Its been all over the media in the UK but the presenter in question has been named just now.

He allegedly paid a teenager for sexual photos.

the end of his career I guess?

Most importantly, the police have confirmed that no crime was committed

So the Sun ruined a mans life for what?

The MET have said they’ve found no evidence of illegal activity, supporting what the person who actually sent the photos has said.

It was always a matter of a time until the identity of the person got revealed but for it to happen from his own wife ohmy.gif

Yeah I guess that's gonna be him sitting on the sofa watching the news rather than presenting it now going forwards.

Is that photo of him in a state of undress going around real??

We knew it was him, but who named him?

Also, the person has denied the Sun's claims, right?

Right I just read up that he paid for a twenty year old man's photos from OnlyFans. Completely different dituation to Schofield in my opinion.

Another really ugly news cycle that proved to completely overblow everything, especially as it seems to have irreparably damaged his life. Granted, this was a pretty stupid and creepy thing for someone of his status and I do feel slightly for his wife, but it's nowhere near the Schofield levels of sick this was made out to be. I imagine there's a lot worse that goes on on that website.

The man still flirted with 17 year olds on Instagram. That’s what grooming is.

I don’t care if nothing technically “illegal” happened, this man is a n*nce in my opinion. No 60 year olds should be flirting with teenagers!

I'm finding the reporting really homophobic.

I'm reserving judgement on what I think about the case otherwise but to be honest I'm alarmed by the implication in a lot of the reporting that using dating apps and exchanging pictures at all is in some way suspicious or evidence of being a twisted or dangerous or morally bad person.

For a long time and to an extent still, online (or its predecessor, phone and newspaper based ads) is the single safest way for LGBTQ people to find others to date because approaching someone in public who doesn't swing your way might result in you being violently assaulted or worse.

So essentially reporting on it in this way is casting suspicion on ALL LGBTQ people.

Me too Joops. I dread to think what they would find if they had details of most people’s porn history - for a lot of people it would be things they would never do in real life.

There is nothing different in this to many straight people. The only difference is those people weren’t subjected to a time where it was very difficult to be yourself and often found themselves trying straight marriages to hide what they believed to be shameful.

Can we please tone down the insensitive and offensive language being used? Particularly as we don't know many details and there has been no evidence of any criminality by anyone in this tragic story.

I just feel sad. I feel sorry for everyone involved in this story. I believe that The Sun deliberately weaponised a story and encouraged a pile-on, which had it done due diligence would have shown it to be of limited public interest, to deliberately attack the BBC and destroy someone's life. I don't excuse how Huw Edwards behaved, and he has a lot to work through no doubt. It is completely inexcusable and incredibly stupid - but I don't see a predatory and manipulative man. I see a sad, lonely and closeted man who has struggled with significant mental health issues for many years and has now been hounded by the British press to a very dark place.

I hope that he gets the care that he needs, and I hope that all parties reflect on what has been going on over the past few days.

This is not to minimise the impacts that the young people involved have suffered, that is equally upsetting of course.

That's a pretty vile post. He's not a nonce. If you use that term for what has allegedly been "committed" then it discolours the true nonces out there. If there was a crime, the police would be involved, but strangely enough they've been very quiet on the matter.

All of this has originated from the most scummy newspaper going. The whole story reeks of extortion and blackmail from the family. The Sun have accussed someone of a crime that hasn't been commited and now we as people have judged him guilty. It's disgusting. There's absolutely no confirmation anything has actually happened.

Let's not forget the wider political angle the Tories and Murdoch have here either against the BBC.

To be fair if they could stick to people their own age (or at least just not boys barely out of, or in some cases still in, school), they would be fine and there’d be no backlash or need to suspend them. Just a thought.

A 60 year old sliding into a 17 year old’s DMs is about as n*ncy as it gets IMO. Ephebophilia is just as bad as pedophilia.

This is the same police force that let Jimmy Savile get away with it for so long so forgive me for not having a great deal of confidence in their judgement.

The allegations are also from the same newspaper who said Liverpool fans killed 97 of their own. They don't deal in facts, they publish lies and don't ever deal with the consequences of their actions.

There's no truth that that newspaper publishes when it targets individuals.

I’ve seen the messages of him sending love heart emojis to a boy who was still in school… that’s enough for me!

I do agree with you that there is a massive power imbalance there, which is why I said what he did was incredibly stupid, though technically it wasn't wrong or criminal, though obviously morally is a different story.

I just feel incredibly sad that he suffers so much shame that he never felt comfortable coming out. I remember John Nicolson coming out in the early 2000s when he was a newsreader on BBC 1 and at the time the BBC weren't very supportive, so that and the fact that apparently he's from a strongly Catholic family probably means he's struggled with it for a long time.

Yep, you've seen those messages with zero context (unsurprisingly they are printed and cut to suit their agenda) from the moral highground of The Sun newspaper who once had a countdown until Charlotte Church turned 16. Also shows that the alleged 17 year old instigated messages on numerous occassions.

The Sun is as much fact as Harry Potter.

The Met Police and the BBC aren’t exactly corruption free either. They’ve hardly had enough time to conduct a full investigation have they?

We’ll never know the full story, I don’t know why people are so quick to take the Met Police’s word as gospel all of a sudden?
