Welcome to the long awaited follow up to the same things as I did for the 1990s, where we discover those songs that hung around the lower top 10 long enough to outsell bigger hits or were just released at a time of huge sellers and had to make do with peaks that would normally be meted out to lesser singles.

It's gonna be an unpredictable ride and even moreso because End of Year top 100 charts for some of the early years are much debated and disputed. Even the official top 50s that the Official Charts Company published in 2022 have their doubters. Anyone getting picky will be asked to leave the thread. laugh.gif

The top 2 may be easily recalled by the more observant among you but everything else will be fresh news. One female voice will appear three times - more than any other. Who will that be?

Until we meet again.

Yes I can imagine what the top 2 will be but I have no real idea what to expect aside from that, I'm going to resist looking! I guess maybe whatever was #6 in December 1984 could well feature highly but no idea what that is.

The issue there is that the four number 6s for that month may have already been higher up and thus excluded from this thread.

70 - Scritti Politti - The Word Girl

70th best seller of 1985
Chart Run
46-40-29-15-10-8-6-10-15-24-41-63

I'm not familiar with this song at all. Strangely, it was the biggest hit from parent album Cupid & Psyche 85 despite being the 4th single. They always seem to be highly regarded by critics but I could never really work out why.

This didn't outsell any of 1985's 20 number 1s. No non-top 5 single did, that year.

I love The Word Girl, I'm only familiar with it because when I worked in M&S a long time ago they played it a lot on the in-store radio.

It has a really soulful vibe to me.

69 - Wee Papa Girl Rappers - Wee Rule

70th best seller of 1988
Chart Run
34-17-8-6-7-9-19-27-50

Third single from their debut album The Beat, the Rhyme, the Noise, this was their only top 10 hit. They never troubled the top 40 after Wee Rule and even their homeland of the UK couldn't be bothered with anything from their second album, including the album itself Be Aware released in 1990.

They did have a hit from that album in the Netherlands and Sweden - Get in the Groove.

This didn't outsell any number 1s from 1988.

Great start with Scritti Politti, although I prefer their earlier hit Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin) - interestingly, The Word Girl references Aretha's song Chain Of Fools.

68 - Elaine Paige Memory

70th best seller of 1981
Chart Run
66-34-15-9-6-7-10-19-28-38-53-75

I must say, I assumed that this would have been a bigger hit than the number 6 peak it achieved. It peaked just before the soundtrack to Cats was released so buyers may have opted for the album instead.

The vocal is obviously stunning and Elaine went on to have a number 1 single with Barbara Dickson, I Know Him So Well.

It didn't outsell any of 1981s number 1s

67 - Jermaine Stewart - Say It Again

69th best seller of 1988
Chart Run
52-37-25-17-10-8-7-11-24-39-54-72

From Jermaine's third album Say it Again, this had a decent chart run and also peaked at the end of Feb 1988, the top 5 of which included a lot of big selling singles, I Should Be So Lucky, Beat Dis, I Think We're Alone Now, Tell it to My Heart and Get Out of My Dreams (Get into my Car).

The follow up Get Lucky is particularly good and really reminds me of Will Young. After Get Lucky, Jermaine only had some minor hits in the UK, Germany and the US.

Say It Again didn't outsell any 1988 number 1s

66 - Damian - The Time Warp

69th best seller of 1989
Chart Run
42-35-21-12-7-7-8-13-25-32-38-47-65

First released in 1986, The Time Warp managed 2 isolated weeks inside the top 100. When released in 1987 and then re-issued in 1988, it made the top 75 both times. It wasn't until Stock, Aitken and Waterman engineer and mixer Pete Hammond remixed the track did the track have the impetus to chart inside the top 40.

Damian followed this up with Wig Wam Bam which failed to reach the top 40. He tried to resurrect his musical career in 2007 with a cover of Video Killed the Radio Start which failed to chart anywhere.

This did not outsell any of 1989's number 1s.

65 - Mai Tai - History

69th best seller of 1985
Chart Run
47-32-16-10-9-8-9-9-17-29-45-53-71

I have neither heard of this song nor this band, before now. Very much a disco-lite song with obvious Sister Sledge influences, this Dutch band were constructed by three former backing singers and had plenty of success in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The follow up Body and Soul also hung around the number 10 spot for a while, too - 64-43-41-36-18-11-10-9-10-15-27-44-64 but missed the cut-off for this chart.

64 - Madness - Shut Up

69th best seller of 1981
Chart Run
22-10-7-12-15-19-27-48-72

Coming midway through their unbroken run of 19 top 15 singles. Not having a very remarkable chart-run, it was, however, unfortunately in the top 10 while some of the best selling singles of the year were above it - Stand and Deliver, The Birdie Song, Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart).

One of a demanding list of chart hits instructing people to shut up and, variously, kiss me, forget about it, drive, let me go, dance and give me whatever you've got.

63 - Level 42 - Running In The Family

69th best seller of 1987
Chart Run
18-10-7-6-10-12-21-36-42-67

From their most successful singles period 1986/1987, this was the title track from their seventh album of the same name, which, remarkably for a 9 track album, held 5 top 40 singles.

They continued to have plenty of hits up to the mid-90s but never matched the number 6 peck of this track.

Mai Tai's History is a forgotten gem, great dancepopsoul, deserves to be better remembered. Shut Up is a decent single that tends to get forgotten amongst Madness classics.

62 - The Pointer Sisters - Slow Hand

68th best seller of 1981
Chart Run
61-37-29-16-11-10-11-14-22-33-51

The Sisters had been having hits in the USA since 1973 - but this was the firs time to reach the UK top 40. Although in only reached number 10 it was behind some very heavy hitters - Tainter Love, Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart) and the Birdie Song.

It would be a few years later before their iconic Jump (For My Love) and I'm So Excited became hits.

61 - Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk featuring Darryl Pandy - Love Can't Turn Around

68th best seller of 1986
Chart Run
36-20-16-11-11-10-13-21-30-35-53-62

A groundbreaking track being the first Chicago house anthem to be a hit in the UK, originally written by Isaac Hayes but with the title changed from I Can't Turn Around.
Steve "Silk" Hurley had already taken the song to number 1 club charts in the USA, but Farley saw bigger potential and re-recorded it with Darryl Pandy.

Pandy lent the song a flamboyant focus point and a noteworthy Top of the Pops performance ensued.

Don’t think I’ve heard The Birdie Song described as a heavy hitter before tongue.gif

Ahhhh the Time Warp. I used to like that as a child, although I had no idea it was originally from Rocky Horror back then. As a child I also used to think that Damien had gone solo from Culture Club as at the time I wasn't used to seeing men dress up like that and just assumed he was the same person as Boy George eeeek :/ manson.gif

Absolutely love Love Can’t Turn Around such a groundbreaking sound and TOTP performance and little did we know at the time what was to follow. Also admit I have a soft spot for Level 42 😍
