It's odd isn't it, especially with That's The Way Love Goes doing comparatively well. Although at the time I can't remember radio playing it, it just sort of seemed to drift in and out with no fanfare at all and I don't think I'd heard it before it was played on the chart show.

I love 'If' but (unpopular opinion time) I find backing track to be a racket laugh.gif I personally wouldn't choose to play it if I was having a nice quiet chill.

Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire

2. That's The Way Love Goes | 9.7 Highest Scores: 11: (Davidson, vibe, blacksquare), 10: (Nina West, Sour Candy, dandy, Simon, Cremey, Liam.k), Lowest Scores: 8: (Liam, Jessie Where)

At the runner up spot with a whopping 9.7 is That's The Way Love Goes, released in April 1993 as the lead single from Janet Jackson's 5th studio album Janet, and was written and produced by Janet and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the song samples James Brown's 1974 song "Papa Don't Take No Mess" and The Honey Drippers' 1973 song "Impeach the President". The song's themes of romantic lust saw Jackson transitioning to sensual territory, considered a shocking contrast to her previous releases among critics and the public. The first version of the track had a lovelorn tone which Janet revised, contacting producer Jimmy Jam to say she was taking an alternate direction. She was initially indifferent upon hearing its instrumental, but after she embarked on a brief vacation, she loved it and decided to record it and use this concept throughout the whole album project. When Virgin executives heard the rough cut of "If", they wanted that to be the lead single, however, after some insistence from Jam and Lewis, 'That's The Way Love Goes' was finally chosen. Upon release it became one of Janet's biggest hits in the United States. It was one of the longest-reigning hits of 1993, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks, to date it's the longest running chart topper of any of the Jackson family. Internationally it also became a huge commercial success by topping the charts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, & Hungary, it hit #2 in the UK (her highest charting hit there), top 5 peaks in Finland & Netherlands, as well as top 10 peaks in Denmark, Germany, Ireland & Sweden. The song received the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in addition to Billboard Awards, BMI Pop Award for Most Played Song, and American Music Awards. It has been cited as one of her signature songs, recognized for its vocals, innovation, and "timeless" aura.

One of Janet's greatest all-time hits and a more than worthy runner-up to the #1 ranking song here. A beautiful soulful slow-burn groove number that marked a perfect introduction to her 5th album and to showcase her new more mature and confident sound. The smooth slinky sounds grooves lightly over the seductive and funky beats as Janet's lusty and sensual vocals purrs over the gorgeous production and perfectly sets a romantic tone. This is a prime example of an artist taking a huge risk and reaping all the rewards as this turned Janet into an almighty worldwide force to be reckoned with. Laidback and enchanting this is Janet at her absolute prime of her artistic career by delivering a smouldering R&B sex jam for the ages. One of Janet Jackson's all-time greats that rightly ranks as one of her many signature tracks.

There are times when I look above and beyond

1. Together Again | 10.0

Highest Scores: 11: (Nina West, Jessie Where, Simon), 10: (Liam, Sour Candy, dandy, Davidson, vibe, Pandamic Tension, Cremey, blacksquare, Liam.k, Math)
Lowest Scores: 8: (popchartfreak)

There you have it Buzzjack your favourite Janet Jackson single with a perfect average of 10 is Together Again, released in December 1997 as the 2nd single from Janet's 6th studio album The Velvet Rope, and was written and produced by Janet and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, with additional writing by Jackson's then-husband René Elizondo Jr. Originally written as a ballad, the track was rearranged as an uptempo dance song. Janet was inspired to write the song by her own private discovery of losing a friend to AIDS, as well as by a piece of fan mail she received from a young boy in England who had lost his father. Janet told MTV News that her inspiration to write the song was "Runaway" by Nuyorican Soul, as the song reminded her of being in Studio 54 in New York when she was a child. Upon release it was well received by music critics and became a massive commercial success by becoming her 8th chart topper on the US Billboard charts and would go onto to earn a Platinum certification. Worldwide it would top the charts in Netherlands, Poland, & Hungary, as well as top 5 peaks in many countries including Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland, & in the UK where it became her biggest selling single with over 800,000 copies sold there. Two music videos were produced for the song. The original version was directed by French photographer Seb Janiak and choreographed by Tina Landon .This version received a nomination for Best Dance Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. Another music video was released for the "Deeper Remix". Directed by René Elizondo Jr.

We have now come at the end of our Janet Jackson singles rate journey over the last few months and would like to thank everybody whose taken part. What a fitting end to this countdown than with this flawless celebratory dance-pop masterpiece that finds inspiration from the cornerstone of queer culture. Instead of writing a sad elegant ballad, Janet instead looks to dance and disco culture to pay homage to her late friends and honours them by crafting a swirling vibrant upbeat dance song that acts as a joyous reminder of her friends’ lives, a celebration of their memory. Janet delivers a wonderfully nuanced performance that takes command of the track's uptempo and catchy beats and delivers what is perhaps her most beautiful and poignant songs in her iconic discography. Uplifting, addictive, and legendary, this is perhaps Janet's greatest achievement and a prime example of what an incredible artist she truly is.

Amazing winner, although I kind or prefer "Love" to "Together Again" these days. Both are sublime.

Thank you for organizing this wub.gif

Thanks for running this, it's been fun to revisit her back catalogue.

The winner was never really in doubt but I am surprised to see That's the Way Love Goes as high as #2. I wouldn't have thought it suited Buzzjack's typical tastes as well as some of her other songs so it's a pleasant surprise. Plus If being top 3 and Rhythm Nation being her top 80s song were other highlights.
