2024 is here, and Zanmatony have started the year strongly with a Top 20 hit thanks to the wonderful entry by INESSA. It becomes the second occasion Zanmatony have finished in 16th position after their very first appearance in a BJSC final back in BJSC 91.

What a ride that was in Sovarasma for BJSC 162! The hosts made us feel so very welcome and delivered a truly suberb contest, and shortly after, we ran a survey across all regions of Zanmatony, and the results suggest this is the best presented song contest Zanmatony have taken part in ever before!
Twelth place is where Zanmatony finished in the final this time around, which is very respectable for our ravey entry this month, and this became our second qualifier of the year so far. BJSC 163 Entry (March 2024)
Artist: High Pulp feat. MonoNeon Song: Never In My Short Sweet Life Origin: 🇺🇸 USA High Pulp are a Los Angeles-based experimental jazz collective whose sound hints at times to everything from Miles Davis and Duke Ellington to Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. Their songs balance meticulous composition with visceral spontaneity, and the performances are nothing short of virtuosic, fueled by raw, ecstatic horn runs ducking and weaving their way around thick bass lines and dizzying percussion. An inexplicable force pulled the collective together to produce the high-octane jazz, funk, hip-hop, punk, psychedelic cocktail that soon became their signature sound. MonoNeon is a bassist from Memphis, TN and has been playing bass since began teaching himself to play at the age of four! He is a colorfully dressed experimental bassist that posts prolific jams to YouTube and has played in sessions with Prince, Domi and JD Beck, and Mac Miller. Never In My Sweet Short Life is described by drummer Bobby Granfelt as having "so many iterations, so many sections, and so much disagreement internally. We kept tweaking and mining the song until we stripped it down to what we believed was its core - a whimsical flying lotus-meets-the beatles psychedelic odyssey. There used to be an outro with a beautiful horn arrangement, but we opted at the 11th hour to scrap it entirely and opt for a modular synthesizer-lead ambient outro featuring a baritone guitar." Greetings from Zanmatony. We come to you at the conclusion of the 164th BuzzJack Song Contest which we did not qualify in with our chosen entry. It did however mark a new record for our nation in that it is the highest number of votes for an entry in a semi final without qualifying, with a total of thirteen voters sending some of their points our way.

Artist: Weekend Players Song: Into The Sun Origin: 🇬🇧 United Kingdom Jazz-pop chanteuse Rachel Foster was working with the vocal group Shod Collective in her native Nottingham, England, in the late '90s when she befriended producer Andy Cato. Cato, one-half of Groove Armada, was impressed by Foster's warm presentation, so they immediately connected for a musical jaunt of their own. Weekend Players is who they became known as for a sultry mix of leftfield jazz and underground dance. Their debut album Pursuit of Happiness has scored high with the television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and its spin-off CSI: Miami, having several of the album's songs in varying episodes. Into The Sun was released in early 2002 and achieved a UK chart peak of #42 at the time. It didn't quite have the same impact as the previous single did in the year before, but it was certainly a feel-good song for stepping out into the solar breeze. Post-contest analysis from Zanmatony is positive overall. We returned to qualifying ways again, and enjoyed out first extended stay in the land of Bøtanikkä. Artist: Dreamwake Song: Memories Origin: 🇺🇸 USA Dreamwake is a 4 piece Wavecore band from New Haven, Connecticut. Blending aggressive riffs and emotionally driven Melodies along with a healthy dose of synthwave and saxophone, Dreamwake has created a sound all their own, bridging the gap between Melody and Metal. Their music is characterized by its intensity and emotional depth, appealing to fans of both metalcore and progressive metal genres. BJSC 166 is over. Participation was rewarded with another qualification as we explored another genre that has often been hit or miss with our past efforts to qualify. Despite the comfortable qualificiation, the final performance was much more to be desired and we settled for our second all-time finishing position of 38th.

Artist: Neuromonakh Feofan Song: Под драм легко Origin: 🇷🇺 Russia Neuromonakh Feofan is a musical project from St. Petersburg, Russia, combining drum and bass and Russian folk music. Their performances are styled after traditional Russian festivals. The group members perform in bast shoes, kosovorotkas and sarafans. One member performs dressed as a bear. The group's lyrics incorporate Church Slavonic and obsolete Russian words, and they play balalaika over the drum and bass beats. In a 2018 interview, Neuromonakh Feofan revealed that his real name is Oleg Stepanov. In our first BJSC spin-off event in 2024, we took part in the inagural contest of Collaborations, which saw Zanmatony paired with Lotunia to create a duo of entries that shared a likeness. The theme we selected involved the use of unique instruments, native dialects and other cultural aspects. The end result saw Zanmatony achieve a very respectable Top 5 finish, whereas our partners Lotunia faired a little worse off finishing in 15th.

Artist: Vitesse X Song: Eternal Origin: 🇺🇸 USA Vitesse X is an electronic music artist and producer known for blending genres such as house, techno, and ambient music. Vitesse X gained attention for their ethereal and dreamlike soundscapes, which are often characterized by lush synthesizers, intricate rhythms, and hypnotic melodies. The artist's work often blurs the lines between dance music and more introspective, ambient compositions. After years playing in bands and DJing around her native New York, she launched her solo career to get in touch with herself and with the euphoric spirit of the dancefloor. At the conclusion of the results show for BJSC 167, our hosts from Neliönoir confirmed Zanmatony's finishing position by means of a video, and here is that video;

This is the very first time we have done this and it supersedes our previous best result of 4th achieved in BJSC 147 with VENUS. It certainly did not feel like an entry that would go on to break this record but we had high hopes of it being our best finish of 2024 at least, and it certainly proved to do that.
