Frankie Dettori claimed a big-race double on what is set to be his final day of rides at York.

The 52-year-old overcame a wide draw to claim victory on the Willie Mullins-trained Absurde (7-1) in his last ride in the prestigious Ebor Handicap.

He had earlier won the City of York Stakes on the 9-4 favourite Kinross for trainer Ralph Beckett.

Dettori is due to retire at the end of the year, bringing to an end a career which stretches back to 1987.

Magellan Strait toughed it out in testing conditions to spring a massive surprise in the Irish Cesarewitch at the Curragh.

The four-year-old was sent off at 150-1 in the €600,000 handicap and stayed on bravely to deny Falcon Eight for Joseph O'Brien.

Epatante, winner of the 2020 Champion Hurdle, has been retired and is in foal to Walk In The Park, trainer Nicky Henderson revealed on Sunday. The JP McManus-owned nine-year-old was last seen finishing fourth behind Echoes In Rain in the Grade 1 Mares' Champion Hurdle at Punchestown in April.

"She was a brilliant hurdler who gave us a great day when she won the Champion Hurdle, one of the many super days we had with her," said Henderson.

During her 24-race career, Epatante only finished outside the first three four times. She recorded 12 victories and collected £997,915 in prize-money. Her biggest success came when beating Sharjah by three lengths in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival under Barry Geraghty.

Tommy Kinane, one of Irish racing's most revered diminutive giants and great patriarchs, has died at the age of 90.

Father of legendary 13-time champion jockey Mick, Kinane himself enjoyed a wonderful career in the saddle as a jump jockey.

His most famous triumph came when he guided the Des McDonogh-trained Monksfield to the first of his two Champion Hurdle victories at Cheltenham in 1978 when they beat Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse into second and third.

Night Nurse had won the previous two Champion Hurdles and Sea Pigeon would win the two following Monksfield's triumphs. It remains one of the most exalted periods in the two-mile hurdling division and Kinane's association with Monksfield is fondly remembered, not least because it ended a 15-year drought in the race for Irish-trained horses.

Frankie Dettori believes he will have some "absolute weapons" at Ascot on Qipco British Champions Day for his final day riding in Britain before his planned retirement.

Dettori said he was "completely focused" on ensuring he was in the best possible position for the meeting on October 21, with his potential mounts including King Of Steel in the Qipco Champion Stakes, Inspiral in the Qipco Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Kinross in the Qipco British Champions Sprint and Courage Mon Ami in the Qipco Long Distance Cup.

He said: "I know I’m retiring, but I don’t want to take the gloss off Champions Day because it’s about coronating the best horses in every category and, lucky me, I’ve got some absolute weapons that day on top of my retirement.

David Pipe is putting serious thought into identifying the right jockey to partner Cesarewitch joint-topweight Wordsworth at Newmarket on Saturday, with his team of scouts searching for the ideal claimer for the job.

Pipe's father Martin landed the prestigious handicap, backed this year by Godolphin, with Heros Fatal in 2000 and Miss Fara two years later. Miss Fara had the assistance of Ryan Moore, claiming 5lb at the time, and a rider of that ilk would certainly fit the bill for Wordsworth.

"We'll be looking to claim off him and we've got a few people working on it," said the Grand National-winning trainer, who saddled 28-1 winner Oceanline on the Flat at Ascot on Friday. "It's very difficult off top weight but the Cesarewitch is the reason he was bought really."

A Royal Ascot and Group 1 runner-up when trained by Aidan O'Brien, Wordsworth made a winning debut for Pipe and owner Caroline Tisdall over hurdles at Bangor recently and is rated a general 20-1 chance for the Cesarewitch

Dubai World Cup runner-up Algiers was beaten on his reappearance in the Grade 3 Durham Cup at Woodbine on Saturday as Artie's Storm ran down the short-priced favourite in the closing strides.

Algiers, who was initially pencilled in for the Grade 2 Woodward Stakes at Aqueduct the previous Saturday but rerouted after rain turned conditions testing and delayed the contest by a day, raced prominently under Robert Havlin but took time to find a clear passage in the stretch.

Last year's Derby winner Desert Crown has been put down after failing to recover from a serious leg injury.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt, owned by Saeed Suhail, was injured in the build-up to an intended run at the Juddmonte International at York.

He suffered a fetlock fracture on the Newmarket gallops in August.

"Desert Crown was a great horse and was destined to be one of the best if he hadn't had this injury" said Bruce Raymond, racing manager to Suhail.

"He was one of the easiest winners of the Derby that I can remember and it's a great shame that we've lost him

Oisin Murphy will be a surprise attraction on Thursday's Wincanton card after he was booked to ride over hurdles for the first time.

The three-time champion Flat jockey will partner the Cian Collins-trained Lets Do This in the 3m½f novice handicap hurdle (2.05), with the likes of Ryan Moore and William Buick traded for Jonjo O'Neill Jr and Tom Bellamy as the riders in opposition.

The Paddy Power Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham next month has emerged as the next likely slot for Coral Gold Cup winner Datsalrightgino but trainer Jamie Snowden said there is a possibility he could be supplemented for the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase at Kempton on December 26.

The Randox Grand National was suggested as a possible target in the aftermath of the Coral Gold Cup, but Datsalrightgino's rise in the official ratings this week is likely to prompt connections to look beyond handicaps.

Gavin Sheehan is free to ride two of Jamie Snowden's stable aces at Sandown on Saturday after a successful appeal against a 14-day non-trier ban he was hit with at Huntingdon last month for his ride on the Lucy Wadham-trained Zain Nights in a maiden hurdle.

Sheehan, successful on Snowden inmate Datsalrightgino in Saturday's Coral Gold Cup at Newbury, was initially judged to have failed to ask his mount for a "timely, real and substantial effort to obtain the best possible placing" by stewards on duty at Huntingdon.

They also banned the gelding, beaten 16 lengths into third by Tellherthename, who was later described by his winning jockey Kielan Woods as the best horse he has ever ridden, from running for 40 days.

Huntingdon's Peterborough Chase card on Sunday came through its inspection on Thursday afternoon but officials at the Cambridgeshire course will check conditions again on Friday morning.

The ground is soft and the track is raceable ahead of the Peterborough Chase, worth £75,000 in prize-money and the feature Grade 2 on a seven-race card, but with the river levels remaining high and heavy rain forecast for Thursday afternoon and evening, a second inspection has been called for 7.30am on Friday.

Only 1.6mm of rain had fallen as of 1.37pm on Thursday, but the track could be hit by a further 9-10mm before Friday morning.

Huntingdon's predicament could influence the decision of Alan King regarding Edwardstone, who is entered in the Peterborough and has been declared in the Tingle Creek at Sandown on Saturday.

Lucy Turner became the first female jockey to win the Becher Chase as Chambard triumphed at Aintree.

The 18-1 shot pulled away with two of the 21 fences remaining, with Coko Beach second and Percussion third.

"He's been incredible," Turner told ITV4. "I wasn't sure if it would be too much of a stamina test for him, with the fences and the ground, but he's been brilliant."

The race is a trial for the Grand National at Aintree on 13 April.

Trainer Venetia Williams said of Turner: "She knows that horse so well. It's just so amazing. I'm so thrilled."
