Biography

Solána Rowe had a weird time growing up. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the cops into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hard-headed, very curious.” It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts and what people think about my thoughts.” - Apple Music

Biography

From his early days playing Chicago house in French discotheques to his long reign atop the pop charts, David Guetta has revolutionized dance music multiple times. Born in Paris in 1967, Guetta began DJing in the late ’80s, when the shimmery sound known as the “French touch” was taking shape. By the early 2000s, at his F*** Me I’m Famous parties in Ibiza, he had translated that melodic style into a clever merger of pop sass and club swagger. He parlayed that mix into pure platinum with hits like 2003’s “Just for One Day,” an energy-stoking rework of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” and 2002’s “Just a Little More Love,” a sultry bump-and-grind featuring R&B singer Chris Willis. That versatility—along with a knack for killer hooks—would become one of Guetta’s principal calling cards, and as EDM exploded across pop culture at the end of the 2000s, Guetta’s shapeshifting style led the way, yielding ecstatic affirmations (“When Love Takes Over”), feisty come-ons (“Sexy Bitch”), and unstoppable singalongs (The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” which Guetta produced). Since then, his collaborations (Sia, Nicki Minaj) have kept listeners guessing even as his choruses—triumphant as a bottle of bubbly blowing its top—have proven one of pop’s most dependable pleasures. - Apple Music

Biography

Future
There’s a good anecdote that Future recounted in an interview—about getting into an argument with a guy who was worried about one of the Atlanta rapper’s engineers. The engineer hadn’t left the studio in a week. Had he even eaten? Don’t worry, Future said—he himself hadn’t left in a week, either, and someone was bringing in Wendy’s from up the block. Barely a season goes by without new music from the rapper born Nayvadius Wilburn (in 1983)—whether it’s a mixtape, solo album or collaborative project (with Drake, with Gucci Mane, with the producer Zaytoven). But prolific isn’t the half of it. Druggy, raw, slick and surreal, Future’s sound—crystallised on highlights like 2014’s Honest, 2015’s DS2 and 2017’s HNDRXX—has helped redefine 2010s street rap as something strange and almost avant-garde: trap as modern psychedelia. Not that it isn’t melodic too. Like fellow Atlantan and collaborator Young Thug, Future has a way of bending his voice (often using Auto-Tune) into soulful, often sad shapes, half-rapped and half-sung—the sound of a crooner stuck in space. “The biggest thing is just being yourself all the time,” he told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in early 2017. “When you try and be yourself all the time, everyone’s not gonna like it. But you gotta wake up with that person. At the end of the day, you can be able to look at the person and be like, You know what, I know I’m being myself; I’m not being anyone else. And that’s the greatest thing about this: It’s me being myself.” - Apple Music

Metro Boomin
When the boy who would become Metro Boomin (Leland Tyler Wayne, born 1993) decided he was going to get serious about the rap thing, he intercepted his mother after work with a thick green folder—part dossier, part wish list, part five-year plan. Mom was impressed. He’d already been making beats for a few years, pestering A&Rs on Twitter, crowbarring some connections. He’d even gotten paid a few times. By the time he graduated from high school, he and Mom were making eight-hour-long car trips from St. Louis to Atlanta so Metro could work with Gucci Mane and OJ da Juiceman—contingent, of course, on him keeping his spot on the honour roll. A few months into his freshman year at Morehouse, it became clear that the balance was too tough to keep up. Mom chewed him out. But the work—glossy, atmospheric monsters that pushed trap to cinematic extremes—had too much traction to ignore. The green folder bore out. Future (“Mask Off”, “Low Life”), Migos (“Bad and Boujee”), Post Malone (“Congratulations”), 21 Savage (“Bank Account”), Kodak Black (“Tunnel Vision”): Just a sampling of what followed is some of the most definitive rap of the 2010s, tracks that—alongside the work of collaborators and fellow Atlantans Sonny Digital, Southside, TM88 and Zaytoven—reshaped hip-hop’s sound, feel and culture. That Metro tackled longer-form projects—full-length collaborations, executive productions—not only made him unusually well-known for a producer, but suggested a broader vision, a transcending of the day-to-day business of beatmaking in favour of building a movement. After a handful of years sharing top billing and a baker’s dozen of platinum records in the bag, he released his own album, 2018’s NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES, a couple of months past his 25th birthday. - Apple Music

Undoubtedly but David Guetta has chosen to release utter shit for the last 5 years or so ('Remember' and 'Heartbreak Anthem' notable exceptions).

Biography

Looking back at her breakthrough successes in the early 2000s, pop singer Natasha Bedingfield knows exactly why her music connected on such a massive scale. As she tells Apple Music, “It had this innocent positivity that comes from real-life situations and sometimes a lot of pain—but going through that and being uplifted.” Born in 1981, the West Sussex native comes by that inspirational power honestly: Among her pre-fame pursuits was writing and singing for the London branch of the Hillsong contemporary-worship empire. But with its shimmering fusion of Alanis’ edgy alt-pop and Lauryn Hill’s empowering R&B, Bedingfield’s 2004 solo debut, Unwritten, refashioned her as secular crossover star, albeit one whose catwalk-ready swagger was undercut by a self-effacing relatability. On her first UK No. 1 hit, “These Words,” she demystifies her own songwriting process in a manner that suggests you should try it too, while the album's dew-sparkled titled track is a rapturous ode to tapping your inner creativity (a message that got somewhat clouded when it became the theme song to MTV’s posh-kid hate-watch The Hills). Bedingfield continued to radiate positivity throughout the decade, via upbeat funky bops like “I Wanna Have Your Babies” and 2008’s self-explanatory “Pocketful of Sunshine.” After taking an extended hiatus—marked by one-off collaborations, TV gigs, and new motherhood—Bedingfield resurfaced with 2019’s Linda Perry-produced Roll With Me, which saw the singer coloring her motivational stories with an expanded musical palette of Caribbean rhythms and old-school ‘60s soul. “When you write a hit song, you can easily get caught in a trap where you’re trying to write songs that everyone will like,” Bedingfield tells Apple Music. “But we’re all in our own lane and we all have to evolve and grow.” - Apple Music
