11. Kali Uchis - telepatía
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,702,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 11 Chart run: 11 - 10 - 4 - 1 - 2 - 5 - 7 - 19 - 35 - 37 - 32 - X telepatía became a hit this year thanks to TikTok, but frustratingly stalled at that infamous #41. For me, not quite the case: it hit #1 and spent a decent length of time in the top ten. The song switches between English and Spanish and describes a long-distance relationship over a dreamy synth beat. Kali Uchis's chart history: 2021 01 telepatía 2021 25 fue mejor (ft. SZA) Kali Uchis's EOY history: 2021 11 telepatía |

10. Wolf Alice - The Last Man on Earth
Chart peak: 09 Sales: 1,725,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 12 Chart run: 14 - 25 - 21 - 9 - 15 - 22 - 23 - 19 - 31 - 39 - 34 - 38 - X The Last Man on Earth may have only scraped the top ten, but it had huge longevity, lasting 12 weeks on my chart (a lot by my standards). It’s a beautiful song which I was initially disappointed by, expecting something more like Don’t Delete The Kisses or Bros. But it grew on me pretty quickly, and is one of my all-time favourite Wolf Alice songs now. Wolf Alice's chart history: 2021 09 The Last Man on Earth 2021 02 Smile 2021 16 No Hard Feelings 2021 09 How Can I Make It OK? 2021 17 The Beach II 2021 25 Delicious Things 2021 26 Play The Greatest Hits 2021 32 Lipstick On The Glass 2021 34 Feeling Myself 2021 37 Safe From Heartbreak (if you never fall in love) 2021 39 The Beach Wolf Alice's EOY history: 2021 10 The Last Man On Earth 2021 28 Smile |

9. Charli XCX - Good Ones
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,357,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 18 Chart run: 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 10 - 15 - 22 - 24 - 24 - 26 - 27 - 34 - 33 - 19 - [still charting] Charli’s sell-out era is everything, both visually and sonically. A big synthy banger, Charli laments how she ‘always lets the good ones go’. Despite being more mainstream than her releases for some time, it’s still got a brilliantly dark edge to it. Charli XCX's chart history: 2020 09 I’m A Dream (with BC Unidos) 2020 27 Backseat (ft. Carly Rae Jepsen) 2020 28 February 2017 (ft. Clairo & Yaeji) 2020 15 Focus 2020 26 Gone (ft. Good Ones
I hadn't really heard much of Charli's new stuff over the past few years but that one managed to win me over on first listen. As you said, although it is more mainstream it does have a little extra edge to it that makes it so special. I've been going back through what I've missed and now I'm so hyped for the album in March. |

8. MUNA ft. Phoebe Bridgers - Silk Chiffon
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,242,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 17 Chart run: 5 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 11 - 14 - 16 - 21 - 25 - 33 - 32 - 18 - [still charting] Silk Chiffon is simply joy in its purest form, which is not exactly on-brand for Phoebe Bridgers! MUNA are no strangers to optimism (I Know A Place and Number One Fan come to mind) and this song is a big celebration of love in whatever form. MUNA's chart history: 2020 16 Motivation 2020 35 If U Love Me Now 2020 15 Stayaway 2020 10 Bodies (with The Knocks) 2020 14 Pipes of Peace 2020 31 With Myself (with Winona Oak) 2021 01 Silk Chiffon (ft. 7. Måneskin - Torna a casa
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,495,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 17 Chart run: 15 - 6 - 5 - 7 - 8 - 7 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 6 - 16 - 21 - 26 - 36 - 37 - 38 - 39 - X Torna a casa might be less intense than their winning ESC song, but it’s easy to see why Måneskin scored such a big hit with this in their native Italy. It’s a more classic rock song in a sense, with a chorus (“quindi Marlena torna a casa…”) that could easily fill a stadium on tour. It’s a shame their Italian-language material isn’t breaking through, because this is an absolute discography highlight. Måneskin's chart history: 2021 01 ZITTI E BUONI 2021 02 I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE 2021 09 CORALINE 2021 01 Torna a casa 2021 04 MAMMAMIA Måneskin's EOY history: 2021 07 Torna a casa 2021 22 ZITTI E BUONI 2021 79 CORALINE 2021 81 I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE |

6. Tinashe ft. Buddy - Pasadena
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,518,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 15 Chart run: 5 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 5 - 4 - 7 - 12 - 18 - 22 - 29 - 38 - 39 - 40 - X Pasadena is an uptempo bop that celebrates living life. It was rumoured to sample Outkast’s Hey Ya, and I’m not entirely sure if it does or not, but there’s something similar in the production for sure, if not the most distinctive parts. It’s a great feel-good tune that absolutely smashed this year. Tinashe's chart history: 2020 24 Play Fight (with THEY.) 2020 18 Dance Like Nobody's Watching (with Iggy Azalea) 2020 05 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 2020 31 take your time (with Channel Tres) 2021 10 I'm Every Woman (ft. 5. VanJess ft. Phony Ppl - Caught Up
Chart peak: 03 Sales: 1,886,000 (3x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 14 Chart run: 23 - 17 - 3 - 5 - 3 - 5 - 9 - 12 - 22 - 29 - 40 - 38 - 33 - 37 - X Caught Up was VanJess’s follow-up to megahit Recap, and it didn’t do too badly itself, making the EOY top 5! The song has disco influences and silky-smooth vocals from duo VanJess, as well as a verse from Phony Ppl. It might not be the most in-your-face banger of a song, but it’s still incredibly danceable. VanJess's chart history: 2020 14 Already On It (with Jae Stephens) 2021 01 Recap (with Kito & Channel Tres) 2021 03 Caught Up (ft. Phony Ppl) 2021 09 Stickin' (with Sinead Harnett & Masego) 2021 07 Say Yes (with TOKiMONSTA) 2021 08 Slow Down (ft. 4. SZA - Good Days
Chart peak: 02 Sales: 1,886,000 (3x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 14 Chart run: 13 - 2 - 4 - 8 - 2 - 11 - 14 - 16 - 18 - 16 - 20 - 33 - 37 - 39 - X Good Days is a perfect slice of SZA’s R&B brilliance. The light, ethereal production contributes to a really dreamy, melodic feel. Released on Christmas Day 2020, it was a perfect gift during the first few slow weeks of the year, and hasn’t got old yet. SZA's chart history: 2020 25 Hit Different (ft. Ty Dolla $ign) 2021 02 Good Days 2021 07 Kiss Me More (with Doja Cat) 2021 25 fue mejor (with Kali Uchis) 2021 02 I Hate U SZA's EOY history: 2021 04 Good Days |

3. Dua Lipa - That Kind of Woman
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 1,932,000 in 2021 [1,978,000 total (3x Platinum)] Weeks on chart: 15 Chart run: 27 - RE - 1 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 4 - 7 - 10 - 17 - 22 - 21 - 27 - 28 - 29 - X That Kind Of Woman is the sort of smash most people could only wish for. Musically, it’s a midtempo tune where Dua sings about wanting someone without hesitation. It spent a single week on the chart last year courtesy of its Club Future Nostalgia remix, but re-entered in its original form at the start of this year. Its gentle 8-week descent through the top ten was at the time a record for the most weeks spent there, and in total it spent 15 weeks proving itself as a chart force. Dua Lipa's chart history: 2020 01 Physical (solo or with Gwen Stefani & Mark Ronson) 2020 07 SUGAR (with BROCKHAMPTON) 2020 01 Break My Heart 2020 02 Cool 2020 03 Hallucinate 2020 04 Levitating (solo / with Madonna, Missy Elliott & The Blessed Madonna / with DaBaby) 2020 05 Love Again 2020 06 Boys Will Be Boys 2020 07 Don’t Start Now 2020 08 Future Nostalgia 2020 09 Good In Bed 2020 11 Pretty Please 2020 11 UN DIA (ONE DAY) (with J Balvin, Bad Bunny & Tainy) 2020 01 Love Is Religion 2020 01 That Kind Of Woman 2020 02 Fever (ft. 2. Kito ft. VanJess & Channel Tres - Recap
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 2,139,000 (3x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 15 Chart run: 40 - 18 - 5 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 6 - 8 - 12 - 25 - 26 - 33 - 30 - 33 - X Recap looked certain to be the year-end #1… until a certain other song came along. It climbed the charts steadily and solidified its place at the top week-after-week, earning 15 weeks in the top 40. It’s easily the biggest hit for all three artists involved, although both featured artists have gone on to have other big smashes which have already featured here. Kito's chart history: 2021 01 Recap (ft. VanJess & Channel Tres) VanJess's chart history: 2020 14 Already On It (with Jae Stephens) 2021 01 Recap (with Kito & Channel Tres) 2021 03 Caught Up (ft. 1. Clairo - Amoeba
Chart peak: 01 Sales: 2,323,000 (3x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 24 Chart run: 11 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 3 - 8 - 10 - 10 - 14 - 17 - 21 - 25 - 24 - 28 - 30 - 39 - 40 - 37 - 37 - 40 - RE - 25 - 31 - [still charting] And so we reach the top! Amoeba doesn’t scream “biggest song of the year”, but it is. It’s an understated, alternative-style song with quiet vocals and typical Jack Antonoff flairs, creating something really intriguing to listen to. Clairo’s album, Sling, is definitely worth a listen if you enjoy this, although this is the most upbeat (if you can call it that) track on it. It’s broken records as the first song to spend four weeks at #1 (now matched by MUNA’s Silk Chiffon) and the most weeks spent on the chart ever (surpassing BC Unidos & Carly Rae Jepsen’s Trouble in the Streets). Clairo's chart history: 2020 28 February 2017 (with Charli XCX & Yaeji) 2020 15 Sofia 2021 01 Amoeba 2021 11 Bambi 2021 22 Blouse 2021 24 Joanie 2021 28 Partridge Clairo's EOY history: 2021 01 Amoeba |

Interesting Måneskin choice in the top ten, it is a really good song. I quite liked That Kind Of Woman too. I must check out your top two, have saved them to my playlist of songs to check out!
Easy and Bruxelles je t'aime are my favourite songs in the top 20, always thought the former is very early 00s sounding. This post has been edited by gooddelta: 7th February 2022, 10:40 PM |
