Chart Highlights
  • After eight weeks in the runner up position, "Shake It Off" returns to #1, marking it's third week at the top. The last song to wait that long was "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus, which returned to the top after nine weeks at #2-3, when a parody video went viral.
  • This is Taylor's longest run at #1, equalling the three (non-consecutive) weeks "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" spent on top in 2012.
  • While "Shake It Off" fell out of the Hot Digital Songs Top 50 because of iTunes complete my album, Billboard used "aggregate" sales to contribute to the song's overall points total, resulting in a 1% increase in Hot 100 chart points for "Shake It Off", even though its streaming and airplay fell.
  • This week's total digital track sales were 17.29 million - up +1% on last week but down -15% compared with same week last year. YTD stands at 935.37 million - down -13% on same point last year.

This is what I don't get:

"BILLBOARD: Shake" falls off Digital Songs, which it topped for four weeks, from No. 15. Its slide is owed to iTunes customers who bought "Shake" and completed their purchases of 1989. Essentially, consumers who completed the album were returning "Shake," translating to its sales chart slip. For the purposes of the Hot 100, however, aggregate sales contribute to the song's overall point total."

Technically, it shouldn't have any points from digital sales and Meghan should still be #1.

Isn't this what caused 'A Sky Full Of Stars' to go top 10? Whatever it is it seems erroneous.

Erroneous or not, going back to #1 after eight weeks at #2 ohmy.gif I thought it was impressive when 'Thrift Shop' did that after only 5 weeks.

Yay for Ed reaching a new peak again as well, avoiding doing a 'Rather Be'.

Yes, happened with Coldplay.

Although this is less likely to happen in the future with iTunes not reporting instant grats.

Billboard has found a way to assign points to negative sales.

Her chart points have been made up laugh.gif

Even more impressive was Wrecking Ball last year which went back to #1 after a NINE week gap, but iirc a viral video helped push it back up...

Yeah, Wrecking Ball's return to #1 was a fluke really. A bit more legit than Taylor's though.

Completely forgot about that! (It wasn't 9 weeks at #2 in that case though, was #3 for most of the gap weeks).

#75 debut for 'Ghost'! biggrin.gif

I have a feeling Meghan is going back to #1 next week.

Taylor will have lower streaming numbers than usual due to being removed from Spotify, and now that aggregate sales are no longer a factor, I think Meghan's sales will be higher.

Agreed. I also have a feeling it'll be quite a while before any challenger comes along sad.gif Unless there's a surprise Rihanna release or something.

We finally have prove that Billboard makes up the chart points for some songs.

They said "Shake It Off" fell off the Digital Songs chart so they had to use aggregate sales to contribute to Taylors's Hot 100 points total, but it actually sold 11,629, so they shouldn't have done that. They really wanted Taylor back at #1 this week so she could top both the BB200 and Hot 100.

Meghan should have been #1 again this week.

The thing is, the sales that would have been affected by Complete My Album would STILL count for the Hot 100, just not Hot Digital Songs.

Clearly that's what's happening, but it shouldn't.

Taylor's points should have come from those 11k or so sales.

I think they changed it so that songs wouldn't have giant drops during album release weeks, but the boost these songs are getting is huge.

Coldplay shot into the Top 10, and Taylor got the boost she need to get back to #1.
