We have another double premiere and down to a new cast of 14 queens rather than last year's 16. What twists will this year bring? Or lack thereof!

Reminder that the all queens' ranking for 2023 is still open for votes as well within the pinned posts.

Season 16's cast is comprised of:

Amanda Tori Meating
Dawn
Geneva Karr
Hershii LiqCour-Jeté
Megami
Mhi'ya Iman Le'Paige
Mirage
Morphine Love Dion
Nymphia Wind
Plane Jane
Plasma
Q
Sapphira Cristál
Xunami Muse

For some reason this year the girls either seem to have very long or very short names!

Charlize Theron and Becky G guest judge this season's premieres, set to drop on Friday Jan 5th

Sapphira is EVERYTHING. Her walking in gave me Sasha Colby or Symone vibes like that is a superstar straight away.

Immunity back is interesting as it sounds like they can use it anytime instead of just the week after like old school Drag Race, I’m assuming just these two premiere winners get it and can use it when they want.

Sapphira is great and all but she's giving me 'I've seen it before' realness. Let's wait for a comedy challenge here.

Cannot wait for the 2nd batch of queens, all of my initial favs are there :')

Week 2 split premiere queens always get the scraps when it comes to the guest judges lmao. Imagine getting Becky G when the rest had CHARLIZE f***ING THERON. scream

I wish they just had a double premiere, it’s annoying having to wait another week to meet everyone. I like split premieres but I can’t why we can’t have a double one so that everyone gets their episode but we don’t have to wait a week.

Becky G is sending me like I do scream when the queens have to pretend they know who the guest judge is 😭

Oop well it turned out it was just E1!

Broadly I think it was good! But nobody but Sapphira is giving me top 4 energy. Amanda TM I think has potential for a Daya Betty run though (stumbles early but then goes a long way)

Xunami and Morphine on the other hand, I wouldn't bank on going far after that ep. Although miss M's talent show was surprisingly strong.

That was such a strong start (majority of the talent show being lip-syncs aside). There weren't any queens I wasn't keen on, so overall a really strong bunch. Preparing myself for next week's lot to either be just as amazing and this end up being one of the strongest casts in a l o n g time, or the much weaker bunch.

Dawn, Q, Sapphira and Mirage stood out the most to me - can see all three going very far! Amanda and Xunami were entertaining, and I'm undecided on Morphine. A very strong character, but I can see her maybe verging on being just plain mean some point down the line?

We may as well reuse this thread for the second premiere:

Episode 2 drops tomorrow and introduces 7 new queens for (almost definitely) a second photo mini challenge, talent show, and rate-a-queen top 2 game!

Watched the preview and I’m not mad at “real Drag Race” being back with Jane being cutting, but I am already rolling my eyes at how it’s much more acceptable for a hot white guy to say someone fat is a piglet than it is for queens of colour to be a bit shady, because the latter ends in death threats :’) Good old Drag Race fans…

Even in the same season, look at the reaction to Morphine compared to Jane this week. It will be interesting to see how Jane’s reaction is with the wider fanbase/casuals.

I had the exact same thought. That was really cringe. She's going to get away with that (I SCREAMED when she said that in Russian) because she's a hot guy. She'll still get criticised but not to the same extent as a BIPOC queen would for sure.

As a representative for all Russian people, I'm not claiming her so far x Also if you say you speak Russian, you better work on that accent which was a struggle bus lol but she's probably never been to Russia :') I need to hear Jane speak more but so far Katya's accent is not that much different.

I *love* me a villain in Drag Race. I cannot stand Plane Jane, she gives me every bitchy gay that I like to avoid in life, who is playing the role of a villain, as opposed to actually being herself.

Plane Jane isn't even entertaining to me, her talent show was a poor man's Jimbo and just not that great. Calling people ugly and being fatphobic really isn't cute but I can see her having fans sadly.

I agree, to me it is just so calculated, you can see the wheels turning as she wrings out every ounce of the bitchy gay stereotype in *every* confessional. Her drag is the right amount of camp and stupid while still being polished so I want to like her, but so far I’m just getting vibes that she is desperate to be the villain for whatever reason. Had it been just the entrance, ok cool, shady, but the fact that every time she was on screen was dragging someone else down got old real quick. Maybe I’m cynical but even the breastplate focused talent show I think she knew Ru would love that so even that felt calculated and too thought out laugh.gif

I can only agree, she came across as very boring and tryhard.

However I did appreciate that she was strategic and made money out of it. Geneva's lipsync was very embarrassing, makes me think she won't be long for the competition. How do you lose a Becky G song to a basic white girl?

Plasma is giving obvious first out, she was doing way too much. And so is Mihya Iman LePage. She was really giving go girl give us nothing outside of her talent performance, no ability to volley whatsoever with Ru.

Entertaining in parts, but my god there was such a clear divide in strength between the first group of queens and this group.

Plasma could be really great if it didn't seem like she was quite so desperate. She seems like the type of queen that's spent hours upon hours watching each season back to find the little nooks and crannies that make a great queen, while not quite executing it the best herself. Otherwise, I want to like her, but the only ones that really stood out this episode for me were Hershii and Jane.
