How it works ?

It's a mix between the official UK chart and my music preferences. For each week I will select my favourite song from UK top 10. So I can't declare favourite UK # 41 flop as alternative # 1 and my all-time favourite with UK chartrun : 2-3-8-15-24-35 can't spend more than 3 weeks on the top.

My music taste is the mostly opposite to the majority of Buzzjack community. So possibly you will prefer the official history of UK # 1s over my choices, but let's have fun.

Also I will rate top 10 hits with the exсeption of instrumentals. I'm very strict judge, so 6/10 is a good score.

# 1 songs :
20.12.1969 : Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell - All I Have To Do Is Dream (4 weeks)
17.01.1970 : Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (2 weeks)

I would like you to start with the 70s as that decade doesn't get much coverage on the forum.

70s sounds a good one, as we have threads covering the 60s, 80s and 90s running at the moment.

I like 70s as the first choice for this thread. It's the best decade in music, but if we talk about UK charts - not all my favourites were successful.

This sounds rather interesting to follow.

I would start with the 70s as I don't think there is a huge amount of interest in music prior to that on this forum (I may be wrong).

20th December 1969 : Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell - All I Have To Do Is Dream (4 weeks at # 1)

Rating : 8 / 10

UK chartrun : 27-17-7-7-5-3-5-4-5-11-15-22-32-27*

* - I don't count frozen charts

Let's start with a classic song on the top. It's a cover version of Every Brothers # 1 hit from 1958 year, which I prefer over the original. Bobbie Gentry already had # 1 single with "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" some months before, Glen Campbell got his first chart-topper.

Fresh songs in UK top 10 :
Dave Clark Five - Good Old Rock 'N' Roll - 6/10
Harry J All Stars - Liquidator - not rated, because it's instrumental.

17th January 1970 : Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (2 weeks at # 1)

Rating : 7 / 10

UK chartrun : 39-10-8-6-4-7-2-6-6-12-17-30

"Suspicious Minds" became the first # 1 single in 70s for King of Rock and Roll. The original was recorded by American songwriter Mark James in 1968 year, but failed commercially. Based on big number of top 10 hits possibly Elvis is all-time # 1 act not only in real UK charts, but in my imaginary version too.

Fresh songs in UK top 10 :
Badfinger - Come And Get It - 5/10
Marmalade - Reflections Of My Life - 4/10

I've not heard that version of 'All I Have To Do Is Dream' before. I could barely hear Bobbie. It might have worked better if she had been given some lines to sing on her own.

31st January 1970 : Edison Lighthouse - Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) (1 week at # 1)

Rating : 7 / 10

UK chartrun : 12-1-1-1-1-1-4-5-17-19-27-28

Edison Lighthouse confirmed # 1 status, but his single was less popular here in comparison with the real chart.

Fresh songs in UK top 10 :
Arrival - Friends - 6/10
Peter, Paul and Mary - Leavin' On A Jet Plane - 5/10
Jethro Tull - The Witch's Promise - 4/10

'Love Grows' (Where My Rosemary Goes) is a great oldie. Tiktok trying to make that a hit again last year too iirc.

'Suspicious Minds' I do get sick of hearing at times but it's one of his better tracks.

7th February 1970 : Mary Hopkin - Temma Harbour (5 weeks at # 1)

Rating : 9 / 10

UK chartrun : 22-10-8-6-7-10-19-24-34-38

Welsh beauty Mary Hopkin got her 3rd consecutive number one single. It was very easy win for my second favourite singer from 70s decade.

Fresh songs in UK top 10 :
Herman's Hermits - Years May Come, Years May Go - 7/10
Lee Marvin - Wand'rin Star - 6/10
Brotherhood Of Man - United We Stand - 6/10
White Plains - My Baby Loves Lovin' - 5/10
Jackson 5 - I Want You Back - 5/10
John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Plastic Ono Band - Instant Karma - 5/10
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water - 4/10
Canned Heat - Let's Work Together - 4/10
Chicago - I'm A Man - 2/10
Shocking Blue - Venus - 1/10

14th March 1970 : Beatles - Let It Be (2 weeks at # 1)

Rating : 8 / 10

UK chartrun : 2-3-4-7-11-16-26-34-34

Honestly "That Same Old Feeling" is my favourite single for these two weeks, but the Beatles deserved to have # 1 with the last and one from best their singles, which became all-time classic. How they sold less copies and were blocked by "Wand'rin Star" ?

Fresh songs in UK top 10 :
Pickettywitch - That Same Old Feeling - 8/10
Sacha Distel - Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head - 6/10
Andy Williams - Can't Help Falling In Love - 6/10
Elvis Presley - Don't Cry Daddy - 6/10
Steam - Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - 2/10

'Let It Be' is a good one from The Beatles, quite deep on the whole song meaning for it though which makes it stand out as a classic still to this day!

Bridge Over Troubled Water, Let's Work Together and Let It Be are the best songs there of the ones I know.

28th March 1970 : Mary Hopkin - Knock Knock Who's There ? (2 weeks at # 1)

Rating : 9 / 10

UK chartrun : 7-2-4-4-5-14-15-22-29-31-40-38

Mary Hopkin represented United Kingdom (my favourite ESC country) with "Knock Knock", so it's a double combo and obvious # 1 here. In my retrospective chart she will have some additional # 1 singles (for the last time with "If You Love Me" in 1976 year), but based on UK top 10 restrictions it's her fourth consecutive, but last chart topper in this re-written history of UK chart.

Fresh songs in UK top 10 :
Kenny Rogers and The First Edition - Something's Burning - 4/10
Dave Clark Five - Everybody Get Together - 3/10
Bob and Marcia - Young, Gifted And Black - 1/10

11th April 1970 : Dana - All Kinds Of Everything (7 weeks at # 1)

Rating : 10 / 10

UK chartrun : 13-2-1-1-2-3-5-10-21-27-29-36-33-38

Only two 10/10 songs from 70s decade were popular enough for # 1 in this UK chart retrospective, so catch the moment. "All Kinds Of Everything" is my favourite Eurovision winner and the second favourite song from a history of this contest (only behind Anmary "Beautiful Song"). Also it's my SOTY of 1970 year.

Dana's win became a wonderful start for my favourite Eurovision decade.

She sings about all the things which remind her of her sweetheart (such as wishing-wells, wedding bells and an early morning dew) with the admission at the end of every verse that "all kinds of everything remind me of you". It was a great time, when the cute song about the first love won on Eurovision and spent 2 weeks on the top of main music chart in the world. In Ireland "All Kinds Of Everything" was a record holder with 9 weeks at # 1 until 1978 year, when "Mull Of Kintyre" spent 10 weeks on the top.

Possibly it's my favourite moment in UK chart history, when "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was dethroned by Dana's hit single.

Fresh songs in UK top 10 :
England World Cup Squad - Back Home - 7/10
Christie - Yellow River - 6/10
Roger Whittaker - I Don't Believe In If Anymore - 6/10
Cufflinks - When Julie Comes Around - 5/10
Tom Jones - Daughter Of Darkness - 5/10
Stevie Wonder - Never Had A Dream Come True - 5/10
Hollies - I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top - 4/10
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Travellin' Band - 4/10
Frijid Pink - House Of The Rising Sun - 4/10
Jimmy Ruffin - Farewell Is A Lonely Sound - 4/10
Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky - 3/10
Moody Blues - Question - 3/10
Move - Brontosaurus - 3/10
Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself - 3/10
Pipkins - Gimme Dat Ding - 2/10
Blue Mink - Good Morning Freedom - 2/10

The songs from the two Birmingham groups, The Moody Blues and The Move, would be my picks from that bunch.

"Back Home" began the tradition of England football squad recording songs to celebrate its involvement in World Cup. This single got the equal result with official UK chart and spent 3 weeks on the top.
