Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Wayne Rooney wants to quit Manchester United.

The Old Trafford boss admitted he was "shocked" and "disappointed" to hear the news but said he had not fallen out with the England international, 24.

"We are as bemused as anyone can be, we can't quite understand why he would want to leave," said Ferguson.

Ferguson said the "door is still open" for Rooney, who will miss Wednesday's European game with Bursaspor after being stretchered off in training.

The frontman suffered minor ankle damage at the end of the session and will sit out the Champions League tie at Old Trafford.

Rooney's future has been the subject of intense speculation over the last few days following reports that he was not prepared to sign a new contract.

His current deal is due to finish at the end of the 2011/12 season.

In an interview with MUTV filmed before he spoke to the media, Ferguson said club chief executive David Gill had told him about Rooney's decision not to sign a new deal back in the summer.

"I was in the office on 14 August and David phoned me to say he (Rooney) wasn't signing a contract," said Ferguson.

"I was dumbfounded. Only months before he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world.

"I asked to have a meeting with the boy. He reiterated what his agent said, that he wanted to go."

Rooney's decision has clearly had a big impact on Ferguson, who signed the player from Everton in.

I feel that we still have to keep the door open for him, especially as he's such a good player

"We've done nothing but help him since he's been at this club," said Ferguson, who has not given up hope of Rooney remaining at Old Trafford.

"I feel that we still have to keep the door open for him, especially as he's such a good player," said the manager.

Rooney has been a key figure for United, helping them to win the Premier League in 2007, 2008 and 2009 as well as the coveted Champions League in 2008

You must wonder why if he said he didn't want to sign a new contract in August, why all this has come to light now...unless Rooney's throwing his toys out of the pram.

It is quite clear this is yet again entirley the work of Ferguson who is making it his business to drive out yet another of our best players because of a pathetic little spat with them.

Well I can't work out whether it is a cover-up or whether it is true.

Fergie is clearly losing it though.

First thing I thought is maybe he's fed up with the way the media has invaded his private life and villified him since a poor performance in the summer. Move to Real would be a clean break

Most reports seem to be suggesting he won't be going abroad. After all, can you imagine him learning a foreign language?

Tevez has managed alright. Over four years now and it appears he can speak as much English as I can Spanish.

I don't think it's Fergie's fault at all. From the look of his body language and the tone of his voice in his press conference earlier I think he's genuinely gutted. I've never seen him like that before.

I hope he goes to Chelsea or Man City.

I watched the interviews last night. Fergie looked close to tears. This story that they've come up is obviously an elaborate cover-up put in place by the board to cover everyones backs. The thing is, you have to wonder whether he has been tapped up. Honestly would not surprise me if Man City have tapped him up by telling him how much he'll earn if he went there. I would have thought a move abroad would be in order, but I couldn't see it happening really. He would only to Real Madrid I would have thought, don't think Barca want him.

What is the betting this "ankle injury" will mean he won't ever play again for Man Utd? LOL. Some of the Man Utd fans are utterly clueless though...not a hope in hell they'll get Torres, or getting 30m + Benzema LOL from Real Madrid. The guys got 18 months on his contract and can buy it out in June. The Glazers will most likely want ALL cash as well. So that would mean they will take 50% at least out of the sale, then Everton have a 25% sell-on clause from when they sold him to Man Utd...

Yep, we're pretty much in a huge mess over this whole thing now....

I'd like to think Rooney wont be moronic enough to move to City, especially since they've got enough strikers for their first team ANYWAY, but it wouldnt surprise me if he did. I woould actually hate him more than that little c**t Tevez too.

I've rethunk my first post in this topic, I actually dont think Fergie is behind this now ohmy.gif

Loved how Rooney's gone from being the "white pele" to "$h!t, fat and useless" LOL at some Man Utd fans. It's a massive blow to them.

As much as I loathe Fergie, I don't think it is his fault. Although much like Clough at Notts Forest, I do honestly think Fergie will be the downfall of Man Utd eventually. There is just so little loyalty in football these days. And Rooney definitely wouldn't be moronic to move to city. Think of the bumper pay packet and the HUGE sign-on fee he will recieve...for a few years and all that money I am sure he will be able to take hurdles of abuse like he gets off the scousers already. Of course this will be masterminded by his agent.

LOL he's a scouser, who left the team he supported as a boy, to come to Manchester. I don't think he particularly cares all that much about 'team loyalty'. I wouldn't really say it would be a moronic decision for him to go to City either, apart from Tevez (as team captain) I couldn't see any of their other strikers getting in the team ahead of Rooney. Adebayor will be gone in January too..

LOL. Why is Fergie crying over him. This is actually is a blessing in disguise. Ronney is a hasbeen. His rep has gone down since the World Cup. He's just useless. I hear Barcelona want to sign him.

If confirmed well... They are taking a bad gamble.

As much as I dislike him, he is not useless. He thrived last year at Man Utd. I do think he is overrated (not as good as the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Torres, Xavi & Iniesta in my eyes...) but he is England's best player but is out of form at the moment. Probably suffering from wanting to get out of the club. Out of Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney leaving - Rooney clearly is hurting the most for all the Man Utd fans. Tevez was bit-part really, Ronaldo had a love/hate relationship with most fans, and anyone could see it was coming for a year...BUT with Rooney I am sure no-one saw it coming, and he is English aswell.

Pretty sure he will end up at City. Another one of their trophy players, although maybe Chelsea?? Plenty of better brothels and escorts down in ldn i'm sure...

If he does indeed end up at City I will just give up all my hope I had in football sad.gif It's such a money game nowadays it actually makes me a bit sick.

Anyway, he's issued a statement saying he does want to leave sob.gif

Well 2012 (I think?) they are bringing in the financial fair play rules which will help the game ALOT. But the fact is the Sheiks do not exist anymore, and football clubs are really not a profit making machine in the short term. It's why i'm so happy NESV took over Liverpool.

The thing is, reading his statement, it is probably alarming. Man Utd have got significantly weaker, and they will continue to do so imo. Van Der Saar is a liability now, and Neville, Scholes, Giggs etc. will be retiring soon. The Glazers don't have the money to re-invest into the squad PROPERLY (save for the odd big signing). Part of me thinks perhaps Rooney is leaving because he knows David Moyes will be the next Man Utd manager when Fergie retires lol.

Why the tears? He's now a regular Jack the Lad. Over the past few years players have been interested in money. A culture that won't change soon.
