Over the next few weeks I'll be making a playlist for each year of this fine decade with the biggest and best dance tracks of the year across all genres. It'll mostly be UK hits but with a few personal faves from outside the charts thrown in too.The playlists are not in strict preference order but faves/big hits will generally go towards the top.
Let's start with 2010. The year Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, DJ Fresh, Inna, Afrojack, Example, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Katy B, Magnetic Man all broke through and David Guetta was as big as ever. The year we had big one hit wonders from Yolanda Be Cool, Edward Maya and Sidney Samson. The year where deadmau5 had the best dance album and Pendulum had their last still to this day (minus their remixes collection). Relive the year in dance music below: What are your faves from the year? Did I miss anything out? At the time 'We No Speak Americano' was my Tune of the Year. It still holds up but 'Seek Bromance' and 'One' are proper EDM classics. |

Yes, of course it was the beginning of the dubstep revolution. Insane just how big it was for a comparatively very short time.
I've included also a few dubstep bangers that didn't make top 40 like Love Never Dies (Back For The First Time), I Can't Stop, Woo Boost and of course Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites. I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting too. |

“Coma Cat” is a bit of a lost classic - for me it only charted at #30 which I bitterly regret now.

01 [NEW] Caspa - Back for the First Time 02 [NEW] Taio Cruz - Dynamite 03 [NEW] Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup - We No Speak Americano 04 [NEW] Eminem feat. Rihanna - Love the Way You Lie 05 [NEW] Tensnake - Coma Cat I'd call it my 2nd fave of that top five now, behind 'Americano'. |

Strangely I wasn't a fan of the more synth heavy harder forms of dance until I heard the excellent drop of SHM's 'Miami 2 Ibiza'. 'We No Speak Americano' by Yolanda Be Cool and D Cup and fellow swing house hit 'Why Don't You' by Gramophonedzie were good fun I agree, I was surprised when I found out that Yolanda Be Cool and D Cup weren't Italian but were from Australia. That kind of swing house is popular in Italy though, I remember hearing a CD/playlist of the genre being played when I was on holiday in Rome. 'Katy On A Mission' was also a bit of a different sounding hit to anything else around at the time - I rather liked it at the time. 'Take That' by Wiley and Chew Fu is also very unique - a hybrid between electro house and 90s 2Unlimited style high energy dance. Unfortunately I don't remember 'Take That' from the time. Progressive house was becoming the dominant genre and 'I'm In Love (I Wanna Do It)' is a good example of the 'deeper' more reflective form of the genre - sounds so nostalgic now...but it was a bit poppy for me at the time. What wasn't though was fellow progressive house hit, 'Seek Bromance' by Tim Berg - this was one of my faves of the year. Deep and chilled house would only become big by 2013, but a real precursor to it was 'Stereo Love' - I didn't fully appreciate it at the time but it is a great holiday song. The 'Never Be Your Woman' Shy-Fx remix would precede drum and bass becoming more popular. 2010 was a good year for dance music in the UK chart, although I think overall 2011 is better. ' |

It's about time we moved on to 2011. This was the year club banger EDM would reach its peak with the all time classics 'Levels', 'We Found Love' and 'Titanium' as well as the peak of rap/EDM crossovers with big tunes from LMFAO and Pitbull. Outside of that dubstep was also at its peak with Nero being very prominent and Chase & Status getting their biggest hit.

Another essay-like post, sorry
 :Wasn't sure you would class 'Give Me Everything' as dance as Pitbull and Ne-Yo are the two first credited artists rather than Afrojack, but the song is certainly more dancey than 'Club Can't Handle Me' which was around in the top 10 at that time too. The dubstep era was great, should have lasted a bit longer I think though. One of my first introductions to the genre was Modestep's 'Feel Good' when it charted, the drop of which sounded so different to anything I had heard before, and then soon after Nero's 'Guilt' was great too. Unfortunately there were quite a few good dubstep songs around that didn't quite make top 40. For drum and bass, Chase and Status' and Delilah's 'Time' I liked, and sounds even better today. 'C'mon (Catch Em By Surprise)' by Tiesto, Diplo and Busta Rhymes I really liked at the time, sounded less commercial to me than most of the chart EDM around at the time. One of the last Tiesto songs too to have any trance influence (although the start of the verses of 'The Right Song' in 2016 also had a bit). 'Mr Saxobeat', 'Sun Is Up' and 'Dirty Talk' are all quite cheesy, but good tunes, I was particularly a fan of 'Dirty Talk' which already sounds quite nostalgic. For LMFAO I wasn't a massive fan of 'Sexy and I Know It', the slightly more sensible 'Champagne Showers' though I did like. I didn't mind the David Guetta domination too much, although I liked some of his hits during this time more than others, 'Turn Me On' is quite cheesy but was a bit of a guilty pleasure, 'Sweat' I really liked and still sounds good now (I preferred it to fellow big-synth dance hit 'Beautiful People' by Benny Benassi and Chris Brown which was around at the same time although that was a good tune too). 'Without You' was quite nice and 'Titanium' I really liked when it first charted in the top 40 briefly when the album was released so I got bored of it quite soon after it it was later fully released as a single and made #1. As for Calvin, I wasn't a fan of 'Bounce', 'We Found Love' I thought was quite good back then though, even though Calvin has imo surpassed it in 2014-5 with 'Outside' and 'Pray To God' and back in 2009 with 'I'm Not Alone' and 'Ready For The Weekend' And as for Avicii I liked 'Levels' back then, it was also weird having two songs with the same sample in the top 40 with Flo Rida's Good Feeling charting before it. Finally, on your playlist danG, I see 'Gabriel' by Joe Goddard and Valentina. I was an avid late night radio 1 listener back then and was a fan of this tune. On the plus side, DJ Fresh & NERO provided us with seemingly impossible #1s for their genres. |

Let's move on to 2012. A huge year for dance music...
Swedish House Mafia peaked and broke up with their last single 'Don't You Worry Child' being a huge #1 hit. Calvin Harris was still on top scoring two #1s with Florence as well as producing a #1 for Cheryl. Disclosure broke through with massive hit 'Latch', which also introduced the world to Sam Smith. DJ Fresh got his second #1 with 'Hot Right Now', introducing the world to Rita Ora. Porter Robinson received his mainstream breakthrough with 'Language', as well as Madeon with 'Icarus' and Otto Knows with 'Million Voices', all notable for being (mostly) instrumental, alongside Swedish House Mafia's instrumental hit 'Greyhound'. Skrillex got his first major hit with 'Bangarang' bringing the sub-genre of moombathon mainstream. Avicii and David Guetta continued to be big names in the chart. RedLight -Get Out My Head I have to say was one of my faves from that year.
The Porter Robinson and Otto Knows ones were great. The last year dubstep was that popular, the real last dubstep song to make the charts for dubstep was 2013's Sub Focus/Alex Clare - Endorphins. |
