance album for guesting the same vocalist throughout its entirety, namely Annabel. The lyrics were also written by Gareth and many of them are very personal which really makes this quite a special album. Gareth even sings himself a little on the song 'Welcome To Your Life'. The songs 'End of Days', 'Gunshots' and 'You'll Be OK' feel like they were written for the year that is 2020 for various reasons, and to top it off we have 'Elise' - a beautiful song written about Gareth's daughter, also with the best of the pandemic-themed music videos that came out this year.

Here is how my EOY chart works. As per the last few years, the top 250 best 'selling' songs of the year (as determined by my points system) will be counted down, though more attention to detail will be paid for the top 100.

The tracking year for 2020 takes into account points accumulated from chart #484 to the most recent #535. The points are baed on two factors; playcount taken from December 2019 to November 2020 inclusive, as well as weekly chart positions. Any plays from tomorrow onwards will count towards next year's chart. The chart points will be expressed as 'sales' totals for the tracking year.

To keep it fair, any song that charted during the tracking year is eligible, including tracks that did not peak during the tracking year, which means there will be quite a few 'leftovers' from the previous year. The countdown is as big as a top 250, to make sure that plenty of newer songs get a look in.

However this year there will be a new rule that holiday songs will not be permitted in the chart, otherwise there'd be too many of them (and I want to leave my EOY playlist as is come January). I'll do a quick rundown of the top holiday songs shortly, alongside some 'nearly made it's.

It was a great year for Leona Lewis once again who claimed the post-Christmas number one with 'One More Sleep', getting her 3rd total week at #1 having got 2 weeks at #1 the previous year. The song has already returned to the chart at #26 too, the highest it has got in November thus far. Meanwhile a new fave has come along, well less new and more of a new version replacing the old with Ellie Goulding's take on 'River' which meant original Joni Mitchell version didn't do so well. Other former #1s from Hurts and Kiesza are in the top five with another big festive favourite from Wham! getting a new yearly sales high.

Mariah Carey finally cracked my top 10 last Christmas reaching #10, however she has the 8th highest song here on sales ranking, just behind her old chart rival The Pogues. Amongst other old favourites Sarah McLachlan's 'Wintersong' (randomly) grew on me big last Christmas and charted for the first time, it ends up at #17 here. Gwen's record continued to grow too and Becky Hill's festive effort (although arguably not really a Christmas song, it was certainly made for the occasion with all the chimes in the production) getting a good first showing just passing 200k points. Just outside the top 20 are Band Aid, who would've been top three or even #1 here once upon a time but it's not one of my ultimate faves anymore.

Commentary

We start the countdown this year with Midnight Kids, the first of a fair few BJSC discoveries of the year that will be making the chart - alongside of course the vast majority of what I sent this year too. Rich sent the song early in the year and finished 3rd with it thanks to its synth pop production and big chorus. A song I think would sound very good in the car after dark, not that I've had the opportunity to really do that considering there's nowhere to go. Lucas & Steve have two appearances in the rundown, just about. Their current hit 'Another Life' will potentially feature in the top 100 but for now 'Letters' places at #249. The song may as well be a love letter to Avicii considering how similar the production is to many of his country inspired hits, although it isn't quite as good obviously it's still worth a listen if that's the sort of thing you like. Hanging over from last year is Denis Kenzo whose progressive trance track 'Guide' reached 14th last year, it also made the EOY list the year before so it's had some stunning longevity. Unfortunately for Denis his more recent material hasn't been all that great and this will remain his only appearance. The song was also you may remember an unfortunate DNQ for me in BJSC. Becky Hill is up next with the first of five appearances for her, with her most recent proper single 'Space'. The song was unfortunately a big chart flop officially but still managed to be a minor hit for me. She's got such an impressive vocal so it's a shame it seems to be underappreciated when she's not doing uptempo dancepop. Kygo's promo single 'Broken Glass' is the first of 3 year-end appearances for him at #246, and also marked the first chart appearance for Kim Petras. The song is what you'd expect from Kygo but helped by a great vocal performance.

Commentary

I hope this chart doesn't lose much credibility from the inclusion of Lil Mosey here, admittedly with a song that could almost be considered novelty in 'Blueberry Faygo', but it is rather catchy and easily the best I've heard from him. I've yet to like anything else he's done. It's very much helped by the laidback summery production and the hook. One of the better US rap crossovers of the year for me. Dubdogz and Bhaskar took on the Infinity Ink club classic 'Infinity' giving it the slap house treatment and it proved itself to be a bigger hit than the original.. in the real world. It didn't quite do that on my chart but still got a respectable sales total, I have to give them some credit for modernising the track and making it still sound great. It was also sent into BJSC, although I'd knew the song beforehand. Sassy Vassy will be featuring a lot later on with a certain BJSC flop of mine, but for now she is here with 'Blink', which almost did have a blink-and-you'll-miss-it run - making it no higher than #50 whilst 'Trouble' was still riding high. It's got a rather generic EDM drop the kind of which I'm not as fond of these days but I do enjoy Vassy's vocal on it. Another BJSC song next from DJ Paul Elstak and Klubbheads courtesy of Lewis and it's only the first of his entires here. 'Memories' is a great 90s hardcore rave throwback tune making its title and lyrics rather appropriate. With it being a genre I never cared that much for it certainly did its job of making its way into my affection doing it better than many actual 90s tracks. Finally we have the comeback of progressive house legend Eric Prydz, who released his first track in years (excluding those done under his aliases) 'Nopus'. The track was named as such by his fans when he started playing it in his live sets in place of 'Opus' for being 'Not Opus'. Unfortunately with it only having a month of tracking it could only get this high up but I'm sure we'll see it a fair bit higher next year. It is so great to hear another tune like this of his again, he's truly excellent at these. Let's hope more is on the way.

Infinity is probably my favourite of those posted so far, a great discovery from BJSC. Giving Nopus a listen now, quite enjoying it! One of the best instrumentals I've heard in quite a while.

'Run It' and 'Infinity' are two fab BJSC entries here. Pointed both and both will be in my EOY! Also liking 'Free Woman', 'Levitating' (although on first listen I didn't think anything of it and was baffled as to why people were thinking it sounded like a hit but now I see why and don't get why I thought that lol), 'Ain't It Different' and 'Laugh Now, Cry Later' is one of Drake's better songs this year as well.

Commentary

Sigala & Becky Hill had a huge hit last year with 'Wish You Well', a song which managed to do well enough on residual streaming throughout the year to chart once again on the year-end list at #240. It also says a lot that their collaborative follow-up 'Heaven On My Mind' manages to only outpace it by two positions! The song was somewhat of a disappointment even if trying to replicate the magic of their first joint effort would be too difficult. It did however have some rather good stability at the bottom end of my chart for a good few weeks, and does its job reasonably well of being a light house bop. Becky's vocal is impressive as ever too, although I feel the full extent of her vocal talent isn't shown as much on this track as many others she has done. Sigala can certainly make a better song too, but he also has done worse. It's a fair position for the track really, and fortunately for Becky it'll be a good while yet before we get to her final two appearances in the rundown, even if she does have three tracks in the first fifteen to fall out. Sandwiched between the two tracks are Robin Schulz & Wes with 'Alane', a reworking by the German DJ of Wes' hit from the late 90s. I knew of the original through it getting a play on plug.dj a good few years ago, but hadn't thought about the song for a while so this version was as good as new for me. It certainly does its job at modernising the song giving it a house beat and drop section. The vocal here certainly makes it stand out, being sung in the African language of Bantu-Kana - with the title translating to 'Love Song'. Gareth Emery has the most appearances out of anyone here with 12. 7 of these come from his album 'The Lasers' and the first of these is 'St. Mary's' at #237. The song is one of the most personal on the album with lyrics about Gareth's hometown and reminiscing on the old times. It doesn't have much of a drop to it or a beat made for dancing to but it is a great track regardless showing his songwriting ability. A place above we have Christina Novelli with a song originally released as part of her acoustic album, then later given a single mix (although I'm not sure who by) with trance production. Christina has one of my favourite voices in trance music and whilst this one isn't amongst her absolute best it still deserves its place in the rundown. She will be making 4 more appearances, and it seems I didn't even realise she was here 5 times as 3 of those are as features.

Commentary

K-391 and friends manage to hang on from residual streaming of 'Play' which made last year's top 100 at #235. The song samples the 00s track 'Eurodancer' from Mangoo which was also a former BJSC entry of mine, and does with it what you'd expect with Alan Walker being on the list of performers. CamelPhat may've had one of the albums of the year but they only make two appearances in the singles list, mostly due to their set of new hits being a bit too new for the countdown. And in fact, this first one isn't even taken from the album with it being a club-oriented loosie. It's not the style of CamelPhat's I usually get with being more tech and less melodic, but that bassline is hard to resist alongside the chilling vocal. The Weeknd had a great 2020 having the biggest hit single of the year. That is still yet to appear but for now we have its follow-up 'In Your Eyes' at #233 - which had a similar synthtastic 80s vibe, alongside a sax which we don't get enough of in pop music these days. Duke Dumont started the year off with 'Therapy', a 90s rave inspired track with some (sadly uncredited) power vocals. It's not the sort of sound I was expecting from him and I don't enjoy it as much as his earlier hits but it's a rather good tune nonetheless. At #231 is Gryffin with an unlikely collaboration with Marina, alongside the lesser known Model Child. It did what Clean Bandit couldn't do and give Marina a hit in my chart, helped by her great vocal performance and the song's big sounding drop. The song unfortunately got caught between years which makes it lose out on a top 200 spot.

Heard Alane quite a few times, it's a nice song and one I would have loved to see cross over to the UK but I really wanted to like it more than I did It did make the lower section of my chart but didn't hang around long, still good to see it getting some love on Buzzjack.

In Your Eyes was my favourite of The Weeknd's charting tracks this year and a rare mainstream hit to make my Top 40.

Commentary

At #230 we have a rap hit from StaySolidRocky that got disliked by the majority of Buzzjack and I understand why, the guy doesn't exactly have the best singing voice and it's a fairly standard trap song but it was a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It helps that the beat is built around a piano loop, I do like that. I won't complain if he does turn out to be a one hit wonder though which seems likely. Next up are trance group Above & Beyond who continued to release new music throughout the year although we're yet to have any news of a forthcoming album yet. For now we have 'Reverie' alongside regular vocalist Zoë Johnston which is another rather lovely effort from them. Another rap song is up next now from The Scotts who are named as such due to Kid Cudi's real name and Travis Scott's stage name, although neither are Scottish. It was also one of the large handful of songs that made #1 in America which perhaps didn't really deserve to do so, but it is rather good for what it is with some interesting production to go with it including a great outro, although it could've used a proper hook. EDX has long been a mainstay of my chart and he continued to rack up some minor hits this year, the biggest of which was 'I Found You', a vocal reworking of last year's 'Neptune', just more of his usual style which he does well. Finally a song which seems like an odd pick from The Morrighan, being from the year 1999. However it was allowed on my chart as it was my Club Bizarre entry to the 90s themed contest. 'Remember' is a lengthy trance track that seems to be have ironically been largely lost to time; it's not even on Spotify except in remixed form. Which is a shame really as it was a great discovery for me and stands out amongst many others of the era. At least it managed a top 10 spot in the contest anyhow.

I didn't expect it would be a crossover hit, it's incredibly hard to push foreign language songs here now sadly and Robin Schulz doesn't do anything with his other tracks either.
In Your Eyes is definitely one of the better hits we've had from him in recent years.

Commentary

Tones and I will be making an appearance a lot later on of course with 'Dance Monkey'. Meanwhile at #225 here is her underrated follow-up single which only managed to just scrape the UK top 100. It's a lovely ballad with uplifting lyrics which remains her most recent hit for me, although new one 'Fly Away' could yet grow on me and make next year's chart. Another rap song lands at #224 this time for Lil Baby who I am usually not a fan of, but he finally got a top 50 hit for me with 'We Paid'. It's got a catchy hook and minimalist beat which I surprisingly like. Trevor Daniel at #223 has the honour of having the only entry in this countdown that failed to even reach my weekly top 75, but 'Falling' had enough lower chart longevity to make it in. The song being a year old now remains the only song of his worth caring about, and is a decent Post Malone/Juice WRLD impression. Another BJSC entry makes an appearance at #222 for Mecha Maiko, the first entry of Leww's to be seen in the countdown. 'Phones' is a rather great upbeat synthy dance tune so it unsurprisingly made a good impression with me. A place above is an anonymous dance act Hrrtz with their remake of 'Paper Aeroplane' (a song I was unfamiliar with, so quite an inspired choice of song to cover really), with production clearly inspired by CamelPhat which I can get behind.

Commentary

Calvin Harris rebranded as Love Regenerator this year and under that alias has five entries in the rundown this year (his collab with The Weeknd failed to make it). First off at #220 is 'Moving', his collab with Eli Brown who adds a great house groove to the track. Europa could potentially contend for the year-end #1 this year with 'Tequila' but for now we have 'All Day And Night' which had enough residual streaming to make the list, having been in last year's Top 20. Solardo & Paul Woolford teamed up for 'Tear It Up', and whilst overshadowed somewhat by a much bigger hit for Paul that we'll eventually get to, had a respectable run. It's another great piano house tune as you'd come to expect from him with Solardo giving it a bit of an edge. Next up is an uplifting trance anthem from Solis & Sean Truby helped by the stunning vocal of Audrey Gallagher. 'Skin Deep' starts as it means to go on with a thumping beat.. [[listen to song insert more commentary]]. Tiësto makes his first appearance at #216 with current single 'The Business', which could potentially do some business in the real chart next year as it's been starting to climb. It's a very catchy dancepop track anyhow which is one of the better examples of this current trend of having a deep pitched vocal in a dance track.

Commentary

Purple Disco Machine has had a great year with remixes of 'Rain On Me' and 'Don't Start Now' helping them further up the chart alongside two of his own songs. The first of these is 'In My Arms' at #215, true to his name it's another disco track of his which was also a former BJSC entry. Diplo teamed up with Sidepiece, introducing them to the world with tech house banger 'On My Mind', helped here by its unexpected minor chart success giving it a third wind in my chart. Avicii had my EOY #5 with 'Tough Love' and it now becomes the first of him we see in this rundown. Expect last year's #1 'Heaven' to appear much further up this chart. Another BJSC song now at #212 coming from Russians Cream Soda & HLEB - it is unsurprisingly the only song sang in Russian to appear in the countdown. 'Plachu Na Tekhno' is a great techno inspired banger as the title suggests, it has just the right amount of techno in it for me. A place above we have Solardo again this time alongside Armand & Hervé for a re-done version of their 'Power of Bass', an improvement over the original version with it being given a big boost of energy.

Commentary

TheFatRat will be making a couple more appearances later on but for now we have 'Close To The Sun' which was sadly released too close to the year's end for it to have made a yearly top 100, instead settling for a 151-210 dip. It became his 3rd #1 on my chart and he has since had another one. The song reworks one of his 2018 tracks into a fully fleshed out track with strings and vocals. At #209 is yet another BJSC discovery, another find from Thelonia this time from Ross Quinn with the very deep and smooth 'Away With Me'. Disclosure's comeback this year started with 'Ecstasy', a very standard song for them but it does its job. More was to come very quickly so this didn't last as long as it perhaps would've if it was a standalone effort. Alan Fitzpatrick is next in what was an unlikely departure from his usual techno that I'm not so keen on, with a remix of 'Haven't You Heard' - ironically a song that I hadn't heard of before. It works well with a house beat under it however. Yves V is another hangover with 'We Got That Cool' outperforming anything new he released this year.

Commentary

Just bubbling under the top 200 now firstly is another BJSC entry (there seems to be one in every section) from Kah-Lo. Best known for being on every Riton song, she left him for the 'Exit Sign' and all the better for it as it's the best song she's done in years. Lumïsade remixed Late Night Alumni's 'Empty Streets' into last year's Top 20, and this year followed it up with 'Red', a similarly themed progressive trance track which had one of the year's longest runs for a top 40 miss. Electronic producer Ben Böhmer managed to get his first proper hit in my chart this year at last with 'Cappadocia', named as such after he played there in a hot air balloon. The track also interestingly has a tempo switch right in the middle of it, not something you often get. Tensnake is also here with sleeper hit 'Make You Mine', one of the more accessible tracks of his as of recent for being a great standard dancepop tune. Which means Sofi Tukker & Gorgon City sit just outside with 'House Arrest'. Credit has to be given to them for making this song clearly inspired by Quarantine not feel like a gimmick and work on the virtual dance floor. It's got an excellent bassline too.

Never Seen The Rain was an alright song but sadly never grabbed me as much as Johnny Run Away / Dance Monkey. A fan of On My Mind (that bizarre video is iconic) and The Business looking to be at least soe sort of a hit come the new year. Big fan of House Arrest as well!

Giving Paper Aeroplane a listen now, a decent dance track, I quite like the beat in it.

Commentary

Starting off the top 200 we have Above & Beyond with the help of melodic house producer Enamour on 'Homecoming', a remix of one of their chill out album tracks which became Enamour's first hit here. It's a lush instrumental accompanied with strings and a laidback groove. Roberto Surace is at #199 with 'Joys', another leftover from last year which remains his only hit of any description. 2020 has not been a great year for Jonas Blue who failed to get any real chart hits although this one with Paloma Faith should've done something really, it was pleasant enough to make my top 40 briefly which is more than a couple of his proper hits did. Don Diablo continued to release frequently this year with varying rates of success in my chart. He has a few more to come but until then we have middling hit 'We Are Love' which is about standard for a song of his really. Ella Henderson's most recent single was also released just in time to make the top 200, helped by a sample of 00s fave 'Another Chance' alongside her great vocal performance. A big shame that this didn't even reach the UK top 100, really, so I've linked it below in case you did miss it. Ella will be making a couple more appearances including her Jax Jones collab which is a top 10 contender.

Commentary

Gareth Emery's second appearance is another hangover from last year, the brilliant energetic instrumental track 'Mezzanine'. TheFatRat is also here again with 'Rule the World'. The track is his most recent single and is the only track in this rundown to feature a K-pop singer in AleXa, although this song is entirely in English. It's got a hook so catchy it's almost annoying but in a fun way and has the glitch hop production that he is best known for. Nora En Pure has had a great year with her having 6 entries. The first of these is 'Delta' which is one of her classic piano-led deep house tracks, sounding lush as ever. Franky Wah is here with BJSC winner 'Hide', which also got my 18 points in the contest. It remains my fave of his tracks yet with a great CamelPhatty house beat. Disclosure's 2nd appearance here is their hip-hop/garage effort 'My High', a bit of a different sound for them and not my favourite thing they've ever done but it works, I do enjoy that bassline. I do think Slowthai wasn't really needed on the song however.

'Dream On Me' deserved to do well. Seems the public really aren't here for Ella nowadays or only are in rare cases.

Dream On Me peaked early then dropped off very quickly for me unfortunately! We Are Love was an okay song from Don but he has released much better (hope some of the songs of his I like are the ones that will be up later!)

Commentary

Trance producer ilan Bluestone unveiled his Uplifting alias Stoneblue earlier this year, so far he has only released this one song under the alias featuring one of my favourite trance vocalists in Emma Hewitt too. Grum is sandwiched by Nora En Pure with his largely instrumental track 'The Ascent', which has a short vocal sample of 'Don’t Fear The Reaper'. He has a #1 contender this year with the song 'Afterglow'. Nora's tracks 'Homebound' and 'Bartok' make the list, two great instrumental tracks done in her usual style accompanied by some great strings. Lastly, a song you may have actually heard of from Kygo who brought Zara Larsson back to the chart with 'Like It Is'. A fairly standard track for him, it does nothing new but is a good effort anyhow.

Commentary

Watermät started off the chart year with 'Raise' which would prove to be his best release of recent times. It also finally brought Sneaky Sound System to the chart with it being the first song of theirs I've cared for since their handful of late 00s releases. Mysterious dance act N.F.I got an instant hit in my chart helped by its Riton feature putting it on my radar, it's a rather good generic dance bop although it contains a chorus which goes 'don't talk to me' immediately followed by 'we can talk just give me a moment', a bit of a mixed message there. AJ Tracey & Mabel got together to make 'Ladbroke Grove' part 2, considering that track was in my top 100 last year this clearly wasn't quite as good for me but still a good effort and his best of the year, even if Mabel's parts seem to have nothing to do with AJ's. Armand van Helden proved he can still make a good tune when he wants to as well with the classic house inspired 'Step It Up', complete with classic diva vocals (and a brilliant intro). Finally a bit of an odd entry for Chicane who gets his classic 'Saltwater' in the rundown, helped by a new remix although it is actually the original version which I gave more plays to - one of the best songs of the 90s for me.

Commentary

We have a number of Avicii tracks to get through as ever, it is a year end chart of mine after all. A bunch of his unreleased tracks leaked early in the year; a few earlier than that too but I felt it best to wait until after the officially released posthumous album. Anyhow the first of these on this list is another track he did with Aloe Blacc in 'I Wanna Be Free'. It does make sense this one not having got a proper release, with it being unfinished, but regardless it still sounds very much like an Avicii track and would have sat very well on 'True' with a bit of extra polishing. Next is trance producer Ashley Wallbridge who you may recognise for having released an album with Gareth Emery last year and flooding my chart with its singles - including my EOY #02 with 'Amber Sun'. One of his few solo releases since, 'Still Alive' is a rather emotional track inspired by his battle with Meningitis which sadly nearly killed him. At #178 is someone I wasn't expecting to see ever make my EOY chart again in Mr Overexposed himself Ed Sheeran, although it is as a feature for Stormzy who is the main selling point of the song, 'Own It' is one of his most commercial efforts yet but a rather heartfelt track which works. Leading producers of slap house Vize are next with their most recent hit 'Paradise', which is the first of two songs for them in the countdown. It is also the only song in the chart to feature a German rapper in Joker Bra (aka Capital Bra). His contribution certainly makes the song rather interesting even if I don't understand a word he is saying. Arty had a few songs in the chart last year, this year however hasn't been as good for him and he just has 'You're Not Alone', a rather good piece of anthemic EDM reminiscent of the early 10s.

Commentary

Kas:st were a unknown electronic act for me until introduced via BJSC with techno thumper 'Hell On Earth', a song actually released last year but seemingly perfectly made for what 2020 has been, with its dark soundscape and a well chosen sample from the 1976 film 'Network'. It is quite eery how relevant the "lyrics" are today considering its age, but anyhow it fits very well with the techno synths here which sound expertly produced - there's certainly a lot more to it than the average techno song which of course helped it into a medal position for Summericia in the contest. I am still yet to listen to any of their other material but I perhaps should given the quality of this. Next up is Armin van Buuren, appearing again with 'La Résistance De L'Amour' which was in my top 10 last year. The song isn't his highest peaking chart hit for me having missed the top five, however it is now my all-time favourite of his overtaking 'This Is What It Feels Like'. It's a proper anthemic progressive trance track (and mostly instrumental), with stuttering synths and many other little things added to keep the song interesting, as well as a really good breakdown section that does its job of building the track up perfectly. Another BJSC discovery is up next this time from Klangkarussell & Givven, and with a song that became another winner for Aeroche. The former act of course appeared in my chart with their one hit 'Sonnentanz' back in the day, and finally shook off their one-hit wonder status in my chart with this track. It is a very different sound for them than what they were known for with its dark and moody synths, and is also a track that has a brilliant build ultimately paying off past the 4 minute mark – I have grown to like this sort of structure with a few of my own BJSC entries this year having likewise being long and peaking late. At #172 is another unofficially released Avicii track, this time alongside his old friend Sandro Cavazza who we'll be seeing a fair bit of in this countdown. He's pitched up on this track as is often the case with his Avicii collabs, and is another classic-sounding Avicii record that I think really should've had a proper release, and I'm sure if it were in properly mastered full HQ it'd be a fair bit higher in the chart. Finally we have the first of two appearances for Megan Thee Stallion. 'Savage' took off for her somewhat before getting a big boost thanks to the Beyoncé remix, and although I've gone back to preferring the original version now they did a great job of remixing it, putting in a fair bit more effort than is typical for a 'featured artist' pop remix. It's got a catchy hook and great swagger from Megan, making it one of my personal fave rap hits of the year.

The Scotts was certainly one of Travis's more interesting songs of recent times.
Strange that the collab seems to be a one-off at the moment given they gave themselves a group name for it and Kid Cudi's moved on to do his own album now though.

It is so sad. I'll never stan an artist like I did with him again too, his output was so consistently amazing.
There'll be a handful more of his unreleased songs to come, along with Heaven, Fades Away, Forever Yours and... Levels (yes really, that is still in the running).

Commentary

Just Kiddin & Camden Cox are in for another year with 'Stay The Night', having made my top 100 last year. The song remains my favourite from either artist and although Camden has a few songs yet to appear, it is the only appearance from Just Kiddin. The vocal chops and bassline in the drop make it amazingly catchy in particular. Chicane is here again with another old song of his 'No Ordinary Morning', although this is primarily here from The Thrillseekers remix which they did for the 20th anniversary album re-release. The original is a great ambient track which sadly was one of the worst-performing follow-ups to a #1 single of the 00s, which I have come around to appreciate more this year. The new remix albeit a bit more dancey keeps a reasonably chill vibe with lush synths throughout. Gareth Emery is here again, it was only a matter of time considering he has the most appearances in the rundown this year. It's the second album track from 'The Lasers' to appear out of seven and also the track that opens the album (ignoring a 30 second intro which acts as an extension to this song), quite appropriately given the title and its lyrics about making a start of your life. It also features... Gareth himself doing some vocals! Although I am glad that he gave most of the song to Annabel, as he's easily a better producer than singer. Camden Cox has a 2nd appearance already now with 'Healing', the only song of hers here without a credited producer although it is another dance effort. The song is also yet another BJSC discovery in the rundown, having finished 2nd in the contest for Hendinia. The song has some lush deep house inspired production and a great vocal performance from Camden who really proved herself as one of the top dance vocalists this year - let's hope more is to come soon. At #166 we have another rap song this time from Darkoo, a rare British female rapper who had a hit although she's seemingly been forgotten about already about as quickly as she arrived. 'Gangsta' is a smooth RnB track that sounds similar to many other afrobeats tracks that've been hits but was more interesting for me.

Commentary

i_o & Lights released a collaborative EP earlier this year which scored them two chart hits for me, the first of these is 'Epilogue', with great progressive house production reminiscent of early deadmau5 material. It's quite eery lyrically however considering i_o sadly passed away not long ago, with lyrics and a song title that in hindsight seem to relate to the end of one's life. Lady Gaga has had a great year, getting all three of her singles in this rundown. The first of these is '911' which was just above the middle of my album ranking initially but its great music video gave it a second run later on. Trance group Fatum also have three songs in the rundown this year and the first is their most recent hit 'Train To Nowhere'. They seem to have perfected big melodic trance drops but unfortunately only about half of their singles are in this style. A place above we have one of the most talked about singles of the year from Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion, the only song Cardi put out this year but this alone ensured she stayed relevant. For me it definitely works for what it is, with it going all out to be as explicit as possible over a minimalist beat whilst not taking the song too seriously. Back to dance music again at #161 with Anabel Englund, 'So Hot' being another BJSC boosted hit (although I knew of it before it was sent). She has a lovely voice but most of her songs don't do enough in the production for me to really love them, this however is great thanks to MK on the remix.

Commentary

DJ Licious continued to have a longer chart career than I expected getting another top 10 hit in 2020 with 'Atmosphere'. This one is quite different for him being mid-tempo and borderline synthpop. It goes all out for the drop which most of his other recent material hasn't really done for me. Next up is a song you're all familiar with albeit in a new version with Tinlicker remaking the classic trance hit 'Children'. Tinlicker are one of the leaders in melodic house so if anyone could take on such a classic and make it even half as good it was them. The tempo is slowed but it keeps the best elements of the original putting them alongside Tinlicker's trademark production style. A place above we have drum n' bass producer Metrik, not to be confused with the band Metric who've never made my chart. DnB doesn't usually make my chart so impressively he has two entries in the countdown this year, proving himself as one of the best (though I still need to listen to the album). 'We Are The Energy' does indeed bring the energy and is a great bit of melodic DnB, reminiscent of that short time period where songs like this could be minor UK hits. Jorn van Deynhoven is also here with two songs, the first of which is 'Afterlight' at #157. He released his debut album this year which nearly made my top 10 of the year but unfortunately it will also be his last as he just recently announced his retirement. It's a great bit of uplifting trance. Camden Cox also pops her head in yet again this time alongside Leftwing : Kody on 'Without You'. For once we get a section without a BJSC entry, albeit only because this track got vetoed. It's well worth a listen if it did pass you by though, a great bit of CamelPhat style house. I do love a good pulsing bassline.

Commentary

TheFatRat's 3rd appearance here is 'The Storm', an interesting track from him with the song being half-sung in... Na'vi (the language from "Avatar")! It's got some great production quirks in it too including a flutey bit. The token one song of the section that you've heard of is next from Dua Lipa. 'Break My Heart' is the first of three songs for her in the countdown. It's a great disco pop track from her again proving herself as one of the saviours of pop music. It also had the great timing of coming out during lockdown with the lyric "I should've stayed at home". Another unreleased Avicii song is up next, this time featuring Chris Martin who he more famously worked with on 'Heaven' (last year's #1 song). This one isn't half as good so I won't complain at it having been left off the album in the place of 'Heaven' but at least it got to see the light of day through the leaks, it is another great song from them with a great guitar riff and catchy hook about the most lethal drug of them all... love. DJ D-Sol is at #152 with the first of two songs for him in the countdown. On paper he is a person you'd least expect to be an EDM producer, being literally the CEO of investment banking company Goldman Sachs. However the song is undeniably a great dance bop. Another DnB track completes the section this time coming from Dimension, an artist who once gave me one of my biggest BJSC hits. He is now on his way towards releasing a debut album with this being one of the first singles taken from it, 'Love To Give'. Similarly to the Metrik song from the last section it is one of his more accessible tunes with a strong melody.

Gangsta was definitely one of the better rap songs in the chart last/this year, always got me shuffling my feet when it came on in the charts.

Didn't realise Billy Lockett had been on a dance track this year - giving a listen now, sounding quite good! I'm a fan of his solo stuff but can't imagine it being your cup of tea.

it is one of the highest rap songs in my countdown so I'd have to agree.
I seem to remember one of his songs making BJSC, and I wasn't a fan, so I suppose it wouldn't be. Glad you like the song though.

Commentary

Starting off the top 150 is Armin van Buuren with the first of three collabs with Avira on this countdown, although it is my favourite it didn't have enough time to rack up the necessary chart points. It is an 8-minute epic quite unlike anything Armin has done before, with the first 3 minutes being totally beat-less with just the atmosphere and an impressive emotional vocal from Sam Martin. Although he does make it very difficult to make out what he's saying, the song is about having to wear a mask albeit not one of the physical Covid-preventing type, but more about the difficulty of revealing your true self. It is a real journey of a song that ultimately ends on a sad note with the mask going back up. Italian rapper Anna is next with 'Bando', a song that made #1 in their chart early in the year but I only found whilst doing research for my Worldvision entry. I didn't send it but ultimately went on to be a bigger hit than what I did end up sending. It is an impressively catchy song for something not in English with a great simple-sounding dance beat to go alongside her quick flow. Christina Novelli is here again, this time with 'Beautiful Life', a song with lovely lyrics about holding on to the life you've got which soon goes into a trance breakdown, what's not to love? She has 3 more songs to come although all of them are with credited producers. Another vocal trance effort is a place above from Robbie Seed & That Girl (actual name). They were put on my radar by a song that'll appear much later in the rundown, with 'My Remedy' acting as their follow-up. It's a great bit of uplifting trance. Ella Henderson has her 2nd appearance with 'Take Care of You', the first solo single of hers that made my chart in many years. It was great to have her go down the dance-pop route for her solo tracks, as her voice very much suits the style and I wasn't keen on the ballad she put out last year. The song is a very care-free and happy song which was welcome to hear from her.

Commentary

Coming back into prominence this year in dance music was Karen Harding, who got her first top 40 hit in years for me with 'Rely'. The track is an upbeat dance bop which interpolates 'Islands In The Stream', but thankfully isn't a cover of the song. It has a great MK piano house feel to it and Karen again proves her vocal talent. The long awaited return of Rihanna finally happened this year, although not in the form anyone really asked for as it was just her singing a couple of lines and harmonising in a PartyNextDoor song. Nonetheless that was enough for the song to fly straight into my top 10 and land in my top 150 of the year. It is rather good for the type of song it is though, with a nice laidback guitar sample beat, and PND's bits are decent enough to keep the song going in-between Rihanna's chorus. After sitting out of my chart for all of 2019 Dynoro finally lost his OHW status in my chart with 'Me Provocas', a rework of the Fumaratto song that I'd never heard of, and having skimmed the original after the fact, it is certainly a big improvement. It has the signature slap house sound that Dynoro is one of the leaders of alongside some Spanish vocals, me gusta! Nora En Pure is back again too this time with one of the biggest hits she's had in years - although it finds itself split between years and will most likely reach a higher position in next year's Chart. 'Wetlands' also finds itself in the current BJSC where it is being tipped as a winning contender, if only I'd got to it first! It's a real beauty of a song though taking all the best bits of Nora's style; with piano, strings and even a flute and harp in there. The atmosphere of the track really takes you to these 'wetlands' in a musical sense. To follow we have Love Regenerator who you may also know as Calvin Harris! It is the 2nd track of his to appear in the rundown, with it being the first track he officially unveiled from the project. Instantly he lets you know this ain't Calvin in the usual commercial style, but instead we get a full on rave/breakbeat track, along with a load of squeaking and a piano taken straight out of the 90s. It's not my favourite style he's ever done but great for the track that it is.

Commentary

One of the world's biggest DJs, Brazil's Vintage Culture finally made an impact in my chart this year with 'In The Dark'. The track is a great CamelPhat inspired dance track, which also got some song contest success being sent into Worldvision a few months after it had charted. Now on to one of Germany's biggest dance acts in Vize, a duo who have had a rapid increase of popularity this year. The track 'Never Let Me Down' is their best song yet and sounds like a song that could've easily been a crossover hit, fusing their style with a pop friendly hook. It didn't get any UK push unfortunately but it does have over 100 million Spotify streams. Super8 & Tab finished last year at #3 with one of the biggest hits of the decade in 'Burn'. They don't quite manage another top 100 year-end hit this year with their biggest hit being a Christina Novelli collab in 'Rooftops' (yep she's back again already). It's another anthemic trance track from them helped by a great vocal. Ytram is a name you may not recognise but he is in fact an alias of the better known Martin Garrix! He unveiled himself behind the alias in time for his second release under the name, although some fans suspected it beforehand as it is literally Marty spelt backwards. 'Fire' is in collaboration with Elderbrook which also got him his biggest hit in the chart since 'Cola'. It's a great melodic house track with clear CamelPhat influences (I seem to be namedropping them all the time but such is their impact on EDM at the moment) and a direction I'd be happy for him to continue down (and as it happens Ytram has a new release today). Armin van Buuren is also back again with the second of his three collabs with Avira. 'Illusion' is the sole instrumental track they did together and is a great cross between trance and melodic house. I haven't loved any of Avira's solo material yet but he seems to work very well alongside Armin.

Commentary

Jorn van Deynhoven appears again with 'I Need Your Lovin', the highest of his two songs in the rundown. The song is another cover of the Korgis song, now done in an uplifting trance style. This was already done by Marc et Claude in the early 00s but this version sounds more grandiose and the best version of the song I've heard yet. Another cover version is up next from Gamper & Dadoni, taking on the classic Abba hit 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!'. The song was actually a discovery from Sergej's personal chart although it was a hit single in Germany. It's a faithful take on the song, making it reasonably dancey but keeping the elements of the original that made it what it is (although I do wish they could've used a better vocal, if sampling the original was clearly off the table). A place above is Sam Feldt who followed up 'Post Malone' with an Ella Henderson collab in 'Hold Me Close', and almost reaching the same EOY position in the process (PM made #127). The song was perfectly timed for lockdown with the lyric "let's stay home" being prominent in the song, and is rather uptempo by his standards. A song worth checking out even if you didn't like his two actual hit singles. Gareth Emery pops his face in again at #132 with another album track of his 'I Saw Your Face'. It's a more subdued effort for him, with all the big synths gone. It is a welcome change of style though, and Annabel provides another lovely vocal on it. Lastly we have... an actual massive hit single in 'Say So' from Doja Cat, although it was more of a sleeper hit in my chart. The song is a great pop track with disco throwback production, with Doja sounding very sensual on the record. She hasn't had another track half as good for me so far however, it looks like this may well be a one-off.

Wetlands is definitely one of the best BJSC entries this contest and possibly the best I've heard from Nora as well. Never Let Me Down was a brilliant tune and *checks spreadsheet* be appearing in my EOY as well.

Commentary

The section starts off with another BJSC discovery, this time from The Subs vs. Tsar B. 'Flesh & Blood' has a great pounding techno beat and ravetastic synth drop lead giving it big energy, securing it 18 Danævii points. We say hello to Sir Armin van Buuren again too, he actually still has three songs left to go but for now we have a leftover from last year in 'It Could Be', which just about made the top 100 despite a late September release last year, if only it were timed better it could've contended for Top 40. It's a great dance pop bop which heavily samples Inner City's 'Good Life', so much that they even get an official credit on the song. A complete unknown DJ in Josement managed to get a big hit in DJ land and also in my chart with 'All Night Alone', helped muchly by Chris Lake who beefed up the production. The song has to win the award for most drunk sounding vocals but it works with the vibe of the song, a great melodic tech house track. One of the earliest big hits of 2020 sits at #127, and is the first of two appearances for Roddy Ricch. 'The Box' very much stood out in its field, a difficult feat considering the large number of trap songs around at the moment. It has to be one of the best produced rap hits of the year, with its orchestral textures, hi-hats and reverse 808s all helping it in that department. However Roddy proves his worth as a rapper on the track showing off his flow and giving us some catchy melodic hooks that helped it take off so much on TikTok before it officially became a single. Duke Dumont has two appearances in the rundown and the highest of these is 'Nightcrawler', which is also the highest track in the countdown that missed the weekly top 50. It proved itself as a big sleeper hit, helped by it having a great remix from Tensnake alongside the original version. Both versions were even attempted to BJSC but ultimately given the Veto. The original track is in a similar style to 'Ocean Drive' which works very well for him, it seems very much made for a late night drive, whilst Tensnake houses it up a bit. Worth checking out if it passed you by from him being no longer able to score chart hits.

It's such a good song, I'm a big fan of Nora En Pure's output but 'Wetlands' really is special for her.

I'm not quite sure if it's my absolute favourite of hers, we'll have to see in time. 'Trailblazer' which I sent to BJSC I really adore and has over 100 plays. It's certainly already a big highlight in her discography however.

Commentary

Trance group Fatum make their 2nd appearance at #125 with 'Wait For The World', which was their first hit of the year in my chart. It is a big melodic trance effort which was a return to form for them, having not had any songs enter the top 40 in 2019. At #124 we have an unlikely appearance from Todd Terry. The veteran DJ is best known for his 90s work but as it turns out he's still active now and teamed up with Tobtok, Richard Judge & Oliver Nelson for 'All Of Me', a rather nice and groovy house track. Martin Garrix is up next, with his highest track in the rundown 'Used To Love'. It was a big surprise to me that a collab with Dean Lewis (whose one big world hit I disliked) would turn out to be his best track of the year, but here we are. It's a well written and sung dancepop track. Icarus had sat the last two years of the year-end chart out after getting two songs in the 2017 top 40. They're now back with 'Dreams Of You', a great electronica track which features a lovely vocal from Rae Morris (who hadn't seen my personal chart since 2014 beforehand, so it was a bit of a surprise to see her back). 2020 was also a good year for songs titled 'In Your Eyes', with three of them making my weekly top 50. The biggest of those comes from Robin Schulz at #121. This is 120 positions lower than his peak in a year-end chart, having topped it with his 'Waves' remix in 2014. However, this track was somewhat of a return to form for him being his biggest hit in quite a few years. It is helped by a strong melody and vocal from Alida (who we'll see again in the top 100) and the production having a bit more life to it than many of his other recent tracks.

In Your Eyes and Used to Love were both great dance tracks from the start of the year! Both hung around in my Top 40 for quite a while. Giving the Icarus/Rae song a listen now, another song I'm quite enjoying and I think would be a grower for me.

Just catching up with this so far...

Good to see Play hanging on from last year as well as Nopus, In Your Eyes (The Weeknd's one) and Therapy making it into the top 250. Not surprised to see Gareth Emery doing well in your chart this year once again, glad to see St Mary's in particular though, love the connection to Southampton in those lyrics!

Trevor Daniel's Falling was pretty good but it already feels a bit forgotten, agreed about it sounding like a Post Malone/Juice WRLD track and that's not a bad comparison to have at all! The Business is also decent, glad it's finally making an impact and hopefully it does climb further in the UK chart.

Never Let Me Down is one that I only discovered a few months ago and it's one I've been playing regularly ever since! Agreed about that having potential to be a crossover hit in a parallel universe where that song got a proper UK push.

In Your Eyes (Robin Schulz this time!) is great too, I listened to that a lot for the first few months of the year! Used To Love was good but surprised that it's your highest Martin Garrix track in the rundown this year though, Higher Ground is one of my favourite songs of the year!

Plenty of other good songs in there too, looking forward to seeing the top 120.

Commentary

Veteran electronic and trance producer BT is here with two songs; one of them yet to come that you may recognise from BJSC but not this one - 'Windows' is an album track that was an instant stand-out from giving the whole thing a listen, one of the more pop-friendly tracks on the record. It has a banging drop and great hook to it. The most familiar face of my chart this year in Gareth Emery is back again at #119, but don't worry because he still has a whopping seven entries in the Top 100! 'Gunshots' is one of the more mid tempo tracks on his latest record, and quite a sad track having been inspired by the many incidents of shootings in America (and it also coincidentally came out around the time of the Riots). David Guetta is at #118 with 'Let's Love', which perhaps could've been Top 100 if it came out a little bit earlier. The song is yet another collaboration with Sia but unfortunately that wasn't enough to make the song a proper hit single, for shame! It is a great track inspired by the recent 80s synth pop trend, with it sounding a lot like 'Love Is A Battlefield' in particular. It's an upbeat track melodically and lyrically with much needed hope. A place higher we have faceless dance act Brunelle featuring an unknown female. 'Cheat On Me' is admittedly a very generic dance track but it is very uptempo and catchy which is sometimes all you need. I like the subversion of expectations here that the song turned out to be the opposite of a cheating/breakup song. Whilst we still wait for the much anticipated second album of Porter Robinson's (the first one came out in 2014!) he released a handful of singles. Sadly the comeback release 'Get Your Wish' didn't live up to my expectations but the two follow-ups were great and both appear in this here chart. Firstly we have 'Something Comforting', a track that would fit very well on the first album actually but Porter is very unique and outstanding as a producer so that is absolutely fine with me.

Commentary

Porter Robinson has his 2nd and last appearance already as 'Mirror' ends up just one place ahead of 'Something Comforting'. It is my favourite track he has released from the forthcoming album so far which is promising for the record. It's a great electronic pop track with a lot going on in the production. David Guetta is also here with 'Make It To Heaven', the highest track he has in the rundown this year. It is helped by having two great versions, the festival ready banger of the original and the more mellow radio friendly rework (which I slightly prefer). Raye does another great vocal here proving herself as one of the best dance vocalists, indeed we'll be seeing more of her much further up the chart. Including a collab with Regard, who is next up with 'Ride It'. It's got a great groove to it and Regard deserves the credit for turning such a dull Jay Sean song into something enjoyable. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as you may've expected, considering it being one of the biggest dance songs of last year, but I do like the vibe the song's going for and it ended up having some strong staying power in my chart. The song had some very unfortunate timing to end up just missing out on a Top 100 position twice, with the song having a lot of recurrence plays into the new year and getting a new lease of life following 'Secrets'. Marshall Jefferson is at #112 with a reworking of his 80s house classic 'Move Your Body' from Solardo. They set the track right into 2020 keeping the arrangement faithful to the original but adding a more modern drum groove. It's just what the song needed really making it a right banger. A place above we have London Grammar with their comeback single. I wasn't particularly anticipating their return having not enjoyed their last singles run but they brought along some more electronic production courtesy of George Fitzgerald and it eventually grew on me a fair bit providing them their first top 10 hit that wasn't a remix. Her lush voice really works well with this type of production and it is something I hope we hear more of on the album.

Didn't realise you were that much of a Robin Schulz hater, or that his music was offensive to anyone. Oh well. At least we're not in 2014 where he was #1 by quite some way, I guess. (and Waves is still in my all time Top 10)

Hope to see both make your year end list then! Glad you quite enjoy that Icarus song I recommended too.

Nopus should end up a lot higher for me next year as it's already proving itself to have great longevity in my chart.
It doesn't take a lot of reading my personal charts to figure out I may be a bit of a Gareth Emery fan haha. I'm not from Southampton but I do quite like how personal the lyrics are to him.
You may think Falling feels forgotten but it is well on its way to a billion Spotify streams! It's not a song I'll be going back to often most likely however.
I think The Business could end up being a UK top 10 hit, I'm glad it is getting a push.
Unfortunately I couldn't really get into Higher Ground, it just didn't do it for me. Used To Love is great though.

Karen Harding had her biggest hit in years in 2020 with 'Undo My Heart', which starts off this section. It was surprisingly good for me considering production was by Digital Farm Animals who is usually not to my taste, but he puts in a great dance beat here. It looked like at one point it would get some sort of chart push but that was never to happen sadly. Markus Schulz is next with what was his biggest hit of the year in 'Indestructible', a collab with none other than his actual wife on vocals! The track is fairly standard pop-trance but done well. Another trance track is next from Andrew Rayel, doing his signature big room trance on 'Never Going Down' with a great vocal from Roxanne Emery. He has another track yet to appear a lot higher up in the countdown with this acting as its follow-up. This section's token one actual hit single is from DaBaby, a rapper who was very much due a proper big hit and finally had it with 'Rockstar' being not only that but the biggest song of the summer. It is very much one of the best rap hits of the year with both rappers on the track showing off their fast flow accompanied by a nice acoustic guitar loop. I think this is the highest rap song that doesn't feature Drake actually which is impressive for two rappers with not much of a history. Lastly we have Bicep. The electronica the duo produce isn't typically my preferred style of dance and admittedly their first album passed me by (including 'Glue' which somehow has over 50m Spotify streams) but they came back with 'Atlas' and managed to score their biggest hit yet in the process. It helps that this track is a bit more dancey from them and I love all the synths they're using in it. They certainly stand out in their genre with songs like this and 'Apricots' and I'm hopeful for their 2nd album to be great.

Commentary

Starting off the final section before the top 100 we have Craig Connelly with the first of two appearances just outside the top 100 with 'Time Machine'. It is a great uplifting trance track inspired by classic trance records. This type of trance is sadly quite underrated these days but at least we have some people like Craig keeping it alive. Love Regenerator is next with 'Peace Love Happiness'. The song was actually the first song from the project that I heard as it got leaked and shared by a Facebook page I follow, however this was before Calvin Harris unveiled the alias. It did eventually get an official release thankfully under his 3rd EP. It's a great mostly instrumental track inspired by classic house. Miley Cyrus is unlucky enough to fall at #103, just a week away from getting enough points to reach the top 100. However her even getting this high with a solo record is unprecedented. She did of course have her Mark Ronson collab reach #1 in my chart but 'Midnight Sky' was still surprisingly great for me considering some of the shockers she has released in her career. It is a great 80s inspired record with Miley using her vocal to the best of her ability too, unsurprisingly a song massively adored by Buzzjack and also a big proper hit. At #102 we have perhaps the only instance of two songs taking up the same chart position in the rundown in 'Life Is Good', the Future & Drake "Collaboration". I joke but it is a bit of a tune, it's one of the best produced rap hits of the year and has one of the best music videos of the year too (no surprise that it's well past a billion views). Finally just missing out on a top 100 placement is Avicii, oh well, he does have plenty of year-end top 100s to his name anyway and he'll have a few more this year. 'Lord' is another unreleased track from him that had been one of the most anticipated by the fanbase ever since snippets of it came out years ago and it was amongst this year's leaks. It is another Sandro Cavazza collab albeit with his vocal being heavily processed again, and is a bit more mid tempo for Avicii but with the energy of an Avicii track that you'd expect anyhow. It is a shame this track probably won't ever have a proper release as it is easily one of his best unreleased songs.

It's that time of the year now where we've got up to the Hottest 100 reveal, the 100 songs that defined the year in Thermo's hot hits. Before then let's take a little look at what we'll be seeing.

Move Your Body was one of the dance tracks that did grab me after a few listens! Very catchy. Peace Love Happintess also charted for me but unfortunately not as memorable.

Giving Mirror a listen now, quite enjoying this one as well! Could definitely see it growing quite a bit.

Commentary

Starting off the Hottest 100 of the year we have DJ D-Sol with the 2nd of his two appearances. 'Electric' also features Hayley May who you may remember from featuring on Joel Corry hit 'Sorry'. The track is a great commercial house tune which is in a similar style to the UK house producers getting current hits, complete with the piano chord stabs. Love Regenerator makes an appearance next with the first of two tracks of his this year to make the top 100. 'CP-1' was the 2nd track officially unveiled from the new project premiering shortly after 'Hypnogogic'. However it is this track that I prefer. It saw him unexpectedly go down the techno route which he of course did very well. At #98 we have John Summit who was introduced to the world with one of the biggest DJ-land hits of the year in 'Deep End'. It became one of the biggest tech house songs of the year in my chart too, helped by the great vocal sample that seemed to be on a lot of producers radars this year. A fair bit seems to be going on in the production too which you don't always get for these types of songs, keeping it interesting for its repetitiveness. Solardo & Eli Brown just about make the top 100 as a collaboration for a 2nd year too, having followed up 'XTC' with 'My Life'. The track is a reworking of the 90s hit that I wasn't too familiar with so it was good as new for me, whilst not quite as good as 'XTC' it is in a similar style with it being a big house tune. Tinlicker are at #96 with their highest entry here. 'Lost' became their first big hit in my chart and only recently just got outdone by their Robert Miles reworking that appeared earlier in the chart. It is a great progressive house track with a slow build that I strongly considered as a BJSC potential but ultimately it is very similar to a track I did end up sending that'll appear a lot higher in the countdown. It's got some lush synths and even a strings breakdown section making it a great listen every time, it's a song I think really should've appeared a bit higher in this list but numbers don't lie.

Commentary

One of my most recent BJSC entries, and my most successful of the year in 'Somebody Loves You' from Aly & Fila and Plumb is next to appear. The song managed 5 weeks at #1 in the tracking period and has since gone on to spend another 3 weeks at the top including being the Christmas number one! It's a big shame that the points system here means it has to settle for #95 this year but I'm sure it'll be a lot higher in 2021. It's a truly excellent and beautiful song with some lyrics that I really needed to hear in the year that was 2020. Not to mention the production here is outstanding, the best I've heard from Aly & Fila. The track may be as long as 6 minutes but not a second is wasted, the first half being focused on Plumb's vocal before going into a strings breakdown and finally a whole minute of energetic and full tranceyness. It may just be perfection in a song!! A place above we have MK with '2AM'. The track saw him reunite with '17' vocalist Carla and she actually got an official credit for her efforts this time. The song isn't half as good (with '17' currently being in my top 20 of all time) but undeniably a fun piano house bop the kind of which MK seems to effortlessly be able to do and still better than many others trying to imitate. Another BJSC entry of mine is next at #93 coming from F.O.O.L and The Forgotten. Neither of them had had a hit before in my chart but I thought the song title seemed interesting so I checked it out and needless to say I was wowed! 'Dystopia 2077', unlike the similarly named game it was inspired by didn't disappoint anyone and no points refunds were asked for. It is a great bit of electro house with grandiose and synth wave inspired production plus some robotic vocals adding to the song's theme. Who doesn't love a good countdown into a drop too? At #92 we have Sir Armin van Buuren under his uplifting trance alias Rising Star, the first of 4 entries for him in the hottest 100. The track like many a good trance song has a fair chunk of it being a lovely vocal section in anticipation of the drop, it is a beautiful love song here. The drop whilst not absolutely huge sounding works well for the track and has the feel of a classic trance song. It is always great to hear Armin doing a song in this style even if only rarely whilst he's still chasing commercial hits half the time. Whilst MK & Sonny Fodera's collab didn't manage to make the rundown, they do both appear in this section with 'Before U' for Sonny making it to #91. It's another well made house track from him which features a lovely vocal from Aluna. It's fairly laidback which suits her vocal with nothing more in the production than what needs to be there.

Interesting to see 'Somebody Loves You' in this section as it's appeared in my top 100 too and a few places higher. I'm sure your eoy next year it'll be way higher though fantastic trance track anyway even if it initially did go past me but I think that's because my mind was trying to get through my first semi listen through and I was probably looking at other things at the same time lol. Glad it gave you a big bjsc smash anyhow.

Commentary

Tiësto starts off the top 90 with Mabel collab 'God Is A Dancer', the only representation either of them have in the top 100. It is one of the most poppy songs Tiësto has done yet but it does work great for what it is (and is better than what he's doing in terms of club tracks). It's a song full of hooks which puts it above his other recent commercial hits for me. At #89 is The Weeknd with what was only the biggest hit song of the year across the world and deservedly so. 'Blinding Lights' is one of those very rare songs that everyone seems to agree is an great track, although it was a bit of a sleeper hit for me being one of two tracks in the Hottest 100 without a top 40 peak. It's a great 80s synth pop inspired track with the vocals and production as great as each other, a song that'll likely be well remembered years from now too. A place above we have Disclosure with the first of three appearances from them in the top 100. One of the great things about Disclosure is their willingness to incorporate African influenced music in their songs which they do here with 'Tondo', supposedly sung in Batanga, a Cameroonian dialect. It's also got a bit of a disco feel to the production but it very much sounds like a Disclosure record. i_o & Lights are next with 'Annihilation' their second of two collaborations to appear in the rundown. This track more than any other showed just how great i_o was at progressive/electro house and for a while it seemed like he had the potential to be deadmau5's equal, the influence here is plain to see. So it was a big shame that the year ended with him having passed away at only 30 years old. At #86 we have a dance cover version and it won't be the last one either, as they were really popular this year. Swedish duo Jübel broke through with their take on 'Dancing in the Moonlight' giving it the laidback house treatment, which sounded particularly great at the start of summer. It proved to be a bit controversial but I definitely think it works well, it has a great relaxed vibe. I don't expect we'll be hearing from them again however.

Commentary

Fatum are here again and with their highest appearance in the rundown in 'City Lights', another pop-trance number from them. It's big and melodic just how I like it! Firebeatz are next up with 'Bad Habit', a song perhaps more famously covered by ATFC in the early 00s. This version takes the production right up to the present day giving it the piano house treatment but the diva vocals are still there. At #83 we have Lucas & Steve who you may remember had one of my albums of the year. The highlight of said album was the lead-in single of 'Another Life', another Avicii inspired song from them alongside a great vocal from Alida. Drum n bass man Metrik has his highest appearance at #82 with 'Gravity', a very energetic track with a great little vocal hook. It's the highest DnB song in this countdown so well done to him for that. Meanwhile Disclosure are here again with 'Douha' at #81. It's also another of their songs to feature African language vocals and brings back Fatoumata from their former #1 hit 'Ultimatum'. This one's not quite as good for me but nonetheless still one of their best of recent times, sounding like a classic Disclosure track.

Commentary

Let's jump back into the chart now that Christmas is well and truly Over. In at #80 is Australian newcomer Torren Foot. 'More Life' was another sort-of song contest discovery for me - a remix he did was sent to Club Bizarre so I checked out his other recent material and it was this track that really stood out to me. Soon afterwards it would get a vocal mix with Tinie Tempah, but it is the original version that I much prefer. Doing big tech house in a similar style to Fisher ('Losing It') along with a very good sax sample and bassline. More life certainly is what you are getting with this track and I hope to hear more goods from him in 2021. A place higher is a name you've definitely heard of in Dutch superstar DJ Oliver Heldens! He had another good year although only one of his tracks really stood out enough to make the year-end list. It's not what you may've expected in his actual hit single 'Turn Me On' however. 'Take A Chance' takes a sample from an 80s track by Material that I'd never heard of, but safe to say it definitely works as a future house banger and has a lot more punch to it in the production. Armin van Buuren & BT are next with 'Always' - 2nd of four appearance for Armin in the top 100 and first of two for BT. Whilst Armin does of course have the primary credit, it does have more of the feel of a BT record, culminating in a big prog trance breakdown that he is known for. It was quite a steady grower for me after its music video release eventually managing to outpeak itself from the album bomb debut. Key4050 appear at #77 with what is so far their sole hit single, 'I Love You' was a big favourite of A State Of Trance listeners for 2019 and that was before it even had a proper release. The duo are the collaboration of respected trance producers John O'Callaghan and Bryan Kearney and it features a great vocal from Plumb who you may remember from my BJSC entry 'Somebody Loves You' (this was nearly a BJSC entry of mine itself but clearly I wise to wait for another Plumb-sung effort). It is fairly similar to that song being a big uptempo trance number with Plumb going all out with her vocals in the chorus. Lastly we have another (probable) one-hit wonder in Robbie Doherty and Keees. - although the song actually missed the top 40 and now holds the record for the lowest-peaking track ever to have made my Hottest 100! 'Pour The Milk' is a house reworking of 'Tom's Diner' which may've took a few listens to really get but it is a well-done remake. It's fairly minimalist but I like it that way.

Commentary

Into the 2nd quarter of the top 100 now and we start with the first of two appearances for Don Diablo. It also provided Brando with an unexpected 2nd hit here as the featured singer. It's another well-done dancepop track from the Don, nothing too flashy with a more subdued drop but still featuring a little of his signature sound. Smith & Thell are next up with one of my favourite BJSC discoveries of the year which also went on to win the contest. 'Goliath' is an anthemic folk-dance track and being a big Avicii fan it was always going to have some appeal here. It sounds quite Eurovision-esque but it in the best way too alongside some lovely vocal harmony and texture. Another song from BJSC is up next although this was one of the very few to go on to be a huge UK mainstream hit as well. It was the debut appearance of Topic in my chart having been unimpressed with previous songs of his. It has a great vocal melody and bassline influenced from slap house. I even quite like the heavily processed vocal on it although it's a trend I'm not a huge fan of. Gareth Emery is here again at #72 with 'You Are', one of the non-album singles he put out at the start of the year. It's another great melodic trance track from him with a progressive feel to it. Ultimately it's not a huge standout of his recent work but he is just that good that this is only the 7th highest song of his in the rundown. Laura Brehm has 3 appearances in the top 100, the joint-most for a vocalist with Annabel this year. The first of these is one of her solo efforts 'Breathe Music'. It is a totally acoustic track which is a bit of a change with her usually appearing on dance beats, but it is such a beautiful song with some outstanding vocals and vocal texture. It's about her love for music which is rather relatable lyrically as you'd expect for someone who's been a Buzzjack regular for 10 years.

Commentary

As it turns out Gareth Emery is sandwiching Laura Brehm as another song of his is next at #70, this time the first of three songs from his album which all have vocals from Annabel. 'End of Days' has a great piano part to it and is another more song-focused effort of his, this one isn't even remotely trance but still is great. It's lyrically about how the end of a relationship rather than the end of the world however, probably for the best considering the year it came out. Don Diablo is back at #69 with 'Never Change' making the hottest 100 for a second time. The song is now firmly my favourite of his, very much helped by the inspired choice of sample, using the iconic piano line of 80s hit 'The Way It Is'. Another sample-led track is at #68 and one you're more likely to have heard of. Endor managed to make his mainstream breakthrough with tech house banger 'Pump It Up' proving that sometimes all you need is an iconic sample and a meaty kick and bass. Repetitive and minimalist as it may be, it is quite the tune. Becky Hill had a great 2020 starting it off with 'Better Off Without You', one of two tracks she has in the hottest 100. It's a great track about feeling great about a breakup which is the kind of positivity we needed this year, alongside a great commercial dance backing from Shift K3Y proving he still can make a good tune on occasion. Another hangover from last year is next in 'The City Sleeps Tonight', which remains Ben Gold's biggest hit of the year as he took a bit of a backseat in 2020. The anonymous vocalist does a standout performance on this too but it's all about the synth heavy drop for me although the energy is kept up throughout the entirety of the song which I also love. It's quite simply a very impressive vocal trance anthem and hopefully we get another like it from him next year.

Commentary

Another BJSC entry of mine is next to appear at #65, coming from synthwave act Ace Marino. I found 'Spaces' by chance towards the end of last year and it soon quickly grew on me. With the genre becoming a bigger trend this year I thought the track would get some love but it sadly DNQed instead. It's towards the bottom end of my entries ranking but I still stand by it being a bit of a tune, I love the big drop that a lot in the genre don't tend to go for, alongside its 80s synthpop influences. House DJ Zack Martino got his first hit in my chart this year too with 'Crave U', a track that was one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year and ends up at #64. It's a great commercial deep/future house track and has one of the best uses of the house organ I've heard this year. Not to mention that sexy sub bass focused drop complete with actual nice sounding vocal pitching effects. At #63 we have one of this year's hangovers from the top 10 of last year coming from Croatia Squad - 'Ven Pa Ca' ended up having one of the longest chart runs ever joining an elite few to pass 40 weeks. I've quoted the commentary I wrote last year (or to be more exact, in February of this year) at the end of the post. Believe me, we won't have a Gareth Emery song in every section - but he does appear again at #62. 'Somebody' was released right at the end of last year, intended to be the first track of the then-forthcoming album but ultimately being a non-album single. It's a bit more commercially-oriented by his standards, right down to the lyrics where Kovic fantasises about getting a million streams in one day. It still sounds like one of Emery's tracks however and has a rather great drop along with trancey synths even if it's a bit more mid-tempo for him. Joe Stone & Camden Cox appear at #61 - it's been another good year for Stone as he'll be appearing again shortly, and we've already seen a few Camden tracks earlier on. 'Mind Control' is a bit different for him, most notably because it's actually not a remake of an older song! It's got more of a deep feel to it fitting alongside Camden's hypnotic vocal.

Great to see Congratulations make it into your Top 100, my favourite of his music this year. I don't think I remember Never Change despite YouTube telling me I've heard it before so giving another listen, that piano riff is pretty nice but I think I still prefer Congratulations!

Also giving Take a Chance a listen now which seems to have passed me by, seems very classic Oliver Heldens which is good to see. Ven Pa Ca, Breaking Me, Deep End and Goliath are other highlights from this section.

Commentary

Purple Disco Machine starts off the section with what is his first ever appearance in the year-end top 100! 'Hypnotized' was a bit different for him being not reliant on a sample but accompanied with a great original vocal from Sophie. It however kept his trademark disco sound albeit making it a little more accessible to the mainstream audience, it ended up being a big hit for him across Europe getting 88m Spotify streams but sadly the UK didn't give it the time of day. Next up is the first of two appearances in the top 100 for Joel Corry. It is of course 'Head & Heart' which became his biggest hit yet and one of the biggest songs of the year in the UK across all genres! It has a fairly standard piano house production tailor made for Love Island but it's very much helped by an irresistibly catchy hook and great vocal from MNEK so it was very pleasing to see it be such a hit. Lady Gaga also has two appearances in the top 100 and the first of these is 'Stupid Love'. The song was the comeback single I had been waiting for from her for oh so many years so it was great to see her go down this direction so well after doing ballads for the last few years. It may not be one of her most remembered songs ever in the future largely thanks to what would follow it up but it's certainly a highlight of her output for me for just being a great care free dancepop track. Hello to Gareth Emery yet again as 'Amber Sun' appears at #57, off of the continuing residual streaming after being his biggest hit yet and making it to last year's #2! I still think it's his absolute best song although 'Saving Light' is strong competition. Last year's commentary for it is down below. Following that we have Lika Morgan, queen of dance remakes! She started off the chart year with one of the 90s euro dance hit 'Be My Lover', with the production doing a great job of modernising it. She'll be making another appearance later on with... another remake!

Commentary

Lane 8 managed to get three sleeper hits this year from the album 'Brightest Lights' he put out at the start of the year. The most recent of these to impact was 'Road' which appears to be the most popular of his on Spotify and is at #55 here. It's got a nice laidback beat accompanied by the lovely vocal of Arctic Lake, a great melodic house track - and with the sub-genre gaining popularity in my chart this year it is only right that one of its leaders has multiple appearances in the list. At #54 we have another BJSC discovery - not only that but the highest of them all in the rundown! It is from Bronson, the project of Odesza & Golden Features, two dance acts I haven't paid much attention to but they came together to give us this great driving dance track, a great cross between melodic and bassy house. Sigala didn't have such a great 2020 with none of his releases for the year making the list. However he does manage to get 'We Got Love' from the tail end of last year to make it in at #53. It is miles better than 'Lasting Lover', so of course it wasn't half as big of a hit. Helped by a great vocal from Ella Henderson who I'd certainly be happy to hear more dance tracks from in the years to come and the upbeat vibe it is going for. Meanwhile at #52 we have a song that is nearing its 10th birthday! It is of course 'Levels' from Avicii which got a big chart boost from the end of decade where it was ranked my #1 song of the past 10 years by quite some distance (and I'd be surprised if any song ever overtook in my lifetime!). For as long as the UK continue to put 'Mr. Brightside' in the year-end chart, I may as well allow this to chart every year too. Avicii still has 5 appearances left in the top 50. Just missing out however is Smr Lve, an unknown trance act who broke through by virtue of the Christina Novelli feature allowing it to pop up on my release radar. It is however the Suprafive remix that did it for me which is more of a progressive house take. With less than 20k streams on Spotify it is one of the most obscure tracks in the entirety of the countdown. It really deserved a bit more attention though, especially for that drop bassline.

Hi Dan, I want to sincerely apologise for my lack of response to the mass of hard work you have out into this countdown so far. It is credit to your love of dance music and keeping meticulous records too. I’m so very impressed and I don’t think I could ever achieve what you have done, so I really want you to take this as a huge sign of respect and awe that I have for what you do here year after year, it’s just so pleasing to see, and I truly am enjoying this. It is just that I hadn’t ventured into this part of the forum of late, and due to not keeping a personal chart for the whole of 2020 I won’t be posting an Enf Of Year chart myself, but I’m very interested in seeing what is still to come from you as one of my most super compatible last.fm users!

Surprised so many big songs have already been named, but within this Top 50 I am expecting to see Paul Woolford, Regard, Jax Jones, CamelPhat, Joel Corry and Nathan Dawe just to name a few.

Commentary

Starting off the top 50 we have Drake with 'Toosie Slide' which is the #1 hip-hop song of the year in the countdown. It wasn't by any stretch the most 'credible' song the genre had to offer but I'd be lying if I pretended to not enjoy it. It's another smooth and catchy track from him. It got a lot of negativity for the TikTok bait of a chorus but it didn't put me off. Next up is the highest appearance for Joe Stone this year and this time taking on 'Superstar' which is perhaps best known for Jamelia's cover version of it in 2003. He makes it into an upbeat piano house tune and managed to get former X Factor finalists Four of Diamonds a hit here in the process. I'm not a fan of their own output however so it has been their sole chart hit so far. It is an honest cover of the song which doesn't do anything more than it needs to with it and well worth a listen if you like a good remake. Dua Lipa has 2 appearances in the top 50 and the first of these is her mega hit 'Don't Start Now'. The track started off her 2nd era in the best possible way giving us an excellent nu-disco pop track. At #47 we have Armin van Buuren again and with the highest of his three collabs with Avira who came into prominence with 'Hollow'. The track is the closest thing to a 'pop' song from their collaborative EP but Armin isn't in sellout mode here, it is a great progressive trance track with a drop that pays off for having to wait the majority of the song for. Love Regenerator doesn't manage to have a top 40 appearance this year but given the change of sound Calvin did this year even #46 is a good showing. It is of course with 'Live Without Your Love', the most 'commercial' track released from the alias project so far (having even spent a few weeks in the UK top 100). It is a track inspired from classic house which is welcome to hear from him alongside a great soulful vocal from Steve Lacy. Some more tracks in this style would be most welcome (and not another 'Over Now' esque disappointment).

Commentary

Now we reach the final section before we go into the top 40 and to start off we have Bunt.. They released a couple of duds in the meantime before coming back strong with 'Unbreakable'. The song has a bit of history to it originally having been written for Avicii who produced his version of it and even played it live, but never gave it a proper release. It was later given to Bunt. to remake and finally got its release this August after months of anticipation by the Avicii fanbase. It certainly has an Avicii feel to it and I think they did the absolute best job they could with it. It's got a big anthemic chorus and uplifting feel similar to the track 'On My Way' which you may well remember from having represented us in BJSC. CamelPhat had a great year in 2020 and although they didn't get a mega smash live 'Breathe' was last year 'Hypercolour' came close to giving them another year-end top 40 hit, being their biggest of the year. The track was a rather unexpected collab with the frontman of indie band Foals but his vocal ended up really suiting the track. It is a great melodic progressive track which they do so well. Eelke Kleijn is next up albeit helped by one of my current big faves Nora En Pure with her remix of 'Lost Souls'. It is a lovely deep house track here as I've come to expect from her who provided the remix to this track I'd otherwise have not have heard of. It proved to be a real grower of a track for me too, taking 19 weeks to make the top 10. At #42 we have uplifting trance producer Craig Connelly with 'Run Away', a track that was an instant standout when I gave his album a listen. It ended up being a BJSC potential then later being sent to Club Bizarre where it performed perhaps not quite as well as it should've. It does take its time to really get going but pays off well with a great long trance breakdown, one of the best of the year in my opinion, it's just how I like my trance. Just missing out on a top 40 spot is 220 Kid who broke through this year with sleeper hit 'Don't Need Love'. The production on it isn't by any means outstanding, and is more than most songs here very reliant on the vocal, fortunately it does have a good one and as a basic bop I enjoy it.

Hey Dan, of that last 10 songs you shared that just missed out on the Top 40, I’m especially surprised about Live Without Your Love which would surely have been a Top 20 if I had my own EOY chart. Also a shame to see 220 KID and also CamelPhat just missing out on the EOY Top 40.

I didn’t realise that you had t charted Nathan Dawe in 2020, maybe this year he will appear if he gets the right vocalist on board.

I suspect Joel Corry’s single Lonely will finish between 40 and 30 when you reveal that soon!

Hypnotized is an absolute tune, didn't do much for me on first listen but it just kept growing and growing, it still sounds really good now. Both that and Hypercolour will be appearing in my Top 100.

Don't Need Love and Head & Heart were two of the best Top 10 songs from last year, the former didn't do much for me initially but began to grow on me just as it dropped out of the chart

Live Without Your Love would be top 20 if I kept it to mainstream releases only, and by extension CamelPhat and 220 Kid too. it's just that a load of my faves are from outside the chart these days.
Nathan sure does have a lot to prove still. No Time For Tears isn't really doing it for me either (peaked at #66 in my chart so far) although it's at least better than his previous hits.
Lonely will be yet to come, you'll have to wait to find out where.

glad to see Hypnotized and Hypercolour looking to make your top 100 so at least we'll have a couple of snaps there.
they certainly were amongst the best of what the mainstream had to offer.

BL is by all means a very good song but just not something I fully Loved. quite amazing that it even made my top 100 seeing as it missed my weekly top 40, anyhow.
yeah it had some very good post contest longevity which most songs don't in my chart.
it definitely grew on me from being a hit but did peak in my top 40 just from the BJSC exposure so I always liked the track.
well I did enjoy his previous hits, and Lonely will be appearing higher up, it's great that he is somewhat consistently good.
I think it's amongst her best singles, shame it will probably get overlooked cos of how big ROM was.
it easily got my +18, definitely one of the best tracks to have come from BJSC in recent times.

sounds odd that your mum would take so much to Plachu Na Teckno, but mostly cos my mum doesn't like anything techno.

Commentary

Meduza get a 2nd year in the top 40, just about! Having finished in the top 10 last year with 'Piece of Your Heart', they followed this up with another similarly themed tune. It got its fair share of criticism for being "POYH with female vox" but I think it was a solid follow-up. It was particularly helped by having none other than Becky Hill as the lead vocalist, one of my favourite singers of the moment. It was a very instant hit for me but wasn't quite as big as their debut in the long run. Nonetheless a worthy addition to the top 40. Hopefully they can make something of this quality again soon but so far it appears they are quickly going down the route of many dance acts of having diminishing returns, with current single 'Paradise' failing to even reach my weekly top 100 despite its big UK success.

Commentary

Eight of my BJSC entries appear in the top 40, which I believe to be a record high (although this does include two from 2019). The first of these comes from Shapov who likewise appeared in the top 10 last year alongside Armin van Buuren. The song actually originated quite a few years ago but was never officially released until it was given a new edit for 2020. It does feel like a big reminder of the festival progressive house boom of the early 2010s, a style that has gone out of trend for quite a few years now but Shapov manages to make it sound fresh again.

Commentary

For all the hits Alan Walker has had, this is actually only his third appearance in a year-end top 40, following his two debut hits. Although it's not quite my 3rd-favourite track he's ever done, it's another solid tune and easily the best he put out within the tracking year (the December release 'Space Melody' could very well find itself this high in the 2021 countdown however). It's another collaboration with his good friend K-391 who have now had 5 hits together, alongside the more unknown producer Ahrix as well as an anonymous female vocalist. It's standard fare for them but reasonably upbeat and works well for what it is.

Commentary

The ever-divisive 'Dance Monkey' finds itself top 50 in the countdown for a 2nd year, and this time getting a well deserved top 40 placement. It was very pleasing to see this become the absolute mega-hit that it was, given I often don't properly love the proper massive hits nowadays. It's undeniably a great song though, I even enjoy her vocal inflections on it giving it her own personality. Her vocal on this track proved to be polarising but I love it, it reminded me of Sia in the best way. It's a song about her days spent busking which cleverly fits the title and hook, and what a catchy hook this is. There's a real distinct lack of unique pop records these days so this was amazing to hear even if it took a short while to actually be a proper hit in my chart.

Commentary

Jon Sine is primarily a YouTube blogger who does near-daily uploads about his life as a dance producer. I follow a fair few channels about the making of dance music, being interested in the process (and I hope to get back into doing my own attempts at making dance music this year). None of these have ever translated into a proper hit in my chart however until the release of 'Secrets' - easily the best thing Jon Sine has put out as a producer with other releases not being quite as interesting. It's a song that very much could've been a hit single if there were a bigger name behind it, being very commercial-oriented dance - this one a bit more deep house influenced than his other work. As you may've guessed, it's not even the highest song on the rundown with this song title!

Lose Control is my least favourite of the three charting MEDUZA songs unfortunately - there's nothing inherently 'bad' about it, I think it was jsut too similar to their first hit for me but not as standout. Shame you're not a fan of Paradise as I enjoyed that one very much!

Giving End of Time a listen now, it sounds okay and certainly seems like it could grow on me although evidently not for you since it peaked in its second week here!

I think Paradise is rather similar too but just not as lively for me, and I'm not super fond of Dermot's vocals.
Glad you like End of Time, I'd recommend Alan Walker's new one Space Melody too if you've not heard it yet.

Commentary

Now here's two people I weren't expecting to make my EOY top 40 ever (again). It's Afrojack's biggest hit since 'Give Me Everything' way back in 2011. The guest feature you may recognise from being a former member of Fifth Harmony, who has now found herself being a regular dance vocalist ever since her solo career never really took off. It's not so much the sound that Afrojack had been doing for the best part of the last decade which I wasn't so much into (see chart history below for just how quickly the hits dried up after 2013), nor has he gone back to his early style. It's just a fun lite radio friendly dance bop with a serviceable vocal.

Commentary

BT is of course a respected veteran of trance, but I hadn't been actively seeking out new material from him, having not been a big fan of what I'd heard aside from the 90s classic 'Flaming June'. Well that changed when I saw he'd done a track with Emma Hewitt - one of the very best trance vocalists. With a runtime of 9 minutes I knew it had potential, and on first listen I was instantly wowed. Definitely one of the most ambitious dance tracks I've heard this year and all the better for it. It has such a great soundscape all throughout, but the full version is truly essential for that stunning intro section, with all its vocal and string textures. It builds throughout into multiple drops saving the meatiest section toward the end. Of course, I'd end up sending the track into BJSC where it finished in the top 20.

Khalid and Disclosure ~ Know Your Worth

Commentary

For a second time Khalid & Disclosure got together and proved once again they work well as a team. I'm not at all a Khalid fan otherwise, but it's his 3rd appearance in a year-end top 40 as a dance vocalist. Whilst 'Know Your Worth' didn't quite do it for me as much as 'Talk', it does at least feel a bit more like a Disclosure song with their trademark slow house groove. Khalid does well here with his smooth vocal. So it was much pleasing to see this still manage to be somewhat of a big hit officially, coming close to making the year-end list. It would be nice to have Disclosure do a couple more commercial oriented songs like this, as they've clearly still got it in them and I preferred this to all of their most recent album (though I am glad they didn't go full sell out like certain other dance acts).

Commentary

TheFatRat gave us what we all needed in 2020 with another Laura Brehm collab and one that was actually great again (making for a confusing run of their collabs peaks of 4-2-1-85-1). 'We'll Meet Again' is thankfully not an ill-advised cover of the Vera Lynn song but another great mid-tempo dance track that TheFatRat does so well. It has a great uplifting vibe especially with the brass melody in the post-chorus. Laura gives another amazing vocal here and we'll be seeing her one more time later on in the countdown. In this time of Covid a great hopeful song such as this was refreshing to hear.

Commentary

With renewed interest in the song following its single release and it being given a spotlight in the Tribute Concert, it quickly rebounded to become yet another #1 for Avicii in the new year. However I was not so fussed on the re-recorded version with MishCatt, and still much prefer the original album cut. It's very much a beautiful if sad track that I'd recommend if it passed you by.
