QUOTE(awardinary @ Apr 8 2024, 08:24 PM) *
So this is where it all began for The Killers, their debut single, and all these years on Mr. Brightside continues to maintain a ridiculous chart run spanning 20 years!

Not quite their debut single actually, the original release of 'Somebody Told Me' was their debut single and it peaked #28 (helped by the copy of the single that I personally bought!)

I'm glad 'Mr Brightside' didn't finish any higher than that, I loved it back in the day but I don't particularly enjoy it much these days due to the overexposure, and I still for the life of me can't fathom what it is about the song that keeps it constantly in the top 100. It's bonkers.

'All These Things That I've Done' fully deserves its place in the top 5, the "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" refrain is iconic and will never get old *.*

'Somebody Told Me' FTW!

I agree that 5th is pretty fair for Mr Brightside really. The 4 that have beat it are all masterpieces - it’s not like it’s been beaten by anything meh. Even at the time before it became a phenomenon it was only my 2nd favourite on Hot Fuss behind Somebody Told Me - now it’s my 3rd favourite and All These Things… has overtaken them both.

All These Things That I’ve Done is just sooo epic - the way it sets the scene before launching into gear and and the gospel-like chorus at the end.

The Top 3 are all brilliant. Think I gave them 9.5, 10 and 11.

I think you'll find that Mr Brightside was released, got nowhere, then Somebody Told Me was a minor hit , and then both singles were re-released.

Mr Brightside was their debut single in Sept 2003.

As for the debate around marking it down for reasons unknown or known.

I didn't mark it down. It's just not their best song (Somebody Told Me is)

Oh wow, I learnt something today. I had always thought 'Somebody Told Me' was their debut release, but on further research, you're quite right, 'Mr Brightside' had a limited release even before that!

To be fair Somebody Told Me was the first one most people heard (myself included) so a reasonable line of thinking

Was kinda hoping to see WYWY at #2 but I''ll settle for top 3. What an anthemic masterpiece, probably my second favourite Killers song behind STM wub.gif

I know it was kept off #1 by the Scissor Sisters but anyone know how close the sales were on both weeks it was at #2 behind them?

I like WYWY but I wouldn't consider it top 3, I think 'Read My Mind' was a stronger single from that album for instance.

2. Human
Release Date: September 22, 2008

====================
Total Points: 154.0
Average Score: 9.6
Highest Rater(s): Roba. (11.0)
Lowest Rater(s): dandy*, Severin (8.0)

It was released as the first single from their third studio album Day & Age. Brandon Flowers described "Human" as "Johnny Cash meets the Pet Shop Boys". Flowers stated that the song was created with Stuart Price during their work with him on the Sawdust album, and has changed very little since then. He confessed to not putting it on Sawdust as "it was too good". The cover art for the single is a portrait of the band's guitarist Dave Keuning, and is one of the four portraits drawn by Paul Normansell for the album. The music video was directed by Danny Drysdale. It features the band performing the song in Goblin Valley State Park, Utah. It peaked at #3 in the UK Singles Chart.

When You Were Young was my 11: it’s funny as at the time I wasn’t that fussed about it, but over time I’ve come to realise it’s all about the instruments which are incredibly stirring.

With Human it’s really those cryptic lyrics that make it as well as the bubbling synths.

And so it’s yet another rate win for the glorious Somebody Told Me, which was definitely the single that inspired me to buy Hot Fuss and declare myself a fan!

Thanks very much for running this Wardy.

Somebody Told Me winning baffles me a bit. I mean I like it but to have it as the Killers’ best song seems a bit far to me. Out of interest for people who gave it high scores what makes it so amazing in your guys’ opinion?

For me, it's has the best lyrics and is the best constructed and most vibrant of all their releases. I found that as a band they quickly became rather generic in both their sound and writing and lost that early sparkle fast.

STM is a great song but I still would’ve preferred #2 or #3 to pull through laugh.gif

Someone with more time and patience on their hands should do a comparison between this rates results and the last one, and then set a timer for another in 5/6 years time laugh.gif

Great job hosting this Wardy!
