Biography

Armed with a mesmerizing, nimble soprano—and a vocal register often likened to Mariah Carey’s and Christina Aguilera’s—Ariana Grande began her career as a child star on Broadway and Nickelodeon before transforming into a pop and R&B powerhouse. Instantly recognizable thanks to her signature ponytail, cat ears, babydoll dresses, and breezy self-confidence, her slyly sexual personal brand has, like that of the Spice Girls before her, become an iconic image of young female power. But Grande is more than a symbol: Over the course of several albums and scores of hit singles—beginning with 2013’s “The Way” (featuring Mac Miler) through The Weeknd-assisted “Love Me Harder” and “Break Free” (featuring Zedd)—she has consistently outshined her male collaborators and deftly parlayed her stardom into activism. An LGBTQ advocate and outspoken feminist (“I’m tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY,” she tweeted in 2016), she uses her platform to confront issues like misogyny, sexism, homophobia, and bullying, spreading a message of love over all. Nowhere was this more clear than in May 2017: After terrorists attacked her concert in Manchester, England, killing 22 and injuring hundreds, Grande continued her tour. "Perspective changes your life,” she told Beats 1’s Ebro Darden. "You want to stay in the moment and try not to give into fear, because obviously the whole point of finishing the tour was being there for my fans. You want to set the same example and keep going.” And that she did: Her Max Martin-produced smash “No Tears Left to Cry,” an escapist dance-floor triumph released a year after the attack, sends a message of hope and healing, with a dose of hear-me-roar attitude. - Apple Music

Great showing for Kacey's album! It's a really lovely listen, perfect for the springtime. Fair play to JT for keeping top 5, I thought it'd be lower after its Monday midweek position. Obviously not particularly great in the grand scheme of things for him though.

Billie Eilish
What Was I Made For?

Soundtrack single from Barbie
Released: 13th July 2023
Label: Darkroom / Interscope Records

On “What Was I Made For?”, her contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, Billie Eilish contemplates life in plastic. “Taking a drive/I was an ideal/Looked so alive/Turns out I'm not real/Just something you paid for/What was I made for?” she reflects, channeling the titular doll as she moves between worlds. If you’ve seen the trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed film, you’ll know that it’s more than just a breezy ride in a hot-pink Corvette—it's an irreverent take on a complicated pop-cultural icon, and Eilish matches that depth with a poignant ballad. “I don't know how to feel, but I wanna try,” she sings. “I don't know how to feel, but someday I might.” - Apple Music

Biography

When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series. “You can say the truth, and you can not tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—Finneas O’Connell at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, followed by an ever-evolving series of singles—a prime example of the fact that, in the streaming era, artists are now free to move directly from their bedrooms into the spotlight. Despite the attention, Eilish is doing her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, expanding her range of collaborators (Vince Staples, Khalid) and dodging easy definition. “If people think I have a sound, if people are like, ‘Oh yeah, her sound is this,’ if someone asks you what my sound is and you have an answer for them—you’re wrong,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “Instead of trying to find a sound, when I want to make something and when I have an idea of what I want to make, I’m just going to make that.” - Apple Music

Biography

Mark Freuder Knopfler OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits from 1977 to 1988, and from 1990 to 1995. He pursued a solo career after the band dissolved, and is now an independent artist. Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle. After graduating from the University of Leeds and working for three years as a college lecturer, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. The band recorded six albums, including Brothers in Arms (1985), one of the best-selling albums in history. After they disbanded in 1995, Knopfler began a solo career, and has produced nine solo albums. He has composed and produced film scores for nine films, including Local Hero (1983), Cal (1984), The Princess Bride (1987), Wag the Dog (1997) and Altamira (2016). He has produced albums for Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman. Described by Classic Rock as a virtuoso, Knopfler is a fingerstyle guitarist and was ranked 27th on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". With Dire Straits, Knopfler sold between 100 million—120 million records. A four-time Grammy Award winner, Knopfler is the recipient of the Edison Award, the Steiger Award and the Ivor Novello Award, as well as holding three honorary doctorate degrees in music from universities in the United Kingdom. Knopfler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018. - Wikipedia

Biography

Kygo turned the dance-music world on its ear in the simplest way possible: by slowing down. The Norwegian producer (born Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll in 1991) cut his teeth crafting bootleg remixes of songs like Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die” and James Blake’s “The Wilhelm Scream,” fleshing out the originals with contrasting touches: EDM drops inspired by his fondness for Avicii and ruminative melodies reflective of his childhood piano studies. In 2013, layering an a cappella of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” over dancing marimbas and a teasingly measured 4/4 beat, he hit upon his slow-motion signature. The following year, he was called up to replace an ailing Avicii on Tomorrowland’s main stage, and his relaxed, sunny vibe stopped EDM’s harder-faster-louder ethos in its tracks. Kygo’s dreamy, pioneering tropical house—encapsulated in singles like the lilting “Firestone” and his even-more-weightless remix of a-ha’s “Take On Me”—cast its influence across the pop music landscape, reaching as far as Skrillex, Diplo, and Justin Bieber’s smash, “Where Are Ü Now,” and securing Kygo collabs with Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Miguel, and Imagine Dragons. - Apple Music

Biography

No one straddles the middle ground between R&B and rap quite like Bryson Tiller. The singer and MC, born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1993, is a self-made superstar, having built his fanbase organically online before inking a deal for his 2015 debut LP, T R A P S O U L. That title spells out Tiller’s artistic vision, and on the big hit from that album, “Don’t,” he lands somewhere between Lil Wayne and Omarion, his two biggest inspirations. While he’s indebted to the artists he grew up listening to, Tiller has carved his own niche unoccupied by anyone else in rap or R&B. Tiller’s voice is classically beautiful, but he stands out, thanks to the way he’s able to mutate it depending on the style of music he’s creating. Tiller rocketed to superstardom with his star-turning performance on DJ Khaled’s 2017 smash “Wild Thoughts,” which also features Rihanna. In Summer Walker’s 2019 song “Playing Games (Extended Version),” Tiller fluidly moves from singing to rapping, blurring the line between the two. Tiller is a reclusive artist, hesitant to reveal much of his personal life unless doing so through music. This only adds to his mystique and continues to set him apart at a time when oversharing is so prevalent on social media. In his life and his career, Bryson Tiller plays by his own rules. - Apple Music

Biography

Dasha is happy to align herself with legions of country artists before her time when she describes her music as “three chords and the truth.” As traditional as the Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s approach may be, however, she also understands the cultural impact of a viral moment. All it took was a line dance to set her on a path toward stardom. “Austin,” the first single from Dasha’s second album, “What Happens Now?,” is a delightfully catchy ode to a lover who just won’t commit. It’s also proven to be social media gold, catapulting to the top of Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart thanks to a plethora of line-dancing reinterpretations. Though Dasha says “Austin” was always her album’s “north star,” it was recorded after she and co-writers Cheyenne Rose Arnspiger, Kenneth Travis Heidelman and Adam Wendler scrapped a different track, “Play Dumb,” which just didn’t fit her vibe. - HuffPost

Biography

Talk about an unexpected career trajectory. In 2007, 23-year-old Calvin Harris released I Created Disco, a cheeky shot across dance music’s bow that presented him as Scotland’s brow-arched answer to LCD Soundsystem. Fast-forward a few years, and the scruffy fellow playing house-party host in the “Merrymaking at My Place” video is suddenly baring oil-slicked abs on Emporio Armani billboards. What happened, of course, is that Harris (born Adam Richard Wiles in 1984) traded up from the Amiga computer of his teens, developed some of the best studio chops in the business with deep-house rollers like 2013's “Thinking About You”, and helped spark EDM’s pop crossover with hits for Rihanna, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding and others. Along the way, he became one of the 2010s’ first DJ/producer/songwriter polymaths to earn top billing even on the songs in which he didn’t sing. No stranger to pyro-lit main stages—his percussive, synth-strafed 2014 single “C.U.B.A.” is big-room house at its most gargantuan—Harris has resisted getting boxed into any one sound. On 2017’s Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, he lays down a set of slinky R&B jams for Frank Ocean, Migos and Young Thug, while the 2018 singles “Promises”, with Sam Smith, and “One Kiss”, with Dua Lipa, proved just how versatile his vision of pop can be. - Apple Music

Biography

The self-designated old soul of Grammy-nominated K-pop group BTS, V is known for his smooth voice, love of jazz, and captivating stage presence. Born 김태형 (Kim Tae-hyung) in Daegu in 1995, the musician grew up with his grandparents in the Korean countryside before moving to Seoul as a teenager to become a K-pop trainee under Big Hit Entertainment. In 2013, he would debut in 방탄소년단 (or Bangtan Sonyeondan), aka BTS, alongside RM, JIN, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, and Jung Kook. Conceived as a hip-hop idol group, BTS evolved to incorporate a wide variety of genres, becoming one of the most successful musical artists of all time. In 2016, their second studio album, Wings, with its lead single “Blood Sweat & Tears,” became their first album to sell one million copies in Korea. V’s solo song on the album, the neo-soul track “Stigma,” explored feelings of loneliness and guilt in line with V’s character within the Bangtan Universe storyline. Other notable solo songs V released under the BTS umbrella include 2018’s “Singularity” and 2020’s “Inner Child,” both of which highlight the richness of the singer’s husky baritone. In 2023, during a BTS group hiatus undertaken so that all members could perform mandatory military service, V made his solo album debut with Layover. The six-track mini-album eschews traditional K-pop sounds for a smoother signature, influenced by vintage jazz and R&B. The album explores questions of regret, love lost, and longing, immersing listeners in a languid world of lo-fi heartache that only V could create. - Apple Music
