'Chained...' was meant to be a huge smash for Katy, keeping up her streak of massive lead singles with a trendy political theme but has failed to make it to platinum in the UK despite having it's sales inflated by streaming, and in the US she went from being the #1 pop girl to being outperformed by other lead singles such as Praying and Sorry Not Sorry by artists who wouldn't have even been considered on the same level as Katy earlier on. It had some good performances across Europe but compared to her other leads quite poor.

The verses are good but the chorus is really not to my taste.
The chorus is too much different to the verses, should have kept the moody atmosphere of the verses throughout the song and had a more subdued chorus. |

Her "woke" imagery and lyrics probably caused it. It put some people off.

Basically all this.
It's not her best and the chorus jars with the rest of the sing - very subdued. It is also Sia-by-numbers and doesn't have the usual Katy energy and isn't a huge bop. The whole album was terrible, with bad lyrics, vocals and production, and so they released the best they had. Also, her 'woke pop' was her ARTPOP pretentious moment. People weren't here for it. |

I do think a big part of it was her leaving it so long, so much can change in the space of 3 years in pop.
I wouldn't say it did that badly though, would have peaked at #3 without Ed Sheeran's releasing 2 singles. Obviously what killed the campaign stone dead and beyond all hope is 'Bon Appétit'. |

I jammed it HARD when it came out and I think I even said it was my favourite Katy track once oops but now it's her second worst single for me ahead of 'Teenage Dream' Sorry, you got taken in by fan hype, like I always warn afoot:p Also TD is one of her best ever. And I've said it once before, but I agree that doing a Nelly Furtado and baking pies for three years meant she was out the loop. |

Basically Katy waited too long for the wrong moment to release and so Chained To The Rhythm flopped more than it should have.
That said, the best thing about CTTR for me was the hamster lyric video that she released with it. Bon Appetit was godawful, every bit about it was just terrible. Swish Swish is a big improvement and should’ve been the second single, but it’s still nothing too special and a big let down compared to most of Katy’s previous singles. Without Nicki Minaj I wouldn’t have given Swish Swish a second listen. Hey Hey Hey is apparently the next single... I’d ask why but honestly most of the album is crap so good on her for trying with one of the slightly better album tracks. |

I just don't think anyone is really calling for Katy to be serious and while I love the song, it doesn't have that massive karaoke-ready pop chorus that Katy is so famed for. It's always hard for me to distance myself from being a 'stan' so I loved the song immediately but I don't think, if I try and be impartial, it is as much of an immediate bop as Roar/California Gurls/I Kissed A Girl which all hit you round the head with hooks.
The three years probably didn't help, neither did Rise which killed off a REAL comeback feel, a 'woke' image people didn't believe, apparently her hair aswell. I'm glad you used 'underperform' though because it did do well and it certainly was a million miles from an embarrassment for her but would she have been expected to do better? Yeah, she would. |

It only really underperformed in the US. Even in Canada it’s one of her highest selling singles. Same goes for France, Germany and Australia. In the Uk it outsold the lead singles from Kesha, Pink, Taylor, Miley, Demi in 2017.

It felt huge to me!
I think Katy is as big as ever. She just needs another hit. |

I think people have exaggerated the underperformance of this, mostly because it didn't get to number one and because the campaign completely derailed as soon as Bon Appetit dropped. It was a hit. It's a great song. Could it have been bigger? Sure, I do think Rise took a lot of the hype but you also had Ed Sheeran clogging up the charts and potentially divisive lyrics.
Also look at the charts right now, they are completely unpredictable. Streaming is difficult and the majority of the big female popstars just aren't having hit after hit anymore. There are more factors to look at these days anyway. |

It hardly under performed or flopped. It reached top 5 in UK and sold over 400k so that’s not a flop. I think a lot of people were expecting it to sell larger volumes like the first singles did from her other albums but it’s still done fine and much better than in comparison to anything else from this era.
